Book Description
A Discourse by Three Drunkards on Government takes the form of a debate between a spokesman for Western ideals of democracy and progress, and an advocate for adherence to traditional samurai values. Their discussion is moderated by the imperturbable Master Nankai, who loves nothing more than to drink and argue politics. The fiction of the drinking bout allowed Chomin to debate freely topical political issues, in a discussion that offers an astute analysis of contemporary European politics and a prophetic vision of Japan's direction. This lucid and precise translation of a delightful work has been designated one of the UNESCO series of classics of world literature.

Okay.......2006-03-23
Again overpriced foreign book. I had to read it for a class. It's interesting but I wonder if the short discourse on politics is worth the money I paid for it. If this is not required for a class I would recommend getting another book.
Brief and revealing.......2003-09-22
This short work, from the end of the 19th century, taught me a lot about Japan's course since then. Two disputants, under blanket amnesty granted by brandy, present supposedly opposing views. The first, in Western clothes, orates at length on democracy, personal freedom, education, world relations, and (of course) national wealth. The second, representing Japanese tradition, argues for military expansionism in order to attain a secure place in international politics and (of course) to attain national wealth.
I say supposed opposition - it seemd to me that the two were really discussing different aspects of the cultural identity. The master, in the end, advises modernization within reason and defensive armament within reason. Although his house set the stage for the other two and his point made the most sense, I found it the least interesting part of the text. The two extremes held my attention much more closely.
In retrospect, we can see that Japan has followed both courses. It armed heavily up to mid 20th century, and has since participated on an even footing with the major Western powers. This book seems have predicted both.
I don't know whether to file this little book closer to Confucius or Johnathan Swift - no matter, I welcome it to my library.
A Pre-war subversive missive which has excellent relevancy.......2001-05-29
The Discourse here is an excellent pre-war subversive missive which will give significant insight to those who wish to understand the underlying internal soul-searching going on in Japan during the period between the arrival of Perry and the Black Ships until the modern soul-searching debate surrounding the essential illegality and absurdity of Article IX in the Japanese Constitution. The title itself should clue in the reader that this is definitely one of those books which like Voltaire and Machiavelli, got the author in quite a bit of trouble with the secret police for being too close to the truth for thier liking. The debate takes on a similar form to the traditional greek diatribes in that it is in the form of a conversation between master and seekers. However, the Discourse here is a conversation between the Master Power Drinker and two drinking buddies; The Lover of the Old and the Lover of the New. After the boys have had a few bottles of sake a piece, and are "full of thier cups" as it were, they are allowed to speak thier minds freely in the Japanese tradition as a Jester is with his cap. Hence, the drinking becomes a token of the true face of each of the debaters and the heated philosophical arguements that always insue after one has had enough to drink as to become loquatious, but not yet enough to slur one's words, yet what is said cannot be held against the speakers the next day as they try to sleep off thier hangovers. Anyone interested in the essential debate for the Japanese soul as Japan moved from a fuedal isolationist society to dreams of empire in complete immitation of the British and United States empires should certainly read this book.

Customer Reviews:
Very detailed and helpful.......2005-10-08
I found this book to be most helpful. The girls are draw realy style, almost like they've been photographed and traced. They have realistic proprotions and look natural. The uniforms are very detailed, with key elements highlighted. There are also segments on shoes, ties, blouse styles and what not that are not part of a particular uniform so you can make your own. I still flip through this one when fishing for random ideas, and something usually pops up.
Costume Reference.......2004-12-04
An excellent collection of costumes from real-life establishments and current clothing trends in Japan. Ozawa has nifty sections detailing all the variations of hats, shoes, aprons, and shirts that you may use to put together your own costume.
Most of the sections had additional details such as type of shirt, uniform length, apron size, and even store policy such as length of hair, jewelry, nail polish, and cosmetic usage in the Restuarant section. More complex costumes such as the kimono and miko, he goes into step-by-step detail on how it goes on, how it's tied, etc.
I find the most vexing part of the book is that dark colored clothes made seeing the lines of the uniform difficult. Some may even view that the current uniforms depicted here will be outmoded in a few years except for the traditional costumes and long-standing restaurant uniforms.
Although the uniforms are mainly from Japan, the uniforms can be transfered to your own region especially considering the costumes of the restaurant tend to be theme and location inspired (French, Italian, American, etc). What's covered:
-Restaurant Uniforms (Well-known establishments)
-Nurse Uniforms (Nurse, Dentist)
-Traditional Japanese Costumes (Kimono, Festival Costume, Miko)
-Office Uniforms
-Exotic Costumes (Chinese, Thailand, Austria)
-Seductive Costumes (Bunnies, Race Queens)
-List of Contributing Establishments
All in all, this book may be used as a reference, not a step-by-step drawing book. All the pages are in color which comes in handy for color references, and shows quite a bit of info regarding Japanese restaurants - acting almost like a travel guide of must-go-to restaurants. No nudity present.
Good for details and coloring, but not drawing..........2003-09-22
This book is full of color pictures of uniforms (maid, restuarant, cat costume, female business dresses, and some "sexy" costumes.
The book shows the uniforms in simulated 3d both on a sample character and clothes only (no sample character in them). It will help you get a feel for the coloring and the details, but it doesn't have any steps for drawing the uniforms pretty much all you see is the final step. So if you want to see finished drawings of a good cross section of female uniforms and some costumes, then this is the book you want.
Admit It, You Know You Love a Girl (or Guy) In Uniform!!!.......2003-08-01
I suspect most aspiring American manga artists are attracted to the medium in part because of the fanciful, out-of-the ordinary costumes that many manga characters wear in fantasy, otherworldly or futuristic environments. But the setting in a good number of manga stories--even those featuring super-powered protagonsists--live in the "real world." It's often a greater challenge for a would-be manga artist to create a contemporary wardrobe for main, supporting, and background characters, than is the task of devising a "cool" costume. And what about service uniforms for restaurant workers, candy-stripers, and the like. Details for such outfits can't be faked or improvised!
"Colorful Costumes" is a wonderful intoduction to the world of service uniforms. In his illustrations, Mr. Ozawa has reproduced the uniforms worn by employees of over a dozen actual restaurants in Japan (of course they were accurate as of the time of the publication of the original Japanese edition of this volume). Ozawa also includes clothing worn in ethnic-themed eateries, roadside snack-stands, and hospitials. He includes a detailed description of each outfit.
All illustrations are in color (hence the higher price), and the models are primarily female, drawn in a near-realistic style. The drawings clearly display the construction of each outfit. Since most of the costumes are made in a Western style, the reader should have no trouble adapting the uniforms for his or her purposes.
You never know when you might need a waitress in a scene, so this book makes a good reference. Of course, you should also observe the many outfits worn by people of different professions in your own community.

Flawed.......2002-09-26
We learn nothing new in this book. The book blames everyone but the actual person who really killed the Meech Lake Accord, i.e. Robert Bourassa. Did anyone oppose Meech before the Quebec premier invoked the notwithstanding clause of the constitution? No. The book also tries to support the myth that he was some kind of political genius; a master strategist. The bottom line? Everything he did blew up in his face. Bill 22? Lost the 1976 election because of it. Bill 178? Meech Lake. The rest of Canada should have just ignored him and gone about its own business. Save your money and buy another book.

A Book Worth Reading, Rereading, and Keeping Nearby.......1999-12-02
This book is for anybody who might encounter tough challenges. In other words, this book is for everybody. In sixteen short and very readable chapters Dietz offers an abundance of practical advice which can transform hopelessness into optimism, sullenness into joy and a defeatist attitude into a willingness to overcome every tough challenge life may present.
Book Description
"These thousands, and tens and twenties of thousands of American young men, badly wounded, all sorts of wounds, operated on, pallid with diarrhea, languishing, dying with fever, pneumonia, &c. open a new world somehow to me, giving closer insights, new things, exploring deeper mines than any
yet, showing our humanity, (I sometimes put myself in fancy in the cot, with typhoid, or under the knife,) tried by terrible, fearfulest tests, probed deepest, the living soul's, the body's tragedies, bursting the petty bounds of art." So wrote Walt Whitman in March of 1863, in a letter telling
friends in New York what he had witnessed in Washington's war hospitals. In this, we see both a description of war's ravages and a major artist's imaginative response to the horrors of war as it "bursts the petty bounds of art."
In "...the real war will never get in the books", Louis Masur has brought together fourteen of the most eloquent and articulate writers of the Civil War period, including such major literary figures as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Frederick Douglass, Herman
Melville, Walt Whitman, Henry Adams, and Louisa May Alcott. Drawing on a wide range of material, including diaries, letters, and essays, Masur captures the reactions of these writers as the war was waged, providing a broad spectrum of views. Emerson, for instance, sees the war "come as a frosty
October, which shall restore intellectual & moral power to these languid & dissipated populations." African-American writer Charlotte Forten writes sadly of the slaughter at Fort Wagner: "It seems very, very hard that the best and noblest must be the earliest called away. Especially has it been so
throughout this dreadful war." There are writings by soldiers in combat. John Esten Cooke, a writer of popular pre-Revolutionary romances serving as a Confererate soldier under J.E.B. Stuart, describes Stonewall Jackson's uniform: "It was positively scorched by sun--had that dingy hue, the product
of sun and rain, and contact with the ground...but the men of the old Stonewall Brigade loved that coat." And John De Forest, a Union officer, describes facing a Confederate volley: "It was a long rattle like that which a boy makes in running with a stick along a picket-fence, only vastly louder;
and at the same time the sharp, quiet whit-whit of bullets chippered close to our ears." And along the way, we sample many vivid portraits of the era, perhaps the most surprising of which is Louisa May Alcott's explanation of why she preferred her noon-to-midnight schedule in a Washington hospital:
"I like it as it leaves me time for a morning run which is what I need to keep well....I trot up & down the streets in all directions, some times to the Heights, then half way to Washington, again to the hill over which the long trains of army wagons are constantly vanishing & ambulances appearing.
That way the fighting lies, & I long to follow."
With unmatched intimacy and immediacy, "...the real war will never get in the books" illuminates the often painful intellectual and emotional efforts of fourteen accomplished writers as they come to grips with "The American Apocalypse."

Book Description
This completely revised and updated edition takes advantage of the many new developments and applications that have occurred in PRINS and in situ PCR technology, including a new fast multicolor PRINS method for identifying human chromosomes, PRINS protocols for in situ detection of unique sequences and point mutation analysis, a new dideoxy PRINS procedure, and in situ PCR and PRINS protocols for plants. The authors describe in detail various applications of PRINS in human (detection of gene deletions in cancer detection of fetal cells in maternal blood, and assessment of aneuploidy in brain tissues and embryos) as well as plant cells. Readily reproducible in situ PCR techniques are also presented for the detection of cytomegalovirus, and for use in combination with microdissection. In situ RT-PCR techniques are also given for use in plant or cancer investigation.
