Book Description
This lavishly-illustrated volume provides an unprecedented look at twenty-eight houses (plus eleven barns and other structures) built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by Dutch colonists in the north-eastern United States, primarily in upstate New York and along the Hudson River Valley, on Long Island and Staten Island, and in New Jersey. An authoritative work-- written by eminent experts in the field-- Dutch Colonial Homes in America explores the homes in their broader social context by focusing on the historical and religious forces of the times. This book is the first to investigate the meaning of the home and its aesthetics for the Dutch in America, and also the first to look at these homes as a form of art and craft and, importantly, the influence this form and these people had on the shape of the American house to come. The 200 spectacular new color photographs here are beautifully styled in a manner that recalls the paintings of Vermeer and evoke what might have been the ambiance of these homes hundreds of years ago.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book with perfect colour photo's.......2005-09-25
This book provides an overview of a number of houses built by the Dutch colonist and their descendants in the former colony New Netherland. Beautiful photo's and an extensive historical description of eacht house and its area.
One of may favorites.......2005-05-19
This is one of may favorite books featuring authentic Dutch colonials.
The pictures are wonderful as well as the text.
I had no idea as to the contribution the Dutch had not only in architecture but to the development of the country.
There are many distinctions in their details. There are also many commonalities. I've been able to sort through and incorporate some simple but memorable treatments in one of my projects thanks to this book.
It's a great reference for ideas as well as history and I turn to it often as of late.
wonderful visuals!!.......2002-10-15
This book contains some of the best visuals I have seen in quite a long time. The useage of lateral light to bring out texture, color, and ambience is striking. The authors have succedded in isolating commonplace daily scenes found in everything from common humble surroundings to the grandest settings. All scenes are presented equally well, and ,most important, in a new manner- Thus allowing the contemporary viewer to more than glimpse into the past. The visuals are accompainied with an informative, very readable text to greatly aid the reader in interpretation of the scenes depicted. Well done!
great book on a little known subject.......2002-09-27
The material culture of the Dutch in America has always been misunderstood, mis-interrupted, and ignored. Now a book which gives visual evidence of the major contributions of the Dutch in the New World- how this culture in large part contributed to the newly emerging American culture and society.
This is a must read for anyone interested in early American history as well as the colonial era.

How To Draw..........2002-09-13
I have 5 volumes of the HOW TO DRAW series and I think this is one of the best because it shows a variety of different characters, ape, man, woman, panther... of course, there would be more to learn about Tarzan and how to draw the animals and maybe even some items like the treehouse or similar, but you can't have everything. It's a good reference book if you want to try your hand at drawing. Beginners will find it a challenge to "copy" a given picture following the step by step instructions. Artists with some experience will find the hints and a glance at the techniques used helpful.
Smaller format?.......1999-08-04
Hmm. It seems that they've lopped-off a couple of inches from the height and width of the new "How to Draw" titles. It's still a good book with detailed drawing tips. Not for the absolute beginner though. A budding artist should look into some of the earlier Walter Foster drawing/animation books.

Drawing for the unartistic.......2001-08-15
I have maximum enthusiasm and minimal artistic abilities. I stripped a small wooden dresser and began repainting it for the nursery. Using this book, a pencil with a good eraser, and a lot of sunlight and patience, I created a remarkable young Tarzan and his ape mom! I was so impressed with myself, I sat back and stared at it for a long time. I've been drawing misfigured and misproportioned Disney characters for my neices and nephews for a long time. Finally, with the help of this book, I was able to make some characters that would be instantly recognizable by anyone, even if they're not entirely forgiving tiny tots!
Lots and lots.......2001-08-13
You get a lot with this book. The book includes all the main characters: Tarzan- adult, Tarzan- baby, Tarzan - 5 year old, Kala, Kerchek, Terk, Tantor,Professor Porter, Jane, and Clayton as well as fauna and flora : butterfly; lovebirds; vines; bamboo etc. The characters are a little harder to draw than other the classic Disney characters. Its not fault of the book, since the characters in Tarzan are much more detailed and complex. The book is full of tips to help ease the difficulty - how to draw the eyes correctly; placement of eyebrows; placement and shape of wrinkle around the nose; etc. The book includes lots color pictures of Tarzan and his friends so a big Disney Tarzan fan won't be disappointed. Although I haven't seen the smaller size version, I would highly recommend this oversize book. I would think the detailing required for these characters would be harder to draw and master from a smaller image.
Book Description
Almost overnight, the United States Army went from having a near-nonexistent armored force to fielding a world-class operation. The story of the armored battalions equipment, designed with incredible ingenuity and produced with unparalleled speed, unfolds in this book, which also recounts the adventures of the valorous Americans who rode these machines into combat on the attlefields of World War II.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting Survey.......2007-07-26
Nothing in-depth, but a handy overview of US armored vehicles used in the Second World War. The book is heavily illustrated and relatively inexpensive, and will fill some gaps for those whose libraries on the topic are limited. Yeide is better than most authors at correctly identifying most US tanks by their type and subtype, so the captions are mostly reliable. However, he repeats the widespread fallacy that only twenty M26 Pershing heavy tanks were sent to Europe. In fact, after that first batch of twenty arrived in February, 1945, deliveries continued through VE Day, and about 300 were delivered, of which 250 were issued to front line units.
For books dealing with these subjects in greater depth, look for titles by Steven Zaloga, Bruce Culver or R. P. Hunnicutt.
An Outstanding Book on America's Tanks in WW2........2007-06-20
This is an exceptionally good photo chronicle of the tanks the United States entered WWII with and the heavier machines it produced to counter the German panzers they encountered. There is particularly good photo content of early light tank development, early Sherman variations, and some great color photos as well. For the money, you simply cannot ask for a better book on this subject. This one will entertain and educate history enthusiasts and model builders alike.
How the U.S. Army went from having a near-nonexistent armored force to a world-class fighting unit almost overnight.......2006-09-07
Harry Yeide's Weapons Of The Tankers: American Armor In World War II (0760323291, $24.95) tells how the U.S. Army went from having a near-nonexistent armored force to a world-class fighting unit almost overnight. Chapters not only review tank performance and history, but survey their development, strategies, and soldiers who operated them under impossible conditions. Vintage black and white photos on nearly every page pack the presentation.
An exellent general reference work..........2006-06-17
Harry Yeide is already familiar to historians of US armored forces. Mr. Yeide's earlier books "The Tank Killers" and "Steel Victory" have been highly rated by military historians. This time he gives a general overview of the equipment and organization of US Army armored units of WW2. There are sections on the growth of the Armored Force and how the organizations evolved to meet tactical needs or battlefield lessons. He also covers the controversy about why American tanks didn't have big "tank killer" guns like their German counterparts. Yeide covers some of the lesser appreciated topics, such as the radios that were increasingly plentiful on the WW2 battlefield and led to better command and coordination of Allied units. Each class of tank receives its own section with appropriate commentary on its development and use. Coverage is also given to support vehicles like assault guns and to the little know "secret weapons" like mine destroyers and the ultra-secret night combat searchlight program.
This is NOT an in-depth technical description of a tank, but rather an excellent view of the tanks and how they fit into the team that helped beat the German Army.
The price is VERY reasonable, especially with the color photos and amount of good information involved. Anyone interested in the history of the US Army, armored forces or WW2 in Europe should have a copy of this book.

Book Description
The goal of this volume is to discuss--in depth--the ways in which various "deviations" from "traditional" family styles affect childrearing practices and child development. Each of the contributors illustrates the dynamic developmental processes that characterize parenting and child development in contexts that can be deemed "nontraditional" because they do not reflect the demographic characteristics of the traditional families on which social scientists have largely focused. The contributors deal with the dynamics and possible effects of dual-career families, families with unusually involved fathers, families characterized by the occurrence of divorce, single parenthood, remarriage, poverty, adoption, reliance on nonparental childcare, ethnic membership, parents with lesbian or gay sexual orientations, as well as violent and/or neglectful parents. By doing so, the authors provide thoughtful, literate, and up-to-date accounts of a diverse array of "nontraditional" or traditionally understudied family types. All the chapters offer answers to a common question: How do these patterns of childcare affect children, their experiences, and their developmental processes? The answers to these questions are of practical importance, relevant to a growing proportion of the families and children in the United States, but also have significant implications for the understanding of developmental processes in general. As a result, the book will be of value to basic social scientists, as well as those professionals concerned with guiding and advising clients and public policy.

An in-depth, comprehensive examination of a fighting force that lasted nearly 1,000 years.......2006-03-06
Community learning librarian and experienced scholar Pat Southern presents The Roman Army: A Social And Institutional History, an in-depth, comprehensive examination of a fighting force that lasted nearly 1,000 years. Organized thematically, and drawing heavily upon archaeological and historical evidence including letters from Roman soldiers to their relatives at home, The Roman Army explores the value systems, bureaucracy, traditions, culture, daily life, and much more of this highly organized fighting institution, and the meticulous manner in which payment for the soldiers was calculated with deductions for food, clothing, weapons, and other expenses. A glossary and index round out this fascinating, "must-have" reference for military historians and scholars of the Roman empire.
Book Description
Food is not simply a popularly imagined and well-known manifestation of Jewish culture. For Jews, food has been a means of exclusion, persecution, and assimilation by the larger society. Equally important, it has been an instrument of community, reparation, and renewal of identity. Food and Judaism presents a wide range of research on the history and interpretation of Jewish food practices and meanings. This volume covers a comprehensive array of topics, including American regional manifestations of food practices from little-known Jewish communities in cities such as contemporary Brighton Beach and Memphis; a social history of Jewish food in America by the renowned expert on Jewish food Joan Nathan; and an examination of how the American food industry appealed to early twentieth-century Jews. Several discussions of the religious meaning and personal advantages of following a vegetarian lifestyle are considered from biblical and historical perspectives. A rescued cookbook text from the Theresienstadt concentration camp is juxtaposed with an examination of how garlic in Jewish cooking served as an anti-Semitic caricature in early modern Europe. Historical perspectives are also provided on the use of separate dishes for milk and meat, the sanctification of Hasidic foods in Eastern Europe, and "mystical satiation" as found in the medieval Kabbalah. Leonard J. Greenspoon is a professor of classical and Near Eastern studies and theology and holds the Klutznick Chair in Jewish Civilization at Creighton University. Ronald A. Simkins is an associate professor of theology and director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Society at Creighton University. Gerald Shapiro is a professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
