Not only are California's courtyard neighborhoods thoroughly documented, but Polyzoides et al thoroughly explain this housing typology, its evolution, and its finer points.

Whether you have a casual interest in California history, or a need for deep professional understanding of the architecture, I think you will be delighted by this book.

I should also mention that Stefanos Polyzoides, one of the authors, has a firm in Pasadena which has recently produced some exceptional courtyard buildings to add to this lineage. (Seven Fountains, in Hollywood, and Mission Meridian in South Pasadena)

This book highlights one of the unique qualities of Los Angeles. Much of L.A. housing has a Mediteranian feel, not surprising given the climate of southern california and the foothills and mountains and the courtyard is a prefect oasis to build this style of house around. This book does a wonderful job of showcasing these beautiful courtyards and the text and the images are very well presented. Reading this book reminds me of why i love Los Angeles so much, I mean even with all of her problems, she can be so serine and beautiful. Highly recommended.

More than stressing a communal vibe, the courtyard buildings covered in Courtyard Housing reflect Hollywood's fascination with fantasy architecture. The sense of palatial Moorish palaces at a smaller scale provide a whimsical escape from the drudgery of everyday urban life, while the climate of Los Angeles and the Mediterranean architecture combine to create a sense of exotic, charming otherworldliness.

The Zwebells's astounding courtyard design, The Grace on Grace and Franklin, is sadly not included in this book, but luckily many fine buildings are.

What a wonderful book!.......2004-08-28

I purchased this because I live in a courtyard building in WeHo, and have long been a fan of the form. The authors make a compelling case for preservation by identifying courtyard housing as an important and valid alternative to the socialist-inspired modernist forms (Corbusier, et al) that were coming up at the time (1920s-1930s). One small caveat, though -- a photo on page 210 identifies an area as between Harper and Hayvenhurst, when in fact the streets seen are Laurel and Hayworth (the Villa de Este is on Laurel, not Harper).

The authors have done a spendid job of assembling the full range of courtyard housing types from the complex atached units of the Andalusia to the arrangement of modest bungelow courts.

The Abrams Encyclopedia of Photography is a fascinating book that traces the beginnings of Photography up to the present Digital age. The photos are very interesting and the explanations of the techniques churns one's creative impulses. The different forms of Photography explored such as fashion, photo journalism, etc. may possibly open up new avenues to the Photographer.

I would recommend this book to those who's hobby is Photography, the professional, and those who just like to increase their knowledge.

After reading this comic, I was pleasently shocked at the balance and purity the writer reflected from his own heart, and the hearts of us all. This is an underground book that is well past due to hit the gut of mainstream comics. It is rare that an artist comes along who portrays the hopes, dreams and fears of us all, in superb comic form... The pure insouciance of the author is written in every line, and drawn in every line...I read this, and have no hesitation comparing the artist to Claremont, Miller, Vasquez, Mack, and Bendis. I LOVE THIS COMIC!!!!

Now, I'm not going to lie and say that I'm a huge comic book reader but a friend of mine gave me this comic to read and I LOVED IT!!! It's written and illustrated by the author and it's FULL of positive messages. It's also full of the author's person brand of humor and that makes Northern's Hemisphere/Yellow a one of a kind comic book.
This is something that the whole family will enjoy reading.

Mark E. Smith's book "Too Fast" is a fascinating personal glimpse into a world seldom seen to an able bodied person. Humorous as well as profound he succeeds in showing the reader life doesn't stop or hang in limbo just because people have become disabled. Human beings exist well beyond their limitations as the author clearly outlines and defines life with limitations, except to him there are no limitations. People have goals that can be attained at any level in life, and that the disabled are as he says multi-dimensional.
The author draws from his own life experiences and his obvious gift of story telling make this book a delight to read. But the most important aspect of this expertly written book is that he has a lesson to learn from. If anyone has ever lost their way, all anyone needs to do is follow his power wheelchair wheel tracks.

Posiblity for Peace Still Exists.......2005-09-09

This book provides a great insight into the quest for peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. The author is an Israeli government insider having been a member of the Knesset and the cabinet. He was involved in the negotiations for peace. He gives an inspiring view of the moderate Israeli fight to create a permanent solution to the 50 years of war.

This book takes a real view to the end of negotiations and the reality of the second intifada. The author holds out for negotiations to begin again and knows that when they do there is no reason to start the peace process again, but should start with the agreements reached in Taba in 2001. Or the posibility exists that negotiations could be based on the authors own personal negotiations that continued beyond Taba, the Geneva Agreement.

After reading this book, I was happy to see that there are both Israelis and Palestinians who have continued to work on hammering out the differences that were left after the end of official negotiations. It gave me a sense that the possiblity for peace can still be a reality.

This is a fascinating study of a previously unexamined area of medieval history. It seeks with some success to reconcile our understanding of the relationship between the aspirational and idealistic world of chivalry with the pragmatic and at some times brutal world of medieval Europe. Focusing in particular on the order of the Garter during the later Middle Ages, it discusses how the politic functions of the order operated within a structure of ideals that embraced the highest aspirations of the chivalric ethos. All in all an inspired work of scholarship.
