An excellent book that needs a prequel.......2007-01-09

This is an excellent book about Islamic Architecture. It offers a comprehensive coverage of building typologies, their influences, and the context (historical and geographic) within which these types can be found. However, I cannot use it as a textbook alone. I need to complement the content with other sources that talk about cultural context as both determinants and modifiers of the built form. I complement the book with George Michell's "Architecture of the Islamic World", the work of AlSayyad, Rapport, and many of the published work of the Aga Khan program.

Excellent Introduction to Watercolor Techniques.......2001-10-10

If most beginners are like me, they dont realize the full range of artistic expression that is possible with watercolors.

This book shows you what is possible, then shows you how to do it. It covers the basics very well, including flat washes, graded washes, wet-on-dry, bulding up colors, wet-in-wet, as well as a full range of special techniques (masks, scumbling, stippling, sponge painting, craping, knifing, glazing).

The book features hundreds of micro-lessons, each illustrated with color photographs that show how to gradually achieve the desired effect. The examples used to illustrate these techniques also show what wonderful results you can get with watercolors.

This book is both instructional and inspirational.

Highly Recommended. An excellent companion to Marian Appellof's Everything You Wanted To Know About Watercolor, though I actually preferred Appellof's book to this one.

This book shows step by step technique and guidance to create your own watercolour masterpiece. My mother sent me in search of a good book to help in her hobby, and I stumbled across this one in a local library, and she suggested it was a "must have" for any budding watercolour enthusiast. It shows step to step instruction on how to not only layer your watercolour, but a wide variety of other techniques previously unknown by myself or my mum ! The text is written clearly and all steps are illustrated and explained for the amateur or someone more experienced. This book would make a welcome addition to watercolour artists across the board.

The writer Harvey Lloyd displays a wide ranging knowledge of the art and craft of aerial photography. The handsomely illustrated book covers all aspects of aerial photography and includes a great deal of very informative text on the art and practice of photography. Attention is paid to self-promotion. It is evident that the writer has gone to great lengths to provide useful information and that he is inspired by and in love with aerial photography. A must read for anyone whou would leave the ground to see the world as it is.

This is a rich and textured memior of youth in the South. Wayne Greenhaw is one of the great voices of Southern writers. This is his most personal and engaging work. If you love Harper Lee, Pat Conroy, and Truman Capote, you will love this book.

It seems somehow fitting that the first pass Peyton Manning, the $48 million man, threw as a professional went for a touchdown. His father Archie Manning, in this team effort from two of football's more interesting quarterbacks, stresses that "My only hard rule [with his sons growing up] was that they finish what they start." Peyton, the All-American Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Tennessee, obviously listened to his All-American from Ole Miss father, whose strong right arm almost made the Saints competitive over 12 seasons in New Orleans.

Though both father and son get equal billing, this is really Archie's book, his story, and the story of his family that he wants to tell. He gets the first word and the last in this hybrid joint first-person memoir with chapter intros and structural transitions provided by Sports Illustrated veteran John Underwood. Like most sports biographies, it's rife with inspiration, decisions to be made, challenges to face (Peyton's older brother had to cut short his career when he was diagnosed with a potentially fatal spinal cord disease), tragedy faced (Archie's father killed himself while Archie was in college), and expectations exceeded. But it also has a lot of straight talk from Archie about family and football, and he's not above throwing a few penalty flags on the game. He's loud and clear on college recruiting abuses--as is Peyton. He worries about youth leagues putting pressures to succeed over fun in playing, hates all the taunting and celebrating in the NFL, and thinks there's just too darned much money and too little team loyalty in football's veins these days. In Manning, Archie and Payten Manning, with writer John Underwood, provide a compelling look at football from the perspectives of two generations of players.One, an experienced and battle-scarred father, and the other, a son who has exploded on to the national scene as one of the best young quarterbacks in the history of the NFL.

Together they take a hard look at their careers and all of American football, dissecting the big-money madness, race relations within the NFL (and in sports in general), the rituals of bribery that mark college recruiting, and fans who can no longer identify with the insatiable cash fever in pro sports. They discuss organizational sports and why white youngsters aren't out there playing the game like they used to; the college game as compared to the pros; coaches, good and bad; and why the quarterback position is the most difficult one in all of sports.

It all began in a town called Drew in the heart of the Mississippi Delta -- farm country, where you'd find crops of cotton, soybeans, and rice. As a boy, Archie didn't have much to do outside of school except play sports. Lots of sports. He played them all and he played them well. But football was his passion, and if you lived in Mississippi in the 1960s, there was only one college for you: Ole Miss.

While there, Archie made All-America twice and was so impressive at quarterback, could do so many things to win games, that Bear Bryant, the great Alabama coach, said that he was "the most athletic quarterback I've ever seen." He became, John Grisham wrote, "a legend larger than life." Archie's exploits led him to be selected second in the NFL player draft, where he embarked on a fourteen-year career in the NFL, winning All-Pro and MVP honors. But he labored with the Saints, taking a fearful beating and never winning a championship. The Saints became known as the "Ain'ts."

Meanwhile, he married and had three boys. All three would grow up to be carbon copies of their father: none under 6'4" or 200 pounds. First was Cooper, loose and lightheartened, only wide receiver of the bunch whose football aspirations were cut short by a spinal disorder while a freshman at Ole Miss. Second was Peyton, more serious, studious, and driven, though quite capable of pranks. Third was Eli, who followed in Peyton's footsteps and became an All-State quarterback for three years. Today he is a quarterback at his father's alma mater, Ole Miss.

For Peyton, playing college ball was the fulfillment of a dream and he chose Tennessee. As a teenager he memorized audiotapes of Archie's games at Ole Miss, repeated the play-by-play under his breath as he practiced ("Manning from Drew rolls right...He throws down field to Franks of Biloxi...Touchdown!") and imagined himself performing the same heroics as his father. "I would love to played in the '60s," Peyton says. But he himself did okay in the '90s. Peyton's teams won 39 of 44 games, and he became Tennessee's all-time leading passer, set 33 records, and wound up third in NCAA history in career passing yards and fourth in touchdown passes. He won any number of awards, was named NCAA Player of the Year, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

Peyton was selected first in the NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts, a struggling franchise. He was the only quarterback to take every snap in 1998, but his team had a dismal 3-13 and made the playoffs. Peyton was voted to be the AFC starting quarterback in the Pro Bowl.

Manning is a truly personal and inspiring story of a family, a tradition, and a legacy, providing a stirring -- and at times controversial -- look at football during the past fifty years.

Manning is an ideal read for any fan of football, and sets a high bar for other autobiographies by athletes to follow. Manning is about the lives and football careers of father Archie Manning and son Peyton Manning. Archie starts off the book describing his childhood in the quiet, peaceful, but hard life in the small town of Drew, Mississippi. Archie continues chronologically by talking about his career in high school for Drew, college for the University of Mississippi, and finally his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints.
Peyton begins his segment at the end of Archie's by starting straight off with his high school career at Newman. Peyton describes his time in high school, playing with his brother Cooper, by saying "1991 was like no other." Peyton then follows in suit by talking about his time in college at Tennessee and about his continuing career in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts.
While Manning can easily entertain any fan of football or fan of the Mannings, someone who is not interested in either should not spend their time reading this book. On the other hand, fans of football or the Mannings would love every page of this book. In my opinion, the beginning of this book is very slow because of Archie's lackluster life in Drew. Although, once Archie begins to talk more about high school, the book begins to pick up by a lot. So in conclusion, any fan of football or admirer of the work of these two great football players will find this book as a very good read.

Best Autobiography I've Ever Read.......2006-06-21

This is an excellent book, written by Archie and Peyton Manning. It starts of with a really painful experience for Archie, and it goes through Archie's entire life and career, and it talks about the begining of Peyton's career and most of his childhood. I would recomend this book to anyone, and to everybody who loves the Manning family, like I do.

I bought this book with skepticism but overall I liked it. I thought it was pretty truthful to the Manning legacy. The SEC's most famous bloodline's story is here. I recommend it as I do "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football" which also showcases the Mannings.

Archie and Peyton Manning were the best father-son quarterbacks out there. As a kid Archie wasn't sure what he was going to do with his life. He was just an average kid who loved sports. As a kid Peyton dreamed of being like his father Archie. He continued the family name by breaking more records and leading just as good of a career as Archie.
Archie went to Mississippi college but wasn't sure what sport he wanted to play. He ended up playing football and was very good at it. After college football, Archie was drafted onto the Saints. Archie broke the record for highest paid rookie. When Archie was drafted onto the Saints they were on a bad loosing streak and Archie joining the team didn't change that. For the first time Archie was getting booed. Archie was a very good player but one person doesn't make a team. Eventually Archie's career took off and he became famous.
As a teenager Peyton knew he was going to play football, he just didn't know what college he was going to go to. Peyton was already somewhat famous, being Archie's, son so he had a ton of choices for which college he wanted to go to. Surprisingly, he chose to go to a college other than Mississippi. This was very surprising to his father because Peyton wanted to be just like Archie but chose not to go to the same college. Once he was in the NFL he was, like his father, the highest paid rookie ever. Peyton was drafted onto the Colts and they weren't doing so well when he was drafted. Peyton's rookie year was 3-13, but he broke several team and league records. Peyton's career had skyrocketed just like his father Archie's.
Overall, this was a great book. It tells a lot about Archie and Peyton's careers. I think it was really cool how the book described their feelings and their lives. The book tells a lot of details about their careers and what they were thinking before games or major decisions.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes football and would enjoy reading about it.

Thought provoking.......2006-10-04

I'll begin by saying that this is an excellent book and highly recommended to anyone interested in the field. Well written and great to read even for a non-military reader.
Unfortunately, the case studies and battles are not really described, and if you were not already familiar with the battles before (as I was not in 2 of 3), the analyses will not help to gain any real understanding.
Second, the model presented is an excellent tool for "post mortem" analyses. However, since according to the model, the major factor that will decide the outcome of the battle is force emplacement, and since it cannot be known in advance what will the force emplacement be (neither for friendly nor for enemy forces), the model cannot really be used to predict outcomes of future battles. I see this as a major problem with the model.

Provocative, Brillant and Controversial.......2005-11-13

The author presents a balanced, provocative and well presented case for how victory or defeat occurs in battle. This book is designed for both the tecnical numbers kind of person and also the less technical. The chapters can be read as a stand alone or you can also go through the entire book. Either way it has immense value.
The thesis of this book is that force employment, or the doctrine and tactics by which forces are used in combat is centrally important. This book is great reading, is controversial in its presentation but clearly provides both empirical and quantitative analysis to support his position. THIS BOOK IS A MUST READ.

Brilliant study of modern warfare.......2005-02-21

Stephen Biddle, a Professor at the US Army War College, has produced an important book on modern warfare. He shows how material forces, numbers and technology, only count if used in the modern system. Force deployment shapes the role of material forces. He analyses full data-sets of modern battles, proving that bigger is not always better.

The increasing lethality of firepower means that since 1914 exposed mass movement is suicidal. Only the modern system of using combined arms, cover and concealment enables the attackers' forces to survive the defence's response.

Biddle looks at three significant battles, firstly, the successful German attack of March 1918. For preponderance theorists, the Allies should have stopped this attack dead. The German/British force-to-force ratio was 1.5/1, among the least favourable of any major attack of the war. The British had a few more tanks, but the main weapons were still the infantry and guns of 1915-18, a defence-dominant technology. The British official history blamed the fog, as if there had been no fog until then.

The Germans won an unprecedented breakthrough, advancing 40 miles across a 50-mile front. The Germans implemented the modern system tactically and to some extent operationally; the British didn't. This broke the great stalemate, not new technology, US intervention or exhaustion.

Biddle's second example, Operation Goodwood in July 1944, was the failed Allied effort to break out of the Normandy beachhead. The British had more troops and weapons: 1,277 tanks, 4,500 aircraft and 118,000 troops against 319 tanks, several hundred aircraft and 29,000 troops. If preponderance theorists were right, the British would have won, but they tried an exposed mass tank charge, unsupported by infantry or suppressive artillery.

Biddle's third example is Operation Desert Storm of 1991, which US forces won with an unprecedentedly low loss rate. US forces used the modern system, the Iraqis did not. The superior US air technology did not eliminate the Iraqi resistance: 2,000 tanks still fought back after the air assault. US troops with or without advanced ground technology, and those fighting local engagements at better or worse odds, won equally convincingly.

This is an exceptional work of real empirical science. Steve Biddle has a hypothesis that "force employment" is a more important determinant of military success than either technology or preponderance of military forces. He subjects this hypothesis to a wide range of analytical and empirical tests, and the evidence in support of his argument is compelling. And the author has the foresight to raise many of the issues that occur to a skeptical reader, and to treat them with reasoned analysis and data. His prose is clear, and this is compelling reading even to one who is not an expert in this field.

An interesting thesis.......2004-07-27

According to Stephen Biddle force employment or the use of combined arms is the secret to military success not superior technology or overwhelming numbers. The first example that Biddle uses is the opening German offensive in 1918 against the British in which they succeded intially against the English army due to effective coordination of artillery and infantry. The second case that Biddle brings up is the British operation Goodwood against the Germans in 1944. The British failed, according to Biddle, due to the lack of cooperation between infantry and armor.Also Biddle dispels the myth that technology alone won Desert Storm because the Marines,equipped with only sixties era tanks, were able to defeat the Iraqis with superior tactics. The only weakness of Biddle's book is that he leaves out the two cases in which opponents with superior nummers defeated a force with effective force employment methods which is the defeat of the Germans to the Russians in the summer of 1944, and the rout of the Americans from North Korea by the Chinese in the winter of 1950. Otherwise, Biddle writes an effective case that force employment and not technology is the most important factor in military victory.

Wonderfully readable handling of a big topic.......2007-07-17

Developing the "sequential" and the "cumulative " strategies (the big battle; death by a thousand cuts - if I may vastly simplify), Wylie discusses continental, maritime, air, and Maoist war strategies. His dismay at the shallow shelf of the study of war, as contrasted to vast output in so many other human dimensions, gives this excellent book a rather lonely feel. But what a supple intellect is here! I can well understand the praise heaped upon him by later analysts, such as Colin Gray (whose book THE SHERIFF ought to be read in conjunction, if I may add). I
was surprised by Wylie's easy shunting aside of Clausewitz at one point, but later asks for scholarly insight into the contrast between him and Mao. Military History Quarterly did something like that in 2007.

The study of brain lesions and their impact on cognition and behavior has been the dominant tool used to examine the complex function of the brain for the last three centuries. By testing neuropsychological deficits that correlate with a lesion in a particular part of the brain, it is possible to hypothesise about the role and cognitive function of that individual brain area. Over the past several decades, the rapid development and implementation of many new technologies to visualize brain activity has greatly augmented our understanding of brain function. However, even now there are many experimental questions that are difficult, if not impossible to answer in any way other than lesion techniques. Such studies though are not without their own challenges to overcome such as lesion-induced neuroplasticity, widespread degenerative changes, and the permanent nature of a lesion. Recent developments in different fields of neuroscience have provided tools to overcome many of the problems related to conventional lesion techniques and have succeeded to synthesizing these new approaches with a variety of new techniques to visualize brain activity on the level of individual neurons as well as on the level of cognitive performance. These 'virtual lesions' involve the temporary deactivation of a part of the brain, by means of a range of techniques that have been recently developed. Because these deactivations are reversible, and leave the neuronal substrate unaffected, they provide a much more controllable, and rigorous way of testing subjects. These 'virtual lesion' approaches provide an essential bridge across the gap between basic research and computational approaches and provide mechanisms to test the applicability of models and their annexant hypotheses.
