Architecture, Animal, Human : The Asymmetrical Condition
ASIN: 0300071191 |
Book Description
In this suggestive inquiry into the operations of linearity in architectural theory and practice, Catherine Ingraham investigates the line as both a conceptual and literal force in architecture. She approaches her subject from philosophical, theoretical, practical, and historical points of view, finding the following points of convergence: architecture's relation to property, politics, and economy; architecture's relation to propriety and the need to keep things "in line"; and architecture's relation to the proper name, human identity, object identity, and spatial location and demarcation. In this engaging discussion, Ingraham considers maps, architectural plans, the laws of geometry, systems of architectural knowledge, and mythologies of architectural origin in work by Le Corbusier, Vitruvius, Alberti, Tafuri, Derrida, Lévi-Strauss, Shakespeare, Lacan, Deleuze, Rilke, and Stendhal. Entering the current complex debates about the relation between theory and practice in architecture, the author also addresses themes in psychoanalytic criticism, poststructural theory, and feminist criticism. Her examination thus moves beyond architecture and its literal structures to the notion of epistemological structure that architecture as a discipline and practice upholds and promotes.

The Line of Limits.......2001-10-26
I am a graduate student of architecture:
This is a wonderful and exciting text.
Ingraham, coming from a literary background, enters onto the stage of architecture with an fresh perspective of the production and reproduction of architecture.
Her study pays accute attention to the productive details of architectural drawing, and provides an interesting analysis of such production in political, gender and historical terms.

Astounding Diversity of the Art of Sculpting.......2005-12-20
The Sculpture Reference by Arthur Williams is a phenomenal achievement. An enjoyable and educational book that I find quite inspiring. Living, contemporary, working - sculptors; what an excellent set of criteria for the inclusion of the over 280 artist whose work is displayed in the over 1,100 color images within this hefty 512 page book.
The quality of the photography is excellent in every case. The alphabetical structure of the work lends a nice rhythm between materials, techniques and the results that can be achieved with them, in another words it is a good read for the serious sculptor.
The most impressive aspect is his selection of unique sculpts; the diversity of which is almost unbelievable. This handsome book already has a few scares from knocking around my studio. Almost every person that has opened it has ended up going from page one to the back cover one page at a time. Most of these people not sculptors mind you, just everyday Jane and Joes that are drawn in. I have many instructional videos and books on sculpting and sculpture, but this one book could replace half of them as an effective educational tool.
Book Description
A comprehensive guide for the student sculptor who wants to learn about clay and wax modeling, wood carving, stone carving, ceramics, moist clay products, and mold making, casting, and enlarging. Addresses all aspects of the use and function of sculpting tools and materials used in traditional sculpture. Each chapter concludes with a troubleshooting section which answers questions most frequently asked by the student and those troublesome areas experienced by the sculptor. Also explains how tools are made. Charts on proportional requirements of materials, weights and measures, plus an extensive glossary of terms are provided. A key word technique can be used to easily explore a topic.

Dated...but useful for ideas when in a jam..........2006-08-26
Rather boring lay-out, but it does provide info useful to help when looking for ideas not currently thought of when setting up projects. We use it in a fossil preparation laboratory for general review, but again, there are probably other texts that might fit the bill. Nevertheless I am glad our lab has it...too many young "creators" forget the obvious and this book helps remedy this problem.
Very Helpful.......2005-08-17
As a beginning rock sculptor, I found this book very helpful. I would have liked more information on the "how" the tools are used and more information on which tools were best for which materials, but it really helped me to get started on my rocks. I would recommend this book for anyone getting into rock sculpting.
What? NO PICTURES?.......2004-10-17
This book contains some nice little tidbits of info but it is sorely lacking due to its lack of pictures. The 18 page long list of tool dimensions and weights gives you no real info without pics to show what they're talking about. With only 5 images in the entire book (including the front cover) I feel that 80% of the potential value of the book is missing.
Without pictures, this book is simply an expanded glossary of sculptural terms.
No fluff, just the facts!.......2002-05-14
I took up sculpting several months ago, and I've found my "niche" with polymer clay doll-making. I've dabbled in ceramic and terra-cotta medium, but I'm also willing to try different methods of creations in the 3D World. I bought this book to give me some insight into different techniques, and that's just what it contains. Unlike so many books that try to be everything to everyone, this book gets down to the facts quickly, giving the reader a good idea of what a venture into a new sculpting medium will mean in terms of equipment and expertise. There are plenty of books that will walk a reader through every little step to create a clone of what the writer or artist has created. This book guides the reader towards the tools and different methods, without incringing on the reader's own creativity. I hope to find other books like this one on subjects like painting and photography, although sculpting is quickly becoming a passion and consuming most of my "art time". Bravo to the writer(s) and publishers of this book, and thank you!!

A Good Simple Guide from a Great Photographer.......2002-03-24
This book was published in 1978 and is a pleasure. Eisenstaedt used Leica rangefinders and Nikon SLRs. The book contains many pictures and Eisenstaedt explains how he made each one. His favorite combination was the Leica M and a 35 mm lens. He used a tripod as needed. Eisenstaedt cautions to "keep it
simple." "The most important thing about a camera is that you feel comfortable with it," he says. Good down to earth advise throughout the book. Photography is not about equipment and technique; those are givens. It is about vision.
One of 2 masters.......2001-09-26
For the basics and for the best news photog.
Eisenstaedt's Guide to Photography is one of the best books.

Excellent.......1999-01-08
This is an extremely well-written book on a sadly neglected figure in American culture. The most popular newspaper columnist of his time, Adams made "Tinker to Evers to Chance" a national catchphrase and was mentor to George S. Kaufman, James Thurber and other distinguished humorists. I thought the research was particularly thorough--especially regarding the ancestry of Adams' second wife. And someone must have done a lot of work in musty libraries looking up all F.P.A.'s articles for now-forgotten magazines! I hope he got paid well. I would also single out the index for special praise.

Transfer Pricing Methods: An Applications Guide
ASIN: 0802007767 |
Book Description
Governments face complex problems in taxing crossborder, intrafirm transactions of multinational enterprises. Such transactions dominate world trade flows and critically affect national tax revenues. However, their values - transfer prices - are set typically inside the multinationals. As a result, governments have established complicated rules based on the arm's length standard to discourage transfer price manipulation.
This book draws on the fields of international business, economics, accounting, law, and public policy as they pertain to transfer pricing. It includes a state-of-the-art review of the economic theory of transfer pricing; an international business approach to multinationals and intrafirm trade in North America; complete outlines of the corporate income tax laws and regulations in Canada, the United States, and Mexico as they apply to transfer pricing; a thorough discussion of the roles of the U.S. Treasury and the OECD in developing the arm's length standard; summaries of key transfer pricing court cases; samples of accounting practices and problems; and a critical look at the current tax issues and public policy proposals in regard to taxing multinationals in the twenty-first century.
Taxing Multinationals should be of interest to practitioners, researchers, and policy makers who deal with multinational enterprises, international taxation, and intrafirm transactions.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to Transferprice Literature.......2002-04-05
Perhaps the best (introduction) book on transferprices and multinationals I've ever read. Eden provides a good introduction in the economic theory of multinationals founded on the theory of the firm. Afterwards, she presents the microeconomic basis of the effects of taxation on the production process within the MNE. Propositions for a future taxation system in the EU are made, also the unitary concept is evaluated.

Health o Meter HDC100-01 "Grow with Me" Teddy Bear Scale for Babies and Toddlers
ASIN: 1882349423 |
Book Description
This best-selling book is by an author who lived through the 1994 Northridge earthquake that did more than 20 billion dollars worth of damage! It uses simple instructions and easy-to-follow diagrams to show how to protect both your family and your valued possessionseverything from hanging pictures and artwork to your computer, television, and refrigerator. The appendix lists manufacturers of specially designed earthquake-resistant products complete with manufacturers addresses, telephone, and fax numbers.
Customer Reviews:
too simple.......2001-05-11
A very basic book with little real substance--a thin book with few pages with simplistic drawings and no content. Explains all the obvious information about securing furniture and knick knacks, plus the usual safety boiler plate information that should be obvious to anyone with common sense. The information on structural aspects for the home are laughable and sometimes incorrect. I think I learned more in third grade about earthquakes than this book has to offer. There are many far better books on the subject. I'm sending this guy back. Yuck.
Earthquake prepared.......2000-09-28
This is an extremely helpful and important book for all those (like me) who live on a fault zone. The book begins by explaining how earthquakes are measured. In the second part it shows how to secure your home, the materials you will need, like special screws for every item, bolts, latches, window film and so forth. It also explains what you need to know about the walls and the structure of the house. The author shows how to secure every single furniture in the house, from bookcases and their contents to crystal, ceramics, pictures and hanging artwork, to cabinet doors; how to attach computers, televisions, microwaves etc. Further on, it shows you how to prevent structural damage to your home and gives the cost as well. How to prepare the emergency supplies and gives family safety plans (special instructions for children). How should you be prepared if you are living in a mobile home or apartment, preparedness for the disabled, everything, in every detail is listed in this practical book, and it also gives information about earthquake insurance. The second part of the book shows you what you should do during an earthquake, if you are indoors, outdoors, in a high-rise building etc. What you should do when the shaking stops, from wearing heavy-duty shoes and long-sleeved clothes, to checking the house for damages. Whoever lives on a fault zone MUST buy this book now! and follow the instructions (which are easy to do) because unlike tornadoes and floods, you never know when an earthquake might strike nor the magnitude and the damage it will cause. I got this book after an earthquake we had measuring 7.4R killing over 30,000 people, and I am glad I did. Now I feel more secure; it is better to be prepared than do nothing, thinking whatever will be will be.

Invaluable Personl Information On Soldiers Of The 38th.......2005-09-09
How did a boy 190 miles away end up enlisting in the 38th Alabama Infantry Regiment at Ft. Gaines, Ala., in a Company designated for a County other than his own? Art Green explains how in this book. After 5 yrs of fruitless searching, with his information, and the detailed personal accounts provided about my ancestor, this book led me on a journey to my ancestor's burial spot within the Unknown Cofederate Dead Section of Atlanta's Oakland Cemetery. A true treasure for 38th Alabama Infantry descendants.
Geneology, not Civil War history.......2002-07-12
It was quite a disappointment to find that almost 300 pages of this 400 page book were dedicated to a roster. The roster appears to come directly from the National Archives compiled service records. Only 39 pages are dedicated to telling the history of the regiment. The roster is just the basic information from the Natl. Archives and there is no indepth statistical analysis of the regiment. This book is very basic and would rank near the bottom of regimental histories that I have read over the past decade.
Geneology, not Civil War history.......2002-07-10
If you are interested in Civil War history I would recommend that you leave this book on the shelf. However if you have a family member who served in the regiment then it might be a nice keepsake. Less than 40 pages are devoted to the history of the regiment and you would be just as well off to read the regiment's reports in the Official Record. Most of the pages are filled with the names of roster of the regiment.
There is very little to grab hold of in this book. Even the roster seems to be limited to what was found on the National Archives Compiled Service Records. Overall a real disappointment and not at all what I was expecting.
A Great Reference to the Men of the Thirty Eighth.......1999-06-29
This is a well written, well researched book on the men of the 38th Alabama Infantry. It's obvious that the author spent many, many hours of research to produce this work. If you had relatives in the War of Northern Agression, or any interest at all, this is a "must have" for your bookshelf, although it won't be on your bookshelf much. There is interesting facts on hundreds of the men who fought for what they believed in. Very, very interesting reading.

Book Description
This book describes the development of the Army and its evolution from the colonial armies of Federation to the modern, professional force it is today. It reveals that the Army's organization is the result of complex interactions between the government's fiscal and security policies, the
desires of the public, and the ambitions of military leaders.
