Future Trends In Building Design.......2000-03-27

Audubon House has become one of the finest examples of the possibility inherent in Sustainable Design practices. This book does an excellent job of passing on to the reader the strategy, effort, and technology that was incorporated into the building's renovation. The book has served to embolden my own interest in the subject while simultaneously educating me on facets of design to which I was previously unaware.

Excellent 'Handbook' for design modeling..........2004-03-25

This text does prove and excellent `handbook' covering a wide variety of modeling techniques. While Trudeau does not tend to go into great detail, its treatment of each subject is practical and clearly presented. Though the examples may not provide new insight "for Architects" using traditional modeling materials (i.e. chipboard or foam core) it is certainly a valuable resource for product designers or other design professionals working in more involved mediums where such supporting texts are few and far between.

Overall an good resource, especially for students interested in accelerating their model making experience.

I chose this book to help with a new model, and because the book's title claims it is "for Architects." The actual information for architects is meager and sophomoric. The book appears to focus more on sculptural models for product designers. Despite its title, this book had nothing to offer me.

A "must have" for any modelmaker........1997-10-22

I am a professional modelmaker. Initially I was glad to find anything written about the craft as a profession. After reading through it more than a couple of times, I beleive it to be a well written book. It is very informative, with its "hands on" way of explaining a topic. It is also filled with great photos. I highly reccommend this book to students or anyone interested in the design or engineering fields.

Photojournalism.......2004-06-02

One word? Awesome.

If someone want to see colors then he better look for pictures of parrots, rainbows, snakes, bugs, peacock, children etc etc.

The books is best example of photo journalism. In photo-journalism, no one look for colors or sharpness or distractions in pictures or cropping or placement of subject in picture. Definitely they are nice to have but if picture is telling some story then it conveyed its message it completed its job. Period.

I really believe this book fell way short of the mark.Other than taking a few snapshots with a point and shoot camera,I am not a photographer.You don't need to be an artist to enjoy art,a musician for music,a writer for literature;but when arts are well done, they should enthrall the public.While there are some of the more famous photos of the past 150 years,there are many that are just run of the mill.The book gives a history of photojournalism,it does not give the impression that the photographers have really anvanced the art.One even gets the feeling that the introduction of color has made the photographers lazy,trying to let color do the work for them rather than using it as an artistic tool.I don't really believe that is the case;it's just that the auhors haven't done that great of a job,in my estimation.With the writers access to the photos that Time must have,I get the feeling that very little effort or ability went into this book.Let's hope someone else will give it a try and do a better job of it.

Magnificent Coverage of A Mysterious Life.......2003-10-04

Chance Harvey has produced a real page-turner for devotees of New Orleans literature. Lyle Saxon's stature as one of the inventors of the New Orleans and Louisiana image (along with Lafcadio Hearn, Grace King and G.W. Cable) is well-known; but the man behind the mask is not. Ms. Harvey's narrative is well-balanced-she never loses perspective or sympathy for this self-tormented soul as he descends into alcoholism and depression. His relationships with Sherwood Anderson and William Faulkner are well described, as is the dawn of the Roaring 20s in New York.

Nits I would I pick-and these are minor: There should have been a few more pages about his influence on the revival of the French Quarter in the 1920s. His influence on, and unselfish patronage of, struggling writers is alluded to but never brightly illuminated. Also, an afterwords listing the further lives and fates of his close friends would have been a nice coda.

All in all, this is one of those essential books for those who want to 'drill down' into the image and literary richness of New Orleans and Louisiana.

Unintentionally Hilarious.......1999-04-29

Poor Kathie Lee. Her book is designed to show us that she is such a sweet kind loving attentive mother. If you read the book with any degree of attention, you will see that she is a very disturbed woman, and that dear little Cody is well on his way to serial-killerdom.

By the Autumn of 1863 the tide of war appeared to be running heavily against the Confederacy. Lee's attack into Maryland had been halted at Gettysburg and he had fallen back into Virginia to lick his wounds; in the Mississippi Valley Vicksburg, the last Confederate hold on the river, had fallen to the tenacious Grant, and in the mountains around Chattanooga in eastern Tennessee General Rosecrans' Union Army of the Cumberland was pausing after driving out the Confederate Army of the Tennessee without a shot being fired. Confederate commander General Braxton Bragg had been out-manoeuvred but was far from beaten. Reinforced by troops from Mississippi and Virginia on 19th September he attacked the Union army along Chickamauga creek south of Chattanooga. Chickamauga is an Indian name meaning 'river of death' and this was to prove to be the bloodiest two days of the war. For the first day Union lines held but on the second a gap appeared in the Union lines into which General J. Longstreet marched. The entire Union right collapsed and the army retreated headlong for Chattanooga, all except General George H. Thomas' Corps who fought on doggedly until nightfall delaying the confederate advance, saving the Union and earning his fame as the "Rock of Chickamauga".

As with the other titles in Osprey's Campaign Series, 'Chickamauga 1863: The River of Death' presents the history of this famous battle of The War Between The States in a factual and easy-to-read text. Of particular note are the many photos and artists renderings as well as the orders of battle for both the Confederate and Union forces. One is introduced to such pivotal figures as Nathan Bedford Forrest, James Longstreet, Braxton Bragg, Patrick Cleburne, George Thomas, and William Rosecrans. The contributions of these men to the battle, as well as those of lesser-known officers and enlisted men, are recounted in a even-handed but quick-paced and enjoyable manner. After digesting this 96 page book one cannot help but have a better understanding of The Battle of Chickamauga as well as its causes and effects.
