An awesome book. Let's just say that our tour guide in Greece use this book as a reference. As an educator I found this book to be extrememly useful. How many of us actually knew that all these marble ruins were fully painted in their prime? The overlays and information are wonderful. Highly recommended.

Vivid and HIstorical.......2000-10-01

I first saw this book while on vacation in Greece...Naturally, I looked up the places my husband and I had visited and the book portrays them beautifully! There's great historical detail in the text as well as outstandingly accurate illustrations of prominent Greek sites and monuments. The 'see-through' pages give an incredible glimpse of what ancient Greece looked like over 2000 years ago. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who has been to Greece, wants to go to Greece or is studying Greece. It is written for all ages! For any educator teaching Greek history this would be a highly useful 'textbook'.Enjoy!

Greek buildings then and now.......2000-07-15

This beautiful book has full page color photos of the ruins of ancient Greek temples and theaters, with transparent overlays filling in how these magnificent buildings would have looked when first built. It includes photos of statues and architectural details, with a general overview of ancient Greek history and explanations of the buildings' purposes and histories. Most of the buildings shown are on mainland Greece, but the Palace at Knossos and the sanctuary of Apollo on Delos are also included. These buildings are spectacular!

Beautiful. .......2007-09-29

I started collected Icart sketches a few years ago. This book is FABULOUS. It breaks down his work by periods. The pages are full of his sketches / year created / little tid bits regarding them. The reproduced works are full color (though I love love love the black and white sketches) and just beautiful. At the end of the book is a short glimpse of other artists whose work was during the same time, making comparison easy.

If you like Icart -- this book is a HAVE TO HAVE!

The book gets bigger and better with each new edition. The latest revision just came out in July, 2002. There are about 600 pictures and all are in color. It is by far the most complete book on Louis Icart.

Louis Icart, the complete Etchings........2000-04-09

Anyone remotely interested in the work of French artist and illustrator Louis Icart, will be impressed by the comprehensive presentation of his etchings. The colour printing is excellent, and in chronological order one can see the development of his career, his charming females in various fashion garments of the period, and also nude, curiously rival the work of Australian artist Norman Lindsay, although Linday's nudes are of the buxom variety, and perhaps more agressive than sleek French models whom Icart make so decorative. Icart is firmly in the tradition of great French Art, after painters like Boucher and Watteau. My only small regret there was not more text about Icart, but this is a book of pictures and as such a recommended reference work.

In 1962, at the age of twenty-six, Trisha Brown became one of the original members of the experimental Judson Church Dance Theater in New York, and in 1970 she cofounded The Grand Union. The dancers of these radical groups, such as Yvonne Rainer and Steve Paxton, embraced improvisation and the use of everyday movements not usually associated with legitimate choreography. To bring her dance into the real world of objects and unpredictable events, Brown performed much of her early work outdoors. The book recalls the richness of those times, when poets, musicians, painters, and sculptors joined with dancers and choreographers in questioning the hierarchies and boundaries of their disciplines.

By the late 1970s, Brown was looking for ways to expand and open up her dances. The desire to create large-scale, complex productions led her to incorporate stage design and music as simultaneous, independent elements in her work. Collaborating with such visual artists and musicians as Laurie Anderson, Robert Ashley, John Cage, Alvin Curran, Nancy Graves, Donald Judd, Fujiko Nakaya, Robert Rauschenberg, and, most recently, Terry Winters, she created visual and musical spectacles, or "movement-images."

In this book, which accompanies a nationally touring exhibition co-organized by the Addison Gallery of American Art and the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College, historians, critics, choreographers, dancers, and visual artists explore the dialogue between dance and the visual arts in Brown?s work. I love Rall's biting humor and he helped me out of a hard time, by e-mailing me the text to "My War with Brian" when I was having trouble with people at school. I love his monthly MRR Column and his cartoons show us what is really going on without watering it down so its "nice". Keep up the good work!

The worst thing that people have done, turns out to be animal abuse and treating people badly. I don't think that all of the stories were that funny. It's an easy read and you realise what people are capable of doing!

This is one of the funniest comics I've read in a long time, and anyone with a truly dark sense of humor will enjoy it. The best story deals with some teenagers locking a kid in a maulseum--over night! I am eagerly awaiting the sequel.

I first saw Ted Rall's work in "Might" magazine. I thought it was great social commentary with an edge. If your tired of being spoon fed your daily dose of reality by Dan Rather, check him out. He exposes the absurdities of everyday life and the ugliness of human behavior. Its black humor with a liberal bent. Not everyone's cup of tea but wickedly funny!

I was floored by this book. It is diary of a group of men traveling to the yukon in search of gold. I was amazed at the things that they went through. In our relatively easy modren life, It is good to read about what extremes people would go through in the old days. To say that they had a rough journey would be an understatement. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get a feel for what it must have been like to ber part of the gold rush in the Yukon territory.

How to be Married and Happy.......2002-02-23

This extraordinary book is about much more than negotiation. It is really about the nature of marriage. Through her successful family therapy practice and her own personal growth, the author has achieved tremendous insights into the assumptions that Americans bring to marriage, how these assumptions can cause problems for us, and how we can rethink our assumptions in order to make our marriages work, or work better.

Carter shows how the traditional model of marriage has not changed fast enough to successfully support the other ways that society has changed. The traditional model is one breadwinner and one homemaker in a heterosexual first marriage. This is how most of us were raised, and perhaps more importantly, it is the model that society, for the most part, is currently set up to support and value. While many young people today intend to share expenses and responsibilities equally with their partners, when we get married, especially if we have children, we tend to unconsciously fall back into thinking according to the traditional model. There's nothing wrong with both partners choosing a traditional marriage; the problem is that many of us do not make fully conscious choices about marriage. Instead, we unwittingly buy into a model that does not in fact (usually) serve either party well.

What's particularly brilliant about the way that Carter explores these issues is that she shows the reader why it matters and how it can change. The book includes useful stories about real people's marriages, and the emphasis is on what was making these people unhappy, what was keeping them from seeing all of their options, how they learned to consider and embrace new options, and whether and how their marriages changed. Because the stories are selected so well and integrated so nicely with the broader exploration of social issues, the book is easy to read and the relatively complex social issues are made very accessible.

The book does not say that money always equals power, but points out that the two are generally equated in American society. It also points out that without autonomy, people do not generally feel equal -- because they really aren't equal in the sense of having the same options. Autonomy--being able to stand on one's own--is so linked with money, not just emotionally, but in reality, that it is important for us to understand the implications of who makes how much money and how the money is shared.

The book also makes it clear that there are two kinds of power, "power over and power to." The book does not advocate that anyone use power over another person, whether that power is in the form of money, affection, or anything else. It does show us why people sometimes do that, and how to think about and deal with people who come from that perspective. It also shows us how people can learn to use the "power to" make themselves happier. Many women are uncomfortable with any type of power, including the power to be happy and even to protect ourselves. This book helps us understand why it is a bad idea to pretend that there are no power issues or power struggles in a relationship, and why it is a good idea to learn more about these dynamics. But its focus is by no means how to win a power struggle. Rather, it shows us how a better understanding of these dynamics can help us negotiate a win-win marriage.

It also, by the way, describes how to negotiate a win-win divorce, with emphasis on how to best support and nurture children during and after divorce.

The book also emphasizes the importance of looking at the family as a system, and shows how our experiences in our families of origin play a shockingly large role in our relationships with our spouses. It includes very helpful examples of how people have reconnected with their "impossible" parents in order to learn more about themselves and the family themes that have shaped their expectations and assumptions (which are often hidden).

In short, this is a book about how to be happier. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to be happier in a committed relationship.

Thought-provoking.......2001-09-26

I love it when a book makes me stop in my tracks and think, "Wait a minute, that makes sense. Why haven't I ever thought to look at things that way?"

This book incorporates not only the premise that problems arise within a family system but also within the context of cultural assumptions. Our society values earning and power, thus the Golden Rule (She/he who has the gold, rules). Though each marriage partner has individual problems, these problems arise from the patterns of relating we learn from our parents and our families of origin. Until we understand them, we recreate them in our own marriages. This book, along with David Schnarch's book, Passionate Marriage, will really get your brain churning!

Rethink the way you negotiate with your spouse - great!.......1997-11-15

A great book for those who want to make changes in their marriage/relationships. The main issue that she puts forth is that money=power. That equation changes the way that people communicate and negotiate in relationship. Examples abound as well as helpful ways to boost your negotiating power.(the main one being - get and keep a job even if its only part time!) This book could change alot of relationships for the better.

A Tale of Five Frustrating Offensives.......2004-11-04

With Osprey's Campaign #143,Caen 1944, Ken Ford follows-up his two earlier volumes in the series on the British D-Day beachheads. As usual, Ford's narrative is solid and well supported by graphics and data. Ford covers the five frustrating British offensives in June-July 1944 that ultimately captured the vital city of Caen but failed to achieve the desired breakout from the beachheads. However, readers should keep in mind that another recent series - Pen & Sword's Battleground Europe series - has titles that cover the same ground, usually in greater detail. While it is unfair to make a direct comparison between the 96-page Osprey format and the 192-page Pen & Sword Format, readers should be aware that Ford did not incorporate some of the material that makes the P&S volumes on Epsom, Hill 112 and Goodwood more original in content. On the other hand, Ford summarizes five battles (Epsom, Windsor, Charnwood, Jupiter and Goodwood) in 96 pages that P&S did in almost 600 pages, so readers seeking an overview of the campaign would be better advised to stick to the Osprey version.

The introductory sections in Caen 1944 are a bit too superficial, with little effort to provide insightful analysis on the strength and weaknesses of both sides. For example, Ford makes little comment on the limited extent of combined arms training in the British armor units prior to D-Day, but this clearly had an impact upon their early performance in Normandy. On the other hand, the desperate German shortage of decent infantry forced them to commit virtually all their armor to defensive missions, thereby robbing them of the initiative. It is noteworthy that no German army infantry divisions played any major role in the five offensives around Caen, which is a telling indictment of where the German army was going in late 1944 (a handful of powerful, high-quality divisions and a bunch of low-quality, odds-and-ends cannon fodder divisions). Ford's discussion of the operational-level issues hews to the company-line that Montgomery's intent always was to fix the German armor in the east while the Yanks broke out in the west, but ignores the facts that Montgomery failed to weight his main effort toward seizing Caen on D-Day and then dilly-dallied in the immediate 4-5 days after D-Day when the German defense around the city was still incomplete. In fact, the Caen campaign bears a lot of similarities to Montgomery's later Operation Market-Garden in that he planned an operation that required considerable risk and boldness, then executed the plan in a very slow and cautious manner that resulted in high loss and failure. Graphically, this volume is excellent. The author provides four 2-D maps (first Allied moves on Caen; Operation Epsom; Operation Charnwood and the Operation Goodwood plan), three 3-D maps (counterattack by 12th SS Panzer on 7 June; Operation Jupiter and Operation Goodwood). Osprey has improved the 3-D maps by adding 1-kilometer gridlines and moving all the text over to one side in sequence (it was always very frustrating to read the previous format, with events thrown helter-skelter all over the page), but at the cost of removing most of the 3-D effect and the elevation now seems pretty flat. The three battle scenes by Peter Dennis (the Regina Rifles street fighting in Caen; 5th Wiltshires attack on Hill 112; Luftwaffe 88mm guns engaging British armor) are excellent.

Ford's account of the initial British moves on Caen in the period 7-13 June 1944 in the critical week after D-Day are surprisingly brief. While his discussion of the 12th SS Panzer counterattack that stopped the Canadians from taking Carpiquet airfield on 7 June is excellent, he gives few details and no maps to display the 7th Armored Division drive to Villers Bocage or the 51st Highland attack east of the Orne. Indeed, the two weeks after D-Day around Caen rate only a few short pages. Instead, Ford focuses most of his intention on the big set-piece battles to get around Caen, which began with Operation Epsom on 24-30 June. Ford admits Epsom achieved little, but he opines that "it did frustrate German plans to push the Allies back into the sea" but by this point everyone on the German side but Hitler realized that the best that could be hoped for was a stalemate. Ford's description of the next offensive - Operation Windsor to seize Carpiquet airfield - is very interesting; the Canadians committed a very reinforced brigade, complete with battleship support, to seize a small area held by only 150 Germans. Amazingly, the Canadians failed to seize the entire airfield and suffered 4-1 casualties. The next two battles, Jupiter and Charnwood, resulted in capture of part of Caen, but at the cost of over 5,000 casualties.

The climax of the Caen campaign was Operation Goodwood, which was either intended as a breakout or a battle of attrition. Ford's account of Goodwood is marred by inadequate research; for example, he claims that "the Germans had been able to pull their panzers out of the frontline" but in fact the 22nd Panzer Regiment and other 21st Panzer units were on the FEBA. By missing this fact, Ford omits mention that the Allied carpet bombing clobbered quite a few German tanks, including several Tiger tanks. There doesn't seem to be much analysis here why Goodwood failed and the key question of whether the gains justified the losses remains unasked. However, Ford does mention that the Germans lost over 100 tanks on the first day of Goodwood (he may be counting assault guns and SP howitzers, too), which if true, means the Montgomery did succeed in whittling down some of the German armor. Overall, Ford's volume is quite good and one of the better Osprey volumes in awhile, but readers interested in greater detail would be advised to read the recent Pen & Sword volumes as well.
