Kenny Rogers the PHOTOGRAPHER.......2000-06-05
Kenny is well known as a singer. His photography surpasses his singing/acting. This book contains portraits of actors and singers in B&W and color photographed on 8x10" negatives giving the best results possiable. As a photographer myself, I can truly say kenny has mastered portrait lighting and is able to bring out the true person in his photos instead of a posed subject. This book should be in photography sections for the quality matches that of Ansel Adams and John Sexton. I would recommend this to anyone into photographic lighting/posing or famous actors.

As a complete novice to accounting concepts I bought this book because I wanted to understand what type of information I need to track as a freelance professional services provider. I read all of Part 1 (several chapters) and can't say I know more than I did when I started. If you want to understand the difference between cash & accrual methods, the reason for single or double entry, the purpose of income statements, or how bookkeeping can help you as a management tool, look around at some other books before buying this sight unseen.

This book really helped me set up my books properly. I had really made a mess of them up until now. It also teaches me the lingo of accounting so I don't feel like such an idiot talking to my accountant!

Choices in Deafness.......2003-07-03
As a mom with a one year old newly diagnosed as severely deaf, I found this book very helpful. After going online and learning of all the controversy surrounding deaf issues,it was refreshing to find a book that gave equal time to differing views. This book led me to making the choice that is right for our child and our family. I loved that it gave professional veiwpoints for each language-learning option, as well as the story of a family that chose each of the various options.

Choices In Deafness.......2001-04-11
This is a great book!!
After our child was diagnosed with deafness, we were overwelmed with so much information, so many decisions to make. This book offers a nonbiased, comprehensive outline of the educational options available for deaf children. I use it as a reference manual and read it three or four times after my son's diagnosis. We're four years down the road now and I'm going to read it again. There is a wealth of information here. It is the first book I recommend parents read after finding out their child is deaf.
Excellent Book.......2000-07-27
I'm one of the people who was published in this book, under the Cued Speech section, and I did add a supplement to it. I think this book is a MUST read by any new parent of a deaf child. It presents a clear, un-biased outline of all options available for your child, (although I'm biased and believe that the Cued Speech option is a no-brainer. :-) but its still a excellent book and well-written and edited. Kudos to Sue Schwartz!
Objective, accurate, readable, thank you, Susan Schwartz!.......2000-04-27
Second only to Paul Ogden's "Silent Garden" (which treats of a broader range of issues than does "Choices") this is the most balanced and readable book specifically dealing with deaf education and communications options that we (hearing parents of profoundly deaf toddler) have yet found. There is a very good mix of professional articles and actual parental stories, recently supplemented by updates from the children themselves, now mostly grown. This is the only book of its kind that we have seen that provides actual audiograms for most stundets/subjects, something hearing parents MUST have in order to relate the stories in "Choices" to THEIR kids' situation. (I only wish AIDED audiograms had been consistently included as well, since those are nearly as important as basic audiograms.) I dont suggest tinkering with success, but I do think somewhat more information on the failure rates for given options should have been given, since it is far too easy for us as parents to imagine OUR child as being the succesful student portrayed in each section, thus short-chaging the down-side risks of each option. Also, it might have been nice if a few more stories of deaf people who DIDNT live in Maryland at some point in their life could have been included. That's hardly a real criticsm, though, and I conclude by this book highly.

The good news that most of the media deems not fit to print.......2007-02-05
Hirsh has written a lot of books about the military, some better than others, but this book has a lot of interesting personal stories about brave men on very dangerous missions in places where the fight against the Islamists have taken the best and the brightest that the USA has to offer.
Hirsh's writing is not necessarily the best, but at least he doesn't get in the way of the story, and accurately depicts the dedication of America's men of the pararescue jumpers "PJ's" units who serve "that others might live."
Unlike the character assassins now serving in the US Senate who tasted a couple skirmishes of combat and ran away as fast as they could fake enough Purple Hearts to leave after a couple of months, these men fight year after year, trying to take the war to the enemy that hates the West and all it stands for.
This isn't a great book, but the subject matter is something that seldom sees any ink or airtime, with the possible exception of Fox.
If you don't know anything about PJ's or their mission, you can do worse than reading this book.
Enthralling.......2006-01-26
An excellent book. Even as an English major, I very rarely have found myself so unwilling to put down a book. An unexpected surprise was that Hirsh encompassed the entire rescue team, writing not only of the PJs, but also of the pilots, crew, combat controllers, and commanders. If you have little interest or experience with the military, you may find the technical aspects a bit heavy at times, but I personally had no difficulty; truly, I appreciated the detail and immersion in the subject matter. Thrilling. Enthralling. Delightful.

I found Michael Hirsh's writing style very entertaining. You, the reader, must realize the rare privilege it is to have before you an account so accurate in factual detail of what embodies a USAF pararescueman. Having the honor of being a PJ from Sep84-Dec92 I have witnessed alot so life doesn't suprise me much anymore. The effect this book had on me was suprising. Many times while reading this book I paused to shake off cold shivers or to loosen my white-knuckle grip for I felt I was right there among these supermen doing the almost impossible...living life as a PJ! One thing I did not like was the lack of respect Michael Hirsh showed toward the special operations people from the other military branches. I have had the privilege and honor to work with many fine spec op folks from the other branches of our military. Even though there is the traditional and expected "ribbing" that goes on between us highly-trained experts I have forged lasting friendships with many of these spec op guys. Michael Hirsh, you wrote a great book about pararescuemen. You even made us PJ's feel uneasy (which is hard to do) by giving us a pat on the back for doing our jobs albeit appreciated. In your writing please do not convey the false idea that PJ's are so much better than all other special operations people. Special operations/forces of the navy, army, marines and air force all have outstanding people expertly trained for a specific purpose. However, I will state that when your day has gone bad putting your money on a PJ is a better bet than on one of them SEALs.
Not such a great book about great individuals.......2005-06-07
I found Hirsh's writing style choppy and at times the transitions between chapters and topics were confusing. Overall None Braver was a poor presentation of material that could have been informative and entertaining--which it was only slightly of both. I recommend you read something else on PJs. They deserve better.
Educational.......2004-08-10
My son was recently accepted into the Pararescue Program. I was immediately attracted to any information I could get my hands on so I could educate myself. This book was very informative, interesting, rivoting. I was compelled to read until I reached the back cover. I also enjoyed Pararescue by the same author. Another good book is "That Others May Live" by Jack Brehm. I pray daily for these heroes and their commanders.

There is intense public interest in the role of universities as a source of science-based innovations. To increase our understanding of this role, this book compares the economic effects of university research in the United States and Japan--countries similar in economic and technological capabilities but different in culture, tradition, and institutional structure. Incorporating historical, sociological, and industrial perspectives, the book discusses both the mechanics of university-industry interactions and how policies encouraging such interactions can address regional and national needs.
Some of the results of this comparative study are surprising. For example, contrary to common assumptions, collaboration between individual faculty members and colleagues in industry appears to be as high in Japan as it is in the United States. It also becomes clear that it is the pace of technological change, more than government incentives, that puts universities in the position of driving the most exciting areas of business growth. Finally, although universities are vital to the networks that lead to innovation-based growth, experience in both Japan and the United States suggests that policies aimed at transforming economically depressed areas through the promotion of university-based ventures are difficult to implement when the environment for economic transformation is weak.
