5 out of 5 stars Drafting House Plans.......2002-05-08

Great teaching tool for beginning architecture students at the high school level. A little out of date but most information is relevant and the students like the way that it's written. Very good guide for CAD class-drawings don't have to be on the board, but sketching is included for obviuos reasons.

Book Description

Winner of the International Center for Photography's 1995 Award for Writing on Photography, Picturing Us brings together a diverse group of African American writers, scholars, and filmmakers in the first concerted effort to analyze and respond to the photographic images of blacks through history. The book's contributors--including bell hooks, E. Ethelbert Miller, Angela Davis, and others--examine the personal and public issues embedded in family portraits and news photographs, movie stills and mug shots.

5 out of 5 stars When Truth Is Found In Our Own Backyard.......2001-05-20

Here's a book of essays that not only reminds us of the dignity to be found in our history as African-Americans, but shows us where to look for them. No longer are we limited to searching for our "roots" through the eyes of "other"; no longer do we have to find "Self" through the acknowledgement of those who have only managed a glimpse at the rich heritage that is African-Americanism. There is something wonderful happening with the emergence of these texts. We are finally learning to love ourselves, which has been the one ingredient lacking in our search for self-worth. This book is a must-read for African-Americans who have yet to learn that our uniqueness is a product of our upbringing, our families and their values and traditions. We are not lost between the pages of some historical text that suggest we are the "disenfranchised." We can finally see ourselves as we truly are - proud and honorable contributors to this nation, complete with a historical and familial past that go beyond the traditional references normally attributed to us. This book is a truly informative edition to any collection.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and personal images.......2001-02-07

Dr. Willis has done something terrific here. She begins assertively and positively, naming a central problem: the depiction of black "otherness" in historical photographic representation. She loves photography, a medium that has "given me the opportunity to walk through history." She believes in photography - and her understanding of the medium's power and her ability to teach it to maximum effect are at the heart of this successful book.

Eighteen contemporary African American artists, writers, poets, professors, and critics contributed essays. As a jumping-off point, the contributors begin with a photograph of their choosing. There are around fifty photos in this book, one image often leading to another.

In some cases, the stories are easier to come by than the photos. Vertamae Smart-Grosvenor writes, "If family stories were photographs, I'd need a small museum to house them, but a shoebox could house all the photos I have of my family." Her amazing grandmother gazes forthrightly at the photographer, but it's the remarkable family stories that are left.

Big themes challenge the reader. Family histories, objective and subjective views of African American culture, suffering and diaspora are, not surprisingly, woven through many of these essays. Some of the photos are well-known; others, not. Contributors chose family photos, and others present personally experienced public images. Robert A. Hill writes on Marcus Garvey, mentioning that through the 1920s there was a huge and important annual parade in Harlem - in which a contemporary newspaper reported that "fifty thousand Negroes of all ranks and stations in life and from every part of the globe - there were princes, high officials of various governments, [...] were in the line of march." (p. 190). Angela Davis regards her own image on 1970 "Wanted" poster. There are daguerreotypes, news photography, and portraiture. In some cases, the absence of photos - and of visual evidence - is the compelling theme.

St. Clair Bourne analyzes African American images in film, including the (cinematic) birth of stereotypes. A gorgeous and confident man exuding "carefree masculine identity," bell hooks' young father before he became a father, is the introductory image in her absorbing essay. E. Ethelbert Miller's "In My Father's House There Were No Images," is sad and disturbing. Disarmingly, he writes, "When you are the baby of the family, seldom do you know what is going on around you," and then proceeds to show that he knew very, very much. His story is compassionate, brilliant and wise. Carla Williams' "The Erotic Image is Naked and Dark," begins with a French daguerreotype from the 1850's in order to discuss physicality and representations of sexuality. Jacquie Jones writes about a photo of a 1930's lynching that as an eleventh grader she spotted in her (integrated) high school textbook "reproduced carelessly in the tome, added as an afterthought to whatever the text was (...)" recording for us the awful moment in which she, in fact, understood the 'banality of evil.' The image, she guesses, was not so unsettling to the white world - and, worse, that the spectators in the photo were, in all likelihood, still very much alive. Jones' deconstruction of her experiences of "intense, personal racism" is at the heart of her essay.

There are contributors' notes at the end, and detailed captions for each photograph. A great and beautiful book.

I bought this book for my boyfriend when it first came out. He's obsessed with football and absolutely adores david beckham, so he loved it. All the pictures were great, especially since he's not that into reading. I would definately reccomend this book to parents who have kids who love soccer and hate reading, or just for anyone that likes soccer in general

I have just recently become a daivd beckham fan so i purchased this book and to my surprise it was one of the best biographies i have ever read. David talks about not only his love for his family but his feelings about man. united and england soccer. This is a must buy for all soccer fans!

5 out of 5 stars Beckham lovers will love the book! Even Beckham haters!.......2002-12-20

My mother brought me this book in England just recently. I've wanted to have the book since it was first released, but its rather expensive if you buy it in Indonesia.
I have been an England fan, a Man United fan, and a Beckham since I was in secondary school 8 years ago. I knew Beckham since he was in the youth club. I lived in England at that time.
I think the book is excellent. The photos are too. I already knew a lot a bout Beckham, but since I read the book, I found out new things that made me respect him even more. He really loves his family and ofcourse football. Hes a real professional! For those of you who are Beckham fans, reading this book is a must! For those who aren't or are even Beckham haters, you'd definitely change your opinion about him. Salute!!

I bought this book in harcover edition via the amazon.uk.co for the reason that it's cheaper to buy from the UK instead of the US. I'm not an American, and either am I a football fan but after reading this book, I think I'm becoming addicted to football games. If you ever know something about Beckham you might know him as the husband of a Spice Girl/Victoria, but there are something more than that. You see this book, and youknow that there's something special towards Beckham. His determination for love and for football is amazing. The book "My world" tells you all because it's only written by Beckham himself. It shows us a intimate look inside Beckham's life. Though it's not that NEW you know, but it's still so great. With the pictures and the words inside this book, you'll know who Beckham is, or who Beckham TRULY is.

                                    Book Description

In the summer of 1861, Americans were preoccupied by the question of which states would join the secession movement and which would remain loyal to the Union. This question was most fractious in the border states of Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. In Missouri, it was largely settled at Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861, in a contest that is rightly considered the second major battle of the Civil War.

In providing the first in-depth narrative and analysis of this important but largely overlooked battle, William Piston and Richard Hatcher combine a traditional military study of the fighting at Wilson's Creek with an innovative social analysis of the soldiers who participated and the communities that supported them. In particular, they highlight the importance of the soldiers' sense of corporate honor—the desire to uphold the reputation of their hometowns—as a powerful motivator for enlistment, a source of sustenance during the campaign, and a lens through which soldiers evaluated their performance in battle.

I can honestly say that i was suprised at the quality of this book. It is the most well written & accurate account of the events leading up to and including the battle of Wilsons Creek that i have ever read.

4 out of 5 stars FULFILLING SOCIAL CONTRACTS with their COMMUNITIES.......2005-01-18

The preface notes "....Wilson's Creek, occurring twenty days after the fighting at Manassas, was the second battle of the Civil War." Nevertheless, as the text observes "Wilson's Creek remains perhaps the least studied major battle of the war."

At the beginning of the Civil War, Missouri was a divided state with a largely pro-Union population; however, there was a significant minority favoring secession also the Governor was pro-secession. The first third of the text covers how both Northern and Southern factions in Missouri and neighboring states recruited and built military units. While Northerners and Southerners had differing motivations for going to war, they were remarkably similar in their commitments as "community pride ran high" and the army volunteer's reputations would become the home folks reputations as well. The volunteers made an unwritten social contract with their communities. These military units had strong community identification so that in their home-towns companies were known by their local designations, for example as Pelican Rifles, in preference to regimental designations such as 3rd Louisiana Company C.

A well researched text covers the efforts of the Northerners and Southerners in Missouri and adjacent states to recruit, equip and train volunteer armies after Fort Sumter was fired on. When Union Captain Nathaniel Lyon was transferred to St. Louis, he began a crusade to rid the state of secessionists thereby further polarizing the state. When Lyon was promoted to brigadier general in sole control of Federal fortunes in Missouri, he began organizing a Federal, but unauthorized, volunteer army. Lyon's attitude and prior experiences directly shaped his conduct in St. Louis, setting in motion a train of events that led to Wilson's Creek. Encouraged by the Governor, the secessionists redoubled their efforts to raise resisting units. The book gives considerable information on the composition of these military units, both Northern and Southern, with brief biographical notes on several of their officers and men.

When Southern General Ben McCulloch learned that Union General Lyon had essentially declared war on Missouri, he immediately began shifting as many troops as possible to southwest Missouri. General Lyon moved to secure northern and central Missouri for the Union and then moved to confront the secessionist armies moving into southwest Missouri. "By mid-July the forces that would fight the second battle of the Civil War were largely in place." The Southern army under McCulloch planned to attack Springfield on August 10, 1861 but rain delayed their departure from the Wilson Creek area. Early on August 10, before McCulloch attacked Springfield, Union General Lyon launched an attack, the final phase of Lyon's "punitive crusade," against Confederate General McCulloch. Lyon thought of himself as anointed to punish the secessionists. Rather than attacking down the road leading to the Southern army, he accepted Union General Sigel proposal that the army be divided with Sigel attacking the Southerners from the rear while Lyon attacked their left flank.

General Lyon attacked shortly after 05:00 A.M. on August 10 in an area later known as Bloody Hill while at 05:30 A.M. Sigel launched what "for its modest size, one of the most effective long range bombardments of the Civil War." The text provides a concise and interesting narrative of the fierce fighting on Bloody Hill and of Sigel's action south of the Southerners. After Sigel was routed, he returned to Springfield. General Lyon was killed during the fighting on Bloody Hill and became one of the war's first martyrs. Command of the Union Army then devolved upon the senior Regular army officer Captain Samuel D. Sturgis. With Union General Sigel routed, ammunition running low, heavy causalities, and the Southerners massing for yet another bloody assault the only logical recourse was to retreat. Therefore, Sturgis and his troops after seven hours of combat, retreated and returned to Springfield arriving around 05:00 P.M.

The book gives an interesting narrative about the level of medical care available to the combatants with graphic descriptions of the conditions in Springfield when the defeated army returned. The authors note "Compared to later Civil War battles, the number of men engaged at Wilson's Creek and the casualties suffered there were modest." However, "....both in total numbers and as a percentage of the force engaged, Lyon's losses were greater than those of any battle in the Mexican War."

As to be expected, early reports of the battle's results were misleading indicating a Northern victory; however, as later information was received a Southern victory was shown. For the combatants on both sides, it was clear that the men had fulfilled their social contract with their communities. Hometown newspapers were quick to proclaim that their community's honor had been upheld and the men were given a heroes welcome upon their return. The authors wrote "All of the men who fought at Wilson's Creek received accolades from their home communities...." In addition, "almost two dozen veterans of Wilson's Creek achieved the rank of general in either the Southern or Northern army."

The book ends noting "The surviving participants of the war shared a heritage of honor regardless of whether they had served in the Federal or Confederate armies." However, for those who had deserted "Having broken the social contract between the community and its soldiers, having disgraced their town, their sins could never be forgotten."

In part, the text does not flow smoothly and in places it is jumbled and run together. However, this book will be of interest to both the serious and occasional reader of Civil War history.

4 out of 5 stars Clash of Communities.......2001-05-02

Piston and Hatcher have produced an excellently detailed overview of the events and participants in the battle and over the surrounding region during the summer of 1861. By beginning with unit histories of the various units engaged, the reader gains a sense of identity with the men who fought and died there. The method itself is excellent, but would be difficult to apply to later engagements in the war. The central argument, that Civil War soldiers were motivated by strong allegiances to their home communities, is well substantiated, but may also be useful only for engagements at the outset of the war. Other authors have successfully shown that this motivation waned, and that national ideology and identity with the adopted community, the unit, sustained men later in the war. The book's major fault is an unbalanced interpretation of events, especially when the leaders of both forces are concerned. Lyon is labeled a madman and Sigel is portrayed as grossly incompetent, while southern commanders are lionized and noticeably escape criticism. The author's assertion that the Missouri State Guard somehow represents a lawful military force evaporates when that same force, guaranteed under the Constitution, raises arms against federal authorities charged with protection of that same Constitution. Overall, the work is excellently researched, especially from local sources, and improved my comprehension of the tragic confrontation.

i found this book to be a struggle to read.It is painfully obvious that the authors have attempted to build a minor engagement into something just short of Bull Run and/orGettysburg. They try hard but in my opinion they do noy carry it off.

I love a book that can pull you into it. This ones certainly does. It's been several years since I toured the battlefield at Wilson's Creek, but Piston and Hatcher do an excellent job in bringing out map details and troop movements that it felt like I was on the battlefield again but this time feeling the intense battle struggle between the two sides. The details on each regiment that fought at Wilson's Creek, North and South, was excellent.

                                            Book Description

This dissertation describes work performed at the Palomar Testbed Interferometer (PTI) during 1998-2002. Using PTI, we developed a method to measure stellar angular diameters in the 1-3 milli-arcsecond range with a precision of better than 5%. Such diameter measurements were used to measure the mass-radius relations of several lower main sequence stars and hence verify model predictions for these stars. In addition, by measuring the changes in Cepheid angular diameters during the pulsational cycle and applying a Baade-Wesselink analysis we are able to derive the distances to two galactic Cepheids (h Aql & z Gem) with a precision of ~10%; such distance determinations provide an independent calibration of the Cepheid period-luminosity relations that underpin current estimates of cosmic distance scales.

Second, we used PTI and the adaptive optics facility at the Keck Telescope on Mauna Kea to resolve the low mass binary systems BY Dra and GJ 569B, resulting in dynamical mass determinations for these systems. GJ 569B most likely contains at least one sub-stellar component, and as such represents the first dynamical mass determination of a brown dwarf. Finally, a new observing technique, dual star phase referencing, was developed and demonstrated at PTI. Phase referencing allows interferometric observations of stars previously too faint to observe, and is a prerequisite for large-scale interferometric astrometry programs such as the one planned for the Keck Interferometer; interferometric astrometry is a promising technique for the study of extra-solar planetary systems, particularly ones with long-period planets.
