I needed this book for one of my college classes and the Amazon price was almost 3/4 cheaper then in the schools book store. This book was only used for about 3-4 months and from what I saw from the textbook... it was great. I learned a lot and I might keep it around just in case I need it for a future math class. Clear guide to basic perspective.......2004-06-18

For some reason, perspective is the boogey-man of many people learning to draw. It doesn't have to be that way. This book will help you put that sense of solidity and reality into a drawing.

This book gives a clear, step by step introduction to the basics of drawing in perspective. Interior and exterior; 1-, 2-, and 3-point; they're all here. The techniques are all graphical, and require only basic ability to handle simple drafting tools.

As the title says, this covers just the basics. It covers them thoroughly, so the hard-working reader should come away from it with very usable skills.

Not just for engineers and architects........2003-02-02

I got this book because I had a floor plan that I wanted to make into a 3D or at least 2D home elevation. I've never taken a drawing course and before this, everything I drew was rubbery or floating. :-)

I found this book to be a great help, even in drawing circles, cylinders and curves. It explains shading and light sources, multiple vanishing points, intersecting just about anything and even gives you an idea of how to draw unique shapes in a 3D perspective. All the examples are step-by-step progressions of each concept and really show you how to do it.

You don't have to know sines and cosines, and you don't need a compass or protractor (although they might help). All you need is a pencil, ruler and eraser.

About 85% of the book is dedicated to shapes and structures, but there are also examples of furniture, cars and even people.

An excellent starting point for drawing in perspective.

This decorating book may not be for everybody, but I SURE DID LOVE IT!

If you are expecting a "HOW TO" decorating book, then this is book may not be for you. However, if you've been looking for a book with wonderful photos of truly romantic (modern) homes, [and with GORGEOUS photos], then you might like this book, as I did.

(Plz note... my stress is on the words :"ROMANTIC MODERN")

This is more or less a coffee-table book. At least that's how I see it.

As with most BETTER HOMES books, this book has gorgeous photos, as stated before.

Once again, I have to say that the stress of this book is on "modern romantic" style decorating.

Continually Inspiring .............2006-11-22

I can't begin to tell you how many times I've referred to and reread this book over the years. It always reinspires me to try to achieve the casual, opulent, lush, intriguing, chic, timeless feelings expressed on the pages of this book. I highly recommend this book to inspire and guide your own decorating vision.

So beautiful and filled with ideas.......2002-08-23

Until I got this book, my favorite decorating book in the last year or so was French Influences. This book is in the same vein as French Influences, but it is shot in what look to be American homes. The European style decorating ideas are translated for you. Not only do I love this book, but so many of my friends pick it up and want it when they come over that I've started giving it as birthday and wedding gifts.

Romance for American homes.......2002-05-08

I had to write my own review because I just read a review from someone who said that the book was about European interiors (or something like that). The book is clearly photographed in American homes and is full of romantic ideas that I can use here in the northeast. I can easily translate the ideas in the book using new furniture and decorative accessories from local stores and from some of my favorite catalogs (like Ballard Designs and Rue de France).

What's missing are the "details" ..........2002-04-29

If you're expecting a DIY 'how-to' of Romantic Style, you will not find it in the pages of this book. Granted, it is filled with beautifully-breathtaking photos of all of the homes showcased but, if you're looking for the "real" how-to "details," they're sorely missing.

Looking at photos is definitely awe-inspiring -- but, I want to hear the 'details' of how each look was achieved ... along with alternative options for creating the same, or similar, looks on anyone's budget. Romantic Style took the form of a somewhat elitist expression of 'lifestyles of the rich and famous' instead of a 'to-the-masses' type read.

And, at least in my circle of friends, acquaintances and design colleagues, very few have the unlimited funds to jet off to Europe, Asia or Africa whenever the urge strikes to bring back antiques, furniture and furnishings to transform their homes into the "romantic style" as most of the homes showcased have described. With a unlimited gold card and frequent access to jet around the world I, too, could create rooms to rival the ones in this book - but, in the real world, it would have been more beneficial if the book had shown a wider range of ideas for achieving the looks -- from budget-conscious - to - carte blanche.

I read this book to my son when he was 5 years old. Not only did he understand what was read to him, he retained a lot of information about Ernie Pyle. Ernie was a very interesting person, and my son was absorbed with the book. Now that he is beginning to read, it won't be long before he reads it again on its own. Barbara has a way of making a story fun and interesting.

This book was awful. I lost this book halfway through and it didn't matter to me. Normally if I lost a book I would go through the house so I could finish it.
I'm a big Sox fan and Joe Castiglione is a great broadcaster, but he's not a great author. One star for trying.

Within months of its greatest triumph in 1942, the Japanese Imperial Army began to face the difficulties which would eventually destroy it - overstretched supply lines, and inadequate industrial support. Yet as the Allies grew steadily stronger and more skilful, the Japanese Army and Naval Landing Forces dug in to defend their conquests with a determination which shocked all who fought them. In this second book the author describes the deployments, organisation, uniforms and equipment of the Army - including the dreaded Kempei-tai military police - the naval infantry, paratroopers, special raiding units, and foreign auxiliaries during the long and savage war in Burma and the Pacific. His text is illustrated with many rare photographs, three insignia charts, and eight highly detailed colour plates.

A good reference for small details.......2007-09-24

This like the other titles in Osprey's "Men at Arms" series is devoted to the minutia of the soldiers' equipment, uniforms, and life in the military. The difference in quality between these various volumes is quite small- they are all packed with information. None of them pretend to be histories of campaigns or wars. This particular volume covers well, the pre- WWII era to early war of the Japanese Army. It is not a subject on which a great deal is written. I was hoping for some more photos of the Manchurian army and Nomonhan event in particular, than was included in this book. Stephen Andrew's illustrations are among the better in Ospreys' series, but I do think he could do better faces. And I have found some contradictory photo evidence to the descriptions of the uniforms. One last point, since many of us who purchase these volumes use them for reference in modelling and painting would be that they include fairly accurate color samples of the uniforms and equipment rather than descriptive words like brown and khaki which are just too generic; or at least some assurance the color artwork is based on some substantial evidence. All in all this is a really great volume and I would highly recomend it to anyone interested in the Japanese soldier of the 30's and early WWII.

A good reference on a little documented subject.......2004-10-14

I thought that this was one of Osprey's better books in the "Warrior" series. Some excellent information on unit structure and the various unifroms worn by the Japanese soldiers of this period that is hard to come by in english language references. A previous reviewer criticized the book for spending too much time on the "minutia" of Japanese military uniforms and not enough on tactics. This is, however, akin to complaining that an apple does not taste like an orange; these books are not meant to discuss tactics or campaigns, but are intended to focus on the "minutia" of uniforms and personal equipment. The brief format does not really allow the subject matter to range too far. Anyone interested in more information on Japanese tactics in WW2 should consider some of the excellent Osprey "Campaign" series of books, including ones on Iwo Jima and Peleilui.

Almost No Information on Tactics or Doctrine.......2002-02-16

Volume 1 of Osprey's Men-at-Arms title on the Japanese Army in Second World War is the first of two thin volumes that will cover this often-neglected subject. While the color uniform plates are excellent as always, the rest of the volume is rather bland and without much unique detail. For readers interested in Japanese uniforms of the Second World War, this volume is quite good but for the military historian, it is a disappointment.

The volume begins with a brief background on the Japanese strategic situation and the nature of Japanese soldiers. An excellent 4-page section covers the organization of Japanese army units from army-level down to platoon. Unfortunately, six pages are then wasted in a generalized chronology that astounds the reader with facts like Pearl Harbor was bombed on December 7, 1941. Osprey seems not to grasp the fact that anyone having enough interest in the Japanese army in the Second World War to purchase this volume will probably be aware of the basic chronology of the war and prefer the limited space to concentrate on the subject. Another 11 excruciatingly dull pages are spent discussing the finer points of Japanese army uniforms and ancillary items, including minutiae like armbands and optional footwear. Only three quick pages cover all weaponry, from pistols to artillery; tanks are ignored. There is virtually no discussion of Japanese tactics or doctrine, except for one or two paragraphs intermixed in the chronology section, and this is an unpardonable error in this kind of volume. The fact that the author buries the reader under a mass of near-useless information about various types of Japanese field jackets and then neglects to mention how these troops were trained or fought is ludicrous. Perhaps the second volume in this series will make amends, but that appears doubtful.

On the plus side, the author does provide some order of battle data on the Japanese army in China and in December 1941, as well as sidebars on Japanese military terminology. While the author does discuss the three different types of Japanese infantry division, there is little information on independent brigades or unique qualities of any specific units. Japanese corps and army level organization is ignored, as well as the relationship with Japanese army aviation. Issues like soldier psychology, training, officer selection, military intelligence and logistic support are skimmed over or ignored altogether. This volume is certainly colorful and the subject interesting, but it does not deliver much.
