Variety is the spice of life.......2002-10-07
This is a fantastic compendium of many of the best chefs in America and some of their finest preparations. You've got Romano, Vongerichten, Boulud, Keller, O'Connell...even relative newcomers like Patricia Yeo and Wylie Dufresne. It is an outstanding resource for getting a taste of the various styles and approaches...including multiple no-stir risotto recipes and other kitchen hints. Preparation times and a recipe index are provided to make this a very well done production, including a photo for one of each chef's preparations (each chef gets about half a dozen recipes included).
The meals are mostly accessible to the home cook and very clearly presented. They were obviously kitchen-tested in order to get into the New York Times from where these recipes are drawn, so no bogus preparations. Plus these chefs didn't hold anything back seeing as the New York Times is read by their target demographic and it's a competitive arena.
Anyone who wants to kick their culinary skills up a few thousand notches over Emeril & the food TV gang ought to invest wisely in this delectable tome.

I found this book to be just wonderful! I especially liked the way the author uses her life stories to illustrate the virtues and I have gained a new perspective on several virtues -- most especially Compassion and Integrity. Thank you Chrissie, Rebecca and Suzanne for an invaluable book filled with warm stories and deep faith.
A must read for every family.......2000-11-29
Garden of Virtues is a fundamental tool that parents can use to teach their children the things they need to learn at home. So many children never learn any of these lessons and grow to be the kind of adults we all see in the news doing unspeakable things. I even found virtues in this book that I didn't know were virtues! What a terrific way for parents to show values to children (wonderfully illustrated).

I have read 5-6 books on child rearing and tried several "approaches". They all felt so stilted and programed. By chance I stumbled onto this book and I am thrilled. I decided I would "force myself" to read through it and see what I came away with...well I am 3/4 of the way through and loving every page. Not preachy at all but rather like a really good friend who gives really good advice. Of course it is not nessarily a how-to for child raising but it is an invaluable tool.
Another Great Christmas Present!.......2000-10-30
For the last few years, I've given the GARDEN OF VIRTUES CALENDAR for Christmas presents to the parents of my nieces, nephews, godchildren and grandchildren. I am thrilled to learn of this companion book! The colorful, creative illustrations makes it fun to read and learn for both adults and children. I especially enjoyed the real-life personal stories the authors used to highlight the different virtues. Reading the book with my husband, we were reminded of some important virtues that we've forgotten to practice! All in all, this is a delightful "feel-good" book that will help to bring families and couples closer together. I strongly reccommend it!
Wonderful Example for Parents and Children.......2000-05-31
This book has excellent illustrations while it clearly explains the virtues in a language everyone can understand. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who would like to explore virtues such as humility, rseponsibility, and justice. Even the kids can use The Garden of Virtues as a reference with simple definitions to help them use the virtues in their own lives.

Make your environmental lab--and lab technicians' work practices--the safest possible. *Protect workers from hazardous material they handle on-site *Protect the civilian population from harm in a hazardous materials emergency *Prevent accidents before they happen The purpose of Safe Work Practices for the Environmental Laboratory is twofold: 1.For the person designated as the laboratory's Chemical Hygiene Officer or Safety Officer, this text is a user friendly reference that will provide a format, a template, a guide to compliance with OSHA's Laboratory Standard (29 CFR 1910.145); and 2.for the person who is assigned to work in the environmental laboratory, this user-friendly text provides the information needed not only to perform routine laboratory tasks correctly, but also to perform them safely. The environmental lab is involved with performing analytical testing and sampling protocols relating to air, soil, biosolids, sludges, drinking water, wastewater, groundwater, stormwater, waste characterization, petroleum products, and HRSD/NPDES effluent studies. Many wastewater treatment plants and water works have their own environmental laboratories. These labs primarily perform analysis of process conditions to ensure optimization of the process. However, even these small labs (a few are quite large) perform "environmental sampling" and therefore are environmental labs. The actual genesis of the environmental laboratory can be attributed to the environmental regulations that have been generated by USEPA, AOAC, ASTM, NIOSH, OSHA, and other regulatory and advisory entities. The typical environmental laboratory contains several different types of hazards the lab worker must guard against. This is the case even though modern environmental laboratories have been designed to take maximum advantage of engineering controls that work to "engineer-out" most hazards. The main hazard discussed in this text has to do with hazardous materials--dangerous chemicals and compounds--and the effect they can have on work practices. OSHA is quite specific in regard to protecting the laboratory worker from harm that could result from handling hazardous materials--these specifics are discussed in detail throughout this text. It is important to point out that this text will provide the user with more than just a "safety book." For example, this text provides the user with a sample Chemical Hygiene Plan, it discusses various safe work practices for standard operating procedures normally performed in the environmental laboratory, and it discusses procedures to use for emergency response activities, such as clean-up of chemical spills. The bottom line is that probably the most important benefit to be derived from using this text is the exposure the user receives to the lessons and examples presented throughout the text; these lessons learned and examples provide information on how to make your environmental laboratory and the performance of your individual work practices safer. When you get right down to it, isn't this what a safety text should be all about?
