Book Description
Critic James Wines notes, "The topic of this book, 'un-volumetric architecture' is the search for creative alternatives to the overly volumetric 'shape making' obsessions of international architecture today . . ." Here are over 50 important experimental contemporary designs for public spaces sited throughout the world-earthworks and surface design, canopies and shelters, and other forms of "micro-architecture." As a theory un-volumetric architecture attracted designers including the Acconci studio, Shigeru Ban, Eduard Bru, Manuel de Sola Morales, Isamo Nougichi, Toyo Ito, Wes Jones, Kengo Kuma, Torres & La Pena, Mary Miss, N! Studio, NL architects, Oma, Site, Italo Rota, Sauerbruch & Hutton, and Venturi Scott Brown.

Flash is a great name for an application; who wouldn't want to add flash to their designs? In practice, Macromedia Flash 4 is a complex set of tools for creating animated and interactive graphics that can be played within most up-to-date Web browsers. Flash 4 Visual QuickStart Guide is a well-paced, thorough introduction to all that this powerful application has to offer.
The book begins by introducing the editing environment, including the toolbar, inspectors, menus, and timeline. From there it explains how to create and manipulate objects (graphics) and how to convert them into symbols (Flash's term for oft-used images) that can be stored in libraries.
It covers simple and complex animations, including ones with interactivity--from rollovers to movies with sound and conditional actions. Readers learn how to create frame-by-frame animations, use motion and shape tweening, optimize movies for playback on the Web, and many other key features of Flash.
As with all Visual QuickStart Guides, Flash 4 uses a column of text side by side with screen shots for every step. Readers can set their own pace by reading all of the text, just the steps, or just the illustrations and captions. Skipping ahead or reading the book in a nonlinear fashion is easy since each section recaps any previous steps that may be necessary for that lesson.
Flash 4 is a cross-platform guide, but there are minimal differences between the Windows and Macintosh applications; illustrations are used from either one or the other, but only from both when the differences are significant. This keeps the book lean; readers familiar with how menus look on both platforms will find it very clear.
Flash may not be as complicated as Macromedia Director, but it's not simple either. Becoming fluent in the application will require a few days of study. But with Flash 4 Visual QuickStart Guide, new users can get some basic animations completed in a few hours: a little bit of flash in a little bit of time. --Angelynn Grant
Topics covered: using the editing environment, including the timeline, stage, toolbar, menus and keyboard shortcuts; creating and modifying objects, using layers, saving objects as symbols and using libraries; creating frame-by-frame animations, animations with motion and shape tweening; using masks, movie-clip symbols, interactivity with frame actions and buttons; adding sound to movies, complex interactivity, including conditional actions; preparing a movie for optimal playback on the Web, including Flash Player settings; and publishing HTML for Flash Player files.

ok intro, but of little use after about a day. will get you up to speed, but barely.
Flash 4 for Windows -NOT VERY GOOD!.......2001-12-03
I bought this book, with some prior knowledge of Flash. If you feel like reading the book page-by-page, then buy it! I was looking for more of a reference source that I could turn to, to get info or how to accomplish something or what certain features do. This book is based on previous chapters, meaning that if you skip a chapter you LOST! Each new chapter makes references to prior chapters, such as, "See chapt 4." Overall, I am disappointed with the book, although is does collect dust nicely!
This book is not good for me........2001-04-07
Well I bought this book from amazon.com and I was expecting it to be the best book about flash ever after reading the reviews , but discovered it only have the basic's of flash 4 and the information is not giving in a clear way , I did not enjoy reading the book nor using it , and the book is sitting right up my shelf's doing nothing. So don't waste your money on this book it's not worth it.
get up and running.......2001-03-03
This book will get you up and running in no time. With the online help/tutorials that come in Flash and this book alone, there isn't much keeping you from becoming fluent in Flash (except your own personal learning curve). To be honest, this is the only Flash book that I own. I'm not a Flash wunderkind but I am as literate with the program as I need to be.
If you are looking to delve deep into actionscripting though, this book isn't the one. While it does introduce scripts to you, it doesn't go as deep as you may need it to.

Book Description
I am asked to jot down a few autobiographic odds and ends from such data of record and memory as I may retain. I have been something of a student of life; an observer of men and women and affairs; an appraiser of their character, their conduct, and, on occasion, of their motives. Thus, a kind of instinct, which bred a tendency and grew to a habit, has led me into many and diverse companies, the lowest not always the meanest.

Book Description
Wait Till Next Yearis the story of a young girl growing up in the suburbs of New York in the 1950s, when owning a single-family home on a tree-lined street meant the realization of dreams, when everyone knew everyone else on the block, and the children gathered in the streets to play from sunup to sundown. The neighborhood was equally divided among Dodger, Giant, and Yankee fans, and the corner stores were the scenes of fierce and affectionate rivalries.
We meet the people who influenced Goodwin's early life: her father, who emerged from a traumatic childhood without a trace of self-pity or rancor and who taught his daughter early on that she should say whatever she thought and should bring her voice into any conversation at any time; her mother, whose heart problems left her with the arteries of a seventy-year-old when she was only in her thirties and whose love of books allowed her to break the boundaries of the narrow world to which she was confined by her chronic illness; her two older sisters; her friends on the block; the local storekeepers; her school friends and teachers.
This is also the story of a girlhood in which the great religious festivals of the Catholic church and the seasonal imperatives of baseball combined to produce a passionate love of history, ceremony, and ritual. It is the story of growing up in what seemed on the surface a more innocent era until one recalls the terror of polio, the paranoia of McCarthyism reflected even in the children's games, the obsession with A-bomb drills in school, and the ugly face of racial prejudice. It was a time whose relative tranquillity contained the seeds of the turbulent decade of the sixties.

Wait till Next Year.......2007-07-13
Most interesting for me since I am a "wait till next year" Red Sox fan. She's an excellent writer and commentator and this lives up to her standard.
Really Good Read!.......2007-06-27
Ms. Goodwin knows how to tell a good story. In addition to telling us about her childhood in a New York City suburb in the 1950s, she also talks about the changes America was going through in this time period: economic development and the impact on the family, the beginnings of the civil rights movement, the "end" of baseball as the American pasttime. The book is well-written and very enjoyable.
A great book on taking your daughter to the game!.......2007-04-27
Great book. It inspires me to take my two little girls to games. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A Fan's Notes.......2007-04-10
Goodwin grew up in New York in the 40's, and this memoir tracks her Brooklyn Dodgers through their World Series win in 1956.
Something to Touch the Heart.......2007-03-27
So many people recommended Doris Kearns Goodwin's charming memoir, "Wait Till Next Year," that I couldn't wait to get my hands on it.
Experiencing her youth in the forties and fifties as I and many of my reading friends did, Goodwin struck chords that reverberated movingly with us. Though the story takes place in Rockville Centre, New York, a suburb just a train ride away from Brooklyn, her pictures of herself and her friends in front yards and back yards, her schools and churches, drug store and neighborhood could have been taken in any American suburb of those distant days.
These memories make up a different kind of "fan's notes," as she tracks the ups and downs and near misses of her beloved Brooklyn Dodgers, the team she followed faithfully as a six-year-old in 1949, until "dem bums" finally delivered a World Series championship in 1956. Her team, with Gil Hodges and Roy Campanella, and even their radio announcer, Vin Scully, moved to Los Angeles in 1958 and became my wife's favorite team. My "Whiz Kids," the Philadelphia Phillies of the fifties, with Robin Roberts and Ritchie Ashburn and Eddie Waitkus received mention and reminded my wife and me of the days when you could count on the same players returning loyally to play year after year for the same team.
In addition to the thread of baseball running through the book, Goodwin touches on national events that characterized the times for anyone who lived through them: the death of FDR, the Korean War, the Rosenberg spy case, McCarthyism, and forced school integration in Little Rock. She remembers Elvis and James Dean and covers faithfully the rituals of growing up in the Catholic Church. There is something here to touch the heart of anyone who grew up in those naive times of the 1940s and 1950s.

By meeting three essential longings of their child's heart, readers will discover a more simple, wise, and effective approach to parenting.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
By the end of the 18th century – following an era which had seen the world increasingly divided into colonial powers and their victims – the Ch'ing dynasty of the Manchus, who had overthrown the native Ming in the 1640s, ruled over the largest and most populous empire in the world, with territories that had doubled in size in the previous few decades. Chris Peers’ engaging study of the late imperial Chinese armies from 1520 to 1840 is supported by a wealth of illustrations and photographs, including eight attractive full page colour plates by Christa Hook.
Customer Reviews:
A brief history of Imperial China during the 1520-1840s.......1999-03-17
This is a fairly expensive book for 48 pages but it does a credible job of describing the era in Imperial China between 1520 and 1840. There are eight different paintings of various chinese troops in different armor and many black and white pictures throughout the book showing weapons and statues of the period.
Various essays in the book also describe the armies of the time, some of the weapons and the setting to each era. In all it does a credible overview of the era and is a very good primer for readers interested in the era.
Book Description
After AD 304 the five 'barbarian' tribes divided north China among themselves, setting up dynasties which were often Chinese only in name, and feuding constantly both with each other and with the native states, whose stronghold was now in the south. It was under this barbarian influence that the heavily-armoured cavalry which were to become the striking force of the great T'ang dynasty in the 7th and 8th centuries first developed. In a knowledgeable text complemented by numerous illustrations, this book explores the history, weaponry, tactics and organisation of medieval Chinese armies between 200 BC and AD 589.

Woefully inadequate.......2006-10-23
This book is far too brief to cover almost eight hundred years of Chinese military history. Peers jumps quickly from period to period, providing a very thin summary of each, but not enough for the reader to understand the context of military developments. To make things worse, he makes broad assertions without providing references. Thus, the text is strewn with facts and events without much context.
Treatment of important subjects like tactics and military organisation is very uneven. Very little is said of military institutions. Quite a lot is known, for example, about the organisation of the regular imperial army of the Han dynasty. Even more is known about military ranks, and the military functions of various positions in the bureaucracy. Yet Peers neglects to cover these topics altogether.
The illustrating plates, by Michael Perry, are somewhat clumsy. They seem to reinforce the impression that this book is an amateurish Western conceptualisation of the "Orient". This book is woefully inadequate, even as an introduction to Chinese military history.
Get it for the illustrations, nothing more.......2002-12-13
This book would be best read with David Graff's "Medieval Chinese Warfare", which has much better coverage but not the colour plates. Peers' level of analysis on such issues as the Hun-Xiongnu connection and the historical authenticity of the Fei River Battle will not satisfy academic readers, while his cursory approach to the events of the long Han-Tang transition are sufficient only to pique the interest of the layman. His list for further reading is, however, poorly put together and the extensive bibliography in Graff's book is much more helpful. Nonetheless Osprey's colour plates never disappoint, and add much value that the text by itself lacks.
Hmmm..........1999-08-12
Something annoys me about this book, as with many other of Chris Peer's books. I think it is the way he only uses sources available in Britain. I am Chinese, and I'm afraid I don't really respect the few bits of "evidence" that get to the British Museum. Why not Hong Kong or Beijing museum!! Apart from that minor flaw, I think this book is still very good, with convincing though sometimes ugly illustrations backed up with interesting info. Just don't expect any obscure ancient sources to be cited.
Weak on some topics.......1999-06-08
The Men-at-arms Series covers ancient and classical China in five books, all by Chris Peers who is very familiar with the subject. This is the second book of this series. The chapters: Chronology -- The Western Han -- The Eastern Han -- Recruitment -- Organisation -- Weapons -- Defences -- Garrison Life -- The Three Kingdoms and the Ts'in -- The Barbarian Invasions -- Armies of the Invasion Period -- The art of war in the early Imperial Age -- Ten significant battles. The text focuses on telling Chinas military history; it is very weak on topics like weapons or battle tactics. The drawings by Michael Perry are ok. The maps are primitive and not very useful. This book is the sequel to "Ancient Chinese Armies 1500 - 200BC" (MAA218). The next book in the series is "Imperial Chinese Armies 590 - 1260AD" (MAA 295).
Good Pictures and concise information.......1999-03-18
Lets face it there just aren't that many books on Imperial China during the period between 200BC and 589AD that combined good information, pictures and details. Well this book could be considered a coffee table book since it doesn't delve into the period much. However it does provide a good overview of the main events of the time period in China through various short essays, provides a good number of black and white photographs and eight pages of colored prints showing you what the armor probably looked like.
If your interested in the era and the armies of china then this is not a bad way to start. If you wanted stories and battles then you might want to look elsewhere but a true sinophile should have a copy of this on in their library.
Book Description
By AD 589, when Yang Chien established himself at the head of a newly reformed Chinese empire, nearly four centuries had elapsed since the fall of the last great imperial dynasty: the Han. Although Yang's new Sui regime consciously modelled itself on its great predecessor, both China and the world outside had changed. The problem for the Sui and their successors was no longer simply to 'overawe the barbarians', but to deal as equals with other cultures that were just as proud and self-confident as their own. Chris Peers examines the imperial armies of China from 590-1260 AD, covering their history, organisation and tactics.
