Oil Painting At It's Best.......2005-03-12

This book shows how well oil paint can be manipulated into so many styles of painting. The artists in this book are true masters of their craft. Just seeing the pictures give such inspiration to the viewer. Kudos to Steve Doherty for doing such a well put together book.

the subtitle of this book "how to locate and photograph the artistic model" is accurate as the book contains a lot of very useful info as such - but this book is so much more as a superb collection of nude woman in artistic poses for artistic reference and study - unlike most books of this type there are no wasted photos here - every photo used in this book is a work of art and valuable for artists like myself - this book contains no porn or tastless images at all - the most tasteful book of artistic poses i have seen

my copy, being nearly 40 years old the color photos are loosing their color but yet it gives the images a beautiful vintage look - most photos are shot in the rocky mountains of colorado and the scenery alone is worth buying the book - the studio shots are sepia toned and have plenty of contrast to easily see the form of the models for artistic reference - the photographer of these images is very skilled and able to capture the models in relaxed and natural poses that look like the models were having fun with the shoots

this book was made during the sixties and the era of the hippies in colorado - the easy going and free feel of the time is reflected in this book but it doesnt look "hippyish" - the images and art are timeless

i recommend this book without any hesitation for for the figurative artist needing good ref material (specially good for fantasy art) and for anyone wanting info on finding and photographing models

There are better, smarter, things out there to spend your money on........2006-07-20

Jim Mafood is a youthful cartoonist. Not really an artist in the common understanding of what a comic book artist is. After now having read four of his books, I suspect this is by his own choice. The truth of this assessment is revealed in his immature, herky-jerky story-telling (i.e., panel-to-panel continuity - or lack thereof, actually). If you are under 22 years old you may appreciate his lack of skill in story-telling and his do-whatever-feels-right drawing approach, as well as his muddled story threads, for the sake of youthful energy and a foray into youth culture (whatever the heck THAT is - most likely an oxymoron). But if you are over 22 years old you will (or you SHOULD) find yourself bored with his youth-culture myopia and his constant unctuous injections of his ill-thought through political and social commentary into his already mired dialog and plotting. All things considered, avoid this book. There are better, smarter, things out there to spend your money on.

Tries Way Too Hard and Yet Not Hard Enough.......2006-02-15

After finishing this, I read Mahfood's bio at the back, and when I saw he went on to work on Clerks series, it all made perfect sense. Perfect sense because this is the ultimate book for indie comic guys -- sweet art, but totally juvenile. Juvenile because the characters are mere fantasy constructs and the story is little more than an anti-corporate screed. The titular heroic trio are a kind of like the Spice Girls of "Freak City": one black, one Asian, one Latina (although they all tend to look pretty Anglo), and all dead sexy. These are hot, tattooed, comic book geek pot/shroom heads, who also happen to be into cool music, cool films, grafitti, and walking around strapped. Friends since childhood, they now live in a group house plastered with posters (Run DMC, Peter Tosh, Tribe Called Quest, The Specials, Fishbone, James Brown, etc.), and littered with bongs, skateboards, zines, and movies (Akira, Hard-Boiled, etc.). They makes their living as drug dealers (apparently strictly of weed and mushrooms), and live a happy go lucky life.

That is, until their success on the street catches the attention of Nykee Corp. CEO Phillip and his secret Brotherhood of the Cracker. This is Mahfood's attempt at...what? Satire? Stickin' it to The Man? Whatever it is, it's heavy handed and lame. Just to spell it out, Nykee = Nike and Phillip = Phil Knight (CEO of Nike). So, yes, Nike, I mean Nykee, is the most evilest company ever in the history of the world and the Grrls' little hand-to-hand dealing is such a threat to their monopoly on Freak City's drug trade that a team of assassins is sent after them. (Plussing as which, their multiracial background is apparently a threat to the Brotherhood.) That's about the gist of it, there is a little more backstory, but it's basically an extended showdown, with lots of action sprinkled in. I'm probably right on board with Mahfood in terms of supporting indies and the general ill effects of global capitalism -- which is why it's so disappointing to see him write such a simple, boring take on it. It's an approach that panders to a knee-jerk audience and doesn't require any kind of actual engagement or thought. The notion that these three dope dealers become system-smashing anti-corporate revolutionaries is totally pathetic, and the idea that drugs are somehow against the mainstream is so tired and lame.

Fortunately, the art is definitely a lot of fun, with a lot of quasi and overt grafitti influences. One kind of annoying element, however, is the tendancy to cram in tons of music and comics references on various t-shirts. Sometimes, a characters's t-shirt slogan will change multiple times in a single scene. Similarly, the writing tries really hard to be "cool", and only succeds in sounding very forced. The threesome all talk exactly the same, and there's far too much hip-hop lingo tossed around. The effect is rather like standing near a bunch of 15-year-old suburban white boys who are deep in wigger mode. There's just far too much use of pop culture references as substitutes for an engaging story. I mean, I grew up around the same time and I like almost all the same music -- I saw Fishbone in '87 and Akira in '88, and all that good stuff -- but so what? This is a book that's fun to skim through, but lame to actually read. Next time, more substance with all the style.

Amazing artwork!.......2002-10-25

This is one of my all-time favorite comics. The story is so-so, but it doesn't matter. The art is amazing and the fact that the protagonists are a bunch of ... hip hop girls dealing ... in the city make up for it. I just wish he'd do a sequel. Highly recommended!

Good style, Not so good writing.......2001-09-05

I love this book. I bought it after seeing Jim Mahfood's work in the "Clerks" comic, and this did not disappoint. If you like comics, or aspire to write them, this is a good buy. The story lags in some parts, mainly in some of the dialogue (it seems like he's occasionally trying too hard to make drug references or use slang), but that isn't why I bought the book, nor is it the reason why I love the book. The style is awesome! I found myself getting very into the action of the book, just because of how it was all presented. The story is pretty cheesy, but BUY THIS BOOK. I like the pretty pictures.

Read This Book.......2004-05-01

I am not sure what book the previous person read, but it wasn't this one!!

Not only do they give you IRS documents and forms, but explains them line by line in real peoples language. Citing court cases and explains what to do and not do to get the best out of each line and every form.

File however you want, but this baby sits on my desk and is used to reference when I need to know how to get the best deduction or the legal view on a purchase, debit, sale or credit.

Not bad since the IRS basically wrote it.......2004-02-02

This book is simply a compilation of the IRS publications found at www.irs.gov. I mean they didn't even change the wording one bit. Look at education credits then go download Publication 970 from the IRS' website. It is verbatim.

The only real reason to get this book is if you don't want to go get it from the IRS website. I give it 3 stars since it does provide an easier layout than searching the IRS website, but it really doesn't provide it in an easy to understand language so non tax professionals can truly understand what is going on.

Annual Favorite.......2004-01-29

This continues to be my annual favorite. Although I now do my taxes electronically, I still get a "real" guide as both a reference and tutorial. It also makes for an easy way to see the big changes for the year. This guide has all kinds of information with very good detail and examples. The printing is easy to read and the quality is good. I have not found anything better in the competition ... yet.

Soldiers in Normandy - The british.......2006-04-05

Overall a good book having many pictures of British fighting men and their weapons and equipment. I did question the Commando armed with a No 1 Mk III Service Rifle - at the time of Normandy the No 4 rifle was standard issue for all troops. A minor point.
However I feel the introduction was a bit negative regarding the effectiveness of the British Army. Granted Britain was a maritime nation, and the pre-war development of the army was impacted by the philosophy that Britain would not fight another continental war. However as the war unfolded they did develop a very well armed and effective fighting force. At the time of D-Day the effectiveness of the army army was impacted by a heavy loss of troops killed in action and the destruction of Britain's industrial base. However the troops who landed in Normandy were well trained and equipped. I fail to see the truth in the authors comment that " they fought less well than the average American unit". Some of these British soldiers had fought from Dunkirk and thought Africa and fought well in France. The training new troops received in Britain was as good as the training the green American troops received stateside and in Britain. The British Army was not perfect it did sometimes lack the aggressiveness of the other armies but this was the result of dwindling manpower and continuous action from 1939.
A good reference book but the introduction paints a poor picture of the british fighting man.

Foundation for Study of the Iroquois League.......1999-11-23

I read this book for my Classic Ethnographies seminar at school. It is by far one of the most interesting ethnographies I have had the pleasure of reading. It combines ethnography with history and gives the reader a good overall view of the Iroquois. I can't recommend this book enough. If you only read one book on the Iroquois, this should be that book!
