Book Description
Each time the waters of the mighty Mississippi River overflow their banks, questions arise anew about the battle between "man" and "river." How can we prevent floods and the damage they inflict while maintaining navigational potential and protecting the river's ecology?
The design of the Mississippi and how it should proceed has long been a subject of controversy. What is missing from the discussion, say the authors of this extraordinary book, is an understanding of the representations of the Mississippi River. Landscape architect Anuradha Mathur and architect/planner Dilip da Cunha draw together an array of perspectives on the river and show how these different images have played a role in the process of designing and containing the river landscape. Analyzing maps, hydrographs, working models, drawings, photographs, government and media reports, paintings, and even folklore, Mathur and da Cunha consider what these representations of the river portray, what they leave out, and why that might be. With gorgeous original silk screen prints and a fine selection of maps, the book joins historic, scientific, engineering, and natural views of the river to create an entirely new portrait of the great Mississippi.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book for the beginner.......2006-06-18
I am an absolute beginner and knew nothing before I picked up this book, but found it easy to follow and a lot of fun. I spent as little as possible because it all adds up fast. Among the recommended supplies, I bought 2 round brushes, a bamboo brush, and a 3-inch hake, and got by fine without the others. There are 11 recommended paints for the projects. He describes the different paint grades (professional vs. student), and while professional are typically preferred, they are also more expensive. I was pleased with the results I achieved with the cheaper student grade paints and encouraged by the thought that they might be even better if I invest in better paints. All in all, I would highly recommend this book. You can start it without knowing a thing, and finish it excited about what you've achieved and the possibilities that lie ahead.
Book Description
With a palette of just 6 colors, complete novices will achieve maximum success with minimum frustration as they learn the art of watercolor painting. Organized in a lesson-by-lesson approach, and generously illustrated with color photographs, each chapter focuses on one or two skills. Step by step, painters will learn how to work with color; master washes; and depict landscapes, fruits, flowers and other still life objects.
Customer Reviews:
Step by Step.......2007-07-05
This book was very helpful to me because it is literally step by step. The first step is to buy your materials. Bill tells you which paper and which paints, etc. Then he goes through various exercises, such as creating a wash, mixing colors, painting a tree, painting a landscape, then painting still life. Each exercise is laid out step by step, including which colors to mix together to get the desired effect.
I am taking a class at the same time as reading this book, and I have found that this book has more information than what I am learning in the class. However, you must be patient to go through each exercise. I lost patience when I created a lumpy oak tree. I did create a really nice maple and pine tree, though. I am halfway through this book, and am looking forward to the rest of the exercises.
A wonderful first book in watercolor.......2004-12-29
This book is truly what it claims in the title...the absolute beginning. Whitsett speaks right to the new watercolor student and breaks things down in tiny steps to insure success. He begins with informing the student of the initial products needed. I found a convenient set of Winsor Newton Cotman Watercolors that had the exact colors he suggests. He tells which paper which I also found very reasonably (Canson). Then he starts with the terms, the color wheel and basic watercolor washes and techniques...both strokes and color mixing. An abundance of pictures illustrate each step and then "inspiration pictures" are given to show what the development of each introduced technique can lead to. I am thankful to have stumbled upon this as my first book in my art education. Note: The only step that is assumed is that the student can vaguely sketch.
Thanks Bill.......2003-10-22
I was fortunate enough to view this book and try some of its techniques before publication. The explainations of how to proceed with each step, accompainied by the author's own art, helps one to learn quickly and with great success. I am glad now to see it in print in order to continue with my studies. Bill is not only an excellent teacher but a highly accomplished artist.
Book Description
These superbly constructed exercises, step-by-step demonstrations, and critiques will prepare aspiring watercolorists—even absolute beginners—for a lifetime of artistic enjoyment. Conversational in style and thoroughly illustrated, this entertaining volume is the culmination of author Jeanette Robertson’s 12 years of teaching, and it’s designed to be just like her classroom sessions. Readers will feel she’s right there beside them, offering expert advice on selecting budget-friendly supplies; getting them started, brush stroke by brush stroke; helping them build a solid technical foundation; and providing simple solutions to understanding perspective and color values. Individual chapters focus on painting skies, creating still lifes, and working on location. Additionally, Robertson presents a selection of her own paintings, with commentary on why and how she created them.

Watercolor 101: Techniques for the Absolute Beginner.......2007-08-23
Excellent book used with instructor (the author). It explains the techniques you must observe and perform. It also gives many illustrations for guidance. I strongly recommend this book to the beginner.
Clear beginner lessons.......2007-07-25
As an art teacher, I was pleased with the easily explained techniques that I can use with beginning watercolors.
Book Description
Three professional artists explain all the basic watercolor techniques in this step-by-step guide containing all the information new artists need to get started painting. Television artist Alwyn Crawshaw demonstrates basic techniques including brushstrokes, color mixing, making objects look 3-D, depicting distance and foreground, painting simple buildings, and painting fruit, vegetables, flowers, skies, trees, landscapes, and coastlines. Lecturer and writer Sharon Finmark explains how to paint realistic figures, including scale and proportion, mixing convincing skin tones, painting from photographs, painting single figures, painting people in groups, and depicting movement and light. Painter and teacher Trevor Waugh demonstrates techniques for painting domestic, farmyard, and wild animals. Starting with simple shapes, Trevor takes new artists through the rudiments of 3-D shapes, tone and color, texture and pattern, individual animal features, and movement.
Book Description
Drawing on a broad foundation in the history of nineteenth-century French art, Richard Shiff offers an innovative interpretation of Cézanne's painting. He shows how Cézanne's style met the emerging criteria of a "technique of originality" and how it satisfied critics sympathetic to symbolism as well as to impressionism. Expanding his study of the interaction of Cézanne and his critics, Shiff considers the problem of modern art in general. He locates the core of modernism in a dialectic of making (technique) and finding (originality). Ultimately, Shiff provides not only clarifying accounts of impressionism and symbolism but of a modern classicism as well.
Customer Reviews:
Meticulously Dull.......2005-02-15
This book is probably a Phd dissertation. It spends a lot of time focused on sorting out trivial or outmoded arguments about Cezanne and how his art was created. All the while, the author offers little of any insight of his own other than his own highly equivocal attitude towards Cezanne. He obviously got bored writing this because Cezanne is a great and exciting artist but you would not know it from this author. Any doubts about what I am saying? Read the last paragraph of the book.
you've never known cezanne...and you never will........2004-09-28
The title of my review may cause you to think that I didn't like this book...on the contrary, Shiff provides such a sophisticated argument about evolution of Cézanne's painting through his development of the concepts "maker and finder". Maker is the artist that "discovers" a style and develops that style in his/her work. Finder is the artist looking for a style. (Obviously an incredibly reductive summary of the two terms). Shiff compellingly argues that Cézanne exists as both maker and finder. This book isn't a quick read...but anyone attempting to tackle such a complex artist as Cézanne, couldn't possibly write a simple, one-dimensional book. I will be using this book in my impressionism class this winter. Hats off to Professor Shiff...I've never seen anything better written on Cézanne.

"Sizzling cartoon tales of desperate men and women lost on a road of calamity and chaos." People who are into alternative comics or cartoons know that the really cool comic strips aren't in the Sunday papers; they're in the free alternative weekly papers. Troubletown is one such example: Lloyd Dangle's work on the strip is top notch. The art is simple and direct. The stories cut a nice slice through the melodrama of city life from the suits to the slackers. The collection Next Stop: Troubletown has a hip retro look to it, though it never seems dated. And speaking of hip, the introduction is by Zippy the Pinhead creator Bill Griffith.

Skeptic, Cynic, or Comic analyst?.......2005-02-20
Lloyd Dangle has an amazing ability to look at the world, particularly the political world and strip away the B S and reduce it to the essentials. It's always funny, but when you finish laughing, you'll probably feel that you see the issues more clearly.
Whether you are right, left, or in between, you can't help but appreciate Dangle's comic focus.

A Book for all generations........1999-12-08
Reading this fast-paced, humorous, rags-to-riches story was a treat for me -- a native Nevadan. But more than that it's a story of talent and old-fashioned gumption. Rollan is a self-effacing man who made it to the top without smashing all who met him on the way up. If anything, he brought all who were willing to come with him to the party of life. It's a wonderful gift for family and friends -- but be sure to keep a copy for yourself.

Growing up poor, a fisherman's son, in post World War II Turks and Caicos Islands.
Customer Reviews:
Growing up in the Turks and Caicos.......2006-07-29
This is an important look at what it was to grow up in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Mr. Palmer's recollections let us know what it was like before the Islands were developed for tourism. Charles Palmer allows us to see the Turks and Caicos Islanders move from a rural life into today's modern society. I recommend this book for the traveller who wants to know a lot more than where the best rum punch is served. If you're lucky, you may even meet Charles Palmer on the golf course.
Not a Travel Guide.......2005-07-04
I realize that folks at Amazon can't check all the books they sell, but perhaps a policy regarding content would be a good idea. I wanted a travel guide on the Turks and Caicos . This is nothing more than a collection of memories put to paper. NO , I did not read the whole book. I started reading it, but the level at which it is written did not intrest me. (That is as polite as I can be regarding this "book" ) I would not recommend this book.

Book Description
In Carrier Strike, critically acclaimed military historian Eric Hammel gives a blow-by-blow, edge-of-your-seat account of this crucial naval battle. Drawing on American and Japanese battle reports and the recollections of aviators and seamen who were there, Hammel recreates World War II's fourth carrier versus carrier battle, the battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in October 1942. Written in the heart-stopping style that Hammel's readers have come to expect, Carrier Strike offers the only up-to-date, up-close, in-depth look at the battle that cost Japan any hope of winning the war in the Pacific.
Customer Reviews:
Holds your interest from cover to cover.......2007-10-13
The subtitle of this 1999 work is "The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands." It is that for sure, but there is much more. The front half of the book provides a rather complete telling of the first few months of the Guadalcanal campaign and the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, followed by a thorough history of the Santa Cruz battle, which saw the loss of USS Hornet (CV-8). The book is actually drawn from a larger work by Hamel, "Guadalcanal: the Carrier Battles," published in 1987.
As a chronicler of naval air action, Hamel's style holds the reader's interest from cover to cover. For one thing, he is exceptionally thorough. You get the feeling that virtually every sortie in the three battles, on both sides, is described with about all of the specifics you can imagine. When a Zero slashes at a TBF menacing the Shokaku, we not only know everything about the three men in the TBF, but also the name, rank, squadron, and ship of the Zero pilot. When three Kates bore in on the Hornet, we know who is leading them and where his plane is in the formation. It's hard to imagine how Hamel managed that level of detail in his research, but it's all there.
For me, the main attraction of the book was its coverage of the USS Hornet between Midway and Santa Cruz. To my knowledge, there is only one book that focuses totally on that carrier, "The Ship That Held the Line" by Lisle Rose, and it has been panned rather severely by historians and veterans who know a lot about that carrier. Hamel's book seems to provide a much better history of CV-8, as evidenced by the opinions of some of its vets. A Hornet pilot (retired USN captain) sent the book to me with a strong endorsement, and another one told me that "at least I'm still alive at the end of this one," alluding to one of the many errors in the Rose book.
A good but unbalanced account.......2005-09-09
This book will leave the reader with a clear understanding of the progression of the battle as well as events that led up to it . For that alone this book merits four stars . Eric Hammel gave a thorough synopsis of the the events that led up to the actual battle . The weapons , logistics and even battle doctrine held by both the USN and the IJN at that time is explored . This prelude to the battle accounts for nearly half the book yet it doesn't get bogged down with insignificant details that can thwart the readers' interest .
Hammel presents the battle in such a manner that the outcome is not a foregone conclusion in spite of the fact that the events occured over sixty years ago .
The one flaw to this book is that while dealing with human drama as events unfolded for Americans , little is offered from the Japanese perspective . For example ; nothing is said of efforts to contain damage aboard the Shokaku after the American strike whereas almost every detail of the damaged Hornet and efforts to save the ship by it's crew are covered .
In spite of my critcism , the reader will have a good understanding of the events that led up to the battle , the battle itself as well as a decent epilogue to these events .
should be the definitive account of Santa Cruz.......2001-06-10
Eric Hammel's CARRIER STRIKE The Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, should be the definitive work on this, the last of the 4 major carrier battles of WWII. As the second of two volumes about the Guadalcanal/Eastern Solomons campaigns, CARRIER STRIKE carefully details the action in well researched form. In an almost minute-by-minute account, the clash of the two carrier task forces on Oct 26,1942 will leave you breathless. A fitting tribute to the brave warriors who gave their lives for the cause. A superb book, and a must have for those studying the campaigns in the Southern Pacific.

A true companion.......2005-03-19
Throughout my time at University studying European & International Politics I have constantly gone back to this book as a true companion for work on the Cold War, foreign policy etc. It provides factual and summarised information on the chronology of events 1945-1998. Though it doesn't offer detailed information on all events, it acts as an excellent reference point.

Book Description
Cryptosporidiosis is a parasitic disease that strikes humans and domestic animals, ranging from isolated occurrences to epidemics. Infection caused by this parasite can lead to enteric disease and other debilitating conditions that can be life-threatening in immunocompromised animals and humans. Increased recognition of the seriousness of cryptosporidiosis has aroused the concern of public health, medical, veterinary, and research communities. Cryptosporidium and Cryptosporidiosis is the only text to specifically address this disease-its diagnosis, epidemiology, waterborne events, prevention and treatment, immunity, biochemistry, cultivation, laboratory animal models, and molecular biology. This book summarizes data on taxonomy, life cycles, morphology, host species, and control methods of cryptosporidiosis. It addresses the latest industry trends-developing disinfectants, medications, and water purification methods-and also academic trends-diagnostics, immune responses, biochemistry, and molecular biology research.

Book Description
From the microscopic observation of infection to the widespread application of molecular techniques in taxonomy and epidemiology, to the genome sequencing of two major species and advances in biochemistry, phylogeny, and water treatment, new information on this fascinating genus continues to mount as we discover and utilize the latest scientific techniques and methods. Greatly revised and expanded to encompass the volume and scope of new material, this second edition of a highly acclaimed reference provides a comprehensive and up-to-date consolidation of data. Continuing to be the seminal work in the field, Cryptosporidium and Cryptosporidiosis, Second Edition covers every aspect involved in the study of these highly adaptable parasites from basic biology to the search for a vaccine. It introduces molecular biology by discussing recent discoveries in the genome, genetic regulation, and comparative genomics of several species. Contributions present new biochemical data including metabolism and the investigation of structural proteins as potential drug targets. The book details transmission dynamics and molecular epidemiology, molecular methods for detecting infection, sources of contamination in foodborne transmission, and outbreaks and governmental regulations concerning drinking water, recreational waters, and waste management. Chapters consider host immune responses, the histopathology and pathophysiology of infection in immunocompetent and immunocompromised humans, and the vast array of compounds tested for the prophylaxis and treatment of cryptosporidiosis in humans and animals. The specifics of disease presentation address several species including fish, reptiles, birds, wild animals, companion animals, and livestock. The final chapters define appropriate animal models for parasite propagation and research, and describe the cells and media most useful for in vitro techniques.

Book Description
In the relatively short period since
Cryptosporidium was recognised as a human pathogen, and that it could be transmitted in water as well as directly between animals and people, it has been the subject of intense investigations. Its status as an opportunistic pathogen, especially in AIDS patients, and the lack of effective anti-cryptosporidial drugs have served to emphasise the public health importance of this organism. This has to some extent overshadowed the fact that
Cryptosporidium is also an important pathogen of domestic animals and wildlife.
In recent years, the application of molecular biology and culture techniques have had an enormous impact on our understanding of the aetiological agents of cryptosporidial infections and our ability to study the causative agents in the laboratory. As a consequence, a wealth of information and novel data has been produced during the last 3-4 years, particularly in the areas of taxonomy, biology, pathogenesis, epidemiology - particularly zoonotic and water borne transmission, and treatment.
It is thus very timely to bring together in this book the international research community involved to review the major advances in research and identify the important research priorities for the future, thus enabling as wide an audience as possible to benefit from and share in this comprehensive look at
Cryptosporidium and cryptosporidiosis.
