Bad CD.......2007-04-02
This is an interesting book, but is marked down because the CD does not open on the Macintosh, even though it is supposed to be OS X compatible. The publisher provides no work-around to the problem.
Not recommended.
Scamming Students?.......2006-09-28
This book appears to be exactly the same as "A World History of Architecture" (Paperback) by the same authors and available on Amazon for $33.64 without the CD. The number of pages, table of contents, and intro sentence are exactly the same. It seems more than slightly shady to me to sell the exact same book with two different names.
This book is required reading for my Architectural History class and was for sale at my school's bookstore for $100. My stodgy old professor isn't teaching from the CD. I am not giving these people my money, I got my copy at the library.

How to Start and Succeed as an Artist is the definitive guide for both devoted amateurs and beginning professionals wanting to make art a tangibly rewarding career or avocation. Acclaimed editor and art world insider Daniel Grant draws upon the expertise of working artists to compile a rich resource of advice on developing skills, effective studio practices, exhibiting and selling artwork, staying inspired and productive, and taking the necessary steps to reach the public. Grant covers the practical matters of being an artist, such as setting up a studio, selecting safe art materials, framing, packing and shipping art, as well as the wisdom gained from the insights and true-life stories of artists both well known and successful on their own terms. Filling a unique niche in the literature today, How to Start and Succeed as an Artist provides the inside information needed to prosper in any artistic endeavor, including a comprehensive appendix of helpful resources.
Customer Reviews:
Good, but dated and not for all artists.......2006-01-04
This is a good starting overview of how to get started as a serious and/or professional artist, as long as you keep two things in mind:
1, it was written in 1997, and certain sections (particularly promotion) are too dated to be helpful in the age of the Internet.
2, it is written from the perspective of the "art world" scene, and if you aren't a painter, or perhaps a sculptor, you are not going to get a lot out of this book.
An informative book for visual artists at any level........2002-01-24
Although not being completely satisfied with the "succeed" part of the title, I have no problem giving this book a 5-star (or perhaps a 4.5-star to be strict) rating. It is a tell-all book for artists at any level.
The book covers basically all the phases in the development of an artist's career life; from training to becoming famous and wealthy. The author does a thorough job discussing the pro's and con's of each solution to the needs of the artists to obtain training, as well as to market their work. For instance, comparisons are made between getting a formal training (art degree) at Universities and other options such as participating in workshops, continuing study programs, correspondence classes, and self-teaching using art instruction books and videocassettes. Using the same approach, the author moves on to discussion on the benefits and drawbacks of renting a studio vs. having a studio at home, along with other issues such as studio safety and insurance. Other issues such as exhibiting one's work, framing, shipping artworks, how to get involved in art clubs, how to overcome mental blocks and seek artistic inspiration, success stories, etc. are also discussed in great detail. In addition, a nice appendix including information about art dealers and art supplies stores at the end of the book makes the book complete.
In closing, this is the book that every artist will find something "hits home" when reading it. The only thing that I might complain about the book is that the appendix does not provide internet addresses of the stores/dealers cited, considering a lot of these stores do have internet sites, some of which I am a regular client of.

Average or a bit below "how to" on photographic portraiture.......2007-01-08
I didn't know who Michael Grecco was before coming across this book - and learning his "creative lighting techniques and strategies" won't make an iota of difference in my life.
Most of the Grecco portraits shown in this book are unappealing to me. Instead of naturally striking, they appear strained and posed for effect. A photograph of two actors from a one-time hit TV series has them scowling into the camera with large shadows against the wall. So what? But Grecco claims this is the "noir" look he was after. If you look at the classics of noir cinematography and the publicity stills for those films, you'll see in a moment that this is not noir, but pale and poor imitation of noir.
Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery - and Grecco does go in heavily for imitation - but it does not necessarily produce striking photographs. And none of the photographs in this book are striking.
Worse, none of them are in color, although the originals clearly were. (Grecco says so in many instances.)
Crude sketches showing the light placement accompany each of the photos, but lend little. For example, no great genius is required to see that in one photo taken outdoors, a single fill light was employed. But this fact is dutifully recorded along with the outline of the pier it was taken on, the river behind the pier and the unmistakable skyline of Manhattan on the other side of the river. I mean, talk about meaningless froth.
Grecco obviously makes a good living peddling his style to magazines, but I'm not impressed by his skills as a photographer or a writer.

Exactly what I needed!.......2001-08-23
I am so grateful to have stumbled upon this wonderful book. I have been wanting to push myself as a portrait photographer, and feel that my use of available light is tremendously limiting as far as location and creativity are concerned. Michael's book describes in detail the equipment he uses, the lighting setups, and the concepts behind the shoots he has done for Entertainment Weekly, Premiere, etc. I can feel that this book is going to help me take my work to another level, and I recommend it to any artist ready to challenge themselves. Thanks much, Michael Grecco, for sharing your knowledge.
The very best book on lighting and portraiture........2000-10-18
Grecco is a master of light. This book is educational, entertaining, and very well written. Grecco illustrates his lighting concepts with examples of his cutting edge portraiture, and excellent lighting diagrams. I would recommend this book for all photographers, from students, to enthusiasts, to seasoned pros....................

Thinking "Outside of the Box".......2000-04-26
If you want to learn to think "outside of the box" of traditional portrait lighting, this is the book. You may not like everything he does, but his imagination and technique are outstanding. The only problem is the lack of color in the book.
Great Illustration of How One Photographer Uses Light.......2000-02-03
I enjoyed the ideas Michael Grecco has for using light. The examples are well-explained so the reader can come up with his own ideas. I highly recommend this book if you're looking for new ideas for lighting or needing to learn how to use light when taking photographs.

Book Description
It's 1945 and Tommy lives in the tough multi-ethnic neighborhood of Lowertown, Ottawa, where someone who hates Jewish people has attacked his best friend's father. Adopting the persona of his favorite radio hero, Tommy, aka. "The Shadow," teams up with friends "Killer" Bodnoff and CoCo Laframboise to find out who did it, but soon realizes that the quest will lead them straight to Angel Square - a fearsome battleground where Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish kids fight each other daily. Still, if Tommy can find the culprit, he's convinced Mr. Rosenberg will recover and his pal Sammy will return from the faraway town where his dad is hospitalized. And could it be that, in the process, Tommy will also manage to impress the girl of his dreams, Margot Lane? In the course of his search, Tommy learns about the forces that divide communities, as well as those that unite them.
Customer Reviews:
Angel Square.......2005-06-09
Angel Square is an exciting, suspenseful and historic novel. This book takes place after World War II. If you like mystery, this is the book for you. Young Tommy sees his best friend's dad get beaten up. Tommy goes on a quest to find out who beat up Sammy's dad and why? Will Tommy find out who beat up Sammy's dad? So many exciting events happen to Tommy in this book; for example when Tommy tries to make money to buy Christmas presents for his family. There are so many more exciting events happen in this book, I would love to tell you more but I would not like to spoil the book for you. I recommend this book to people who love exciting, humorous novel. I would recommend for this book for the 9-12 age group.
An interesting book.......2000-10-30
Tommy, aka the Shadow, is the main character of this book. A middle class kid growing up in post world war two, tommy and his friend Gerald try to find out who beat up their friend's father. I found this book to br fairly interesting, writen in the style of any young boy who thinks of himself as a great detective or whatnot. The characters are very human, all with their own habits, ect. The plot could have had some more dillema in it , though.

Book Description
On the north Yorkshire coast of England lies a forgotten bay - Chameleon Bay, home to a rambling collection of buildings known as Phoenix Square. As the new century dawns, the Square is run by an ebullient man by the name of Whitworth. The buildings contain artists, bohemians and a large collection of dubious "literature." Enter Troy, a young man reunited with his sister Lucinda for the first time, full of hope that he has found his family - little suspecting the betrayal ahead. From the recently discovered diaries of Troy comes this account of magic, superstition and sinister goings on.
Customer Reviews:
Quirky but fun.......2006-06-01
I really enjoyed this quirky book. The narrator is, by his own admission, a tad repetitive when it comes to his sister. But other than that it is quite engaging. A man was separated from his sister at a young age. She comes to find him and they takes rooms and Phoenix Square, a famous artist residence. Once there she seems preoccupied and not at all interested in making a happy family reunion. The brother makes friends with several quirky locals and gets caught up in a moral crusade. It's all quite fun.

Book Description
Most of Alexander Posey’s short and remarkable life was devoted to literary pursuits. Through a widely circulated satirical column published under the pseudonym Fus Fixico, he did much to document and draw attention to conditions in Indian Territory. He rose to prominence among the Creeks and played a leading role as spokesman on a number of serious political issues. Daniel F. Littlefield Jr. has written the first full biography of Alexander Posey, a pioneer of American Indian literature and a shaper of public opinion.

Book Description
The 1864 Sand Creek Massacre is one of the most disturbing and controversial events in American history. While its historical significance is undisputed, the exact location of the massacre has been less clear. Because the site is sacred ground for Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians, the question of its location is more than academic; it is intensely personal and spiritual.
In 1998 the National Park Service, under congressional direction, began a research program to verify the location of the Sand Creek site. The team consisted of tribal members, Park Service staff and volunteers, and local landowners. In Finding Sand Creek, the project's leading historian, Jerome A. Greene, and its leading archaeologist, Douglas D. Scott, tell the story of how this dedicated group of people used a variety of methods to pinpoint the site. Drawing on oral histories, written records, and archaeological fieldwork, Greene and Scott present a wealth of evidence to verify their conclusions. Greene and Scott's team study led to legislation in the year 2000 that established the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site.
Customer Reviews:
Scientific, Moving, Spiritual - (How about better and COLOR photographs??!!).......2006-05-24
The book is very engaging - combining historical narative with the methodical process of scientific archeology and exploration.
Several things would have made the book better and more comprehensive:
1 - More exposition on the native American oral histories (details)
2 - For crying out loud .. how about better, more and COLOR photographs of the site !! :-) (Esp. since it will still be years before public is granted access)
Sand Creek Is Found -- Time To Heal.......2004-10-16
From November 29 through December 1, 1864, over 700 U.S. volunteer soldiers, under the command of Col. John M. Chivington, reveled in their ghoulish and merciless bloodbath scourged upon 150 dead and dying Cheyenne and Arapahos. Their leader did nothing to stop the carnage; instead he encouraged it. This was the Sand Creek Massacre.
For 135 years the location of the Sand Creek Massacre, like its one time inhabitants, hid from sight as if it were still avoiding the deadly fire from the U.S. volunteers. All efforts, both noble and immoral, failed to reveal the actual site of the village and its slaughter tributaries, until now.
Those noble efforts were attempts to preserve the site. However, where exactly was the site to preserve? In 1998 Congress passed P.L. 105-243, the Sand Creek Massacre Site Study Act of 1998, which called for the National Park Service, the State of Colorado, and the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes to work together to locate the massacre site. Locating it was a prerequisite to the NPS guardianship.
The efforts that finally located the massacre site are told in Jerome Greene and Douglas Scott's new book, "Finding Sand Creek: History, Archeology, and the 1864 Massacre Site." This highly anticipated and scholarly work is well worth the wait. Both authors hold impeccable credentials. Greene is Research Historian for the NPS in Denver and has published extensively on the Plains Indian Wars. Scott is Great Plains Team Leader for the NPS Midwest Archeological Center. He pioneered the use of metal detecting in the study of battlefield archeology with landmark projects at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, Washita Battlefield National Historic Site, and Big Hole National Battlefield.
Greene tells the tale in a succinct, but complete listing of events leading up to, during, and after the massacre. But, "Finding Sand Creek", like its title, is not the story of the massacre but the incredible account of finally locating Black Kettle's village, and the Sand Pits used by the non-combatants in attempts to conceal themselves from the carbines and 12-pounder mountain howitzers.
The detective like chronicle includes the use of multi-disciplines in history, archeology, and tribal accounts, as well as the use of historical maps, aerial photography, and USGS maps.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the research is the map of the massacre site drawn by 2nd Lt. Samuel W. Bonsall of the Third U.S. Infantry at Fort Lyon. Bonsall drew his map only four years after the massacre. The authors provide the reader a most fascinating series of events around Bonsall and his map. The map was discovered in 1992. Douglas Scott shared with me the story behind the discovery of this map and its importance to the research in finding the massacre site.
"The discoverer of the Bonsall map is Scott Forsythe. His is an archivist with the Chicago Branch of the National Archives. He found it in the engineer's reports for the Department of the Missouri that are held by that branch. It should not have been there, but it was.
When Jerry Greene recognized the significance of the map and pointed it out to the team members it allowed us to develop a research/inventory plan that focused on that area. We did not exclude any area as noted in the book, but with the information derived from the map we worked around the area, eliminating possibilities and then inventoried the "probable" area, which turned out to have the archeological evidence of the attack. The map...allowed us to formulate a plan to work and eliminate other suspect areas in a more structured manner."
The question most will ask is, "How can the archeological record prove that this village site was the one attacked by Chivington on November 29, 1864?" Scott and Greene provide the definitive answer to that question and the answer will surprise you.
The Sand Creek Massacre, raged upon the village of Black Kettle, transformed a peaceful village into a hell on earth and a dark black spot on Colorado history. The results from finally locating the site are significant; preservation, and the peace and healing that may follow for the Cheyenne and Arapaho. We can thank Jerome Greene, Douglas Scott, and the National Park Service for a job well done. I highly recommend this book - it is a must addition to any student's library interested in the Plains Indian Wars, Colorado history, and Archeology.

Book Description
With her trademark blend of probing scholarship, lively prose and psychological insight, Carolly Erickson focuses on each monarchs entire lifefrom the puny, socially awkward Charles I, to the choleric, violent William the Conqueror, to the well-meaning, deeply affectionate Queen Anne, who was so heavy she had to be carried to her coronation. Royal Panoply recaptures the event-filled, often dangerous, always engaging lives of Englands kings and queens, set against the backdrop of a thousand years of Britains past.

A Satisfy Summary of Royal Monarchs.......2007-01-11
As a lay person, I found this book a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the British Monarchy. Most of my exposure to them has been through plays or movies, touching on a short vignette or period of time. Having recently seen "Henry V," I was interested in reading what happened to him after Agincourt. And "The Lion in the Winter" was a majestic play that left me wondering which of Elinor's sons would become king. This book is easy reading and a delicious look at the royalty.
From 1066 to 2006.......2006-06-13
"Royal Panoply" is an indispensible book for anyone wanting a good, well-written overview of the British monarchy. From William the Conquerer to Elizabeth II, author Carolly Erickson covers the good, the bad and the plain incompetent. It is all of English Royal history in one volume.
Carolly Erickson began her career writing about the Tudors and the Stuarts, so it is not surprising that she is at her best when writing about those reigns. Her brief analysis of those characters who limned the golden age of the English renaissance are the best in the book. She is on less sure, and more gossipy, ground in the chapters on the more modern kings and queens of Great Britain.
Erickson's later writing has suffered in comparison with her first efforts at historical biography, especially "The First Elizabeth" and "Great Harry." She has even condescended to write historical fiction, a "hidden" journal of Marie Antoinette.
With this valuable volume in hand, the eager student of English history will find fascinating facts and tidbits on all of England's Majesties.
From 1066 to today: A succinct survey of Great Britains royalty.......2006-05-17
Dr. Carolly Erickson is a prolific author of historical fictin as well as excellent nonfiction works. Her area of expertise is in medieval and Renaissance literature. Nevertheless, she does a good job of survey all the English kings and queens from William the Conqeror in 1066 to the reign of Elizabeth II.
Along the way the reader will read of countless murders, cabals, plagues, wars, adulteries and dynastic battles for power.
There is nothing new here for the serious British historian;
the book is written for a popular audience in need of getting
the basics of British history in their heads. The book would be
an excellent resource for courses in English history and literature. It is well illustrated and is a worthy addition to the library. It can be read from cover to cover or a particular
monarch can be studied to coincide with the reader's interest.
No matter how many biographies and history of England I have read this book is valuable because it:
a. Refreshed my memory on key events that have become murky.
b. Reminded me of how the fight for constitutional liberty in
a democratic nation was a hard, bitter and complex struggle.
Well done and worthy of your time and money!
intriguing overview of the royals and their spouses .......2006-05-03
Starting with William the Conqueror and finishing with Elizabeth II and including every English monarch in between, Carolyn Erickson provides an intriguing overview of the royals and their spouses in a chronological fascinating sweep. Each ruler receives somewhere in the range of seven to twelve pages regardless of historical importance or length on the throne. By going chronological, the reference is easy to read and follow, but repetition also occurs as death marks the end of an era (chapter) and the beginning of the next reign (next chapter). The epigraph that starts each royal provides an interesting perspective on that personage and is especially fascinating with the more famous as the audience sees a somewhat differing view than the textbooks or romance novels. Still the lack of analysis of overarching trends takes somewhat away from a fine look that will elate those who prefer their look at the English monarchy based on facts not tabloids.

Good Reference Book.......2007-09-24
This author assumes that the reader lives in the UK and you happen to know where all the regions are located (I had to keep glancing at the maps). The interesting thing though is that he covers all monarchs from like 100 BC and all regions, but I ended up just skipping all those parts as I couldn't pronounce the names or the places (especially the welsh names how the heck to do you say "ap" or is this an abbreviation for something?). Also he covers each one so quickly you can't even get the chronology straight in your head. The book does have good geneological and chronological tables though. "Brief" is exactly information the book gives.
Hefty tome covering all Brit royals.......2003-11-18
With individual portraits of all the kings of Britain, no one could accuse this of incompleteness, but the solemn tone and lengthy paragraphs make for a rather dry read.
Billed as from "Alfred the Great to the Present" it begins long before Alfred, with overviews of the Celts, the Roman Occupation, and the Dark Ages. Ashley's organising principle, unity versus disunity within Britain, results in some confusing arrangement of material. For example, in the first Section, Kingdom Against Kingdom: Early Britain: after "The House of Normandy 1066-1154" he backtracks several hundred years to the Kingdoms of Wales (500-1240) and Scotland (850-1165). Then the narrative resumes in 1154 with The House of Anjou.
This mine of information, though daunting at first glance, covers monarchs' appearance, character, consorts, political, social, religious and cultural history. Among 100 pages of appendices are lists of Roman emperors and governors, kings of British provinces, royal consorts, family trees. The massive bibliography, handy for historic royal watchers, precedes the index.
You would probably want something more snappy and anecdotal on your shelf as well as this. However it's worth investing in as a reference source.

Book Description
Developing Performance Support for Computer Systems: A Strategy for Maximizing Usability and Learnability provides detailed planning, design, and development guidance for generating performance support for new or upgraded computer systems. Performance support includes documentation, online help, coaches and wizards, training, and other materials necessary to enable users to perform their jobs more efficiently and effectively. This volume offers a strategy for maximizing ease-of-use and ease-of-learning through an integrated performance support systems approach. The text provides how-to guidance throughout that developers can apply directly to the design of their performance support tools and products. Rather than cover a few specific topic areas, it examines the entire spectrum of performance support. The book explains how to match performance support methods to task requirements, gives an overview of important user characteristics, and provides general guidance for presentation, layout, formatting, media selection, the use of color and icons, and accessibility. Evaluation checklists are included in the appendices and are also available online.
