      Book Description

Barbara Novak has written an introduction to this catalogue that provides a theoretical framework for looking at this collection in the philosophical context of nineteenth-century American culture. The works of Thomas Cole and the luminists are seen in relation to Transcendentalism as embodied in the writings of Emerson and Thoreau; the later realism of Winslow Homer is seen in relation to the influence of Darwin, and throughout, the domineering influence of nature and the unpastoralized American landscape is seen as a major factor in leading artists trained in European traditions to modify accepted solutions in a way that led to the development of a distinct national identity. Barbara Novak's essay is followed by a detailed and extensive catalogue of the 109 paintings by 55 artists, in which all the paintings in the collection are illustrated in color. The notes on each painting incorporate meticulous original research by a group of young American scholars, and in addition provide provenance and exhibition information and an account of citations in previous literature. A number of comparative illustrations are also included. Brief biographies of the artists, again using new material and accompanied by a bibliography, follow the catalogue section.

5 out of 5 stars Photography so personal, you'll want to leave a tip..........1999-03-10

Williams' book plunges you head-first into an era when people truly did make money "the old-fashioned way" ( they earned it with their sweat and tears). We sit as interlopers as we watch the toil of daily lives unfurl across the beautifully photographed pages. We sit at the counter while the waitress who has been at this particular diner way past her prime, exchanges small talk with the patrons. We can almost feel the cold rain against our faces as we view the water-drenched images of The Cheyenne (NYC) and The Highland Park(NY). We sense the simultaneous joy and frustration on the faces of diner owners who can't be sure what the future holds for their life's work. William's has taken us into a doorway that we rarely have a chance to enter; he has given us a license to the past. Through this book we have the opportunity to rekindle the memories of our childhood, teenage years and young adulthood...all at the same time. We remember what it felt like to sit at the counter with our Dads. We remember the hard formica tables against our ribs as we shared a ketchup-drenched kiss across the table. We remember introducing our "little ones" to the wall boxes of music that sit on the tables and watch in wonderment as they try to figure out "where the music comes from".

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful and Revealing Look at Hometown Diners.......1999-02-26

Robert Willaims captures the essence of our hometown diners in a beautiful and touching way. The photographs are beautiful and a perfect example of excellent photography. I would highly recommend this book to all readers, especially those who remember the nostaglia of going to your hometown diner. Don't miss this one!

            Book Description

The American diner was traditionally a miniature restaurant, originally a mobile one, providing solid, inexpensive food for the working man at virtually all hours of the day and night. From its humble origins in 1872, the diner reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s and was particularly popular during the sad years of the Depression. In recent years, modest diners have been dying out, victims of the pervasive fast-food chains. Gerd Kittel, the distinguished German photographer, has scoured the American city and countryside for outstanding relics, and shows us not only a selection of architectural surprises and delights but also the interiors of these nostalgic eateries and the individuals who have become their faithful denizens. For this updated edition, Kittel returns to America and the diner, adding a selection of new photos to the collection.

            5 out of 5 stars A Different Perspective.......2001-10-27

I've owned Mr. Kittel's book for quite some time. I bought it not for the subject matter, but for his photography. As an amateur for 30 years I know how hard it is to produce some of the photography shown in this book.

I notice the prior reviewer criticizes the book for not providing more history, etc. on diners. If the book were misleading in its description or presentation I would agree. However, it makes no such pretenses. This is a photographic book, plain and simple. Actually, those interested in diner history should look into the work of Richard Gutman on diners, which is comprehensive and an excellent companion to this volume.

It has been with this book that I've felt more closeness to the atmosphere of diners, because his photos provide not only a sense of spontaneity in the people, but also his use of lighting. I particularly enjoy those photos where he has made no correction for fluoroscent lighting with his daylight film. This lends a greenish cast to those photos, again enhancing the feel of spontaneity.

As stated above, this is an excellent photographic study of the American diner phenomenon. Those looking for historical narrative can find that easily elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars a decent book about diners.......2000-06-16

the photos in this book were very good, although i would have preferred a bit more history. i recommend it though, to someone who is casually interested in diners and the people who love them.

              Book Description

When a blind boxer and an old man visit the estate of Pifitos, little does Pifitos realize that they will send him on a journey to become the new hero of Greece. Facing drunken centaurs, music-loving monsters, and puzzling counsel from Dionysus himself, Pifitos and the lovely Amitis sail to a nameless island to face Hecate and the gates of Hades. Can Pifitos survive an unexpected turn of events to become the Greatest of all Heroes? Find out in the English-language debut of the staggeringly gifted Ukrainian artist, Igor Baranko. The story of Pifitos is both a tale told in epic style - purporting to be an “unknown lost poem of Homer” - and a rollicking send-up of Greek mythology in all its bawdy glory.

                Book Description

The First Eighty Years is a first person account of a Nisei (American citizen born to immigrant Japanese parents), who grew up on the farms of Fresno County (California) during the Great Depression, experienced incarceration in internment camps during World War II, joined the army, then worked as a newspaperman in Marin County for 33 years until retirement.

For some, his remembrances of the work and life on a small farm before WWII will bring recollections of a very different period; for others, it will be a learning experience, a social history lesson, about a life they have never known. His description of life in the army after WWII is a story seldom told.

As a journalist, Mr. Takeshita's newspaper writings were followed not only because of the subjects, but for the direct, descriptive style his readers grew to count on and look forward to enjoying daily. It is his style that keeps his tale moving forward with subtle warmth and charm. Included also, are some of the famous and infamous issues he covered "on the job."

5 out of 5 stars Timeless values in overcoming difficulties. A wounderful family book!.......2006-04-26

Ralph Moody's books are a national treasure demonstrating life at the end of an era while teaching timeless values in an enjoyable and appealing fashion. Almost all of Ralph Moody's books have that "read aloud" feel so rare in literature disigned for families. Told in the first person he tells his story simply with feeling and often some well placed humor.

In this volume Ralph is drawn into the Cattle/livestock business and unwittingly forms a partnership that leaves him unbelievably in debt. Ever resourceful Ralph rebuilds a new business and works to overcome his turn of bad luck.

This is a wounderful story whose enjoyment will be enhanced by reading the other books in the series first as this in the last book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Ralph Moody.......2001-04-27

When I was a child I read Little Britches, Man of The Family, and Horse of a Different Color. These books/stories are timeless. Any parent who wants to give a good example to a child about resposibility should obtain these.

5 out of 5 stars Vivid history in a home-spun style that leaves you smiling........2000-01-10

Ralph Moody again weaves an artful picture of true life in the real world of the early twentieth century. His easy going style and colorful portrayal of each character give a real livng account of day to day life with a constant optimism that many of us miss in our cynical world. A great read aloud family book aong with the rest in the series. Moody gives character qualities that are rarely found in the novels of today and are much needed especially for todays young men.

Put this one on your 10 - 14 year old's reading list but don't forget to read it along with them.

                          Book Description

Wellfleet is among the most picturesque villages on Cape Cod. Its rich history weaves a tale of sailors and boatbuilders, travelers and artists, and even ghosts and pirates. Here, in the pages of Wellfleet, trace the story of this fascinating village, from the old Congregational church steeple, which still tolls the hours according to shipsÂ' bells, to Billingsgate, the lost island whose lighthouse and village were swallowed by the sea. WellfleetÂ's history is undeniably tied to the sea. Of the many shipwrecks off WellfleetÂ's shores, the most famous is the wreck of the Whydah—the pirate ship captained by “Black Sam” Bellamy. It sank in a storm in 1717, and artifacts from the ship now form a museum. Ruins of MarconiÂ's wireless station, where the first transatlantic communication was made, are still visible on the dunes of Marconi Beach. The fishing boats still leave the harbor every morning as their predecessors did, and the remains of the old wharves, the shipbuildersÂ' shops, the customs house, and the lighthouse can still be seen today in a town transformed into a thriving artistsÂ' community.

This book relates to people that remember small town life. Families all worked together and helped their neighbors. Each citizen was important! Nothing has really changed in this seaside town, even the names are the same.

                          Book Description

The intelligence community's flawed assessment of Iraq's weapons systems -- and the Bush administration's decision to go to war in part based on those assessments -- illustrates the political and policy challenges of combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. In this comprehensive assessment, defense policy specialists Jason Ellis and Geoffrey Kiefer find disturbing trends in both the collection and analysis of intelligence and in its use in the development and implementation of security policy.

Analyzing a broad range of recent case studies -- Pakistan's development of nuclear weapons, North Korea's defiance of U.N. watchdogs, Russia's transfer of nuclear and missile technology to Iran and China's to Pakistan, the Soviet biological warfare program, weapons inspections in Iraq, and others -- the authors find that intelligence collection and analysis relating to WMD proliferation are becoming more difficult, that policy toward rogue states and regional allies requires difficult tradeoffs, and that using military action to fight nuclear proliferation presents intractable operational challenges.

Ellis and Kiefer reveal that decisions to use -- or overlook -- intelligence are often made for starkly political reasons. They document the Bush administration's policy shift from nonproliferation, which emphasizes diplomatic tools such as sanctions and demarches, to counterproliferation, which at times employs interventionist and preemptive actions. They conclude with cogent recommendations for intelligence services and policy makers.

Many social and political challenges are involved in combating proliferation of weapons, from analyzing intelligence data for accuracy to understanding how technology transfers and how security policies are directed and implemented. COMBATING PROLIFERATION: STRATEGIC INTELLIGENCE & SECURITY POLICY comes from two specialists who analyze trends in the collection and applications of intelligence data, providing hard-hitting chapters questioning the accuracy of both data and methods used to compile and scrutinize it. Both college-level military and political science holdings will find this a key addition promoting understanding, debate, and classroom discussions.

                              Book Description

Waves of new research findings, the dynamic emergence of new technologies, and growing perception of the risks entailed have drastically altered the way people in industrialized societies relate to technical development. The population at large, at least in the western world, has increasingly lost trust in institutions and scientific authority.
There must be some way to restore people's faith in scientific authority. Between Understanding and Trust identifies and analyses the public understanding of science and technology, thus making an important contribution to achieving a new "trust."
