"Distinctive House Design and Decor of the Twenties: With Over 500 Floor Plans and Illustrations," edited by Richardson Wright, is yet another in Dover's superb series of architectural reprints. The bibliographic note on this book's copyright page states that it "is an unabridged republication of the work originally published by the Conde Nast Publications, Inc., New York in 1925 under the title _House & Garden's Second Book of Houses_."

This volume is full of great visual material: floor plans, elevation drawings, drawings and photos of interior furnishings, drawings of landscaping ideas, and photos of actual houses and architectural details. The book also contains a lot of text. The articles include "Hints for Builders and Buyers," "How to Build a Smokeless Fireplace," "Facts about Paints, Stains and Varnish," and more.

Many different architectural styles are represented: Georgian, Spanish, Tudor, French, bungalow, Dutch colonial. The photos, drawings, and floor plans are full of fascinating details: brickwork, molding styles, bay windows, dormers, wrought iron balconies, fireplaces, chimneys, and more. First Photographs is an extraordinary view into the origins of photography. This landmark monograph - the only book on Talbot to be authored by the Fox Talbot museum's curator - includes many never-before-published images of landscapes, architectural studies, and portraits from Talbot's personal archive and selections from his detailed research notebooks made during the 1830s and 1840s and currently housed at Lacock Abbey in Chippenham, England. A gentleman and an intellectual, Talbot was a great student of the Arts and Sciences and kept detailed notes of his activities and experiments. He discovered the negative/positive paper process which made multiple reproductions of a single image possible, and which distinguished it from its contemporary, the one-of-a-kind daguerreotype. Talbot first announced his invention to the public in 1839 in his paper "An Account Of The Art of Photogenic Drawing Or The Process By Which Natural Objects May Be Made To Delineate Themselves Without The Aid Of The Artist's Pencil." The work he did during this time established in principle and in practice the foundation of modern photography - the basis of the process that is still used today. In addition to Talbot's technological contributions, his photographs represent exceptional artistic achievement. First Photographs includes a significant text by the preeminent Talbot scholar today, Michael Gray, who provides a comprehensive essay, biography, and timeline of Talbot's eventful life and revolutionary work. Tidbits are good........2007-10-03

This book had to have been written while Cokie was doing Coke. It is all over the place. The chapters are misaligned with the text, ie: Abigail Adams personal tidbits preceded the chapter bearing her name. Here and there scattered throughout the book were interesting facts, however, the book rambled so much I am shocked it was published by a journalist!

disappointed.......2007-09-04

I found this to be a very difficult book to finish because it was not what I expected. I was hoping to read more of the letters from the women and less of Cokie Roberts. I was disappointed in this book and got somewhat bored with it. I learned more about Abigail Adams and read more of her letters from the book written about her husband and it was much more interesting.

My review of the book.......2007-06-27

I bought this book because I recently donated Civil War letters written by my great great grandmother from Ripley, MS between 1862-1865. I was told this book was written in much the same style as my letters. I am finding it very interesting that some of our very famous leaders did so little to have a "home life" but left it all up to the women.

Fascinating Book .......2007-04-28

As Cokie Roberts says, we hardly ever hear about the women of the American Revolution. She not only tells us about their lives, but in doing so we hear about how they worked to create our nation along in partnership with the "founding fathers" -- and we see how it so obviously would have been impossible for the men to do it on their own.

Other books barely scratch the surface of these the history of these women; she gives us a full picture of their amazing lives. It is clear from her book that the "founding mothers" -- and sisters and daughters -- were indeed esteemed during that period of history in America.

Cokie Roberts has done amazing research to revive the history that has been lost over time.

I especially loved hearing the author read it and highly recommend the unabridged audio CD.

Interesting.......2007-03-27

Well-researched, but the facts and anecdotes are presented in 2 or 3 word phrases scattered throughout the narrative that reads like historical fiction.

I really enjoyed this wonderful book by C. R. Gibson. The inspirational messages for daily living are descriptive and well meaning to friendships. It is beautifully written and it has meaningful artistic pictures to go along with the messages.
