Customer Reviews:
Phenomenal resource.......2002-05-02
I am a public owner and find this book to be one of the most complete and easy to understand discussions of the design-build process that I have seen. Beard, Loulakis and Wundram are well-known industry experts and all active in the Design-Build Institute of America. They bring their years of practical experience to their writings and have a strong sense of reality. I particularly found the contract and liability chapters written by Loulakis to be very helpful. I also enjoy the other books written by Loulakis, particularly "Design-Build Lessons Learned," (2001 Edition), which has the most up-to-date analysis of design-build caselaw and is a great resource to keep up to date with this subject. I'm anxiously awaiting to see if the authors decide to come out with another book in the near future. Keep up the good work, gentlemen!
An excelent guide for design-builders.......2001-06-01
Design-Build: Planning through Development covers most aspects of this project delivery method and is an excellent source of information for all the parties involved in the design and construcion business. Owners, Contractors, CMs and Designers can benefit from this book by obtaining guidelines and good orientation of how and when implement D-B as an effective project delivery method that is getting more followers everywhere.

Book Description
This book is aimed at both the newcomer to monochrome photography and to the more experienced printer who wants to produce fine images using traditional and current printing techniques.
The authors begin by explaining various methods to produce a perfect negative before going on to describe some of the many beautiful and varied processes, that were developed and used during the last century, but still have enormous relevance to today's monochrome photographer. They examine the different methods of using light sensitive material, including the earliest photographic processes, and many other traditional techniques such as gum bichromate, which are gaining favor with many contemporary photographers. They also explain new innovations in film and paper technology including split-toning and split-grading on variable contrast papers.
Some of the subjects discussed: Negative, fine black & white print, liquid photographic emulsions, toning and split-toning, alternative printing processes, salt printing, cyanotype process, kallitype process, argyrotype process, platinum/palladium printing, gum bichromate process, hand tinting, printing out papers, airbrushing, lith printing.
Also Recommended: "The Complete Photographer: Completely Revised Edition."

Four and a half stars.......2005-09-26
Beautiful images throughout this book. Good information, but more of a fine art "look at" book than an actual manual to work and learn from.
All in all - a nice book to won.
Usefull if you like decadence style.......2003-07-09
Some nice decadence images and techniques.
a well guided tour through printing techniques.......2000-04-07
You will learn about the basics and much more. Illustrations in this book are well printed and will make you feel what the authors are writing about. The reader is guided through how to produce a printable B&W negative, how to make a high quality B&W print, how to use liquid photographic emulsions and how to tone and split tone your prints. Furthermore, so-called alternative printing processes and the latest forms of them are introduced in a way easy to understand. Mike Ware's new Kallitype process (argyrotype) and his new cyanotype process are introduced to your benefit. There is a fascinating chapter about contact printing with printing out papers including an introduction to using modern B&W papers as printing out papers even if they were not made for such purpose. Lith Printing is explained duly to allow your entre. The three things that I really liked are the following: 1) two-bath development was explained thoroughly and clearly, 2) the usage of several toners (i.e. split toning) was described clearly, and 3) the illustrations were chosen and printed so well that subjects such as contrast change and tone variations became visible experiences supporting the text (Wittgenstein has said:"Some things cannot be explained; they have to be shown"). - There is a book which came to mind when I read "Beyond Monocrome". The book is Randall Webb's and Martin Reed's "Spirits of Salts, a working guide to old photographic processes" by Argentum ISBN 1-902538-05-6. Spirits of Saults complements Beyond Monochrome well when you want to get into alternative processes. If you first read Beyond Monochrome, it will allow you to dive deeper and deeper in the alternative processes by continuing with Spirits of Salts. - Both Tony Worobiec and Ray Spence have experience as teachers. Their expression is clear and they have an ability to focus on the important. - A splendid book that will carry you far.

Book Description
First published in 1985, Chester Liebs' Main Street to Miracle Mile established the twentieth-century roadside landscape as a subject for serious study. Liebs traces the transformation of commercial development as it has moved from centralized main streets, out along the street car lines, to form the "miracle miles" and shopping malls of today. He also explores the evolution of roadside buildings, from supermarkets and motels to automobile showrooms and drive-in theaters. Both an historical survey and invaluable guide for reading highway landscapes, this classic work--which has inspired numerous studies, museum exhibits, and preservation efforts--is now back in print with new commentary by the author.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent social history of American cities in 20th century........1998-07-16
"Main Street to Miracle Mile" is an excellent introduction to the development of American cities in this century. What's more, it takes what could be a dull topic and makes it lively by looking at such structures as gas stations, motels, and shopping centers and showing how the changes in the architecture of these businesses reflect the changes that were taking place in American society. Good photographs from many parts of America illustrate the impact a more mobile population has had on the location, size, and design of the buildings that serve us. While this book has been used as a text for college classes, it also can be very enjoyable for the casual reader.

Book Description
One of the most respected and honored historians of the media, Erik Barnouw has been called a major national resource by The Nation. Norman Corwin dubbed him America’s Gibbon. He is the writer, says critic John Leonard, “from whom the rest of us steal instead of doing our research.” Media history is his subject, and, as this memoir makes so delightfully clear, it has also been Erik Barnouw’s life. Barnouw’s story, told with wit and charm in Media Marathon, is the story of American culture adjusting to the twentieth century, of new media repeatedly displacing the old in a century-long competitive upheaval.
Born in Holland in 1908 and an immigrant to the United States at the age of eleven, Barnouw spent his early working years in an astounding array of occupations—actor and stage manager, lyricist, translator, director, producer, teacher, and union official. This varied background, described here in rich detail, informs his writings about the world in which he moved, specifically regarding the shifting channels of twentieth-century mass communication. Telling his story through a series of personal profiles of the famous, the infamous, and the little known but powerfully influential, Barnouw recounts the events that took him from the vaudeville stage to the Library of Congress, where he became the first chief of its newly formed Motion Picture, Broadcasting, and Recording Sound Division. Thornton Wilder, Pearl S. Buck, Joshua Logan, Dwight Eisenhower, Lynn Fontanne, Tallulah Bankhead, and Akira Iwasaki—these are among the featured characters in the drama of American media, rendered here in striking close-ups.
From The Hague to retirement in Vermont, with stops in India, Japan, and Russia, Barnouw’s remarkable story gives readers the chance to relive crucial chapters of modern media history—and to relive them with one of that history’s masters as an incomparable guide. A book for those interested in the “mass media,” its evolution, and role in society, Media Marathon will appeal to students, scholars, and general readers alike.

Reader from Israel.......2003-12-28
An excellent book, and to think that if I had never lived in Duluth I would have missed out on such a great author. He reminded me of Bill Bryson in a way, another one of my favorites!
Review for Cold Comfort.......2002-12-02
Barton Sutter is an amazing writer. He uses his creativeness to express his feelings about the beautiful city of Duluth. Not only did I enjoy "Cold Comfort," but I enjoyed learning more about Barton Sutter. He seems to be a brilliant man with a lot of positive energy. The book highlights points of Duluth and Lake Superior that I've never heard of before or considered. I'm new to the city of Duluth; during my winter break, I'm going to take some time to visit the places that Sutter talked about in "Cold Comfort." He really inspired me about the city of Duluth and I look forward to getting to know the city better!
Great Book!.......2001-12-13
I was lucky enough to have Barton Sutter as an English Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Superior and he read some of this book in our freshman english compostion class. The book gives you a sense of the Duluth/Superior area. Sutter is a great author and he comes highly recommended for english classes in Superior. So if you are looking for a book at that area..get this book!
Really Good Cold.......2001-09-19
I attended college at what was then called Wisconsin State University-Superior in the late sixties. I was from Philadelphia and I quickly got into this college to avoid the draft. So did many eastern draftable men. Imagine my surprise when I landed at Duluth Airport in January and stepped into a sheet of frozen air that made the hairs in my nose stiffen like pins.
Barton Sutter describes Duluth and Superior exactly the way people live there. Yes, people live there and they are nice people, but as Sutter shows, they ain't like you and me. They live in snow drifts nine months of the year.
Then there's Lake Superior or as Barton describes it, GOD. The lake is an ocean and it's everywhere. Barton describes fishing, hiking ,canoeing, and reading maps for a hobby. Somewhere in those dark winters he gets a divorce, is involved with a suprisingly active art community, and then gets married again. The prose is perfect. The description of rugged Minnesota and Wisconsin is terrific. Forget Vanity Fair and the New Yorker. Experience ice fishing at thirty below.
Like driving up I-35 to Lake Superior..........2000-05-09
Sutter describes the attitude of the Duluthians dead-on, proud of the climate and the effect it has on the citizens, and the in-your-face weather and power of the lake.
The stories are sprinkled with dry Scandanavian humor. He passes through the seasons and reflections of his life with the clear, harsh beauty of the city and the Lake.
Reminds of the depressing joy of a bright, clear -20F Februrary morning. You'd know what I mean if you lived here...and if you dont? Let Barton Sutter fill you in!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent uplifting book!!!.......2001-04-12
As a woman who waited until her 30's to start having children, I found this book very uplifting, it satisfied alot of my fears of waiting to get pregnant, and what to expect if you are having trouble conceiving, and alternative methods of fertility therapy. I give this book two thumbs up, it was very helpful to me.
This book is NOT about Choices, Decisions, Options.......2000-04-22
The title of this book led me to believe that the book would focus mostly on the pre-conception aspects of motherhood after 35. This was not the case. Four out of six chapters focused on pregnancy, childbirth, and caring for a new baby. I was disappointed in this book for several other reasons as well. The two chapters that did deal with the actual decision to become pregnant and the alternatives available were poorly written and insensitive to women like myself who are having difficulty conceiving due to age. I thought this book would offer me some insight into the biological and emotional aspects of trying to become a mother after the age of 35. I found the medical facts to be out of date and pregnancy options not thorougly explored (for example, there were only 2 pages on donor egg and one paragraph on adoption). In addition, the book seemed to be written from the perspective that anyone can get pregnant easily, whether they want to or not. There were many stories in the first chapter of women in their later years who found out they were accidentally pregnant, or suddenly found themselves pregnant and were happy because they suddenly felt "older" and "grownup." This is a severe injustice to women who sincerely desire to become a mother, but are having difficulty. I would not recommend this book to anyone--even those women who have easily conceived.

Book Description
Based on a series of fascinating What ifs" posed by leading military historians, this intriguing new alternate history reconstructs moments during the American Civil War which could conceivably have altered the entire course of the war and led to a Confederate victory. Commencing with real battles, actions and characters, each scenario has been carefully constructed to reveal how at points of decision a different choice or minor incident could have set in motion an entirely new train of events altering history forever. What if Sherman was stalled outside Atlanta, and Lincoln lost the crucial 1864 election? Or if Stuart's Cavalry at Gettysburg arrived in time to give Lee the freedom of operation he lacked in reality? These and many more convincing scenarios are played out against the dramatic and colorful backdrop of this critical and bloody era of American history.

Civil War in General.......2007-05-09
I have been a buff of the american civil war and I like to have alwasy like to read stories of what might have been. Stories like this rate up there Harry Turtledove`s stories on it and Newt Gringrich`s so if I ever find stories on it I try to buy them. Bruce
Thought-provoking alternative history.......2004-09-03
I recently asked a friend of mine, another Civil War buff (and a Southerner of Confederate heritage, like myself), if he had read this book. No, he allowed, he'd heard of it but was turned off by the prospect of reading something that celebrated secession and the defense of slavery that we both see as having been the core values of the Confederacy.
That sensibility is understandable, but if you are reticent about buying or reading some Southern nationalist fantasy that presents Confederate victory and independence as the desirable outcome of the Civil War, you need not fear "Dixie Victorious." At least one of the ten contributors (Wade G. Dudley) states bluntly that one should be thankful his scenario of Confederate triumph did not come to pass. "[Confederate] victory would have meant the continuation of the institution of slavery, an institution that the South would not have willingly abandoned for generations (if at all)." On the other hand, contributor Kevin F. Kiley projects Virginia's abolition of slavery in 1870 and the Confederacy's total abandonment of the "peculiar institution" by 1900, following the fictional death of Lincoln and the electoral defeat of the Republican administration in 1864. And Tsouras himself portrays a drastic transformation of Southern (and Northern) race relations following a Southern victory brought about in large part by the Confederacy's (fictional) decision in 1864 to enlist black combat troops into its armies. (That official decision actually was made less than a month before Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, far too late to affect the overall outcome of the war.) But there is no overall sense in this collection that a Confederate victory would have been for the best.
Mostly, the contributors to "Dixie Victorious" concentrate on the military impacts of some relatively small changes in the historical record - e.g., the immediate presence of Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston's personal physician at the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862 saves the general from bleeding to death (as he actually did, because no one was around to put a tourniquet on his leg wound). James R. Arnold conjectures that Johnston's survival at Shiloh enabled him to lead the (fictionalized) campaign that saved Vicksburg for the Confederacy a year later. David M. Keithly and Michael R. Hathaway both offer counterfactual outcomes of Lee's 1862 invasion of Maryland (that actually ended with a nominal Union victory at Antietam) that lead to Confederate victory in the war. Among the most interesting scenarios are Dudley's depiction of the triumph of Rebel ironclads over the Union blockade in the spring of 1862 and Cyril M. Lagvanec's fictionalized account of the 1864 Red River campaign in Louisiana. The latter was in fact a Union fiasco, but Lagvanec argues that a few little twists could have made this often-ignored event the turning point of the war and a key to Confederate victory.
The contributors also are allowed to have some fun. Each historian presents an authentic bibliography, but the endnotes for most chapters are a mixture of actual sources and some provocatively fanciful ones ("From Manassas to Manila Bay: The Campaigns of James Ewell Brown Stuart").
The real purpose of such conjectures, as Tsouras points out, is to emphasize just how close the Confederacy came to winning the war -- how a relatively minor incident (e.g., Lee's actual injury just prior to the Maryland invasion in 1862) might have had major consequences. (MacKinlay Kantor posited just two alterations of fact to change the course of history in "If the South Had Won the Civil War," which presents a more thorough projection of the aftermath of Confederate victory.) For those who are already familiar with the actual military and political courses of the Civil War, "Dixie Victorious" is not just an amusement. The book illuminates the issues of these Civil War campaigns and encourages new ways of viewing them. It's well worth your time.
Ten provocative alternative histories where the South wins.......2004-06-09
"Dixie Victorious: An Alternative History of the Civil War" is a collection of ten essays imagining how the South could have won the Civil War edited by Peter G. Tsouras, author of several alternative histories including "Gettysburg: An Alternative History." The title, of course, spoils the outcome off all of the essays, but then the appeal here is more argumentative than narrative and the question is whether each author can make a compelling case that tips the delicate balance between military success and failure the other way:
Andrew Uffindell, "'Hell on Earth': Anglo-French Intervention in the Civil War," has the "Trent" incident resulting in Great Britain declaring war against the Union and France following suit. Uffindell comes up with additional reasons for the two nations to fight the war that neither wanted in 1861 to force the North into fighting a war on all fronts.
Wade G. Dudley, "Ships of Iron and Wills of Steel: The Confederate Navy Triumphant," has Confederate Secretary of the Navy Stephen R. Mallory creating an ironclad navy. Consequently, when the "Monitor" shows up at Hampton Roads it faces not one Confederate ironclad but three and the historical stalemate becomes a decisive Rebel victory.
David M. Keithly, "'What Will the Country Say?': Maryland Destiny," turns Special Order No. 191, which fell into McClellan's hands before the Battle of Antietam, into a "ruse de guerre" as Lee baits a trap to destroy the Army of the Potomac. This one is an interesting twist on history and yet another opportunity to show Lee as being clever and McClellan incompetent, which is almost always fun.
Michael R. Hathaway, "When the Bottom Fell Out: The Crisis of 1862," revisits Lee's first invasion of the North and has the Confederate general avoiding hurting himself when he was thrown by his horse the day after the second battle of Manassas. Overall I tend to like the essays where the key change is rather simple, which is what Hathaway does by having Lee free from pain and clear headed during his first invasion of the North.
James R. Arnold, "'We Will Water our Horses in the Mississippi': A.S. Johnston vs. U.S. Grant," has Albert Sidney Johnston's life being saved by a tourniquet at the Battle of Shiloh. The South still loses on the second day, but Jefferson Davis is able to put Johnston back in command of Confederate forces in the West during the siege of Vicksburg. Clearly the idea here is insert Johnston back into the war in the western theater at the point where Davis most felt his loss, which explains why Shiloh remains a Confederate defeat.
Edward G. Longacre, "'Absolutely Essential to Victory': Stuart's Calvary in the Gettysburg-Pipe Creek Campaigns," has the Confederate cavalry keeping in contact with Lee during the second invasion of the North. The Battle of Pipe Creek replaces that of the historical Battle of Gettysburg. Those who have read the alternative history "Gettysburg" by Newt Gingrich and William R. Fortschen will find this essay of more than passing interest since it shares the belief that there was a Confederate victory to be had in Lee's second invasion of the North, but not at Gettysburg itself.
John D. Burtt, "Moves to Great Advantage: Longstreet vs. Grant in the West," finds Braxton Bragg being wounded and James Longstreet taking command of the Army of Tennessee and fighting Grant. Longstreet had agreed to go west so that he could have an independent command, and Burtt's essay argues out a best case scenario for what he could have accomplished, although his aggressiveness might strike many as being beyond his nature.
Peter G. Tsouras, "Confederate Black and Gray: A Revolution in the Minds of Men," has Jefferson Davis seizing the opportunity afforded by Major General Pat Cleburne's Manifesto to give the South's slaves an opportunity to earn their freedom by fighting for the Confederacy. This one has the advantage of taking actions the Confederacy was eventually compelled to do, and moving them forward to a time when it might have actually helped the Southern cause.
Cyril M. Lagvanec, "Decision in the West: Turning Point in the Trans-Mississippi Confederacy," has Kirby Smith taking back Arkansas and Missouri in 1864, as David Dixon Porter's Mississippi Squadron falls victim to its commander's greed for captured cotton. I had the most problems with this scenario because I am not inclined to think that the Union would have reduced its overwhelming number advantages in Virginia and Tennessee-Georgia to make up for setbacks in Louisiana, thereby setting up a domino of effects.
Kevin F. Kiley, "Terrible as an Army with Banners: Jubal Early in the Shenandoah Valley," basically has Phil Sheridan's ride failing to reverse the Union's fortunes after Early's attack in the Valley. Kiley also finds an opportunity to remove a major obstacle to a Southern victory with a single bullet, which I have to admit was a card I thought would be played more often in these essays.
In most of these essays the Confederacy does not win the war militarily, but rather a pivotal military victory (or combination of victories) tips the delicate balance and gives the South a political victory (e.g., McClellan defeats Lincoln in the 1864 election). All of these essays are presented as the work of military historians in an alternative reality. Each has footnotes documenting sources, with those from fictional sources noted with an * (Lagvanec is the farthest over the rainbow with all of his notes for his Trans-Mississippi essay having asterisks).
Readers will know exactly what they are getting with "Dixie Victorious," so those who are offended by "What If" stories in general and those in which the South wins the Civil War in particular can stay far away. The idea here is to be provocative and to come up with diverse scenarios for this to happen, and in that regard this collection is successful. Students of the Civil War will find a lot to argue about in these pages.

Book Description
The Indian Reorganization Act (IRA) of 1934 has been generally acknowledged as the most important statute affecting Native Americans after the General Allotment Act of 1887, and it is probably the most important single statute affecting Native Americans during the two-thirds of a century since its passage. Over half the Native governments in the contemporary U.S. are organized under its provisions or under separate statutes that parallel the IRA in major ways.
Although the impact of the IRA has been widely studied and debated, no scholar until now has looked closely at the forces that shaped its creation and passage. Author Elmer Rusco spent over a decade of research in national and regional archives and other repositories to examine the legislative intent of the IRA, including the role of issues like the nature and significance of judge-made Indian law; the allotment policy and its relation to Indian self-government; the nature of Native American governments before the IRA; the views and actions of John Collier, commissioner of Indian Affairs and leader in the campaign to reform the nation's Indian policy; and the influence of relations between the president and Congress during the second year of the New Deal. Rusco also discusses the role of conflicting ideologies and interests in this effort to expand the rights of Native Americans; the general ignorance of Native American concerns and policy on the part of legislators engaged in the writing and passage of the law; and the limited but crucial impact of Indian involvement in the struggle over the IRA.
This is a magisterial study, based on meticulous research and thoughtful analysis, that will stand as a major contribution to the study of Native American life in the twentieth century. Whatever the lasting impact of the IRA, this brilliant study of the "fateful time" leading to its creation will endure as the definitive discussion of the origins of that landmark law.
