Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2004-12-18
I have to first say thank you to the author for giving us this exhaustively researched book. I expecially appreicated that the house was most always pictured with the description. The historical B&W photos are great. The book also lets you know if the house is still in extant, that is KEY in a book of this kind. I was amazed at how many survived and saddened at those that didn't. Your heart will pound as you look down to read if the beautiful house you are looking at survived. I think it is sad that so many know about the great houses of Newport and the Hudson River Valley, but forget about the greatest collection of all: The Gold Coast of Long Island. I hope if this book does nothing else,it makes developers think for a second before tearing down history. We will never see houses in America like this again. Job well done, indeed.

Outstanding book.......2007-06-05
It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.
Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers, 2nd Edition.......2007-01-06
This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-01-03
This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.
EXCELLENT rendering help.......2006-02-25
My rendering skills have improved HUGELY scince recieving this book. It helps with marker, colored pencils, pastels, how to treat light, etc. My renderings look amazing and it is a great reference for when I'm not sure how to treat a surface/object. I would absolutely recommend this book.

Excellent resource for landscape designers and landscape architects.......2007-02-17
This book should definitely be on the shelf of anyone who designs landscapes unless you have already mastered all there is to know about plan graphics. The first edition of this book was very good, but the second edition is even better. The only reason I gave it a raing of four stars rather than five is that it contains only a very brief section about color rendering, a topic that deserves much more attention than Bertauski gives it. But it's still a great book even with that imperfection.
Perfect building blocks for landscape plan graphics.......2006-06-21
We used this book in Landscape Design at my college. It is an essential tool for the basics of plan graphics and design layout. It focuses on keeping the design clean and professional. I STRONGLY recommend this book to any first year Landscape Design student, or any professional who needs a good reference tool.
Even better than the Excelent first edition.......2006-04-30
This book doesnt' fail in maintain its focus on very practical aproach of the subject. It adopts a direct and easy to follow language and tips: Doesn't pretend to be artificially academic, intends strongly to help the beginners on their careers as the veterans too. Would be obvious that all books dealing with the same subject should present top quality on editorial design, but in many cases it's not true. This book, instead, cares a lot about its graphic presentation. The 2nd edition shows even better layout and more useful photos and drawings than those already great found on the previous edition. Covering decently the computer aplications on landscape renderings, it counts 264 pages: almost double comparing to the competing books and it's clearly cheaper, available at a fair price. My favourite in Landscape rendering field.

.......2006-11-10
This book serves as a comprehensive reference for ways of thinking about drawing, applications of different media, the creative environment, drawing exercises, creating textures, shadows, and trees, composing the drawing, perspective drawing, plan, elevation, section, axonometric and isometric drawing, drawing the figure, and layout.
Using as Text.......2006-11-04
Wonderful book! We're currently using it in our beginning studio class. Sullivan has a wonderful sense of humor, good skill building exercises and really good graphics. Highly recommend it for anyone wanting how to draw the landscape.
Not that great.......2003-07-06
i was looking for a book on this subject, the writer the publisher, it all looked perfect. but the book is soooo boring, after reaching a long way into the book you waste your time on artists rooms and clubs!! really! then when we finally start, it is like for ever, the process seems so slow... the book ofcourse is full of the writers own sketches which might not appeal to every one. what you might find here, at this price, you'll find for sure in more cheaper and more focused more useful books. i wouldn't recommend it personally.
The Essential Tutorial for Improving Your Renderings.......2000-08-13
Chip Sulivan's step by step instruction guides the reader to see the underlying structure in each of his renderings. This insight reviels an efficient method of organizing profesional quality landscape plans. His more informal sketchs show how to quickly get a feel for site illustration.
As a landscape design professional, I recomend this book to my peers and to those new to rendering the landscape. I am confident that after studying this text, anyone would be able to better comunicate their designs.

The greatest landscape photographer of all time!.......2001-04-22
When I look at a photograph done by Paul Caponigro I feel inspired and moved by what the image says to me. He has a way was translating a mood and feeling through his choice of subject matter and point of view. In many instances he can make the natural world speak and motion towards a sensibility that can create many emotions. There is a meditative atmosphere to his prints and choice of subject matter that in many ways invokes a mythic or gothic feeling. Caponigro's work whether it be a traditional landscape or a created still life continues to catch the eye of whoever sees it. He is an artist of the finest caliber who does what he loves and does as he likes. Although his work is obviously very personal to him, he is willing to share with all his viewers his beliefs and views of the world as he sees it. I often look at his work and feel honored that he is willing to share a special place in the world that he has discovered. There is little doubt that he does his photographs for other people to enjoy, not just himself. Paul Caponigro shows us the world like no other person can, he adds mystery and beauty to all kinds of places both natural and man made. Over the past forty-five years Caponigro has defined what it means to truly become a landscape artist. The work he has done has classified itself in a realm all by itself and has given other landscape lovers a place to strive to. His dedication to the craft of photography shows clearly in all the work he produces, and in many ways he has shown us the natural world as it has never been shown before.

Master comic illustrator Steven Appleby peers deep into the feline soul.
They say every cat has nine lives, and Jim the dysfunctional cat is no exception. Steven Appleby's new book tells the story of one very challenged cat and the trials and tribulations of living with him. Based on many years spent observing and despairing of the real Jim, the book devotes one gruesome (and hilarious) chapter to each of Jim's lives. It also explores the unfathomable nature of cats in general and the trauma of sharing your life with them.
Cat lovers will be charmed. Cat haters will have all their suspicions confirmed.

Book Description
Driving dog teams through the icy heart of a northern winter, bracing against the flimsy bulkhead of a frail ship battered by storms, removing an appendix on a heaving vessel while bluebottle flies buzz overhead--hard training for a future Lieutenant-Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Such conditions were routine, however, for the pioneering doctors of Sir Wilfrid Grenfell's medical mission. Tony Paddon here recounts the story of his remarkable life--from his Labrador childhood to his time in the RCN during World War Two and his service as a Grenfell doctor operating out of St. Anthony, Newfoundland and North West River, Labrador. Vivid and emotionally powerful, Paddon's book recounts his travels throughout the region by boat, bush plane and dog team, in service of isolated and desperate patients, native and non-native alike.
The fascinating story of a determined and able man, Labrador Doctor recreates a life lived in a primitive, forbidding and astonishingly beautiful northern landscape.

Lost in the darkness of death .......2005-05-27
Ernie Spencer is undoubtedly a Marine's Marine. Semper Fi...do or die...a lean, mean, green killing machine. On that note, "Welcome to Vietnam, Macho Man: Reflections of a Khe Sanh Vet," is an extremely painful confessional of a Marine grunt lost in the darkness of death. As much as Spencer boasts of his "Macho," makeup...one thing is perfectly clear in the last 95 pages of this sleek compact book...Marines were totally trapped in Khe Sahn for 77-days with terrifying emotional consequences.
"Skipper," as his enlisted Marines call him writes an unsanitized account of his 1967-68 tour of duty in Vietnam as Commanding Officer of Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment. His language is no-nonsense Marine Corps vernacular. Some of you will certainly consider it obscene...but do not let it scare you off...this book is filled with powerful descriptions of violence and pain...and in time...you will be numb to the profanity.
Essentially, this book is about a stoic, brave, irreverent, combat Marine who is the supreme "Macho." Ultimately however, the reader will discover that being "Macho," is also about being afraid and testing the limits of raw human suffering. Overall this book is essential reading for all interested in understanding the Marine warrior mentality during a dark period of the Vietnam War. Additionally, it is a comprehensive accounting of the day-to-day combat experience of the Marine Corps infantry grunt. On the downside, this book could use a good map to aid in understanding important events in the narrative. Highly recommended.
Bert Ruiz
This Is The Way It Was.......2003-10-10
If you really want to know what the toughest fighting in Vietnam was like and how it felt to the commander of a Company of Marines take a ride with the Macho Man. All of the insanity, horror and humor that are combined in the experience of combat are brilliantly displayed in Ernie Spencer's book.
Spencer was a Commander that others looked to for the tough combat jobs and we need to thank him, and his Marines, for that, but also for this great book.
Don't miss it.
A Must Read for Family Members of a Combat Veteran.......2003-06-22
My husband is a combat veteran who served as a sergeant in the Marine Corps during the 77-Day Siege of the Khe Sanh Combat Base in Vietnam. Ernest Spencer's book gave me the opportunity to learn more about what my husband experienced during that terrible siege.
Welcome to Vietnam, Macho Man put me right there at the Khe Sanh Combat Base. I was on patrol, in the bunkers, and suffering the losses. The language is a bit rough but the message is pure. Ernest Spencer chronicles his experiences as a Marine Corps captain living and dying with our husbands, brothers and sons.
If you ever wondered what life was really like and I mean truthfully, Spencer's book gives an account of daily life in the business of war--sometimes funny, sometimes frustrating, and many times heart breaking. Spencer tells us what they saw, how they felt and how they managed a reality that was so totally different from their expectations
Certainly, Welcome to Vietnam, Macho Man--Reflections of a Vietnam Vet is the author's personal catharsis erupting from the stupidity and senseless loss of so many young Marines. As I read the book, I knew it was the real deal. No exaggerated heroics or glamorized fiction fabricated to enhance the author's persona.
I highly recommend this book to any family member of a combat vet seeking the truth about the war in Vietnam or the siege of the Khe Sanh Combat Base.

"THE"... Vietnam book.......2005-07-04
I have always felt that this is "The" Vietnam book. The author delivers the horror of combat into the lap of the reader...he holds no punches, his prose is said to be profane, yet I do not construe it as such....it is merely reality. The use of vivid descriptiveness is abundant yet not overdone. The responsibility of commanding a rifle company of Marines on a lonely hill outpost in the very worst venue of the war is brought to light and presented in a brilliant fashion in metaphor form..."his hill" is in actuality a mistress that he garnishes and bejewels with barbed wire and anti personel mines...
I could go on and on but won't, realizing my redundantcy, I will just say that this is perhaps the best of all books to emerge from the conflict.
author of ...Eye of the Tiger
The Way it REALLY Was.......2003-06-03
Ernie Spencer is one of the best Company Commanders the USMC has had. Macho Man is a trip through the worst of the war in Vietnam conucted by an a fine writer who is able to capture the ordinary life of a grunt, combat and the tensions that war places on young men. This no self congratulatory memoir. This comes from the heart. A ride with the "Macho Man" is a unique and penetrating experience.
Want to see what you missed?.......2002-02-09
For every individual boomer who always wondered what it would have been like over there, read this book. It will take you step by step as if you, yourself were there. It is fascinating and well written. In fact, I don't believe I've read books in fractions that cover every facet of what happened to the 26th Marines MEU. What their thoughts were, how they felt, and how isolated we really were.
The wall of silence.......2001-12-14
I came across this book, in a stand of penny-novels, in a 24/7 convenience shop, sometime round-about 1990.
It impressed me deeply.
Like Spencer, I am a Catholic.
Reviewers elsewhere have said that it should be required reading for junior officers.
I think that it should be mandatory reading for popes, cardinals, bishops and all of the rest of the catholic corporate executives - who stayed home, who avoided the reality of it all.
The wrong catholics got sent to see and experience the horror and the evil, - and to understand how they'd been betrayed by the sky-pilots.
These things should have been experienced by those at the very top of the Church heirarchy; not just those at the very bottom.
Spencer makes it quite clear that this betrayal is what has driven him to write a book, to share his experience, to try to educate those who saw nothing of it, and who simply dismiss what one tries to say - and who just roll along to church on Sunday as if it all never happened.
As if no women and kids were ever napalmed , no soldier ever had his body blown apart - or, if they did happen to be, then that had nothing whatsoever to do with rolling along to church on Sunday.
No nonsense -- Must read.......1999-09-15
CNN specials on the siege at Khe Sanh provoked my interest in this battle and that generation of young Veterans. Spencer's book is a well written, no-nonsense read on a young Marine Lt.'s mental and physical survival during his year at Khe Sanh. Humorous and thought provoking, it dispels any glamour or John Wayne attitudes one might have about war. Those prior service will enjoy his descriptions of fellow services and situations. A fast and at times humorous read. Couldn't put the book down.

Salim Ali's association with the Bombay Natural History Society started when as a young child intrigued by the patch of yellow on the throat of a sparrow he had shot with his airgun, someone suggested he visit the Society to seek an explanation. The title of this commemorative volume,
Petronia, is the generic name of the yellow-throated sparrow which started Salim Ali on his ornithological quest. It is comprised of articles on ornithology by Salam Ali's friends, colleagues, and students.
