Book Description
Originally devised as a guide for converting from imperial to metric measurements, 'The Metric Handbook' has since been totally transformed into a major international handbook of planning and design data. The second edition has been completely updated, with most chapters being totally rewritten, to meet the needs of the modern designer.
The book contains nearly 50 chapters dealing with all the principal building types from airports, factories and warehouses, offices shops and hospitals, to schools, religious buildings and libraries. For each building type 'The Metric Handbook' gives the basic design requirements and all the principal dimensional data.
Several chapters deal with general aspects of building such as materials, lighting, acoustics and tropical design. There are also sections on general design data, including details of human dimensions and space requirements.
It is a unique authoritative reference for solving everyday planning problems. In its various editions it has sold over 100,000 copies worldwide, and continues to be a reference work belonging on every design office desk or drawing board.
* THE source of information to solve your everyday planning problems
* Easy to use provider of all data needed for the job
* Keeps you up to date with all the latest information

Make room for this on your bookshelf.......2007-06-11
I am an Architect dealing with planning and early stages of projects. This book is concise, clear and comprehensive and I don't know what I would do without it. I had a well-used and dog-eared copy from the original edition of 1979 and have just updated to the current edition. The information is easy to find, not over-detailed and still seems to be under the control of one person. Highly recommended and good value.
Bad print quality.......2007-06-08
A valuable and a must have book...but print and paper quality is not worth...it is very much like as if phocopied and binded...

Great Reference.......2005-12-28
I'm a graduate design architect, and i've been looking for a design standards reference. I came across this book, i've never heard about it before, as i was more familiar with Time Saver. But i was surprised by how good this book is and how sufficient the information contained is for all stages of design.
The Time Saver Book might be more comprehensive in some aspects and may also have more examples of different building types. But the price of this book is very good compared to the time saver, which costs much more. I definitely recommend this book...
dont buy this software.......2000-07-08
this cd cost 250 dollars, it is a plug-in program for autocad. it creats a new toolbar for autocad users to find images. However, i find this toolbar is NOT frinedly to use and it is hard to find images, and this software can't work in autocad 2000, it just can work with the outdate autocad (r13,R14). Further, this software not ever cover different size of common doors and windows. EDITOR, your CAD-library is not powerful enough. I personally believe this software is only worth 50 dollars.
CRITICISM.......2000-06-29
I have been told that there was a review that said that there were errors in the book. This is certainly so, I should know, I am the editor! No reference book as comprehensive as this will ever be perfect. However, if you, the customer, finds one of these, please tell me. My e-mail address is David_Adler@compuserve.com. Thank you.

Book Description
Fashion photography and fashion drawing are not only images of creation, but creations in and of themselves--productions of beauty, of outfit, and of lifestyle. They mediate images of fashion's fast trade which, as visual statements, are long-lasting, extending well beyond the day. In Unified Message, photographers and draftsmen carry on an unusual dialogue. Pictures by three of the most important fashion photographers of our time-- Peter Lindbergh, Paolo Roversi, and Alexei Hay--are questioned, commented on, and extended by three fashion illustrators of international renown--Mats Gustafson, Ruben Toledo, and Fran ois Berthoud. The radiating power of fashion is here revealed in the interplay of their respective images.

THE FORECAST IS HEATING UP!.......2005-08-20
This is an odd story about the most peculiar woman to ever grace a manga page. Keiko is the weather woman for a floundering Japanese TV station, but she soon hits upon a formula that sends the ratings through the roof...she lifts her skirt and flashes her panties!
Now that takes talent!
The real quirkiness sets in about halfway through the story, as Keiko's manipulationns of the people at the station begin to backfire, and she is soon caught in an ever-tightening web of her own making.
This manga version isn't as light-hearted as the movie version. However, the strange characters and surreal setting of Japanese TV stations are certain to keep your interest.

On the surface, the increase of African American reporters in the media may signal that they have made significant gains in that arena. But as Professor Pamela Newkirk of New York University outlines in her valuable book Within the Veil, race is still an issue that blacks have to deal with. Riffing on W.E.B. Du Bois' use of "the veil" in his classic book The Souls of Black Folk, Newkirk writes: "Behind the obvious, albeit small, numerical gains, a wide and deep racial and cultural chasm still divides blacks and whites in the newsroom. Despite their heightened visibility, African-American journalists and their minority counterparts, woefully underrepresented in the industry and in news management, are far from integrated into newsroom culture." Charting the development of the black press with the publication of Freedman's Journal in 1827, Newkirk chronicles the endless struggle of blacks to challenge the racist stereotypes that permeate American thought. She details the ordeals of several blacks in the '60s who desegregated TV networks, the most well known example being the late Max Robinson, brother of civil rights leader Randall Robinson. There's also the case of the disgraced Washington Post reporter Janet Cooke, who had to give back her Pulitzer Prize for writing a false story, while white writers guilty of the same crime are given jobs elsewhere. Newkirk also highlights the pressures black reporters feel from their racial group to tell the truth about Afro-American life, which at times goes against what their white counterparts believe. Newkirk also examines Black Entertainment Television and Net Noir, an Internet company, and writes, "African-Americans must use the power of praise and punishment to call attention to the ways in which they are portrayed." --Eugene Holley Jr.
Book Description
Winner of the National Press Club Prize for Media Criticism.
"A compelling look at the power of the media from an award-winning journalist who fearlessly and passionately addresses critical issues confronting African-American journalists working for mainstream newspapers and magazines."
--Essence
"In her eloquent take on media Eurocentrism, Pamela Newkirk observes that anti-African exclusion very much characterizes the major media. . . . An hermeneutical tour-de-force."
--New York Amsterdam News
"Newkirk's account is well-grounded historically and anecdotally, and she mangaes to be both fair and accurate at a time when those values seem to have lost their luster in the profession"Kirkus

Thirty years ago, the Kerner Commission Report made national headlines by exposing the consistently biased coverage afforded African Americans in the mainstream media. While the report acted as a much ballyhooed wake-up call, the problems it identified have stubbornly persisted, despite the infusion of black and other racial minority journalists into the newsroom.
In
Within the Veil, Pamela Newkirk unmasks the ways in which race continues to influence reportage, both overtly and covertly. Newkirk charts a series of race-related conflicts at news organizations across the country, illustrating how African American journalists have influenced and been denied influence to the content, presentation, and very nature of news.
Through anecdotes culled from interviews with over 100 broadcast and print journalists, Newkirk exposes the trials and triumphs of African American journalists as they struggle in pursuit of more equitable coverage of racial minorities. She illuminates the agonizing dilemmas they face when writing stories critical of blacks, stories which force them to choose between journalistic integrity, their own advancement, and the almost certain enmity of the black community.
Within the Veil is a gripping front-line report on the continuing battle to integrate America's newsrooms and news coverage.

A Tough Read.......2002-01-08
This is a very thoughtful and provocative read. Depending upon where one sits, it may not be easy to stomach. It is sobering, nontheless. It created in me a cynicism about the media, and it's purpose and meaning as holders of a public trust.
Excellent.......2001-06-11
This is a must-read book about the ways race influences the news we read in the newspapers and see on television. Everyone who cares about race and the future of our country should read this book!

Extremely helpful genealogical tool........2000-06-12
Thanks to these volumes I was able obtain a great of information on my French-Canadian ancestors corroborating material I had found before and filling some missing blanks.
Our French Canadian Ancestors -- like good friends.......2000-01-07
"Our French-Canadian Ancestors" by Thomas J. Laforest is an excellent resource on the early French Canadian history. It includes genealogical information of the early settlers and a little about the lifestyle of about 20 different families. It's got a great historical reference about the King's Daughters. I was fortunate enough to find many connecting links to a family tree of my ancestors. Excellent resource to begin a collection of French Canadian information.
Personal profiles of French Canadian pioneers........1999-06-10
This series offers a very readable translation of the original French Canadian-language series, adding drawings, historical briefs and appendices that are especially of interest to American-born descendents of Quebec's pioneer families. For history buffs, this series also offers insights into the motivations of New France's immigrants and portrays highlights of daily life, social activities and civil actions among the colonists. Some of the profiles were prepared by family historians, who often wrote longer works on the same subject. My ancestor, Jean Le Brodeur, is featured in Chapter 13 by Clement Brodeur of Quebec. The information is valuable on its own merits and as a starting point for further research. Most French Canadian descendents are related to many of the persons portrayed in this series, due to the close-knit society and intermarriages among relatively few families. So several volumes may be of interest. This series extends general and specific knowledge of the Quebecois pioneers. - Gary Brodeu

Book Description
The Skyhawk first entered service with the US Navy almost 50 years ago. (First flew 22 June 1954) It is still in service with various US units and remains the backbone of many of the air forces of those countries to which it has been exported. It was originally conceived as a carrier-borne fighter bomber, but as the aircraft has evolved it has taken on other roles. It is renowned for its strength and survivability in combat.
This is an in-depth look at the design, production, evolution, operation and performance of the aircraft. It will also include firsthand accounts of flying the Skyhawk in action. It is written for those enthusiasts and historians who are seeking the ultimate reference.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best aircraft monographs ever.......2007-04-22
I bought this book after reading a review in the May/June 2007 Naval Aviation News. It is one of the finest single-aircraft monographs I have seen in a long while. The book is very inclusive of every air arm around the world which has used the Skyhawk and has equal coverage of development, production and operational history. The illustrations are of high quality, with many color photographs and numerous excellent color profiles. The tabular data on production history and surviving Skyhawks in the 21st century is very useful. This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in naval aviation history and the Skyhawk in particular.
Very good book, with a lot of details and information.......2006-01-30
I like books with engineering details, and this one is fairly good on that front. Also has a lot of information on the different deployments, as well as countries that have deployed the A-4.
wonderful monograph on a classic post-WWII warplane.......2005-08-05
This volume is one of the best and most complete monographs in a single volume on a post-WWII military jet. It is well written and misses no aspect of the Skyhawk's long and varied military career or the details of its engineering and operation with a multitude of air arms. The history starts in in the early 1950s and continues to virtually today. The descriptions of its superb design and build, that made the "Scooter" a favorite with pilots for 50 years, is all here. The book reads well, is informative and I found it free of noticeable mistakes. The artwork of 20 color profiles, in many of its various plumages, by Dave Windle, is amongst the best in this kind of volume anywhere. The many photos, primarily color, are also excellent. I highly recommend this book to all with an interest in post-War military aircraft or just fans of great airplanes.

Book Description
This book examines the ways in which the urban aristocratic Sundanese of West Java recall the rural past of their ancestors through performances of the tembang Sunda ensemble (voice, zithers, and bamboo flute). This is the first book on Indonesian music that focuses on a non-gamelan ensemble as well as the first book to highlight Sundanese cosmological and cultural practices through an examination of musical performance. It reveals some of the musical tensions and points of connection between men and women, rural people and urbanites, and the classes. Illustrated with photographs and brief musical examples, this book also includes a CD.

Book Description
Quadrature domains were singled out about 30 years ago by D. Aharonov and H.S. Shapiro in connection with an extremal problem in function theory. Since then, a series of coincidental discoveries put this class of planar domains at the center of crossroads of several quite independent mathematical theories, e.g., potential theory, Riemann surfaces, inverse problems, holomorphic partial differential equations, fluid mechanics, operator theory. The volume is devoted to recent advances in the theory of quadrature domains, illustrating well the multi-facet aspects of their nature. The book contains a large collection of open problems pertaining to the general theme of quadrature domains.
