5 out of 5 stars Get Pictures!.......2007-08-24

This book has a lot of interesting info and the pictures are amazing! The ONLY problem that I have with the book is that some of the numbers for the B&Bs and museums are no longer working. Great job otherwise!

4 out of 5 stars Glad I have this book scince the houses are probably gone.......2005-09-01

This is a beautiful book and all the more important in the light of recent events. The copy is repetitive and dry but the pictures are lovely. I would have appreciated more info on the architecture and history of the times these homes were built.

        Book Description

The Glass Industry in Sandwich is a five volume series of books presenting a factual account of glass produced by the glass companies that were located in Sandwich, Massachusetts, between 1825 and 1922. Included are color photos of over 2300 Sandwich glass objects that have been thoroughly researched and authenticated by Sandwich glass experts Raymond E. Barlow and Joan E. Kaiser, who have worked together for twenty-two years. Recognized by the antiques industry as the "Bible" in its field, this magnificent set of books has become a trusted reference used by glass curators of major museums as well as by early American glass collectors, antiques dealers and auctioneers. Each photo is accompanied by dimensions, approximate time of production, and captions that detail methods of manufacture and sources of documentation. Comparisons are made between objects manufactured in Sandwich glass houses and objects produced in foreign and other American factories. Cutware, a General Assortment represents a specialized portion of the fifth and final volume. It features four complete chapters on cut, engraved, and etched glass; an assortment of household and commercial ware; bottles; and a supplement to previously published guides.

Comparisons are made between objects manufactured in Sandwich glass houses and objects produced in foreign and other American factories. This final volume contains 283 color photos of a variety of objects, from very fine cut and engraved ware to household, commercial, and scientific necessities that came under the heading of "general assortment" when they were marketed in the 1800's. A supplement to Volumes One, Two, Three and Four features objects that were not available for study at the time the books were written. A roster of 1500 employees and their occupations is included as an aid to documentation. There are still bargains to be had for as little as $10 as illustrated by the little-known or previously undocumented pieces pictured in this volume. Extremely rare articles have increased in value to as much as $35,000. Authorities Raymond E. Barlow and Joan E. Kaiser present to you a compendium of glass identifiable and collectable as Sandwich glass. A price guide is available that lists prices for each piece in clear and assorted colors, and updates the prices listed in previously published Barlow-Kaiser price guides.

5 out of 5 stars THE "BIBLE" FOR EARLY LIGHTING COLLECTORS.......2001-08-15

This is a superb tome, neatly documenting the history of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company's beginnings, struggles, and successes, as well as providing reference on glass whale-oil and burning-fluid devices. Photographs are many and clear, details amply given on the Company's products of the time, and pointers offered throughout on recognition between Boston and Sandwich items, other manufacturer's products, and reproductions. Any student, collector, or devotee of early lighting devices should own this volume.

          Book Description

A book that will guide you when you are in the process of buying or appraising Sandwich glass is the most important tool you can own. This book is one of a series of guide books that describes every type of glass that was produced in Sandwich, Massachusetts. It uses the original plates of glass photos and the identification numbers form Volume 3 of The Glass Industry in Sandwich, a larger book by the same authors. (Volumes 3 and 4 are available, and Volumes 1 and 2 are in preparation.) This makes cross reference much easier. In order to make this series of guides compact and light in weight, the photos from Volume 3 have been divided into two smaller guides. This one contains the complete chapters on vases, colognes and stoppers. Another guide, availabe now, contains witch balls, covered containers, toys (miniatures) and the creations of Nicholas Lutz. The extensive categorization and illustration of Sandwich glass should make this guide valuable for field use. The prices in this guide reflect the market at the time of publication. They will be periodically updated in a separate price guide available from the publishers.

                        Book Description

Forty years ago, writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby created a team of adventurers like no other that had come before. Unlike previous groups of stone-jawed super heroes who got along perfectly in their pursuit of liberty and justice, the Fantastic Four bickered, argued, and fought among themselves - just like a real family. Their continued adventures around the world, into outer space, and throughout uncharted dimensions have pushed the limits of the Marvel Universe, consistently challenging readers' perceptions of what a comic book could be.

Starting and ending on the anniversary of her son Nicholas's diagnosis, Jennifer Overton uses key calendar events in the year to illustrate the roller coaster of emotions that accompany life with Nicholas. Written with sensitivity and lightness of touch, the book does not flinch from describing the grief involved in parenting an autistic child, yet the overall sense is one of joy in Nicholas's accomplishments. Entertaining and insightful, parents and professionals alike will reach for this empathic book, which includes a variety of easy to read vignettes ranging from reflection, description, poetry, and a quiz, to short play texts which bring alive the life of the participants.

5 out of 5 stars Once in Love With Nic..........2004-07-11

Jennifer Overton, calling on her extraordinary resources as a wife, mother, educator, actor and author, has produced a work of compelling intimacy and irresistible charm.

The story of Nic--- a bright and beautiful boy who is diagnosed austistic--- is told with unflinching honesty and palpable love. Jennifer and her husband David move mountains to try to provide the best for their son, while making sure his unique perspective isn't crushed by well-meaning mainstreamers.

The devices of poetry, art, screenplay, journal, and stage play are enlisted to make Nic's world accessible even to those who have never had an autistic child in his or her life--- and the ride is exhilarating!

This book is luminous and painful and funny and profound--- and yet you feel as if you are sitting in Jennifer's kitchen, listening to it all as Nicholas walks in and out of the room. Go ahead--- fall in love with him!

                              5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down!.......2004-07-11

I was taken into a new family last week: The Overtons of Nova Scotia. That is how familiar and real this book about living with an autistic child is--- Jennifer Overton draws you in with the story of her very human reaction to a superhuman challenge.

She and her husband David have one child, and they eventually learn that Nic is autistic. Any expectations they have had for their son now have to be re-drawn in the colours of the austistic spectrum, and it is not an easy task.

Nic's mind is unrelentingly detailed, literal, specific. Shapes and numbers are easy--- feelings and approximations send him spiraling into panic. But there is great humour here as well, and absolutely fascinating looks into an autistic mind and how it works.

Jennifer uses a lattice of holidays and famiy celebrations to catch and contain the wild tendrils of Nic's energy and observations, and the device is perfect for the construction of this "family album." The letters to her son that begin and end the book are so full of pride and love that you cannot help the tears that come with reading them.

In the end you realize you have become part of the famliy, and that Nic Overton is just an extraordinary young boy with equally extraordinary parents.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Different Look at Autism.......2004-07-11

I didn't expect to laugh so much. I know autism is a serious subject and that there is grief and pain involved for the parents. Those are included here, touched on, lightly. The trip to Peggy's Cove, for example, showed the heartache of this mother of an only child. But Jennifer Overton's book "Snapshots of Autism" is really a song for her beautiful son, and parts of it are amazingly funny. I think that's what makes this book so real and so touching.

Jennifer does discuss Lovaas and ABA and various other kinds of teaching and dietary theories in her search for just the right things to make Nic's life easier. But mostly this book is about the *inside* of their family--- the real deal, the gut-level day-to-day life with an autistic child. Shattered dreams replaced slowly with new hopes. The celebration of small triumphs. Laughter. And a lot of love.

                              This is an amazing book!

5 out of 5 stars The Long and Winding Road.......2004-07-11

Jennifer Overton's "Snapshots of Autism" shines with honesty, humour, pain, and love. This extraordinarily intimate and accessible book draws you into the Overton's life with their son, Nicholas, and spins you through the cycles of holidays and birthdays and special occasions experienced through the filter of autism. I promise you'll never look at Hallowe'en the same way again!

You'll cheer Jennifer and David's amazing energy and commitment in the face of an indifferent and political medical system as they fight for the best learning environment for their only child. But mostly you'll fall in love with Nic, with his razor-sharp mind and his terrible fears, with the absolute purity of his life.

This book is not only a source of information and support for those parents who will recognize the grief, the rage, the despair, the courage and the pride that Jennifer and David experience, it is also a love letter to Nic. Any son of any parents would be forever grateful for this album, and you'll be very glad to share it.

The Spanish conquest of Mexico was the most remarkable military expedition in history, and in achieving it, Hernan Cortes proved himself as one of the greatest generals of all time. This book explains the background of the Aztec Empire and of the Spanish presence in Mexico. It describes the lives of the Aztecs in their glittering capital and of the Europeans who learned to adapt and survive in an alien and often dangerous world. The invasion was a war between civilizations, pitting the fatalism and obsessive ritual of the Aztecs against soldiers fighting for riches, their lives, and eventually their souls.

If only the Spaniards had been Anglosaxons, and Mexico spoke English today, we would have some great epic films to behold now. But poor race that we are, we haven't dared to make the first film; neither can the Mexicans, for that matter. (We, the West, have given up the Cross again, and are more prone to immolate OURSELVES on some sacrificial altar than try to find anything worth fighting for).

Now to the book. This is a great overview, succint and accessible to everybody. A pleasure to read, being so difficult to condense what other books took so many pages, sparsed with some very helpful and necessary maps and illustrations.

This book is titled 'Invasion', but I don't quite agree with its title, since this part of the conquest, the invasion, was fundamentally the key part of the whole process of conquest and subjugation of this area of America. It may be a condescension to PC readers but it is nothing but symbolical, since the story is what it was, and you can't change that. However, once that is said, there are no more hints of this type inside. The author simply summarizes the facts in a most reader-friendly way. He shows us the background of both peoples involved in this clash of civilizations, their beliefs, dreams and fears; in one word: what kind of people they were, without being judgemental.

Hernán Cortés was an extraordinary man.

One interesting exceprt: "Tlaxcala (one of the Mexican nations who fought alongside Cortés, against the Aztecs) remained faithful to the end, and throughout the colonial period (when Spaniards really messed it up, and Cortés being absent, the burocrats and carpetbaggers moved in) was described in Spanish sources as 'most loyal'. This has earned the modern city and state the disdain of other parts of Mexico, particularly Mexico City, where citizens contend that the country was betrayed by Tlaxcala. Modern Tlaxcalans, however, are equally touchy about their reasons for siding with Cortés, and are quick to point out all the grievances their country had with Aztec Mexico."

And this important piece of information: "To the very end, they (the Aztecs) were self-conscious of the fact that they were foreigners ... they believed that just as they had conquered and subjugated the natives, so others might conquer and subjugate them." Which certainly happened.

And: "Whatever the atrocities for which the Castilians may be blamed in the five centuries cince the Conquest, their acts paled in comparison to those of their Tlaxcalan allies. Centuries of hate and the basic viciousness of Mesoamerican warfare combined in a violence that appaled even Cortés himself." Cortés writes to the king of Spain: "I had posted Spaniards in every street, so that when the people began to come (to surrender) they might prevent our allies from killing those wretched people, whose numbers were uncountable. I also told the captains of our allies that on no account should any of those people be slain; but there were som many that we could not prevent more than fifteen thousand being killed and sacrificed (by the Tlaxcalans) that day."

Cuauhtémoc -the last Aztec emperor- was not a hero. He was the last tyrant of an imperialist and foreign nation. Of all the nations that dwelt in Mesoamerica in those years, the Aztecs (and they were always self-conscious of it) were as foreign as the Spaniards could be.

I recommend also the book "The Conquest of Darkness" by Warren Carroll. Very succint account of the same story but focusing more on the cultural and religious backgrounds of both Spaniards and Aztecs. Both these books complement each other perfectly. Read them. History is more relevant today than anytime before, lest we repeat our errors. Paradoxically, today, when I say "we", I mean the Aztecs. That's what our western civilization has become. Lord Jesus, your Kingdom come.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable window into a flamboyant life.......2004-10-11

Benjamin Disraeli has long been a subject of fascination for many. Born to a family of Sephardic Jews, he rose from an unorthodox background to become prime minister of Great Britain and one of the dominant politicians of the Victorian age. His climb to the top of the "greasy pole" was a difficult one, though, and nowhere is this better illustrated than in the letters he wrote. Full of wit and color, they are an indispensable resource for people seeking to understand Disraeli's life and career.

While much of his correspondence has been printed before (particularly in Monypenny and Buckle's classic six-volume biography of Disraeli), this is the inaugural volume of an effort to publish every surviving letter Disraeli ever wrote. Starting with a brief note to his mother that Disraeli wrote when he was 11, the letters printed here capture a flamboyant young man eager to make his mark on the world yet uncertain as to how to make it. Articled as a solicitor, he soon found the work uncongenial and turned to his pen, writing pamphlets promoting questionable South American mining companies that soon collapsed. This loss of his investments in those companies, coupled with the collapse of a newspaper he started, soon left Disraeli in a state of indebtedness that would long plague his life and occupy much of his correspondence.

With creditors persistently hounding him, Disraeli began his career as a novelist in the hope that he could write his way out of his indebtedness. While his novels enjoyed modest success, they failed to bring in the income he needed to pay his mounting debts. The situation undoubtedly spurred his decision to enter Parliament (as MPs were immune from arrest), but his early attempts met with frustration. The collection ends with his last, failed attempt to run as an independent candidate and a growing association with the Conservative party, which would eventually provide the support he needed to win a seat in the House of Commons.

Disraeli's great strength as a writer was his descriptive powers, which are in full evidence in the correspondence collected here. Some of his best letters were written to friends and family during his tour of the Mediterranean in 1830-1, which contain evocative accounts of the places he visited. Adding to our understanding of the people and events described in these letters is the superb editorial work, which allows the reader to trace nearly every detail of his correspondence. The result is a first-rate source for one of the leading figures of 19th century Britain and an essential book for anybody seeking to better understand the man and his times.

Twenty-second century historians will note that a new World War began on 9/11/2001. In reality, it began much earlier. Competing value systems and the lust for natural resources will precipitate an inevitable clash of civilizations. Currently, we face elusive foes-foes who play by other rules-and in fact, we are already engaged in brutal, truly asymmetric conflict with varied forms of fighting; terrorism is but an isolated part. The increasing number of polymorphic hostilities requires revolutionary and unconventional responses. Special operations are the norm. Nanoscale, biological, and digital technologies have transformed how we fight future wars. Tactical lasers that zap pinpoint targets at twenty kilometers are being developed, as is the millimeter-wave Active Denial System that causes intense pain to those exposed. The "Mother of all Bombs" has been dropped, as have thermobaric weapons that destroy caves and bunkers. Robots roam the battlefield while exotic sensors catalogue nearly every facet of our lives. Paralyzing electrical shock weapons are in the hands of police. Even phasers on stun are closer than you think. Winning the War details the technologies and concepts necessary to ultimately determine the outcome of this global conflict. Via realistic scenarios from recovering tourists kidnapped by terrorists, to bringing down drug cartels in the Amazon, and even preventing Armageddon in the Middle East, Winning the War provides an insider's view into how these futuristic weapons will be used and into the complexities of modern warfare. Bold and controversial measures are prescribed, including the essential nature of absolute domination of space. Winning the War makes clear that drastic and innovative actions will be necessary to ensure our national survival.

                              2 out of 5 stars Disjointed .......2006-08-23

This is really two books; the first is about military technology and the second is on policy in the war on Terrorism. Alexander does a pretty good job of presenting an overview of technology (lethal and non-lethal) currently under development for each of the military services (chap 1-3). Alexander is heavily involved in non-lethal weapons development, but does a balanced job of reviewing all tech.

Although his book is about military tech, he repeatedly emphasizes that tech is not enough. Unfortunately the book fails with the last six chapters when he moves away from the tech and into policy. Part 3 is the weakest (chap 10-12) where Alexander discusses ways to cut support to terrorists which, at a macro-level, are not new (i.e. cut off their funding), and are even radical (i.e. legalize drugs). He also goes into odd policy discussions on the press and assasination.

The real disappointment comes when you realize that after all his discussions and expertise on the use of tech, he doesn't tie up a way ahead or how to link the tech with non-technical factors. None of his recommendations or conclutions go into how, why, or where we need to go with tech and its integration into doctrine, tactics, and strategy. His scenarios only present glimpses and no programs.

Col. Alexander's Winning the War: Advanced Weapons, Strategies, and Concepts for the Post-911 World is a painful read, but the very pain is testimony to the gravity of the U.S. security/defense situation and his accurate depiction of what needs to be changed. Like any good intelligence officer, he does not alter the facts, but merely illuminates them with enlightened speculation. "...weak democracies may actually exacerbate the potential for regional instability. In practice, democracy is very complex and requires experience gained through time and trial. It cannot be bestowed on emerging societies and expected to be successful. We simply must stop anticipating that other countries will act according to the American model. " p. 247.

By admitting that things are not `all right', but that there are only problems waiting for solution, we can move onto what may be reasonable and realistic remedies to the crisis at hand. "In the United States we simply do not comprehend the importance of history and consistently focus on near-term solutions based on symptoms. Rarely do we attempt to understand causal relationships. If the problem can't be stated in a twenty-second sound bite, we just forget about it." P 183.

Policy is dependent on intelligence, and the later has been used by the U.S. regularly, though hesitatingly and inconsistently, over the years. For the U.S., a great dilemma arises when the information is gathered and kept subordinate to political correctness and expediency, due to the bureaucratic process' dedication to transparency, impartiality and the rule of law. The tension between `special operations' mentality and openness, between ends and means, makes this study of the problem not only interesting academically, but also potentially useful in practice. "The three best methods to determine the likelihood that an active terrorist is attempting to board a flight are profiling, profiling, and profiling." P. 191. "Now the War on Terror has brought a new focus on assassination as an implement of conflict...there is only one way to deal with terrorists-you kill them." Pp. 198-199.

The solutions depicted throughout various vignettes are sound and practical, one of which pertains to ..." revamping the military personnel system. Skilled retirees abounded, most willing to be recalled to fight if an urgent need existed. There was no need to have members of the military serve twenty years consecutively. Over the decades a small number of reservists had proven that intermittent periods on extended active duty could be effective and they could keep up with their counterparts. A strategic response would be to move retirees into homeland security positions and push active-duty personnel into fielded forces abroad." P. 153 "...we should develop a unified organization that meets today's requirements. The old system is anachronistic." P. 251.

                              Excellent...this is the wake-up call.

5 out of 5 stars Out-of-the-box thinking for "Winning The War.".......2003-09-15

Do you ever get the sneaking feeling that we are going about this "War on Terror" all wrong? Then read further as Colonel John Alexander knows of what he speaks and he brings it all to bear here in Winning The War.

"World War X" is upon us and Alexander suspects that we will fail to win it promptly, if ever. He sees the scope of the problem and our political leaders (evidenced by results to date) demonstrably do not. We do have the means to win but lack the ken and the will. We are fighting an asymmetric 21st century war with a 20th century mindset.

The Colonel has expertise in the strategy, operations and tactics of war and educates us on the mix of sensors, lethal and non-lethal weapons that are available now and those that are coming soon. He then shows us in several scenarios how these elements can be used together successfully not only to win battles but also to save lives.

He will surprise some with his suggestions on how to cut-off funding for this enemy. No political sacred cows for Alexander as he exposes what must be done and why. Winning this war as outlined by him will make for some strange political bedfellows indeed.

Alexander sees further than most as he covers some potentially useful technologies that are truly cutting-edge. He has been in the insiders position to know about these esoterica first-hand and describes how they potentially offer huge returns in this war and for society in general.

Winning The War delivers a comprehensive appraisal of the current situation and how to get out of this mess that appears to get worst by the week. This, to a society sorely in need of hearing more than ideological aphorisms from our leaders and politically-based rhetoric from pundits of the left and right.

Most refreshing for me was the out-of-the-box thinking throughout the book. Cynics may discount some of his suggestions with a "We could never do that!"-attitude. Know that Alexander is not intellectualizing, one need only look at his background to know that he has lived, pushing the boundaries of human potential. He knows that each of us is capable of more than we know and so is our society as a whole if we just take the time to examine. Start with this book.

A must read for all freethinkers.

4 out of 5 stars Brutal and honest.......2003-08-07

Unflinching analysis of the War Against Islamic Fundamentalism, mislabeled as War on Terror for reasons of political correctness. John Alexander is entirely right in that the tactics necessary to win this war are much too brutal for most Americans to stomach - until enough terror acts occur on the US soil to turn public opinion around. What Alexander does not seem to consider (and the reason I give 4 stars) is that Islamic fundamentalists, being aware of American strengths and weaknesses, may deliberately avoid striking at US homeland and instead concentrate on destabilizing their own countries. That way some Islamic states may fall to fundamentalism without ever provoking US and the rest of Western world out of its self-imposed restraints. Recent attacks in Indonesia certainly fit this pattern.
