Book Description
Offering stylish yet affordable housing for the average person, the bungalow took the nation by storm in the early 20th century, and was rediscovered in earnest in 1996 with the publication of the authors' American Bungalow Style. That book, the first lavishly illustrated showcase of bungalows, reminded us all of the seductive appeal that had made these charming little homes so popular. This much-anticipated follow-up book takes readers into the living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and baths of the best and most characteristic bungalows from five American neighborhoods where this housing type has flourished: Washington, DC, Chicago, Seattle, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Pasadena.
Bungalows, while modestly sized, are known for their integrity of design and craftsmanship, and their shape lends itself to a variety of stylistic treatments, from Colonial Revival to Craftsman to Tudor, all displayed in Bungalow Nation. With 350 of Alexander Vertikoff's evocative new photographs from his recent travels and Diane Maddex's reliable, fact-filled text, Bungalow Nation is sure to be an important resource for bungalow lovers and an enticing entrée for those who are just discovering these gems of American domesticity.
Customer Reviews:
Their bungalow heaven.......2006-05-10
The bungalow is uniquely suited to the homeowner of today: solidly built of good natural materials, unpretentious, yet capable of modification and expansion; usually set in a pleasant and roomy yard, and big enough for the "typical family of four" to inhabit without getting in one another's faces. For these reasons, many cities have seen a "bungalow boom" that has driven up the price of these cozy houses. If you're thinking about a bungalow but aren't sure you want to invest all that money, this book may help you decide. Chock full of all-color photographs, it shows the variations in style and modification possible to the type, the lovingly created details typically found in it, and the ways in which many bungalow owners have contrived to furnish their homes authentically. With a book or two about Craftsman or Stickley furniture, it should provide you with ideas galore about what's possible to a bungalow. And if you simply enjoy looking at pictures of small, simple, yet well-made American houses, it's a volume you're sure to enjoy. For restorationists, decorators, historians, and architecture buffs, it's a beautiful and indispensable volume.
Homes to Emulate.......2006-04-07
When I bought a 1920's bungalow a year ago, I checked out every arts and crafts and bungalow book I could get my hands on. This one rose to the top. Perhaps I'm a little biased because a good portion of the homes featured in the book are located in the Twin Cities, where I live. But the thing I really like about Bungalow Nation, besides the lovely quality of the photograhps, is that it provides excellent inspiration for the interior decoration of arts and crafts style homes.
If you have a bungalow, or just love the style, you will adore this book.
truly lovely homage to the American bungalow.......2004-08-08
Bungalow Nation is a truly sumptuous and detailed look at American bungalows. With color pictures on every page, this book is a wonderful balance of text and graphics. The author's text and the photographs by Alexander Vertikoff together present a well-rounded introduction to bungalow style through brief looks at over 75 specific examples of bungalow architecture.
In a chapter called "In The Land Of The Bungalow" the book starts with a brief history of the origins and growth of the architectural style and its place in American history. This chapter is followed by brief treatments of specific aspects of bungalow style: the outside, porches, the inside, fireplaces, built-ins, and furnishings.
Then the author and photographer take us to five different cities to look at examples of bungalows in each. Sample bungalows in Los Angeles, Seattle, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Chicago and Washington DC are highlighted in two to four page spreads. Each house has a description and history of the house and some information on the current owners. This is followed by some photographs of specific features with captions describing each.
The book ends with a bibliography and lists of organizations and architects in each of the five areas highlighted.
This is a lovely book. The bugalows are beautifully photographed. The endpapers are sheet music for the song "In The Land Of the Bungalow" by George F. Devereaux. The cover has a color print of a crewel embroidery of dragonflies. It is a labor of love that is a delight to read and a treat to the eyes. If you love bungalows, this is the book for you.
I got this book because I am planning to remodel the kitchen and bath of my 1930 bungalow and was looking for ways to do so while retaining the original integrity of the house. This book has given me the ideas I need to move forward with confidence.
Love affair with the bungalow.......2003-12-21
I live in a California Craftsman bungalow and therefore gravitated immediately to this book when I saw it in Builders Booksource in Berkeley, CA. It's absolutely lovely: the story of 75 bungalows in LA, Seattle, Chicago, DC, and Minneapolis. I was surprised that Berkeley wasn't included, but the homes shows epitomize America's love affair with these cozy, well-built structures. Included are features on porches, fireplaces, numerous built-ins, furnishings, landscaping, and interior/exterior decoration. You'll love this book, as I do.

Experience wild weather through spectacular photographs
Grab your slicker, hold on to your hat, and get ready to experience one of the most dangerous and exciting jobs in the world--storm chasing with Warren Faidley.
"Eye-catching...Dramatic full-color photos of lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes are a vivid testimony to the dedicated efforts of Warren Faidley, storm chaser and photographer. Kramer's readable, exciting text allows readers to ride with Faidley in his specially equipped vehicle, Shadow Chaser, as he races to intercept likely tornado or lightning producers." --School Library Journal, starred review
"Kramer's narrative, generously embellished with Faidley's photos, follows this professional storm chaser along his various treks, lucidly explaining both the prevailing weather systems and the photographic challenges presented by each atmospheric phenomenon....Kramer keeps the tone immediate and tense." --The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
Customer Reviews:
A smaller "Strom Chaser".......1998-10-08
This book is a beautiful summery of Faidley's "Storm Chaser" for kids. The photos are simply breadth-taking and incredible. Most kids would be more interested in storm chasing than storms itself, but Faidley will use his wonderful photos to arouse their curiosity about the science behind our violent atmosphere. If the words can't leave them gasping awe, the photographs will.

Pioneering Infromation/Knowledge Based Management Concept.......2007-10-03
As a Senior People and Technology Management Consultant, I too have been frustrated by my voice, and the voice of others, not being heard.
I have also advocated that old Industerial Management techniques can not be applied to an Information/Knowledge Worker Based Management Era with emphessis on Empowerment, Teamwork, and Communal Efforts.
With 25+ years of management in startups and major corporations, I have realized that Mr. Covey's 8th habit, is the foundation to manage and lead greatness, innovation, empwerment, and super effectivity.
Ideas and concepts presented here, including the "Indian Talking Stick" are in agreement with some of the best management and leadership best practices such as the "HP Way", Dale Carnegie, and others.
There are also outstanding examples and suggestions to solve leadership problems.
A must reading!

Habit for Humanity.......2007-09-30
Find your voice and inspire others to do the same. That's habit number eight. To find your voice there must be a conscience-based unity of mind, heart, body, and spirit. As an example, for a person to be fulfilled at work s/he needs to be able to use his/her talents and gifts (Mind), must be passionate about the work (Heart), must be paid fairly (body), and the work must have meaning (Spirit).
After explaining how to achieve personal voice, Covey shows how to achieve and institutionalize organizational voice. It requires the following:
1) Modeling - or setting an example to develop trust.
2) Pathfinding - creating a vision/mission, values, and strategic goals.
3) Aligning - changing structures, systems, processes, etc. to match the pathfinding.
4) Empowering - unleashing people's creativity and various other capabilities.
The concept of the Indian walking stick as a means of communicating and resolving conflict as well as the trim tabbing analogy for bringing about change are also well worth the price tag.
It's not "The Seven Habits," but it's really hard to go wrong with Covey. He genuinely seems to be focused on helping others improve in order to make the world a better place. Actually, the seven habits do weave their way in and out of this book. It also includes quite a few inspirational stories to include the father who leaves his son with the following advice on his deathbed, "Don't do life like I did. I never made a difference." For the first time the son realizes that he wanted his success to reach higher than him.

Finding Identity for Self and Others.......2007-08-27
As with most of the Covey books, there are nuggets of wisdom hidden within this book, the challenge is to find them. The 8th Habit, (defined as `Find Your Voice and Inspire Others to Find Theirs'), attempts to teach one basic paradigm: That people are whole people - body, mind, heart and spirit. But its focus is on the voice. When this `voice' is defined (on page 5) by Covey as the nexus of talent, passion, need, and conscience, it is easy to relate to this foundation element of human nature - our calling or individual identity - from which our contribution to relationships (work or personal) flows.
After getting this identity piece, what may not be so easy to relate to are the next 323 pages of Covey speak, although there is an interesting discussion on the 4 intelligences - Physical, Mental, Emotional, & Spiritual - woven thru the chapters, and Appendix 2, which contains a literature review of leadership theories, was interesting! This book is recommended for those with the time and patience to pan for gold nuggets in a meandering and slow moving stream.
Stephen Covey did it again!.......2007-08-17
This is the perfect book to follow The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Read this book, get your Voice heard.
Surprised by the punch Covey still has.......2007-08-08
I expected to be underwhelmed by this volume. "More of the Covey machine," I thought. I was wrong. This book can reach a part of you that's beyond what you can get to by applying the first 7 habits. "Life changing" is an understatement.

Customer Reviews:
Hmm - not that great!.......2006-01-30
I was really excited about this book because of the other positive reviews, but was not very impressed. A lot of them require money and resources not everyone has (if you live in Phoenix it is hard to build snowmen!). Also, depending on your own personal values of what is important in life, several of these won't matter for you.
An excellent resource!.......2002-09-05
This is an excellent resource for kids, parents, and teachers. My kids and I loved it!
A "must have" for all parents and parents-to-be.......2002-06-18
Alecia has captured the true meaning of childhood, putting together a comprehensive collection of activities that will captivate children and take their parents back to their own carefree days. A "must have" addition to the library of parents and parents-to-be!

this book is a must for any teacher. i had the pleasure of hearing Jim Delisle speak and his thoughts are excellent. This book is filled with great ideas for a fun yet effective classroom.

This book is the best resource material for all classroom teacher
Customer Reviews:
Terrific ideas to help kids learn to read!.......2003-07-29
This book has many neat ideas like making a special word box with sight words with personal meaning, making personalized books, menus, learning to read nursery rhymes, etc. I think it is a good complement to any phonics instruction. It uses some Montessori games and techniques but it seems much easier to follow and you don't need to spend lots of time and money on complex props. There are extensive templates in the back that can be photocopied. There is a very good list of children's books with categories such as Wordless Books, Chants, Songs and Rhymes, and Vocabulary Controlled Books. The author does not just list the books, she actually writes a great description of each book. My children are making remarkable progress using these activities and they are having fun--I highly recommend this book!

Book Description
The story is legend: the french peasant maid Joan of Arc successfully leads an army against the English and is burned at the stake before she turns twenty. Many have tried to re-create her life, but none have succeeded more brilliantly than Pamela Marcantel in this, her dazzling debut. Here, in dramatic, richly imagined detail, is the full story of the peasant Jhanette, who, at the age of thirteen, is visited by St. Michel, and told she will be known to history at Jehanne the Maid, the girl who would save France from the English. Marcantel paints a fascinating portrait of medieval Europe--a world in which an illiterate girl, chosen by God, can lead an army and never turn back. After more than five hundred years, Joan of Arc lives again in this hypnotic blend of history and storytelling.
Customer Reviews:
Confusing and kind of boring.......2006-03-04
To be honest this book was hard for me to read. I don't know why, but my attention kept slipping away. I think the style this is written in is a little textbook like with very little emotion.
It is nice to learn more about Joan of Arc, but this book has no feeling to it. I had no sense of Joan's divine mission or purpose, and there was no real conflict with those around her. I would have loved to hear more about the Duke that fell in love with Joan, but it just wasn't there.
And the whole reincarnation thing was just odd. I mean, it was sort of implied that Joan was and would be reincarnated but never really stated.
Also, considering that Joan believed god wanted France for the French, maybe the book should have explained why god was against the English. It would have helped me a lot. And then the title would have made sense.
So, three stars. It wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible, but I can't say I'd recommend it.
Joan's charisma held me rapt in this book..........2004-06-22
An Army of Angels is beautifully written, infused with light, faith and a conveyable sense of how this righteous, teenaged peasant girl uplifted the hope of nations. Of how she, despite the dogged stubbornness that moved her and her army beyond Orleans to the Siege of Paris in the face of sensible political opposition, was able to keep the faith in what she felt was right to do. Though her angels warned against it, as she had already fulfilled their task for her. Though doing so led her to be captured, tried and executed.
Facts and Believable Fiction when Facts are not Known........2003-06-14
Much is known and much is not known about Joan. From what I can determine the author follows the facts and fills in with plasable fiction where the facts are not known.
One possible exception; however, is the rape scene. It was too brutal for me and hopefully something that bad (a severe beating followed with multiple rapes) didn't happen. Joan later said, "A great English lord tried to rape me." That indicates no actual rape, but after months (of probable mistreatment) in an English prison plus having some type of schizophrenia (visions) perhaps she could have been in denial.
Emotionally Riveting.......2003-01-03
I read two to three books a week and it is rare for me to find a book as brutally honest as this one. The pull of the characters were so subtle that I had no idea how emotionally involved I was until near the end of the book. I have bought An Army of Angels twice because it has worn out from how many people I insist read it. Definitely worth the time and emotional involvement.
A Book Not To Be Missed.......2002-08-01
It's not every day that a book like this comes along. Historical fiction can be dreadfully dull. Ms. Marcantel, however, has created a fascinating, page-turning, lively, visceral, unforgettable historical fiction book with her "Army of Angels".
Everyone THINKS they know about Joan of Arc, and they focus on the fact that she was burned at the stake. However, there is much, much more to her story than what most people know. Her bravery, her mystic visions, her humanity, the [issues] she put up with from men, her charisma -- why not buy this book and get the REAL story?
You will wish the book was longer after you have finished the last page and closed the cover. Take a journey back in time ... buy this book and give yourself the fun of getting to know the real Joan of Arc.

Book Description
The international cosmetic industry is a highly self-regulated industry that provides quality products with a remarkable absence of toxicity. Specific European Union directives raise the need for quality in vitro methods to yet a new level. These directives will force new practices for safety evaluation of personal care products throughout the world in just a few years. Alternative Methodologies for the Safety Evaluation of Chemicals in the Cosmetic Industry presents a categorization and collection of information available for the evaluation of safety using in vitro techniques. It offers a comprehensive and complete look at the entire field. In doing so, the author provides the foundation for the next phase of significant growth for this discipline. Readers will be able to find information easily throughout the book. The author uses outlines and tables to provide details in a ready format. He puts his unique expertise and insight to paper and offers a valuable and comprehensive look at the field. The book begins with an excellent history of the approach of the European Union. Because of Loprieno's intimate knowledge of the subject, the reader receives a solid understanding of the developments that resulted in legislation. Chapters are filled with important quotes, individual methods, how various aspects of the field were developed, and important crossroads in research. The book ends with an in-depth look at the Galileo Data Base. Alternative Methodologies for the Safety Evaluation of Chemicals in the Cosmetic Industry is extremely useful, not only now, but also as more advanced and significant developments occur during the next decade. It is a must-have resource for anyone interested in this field.
