4 out of 5 stars Cute book.......2007-01-10

I bought this for my dad for Christmas. It is cute and the pictures are well presented. Lots of interesting history and tales.

5 out of 5 stars Nature Calls.......2000-07-26

I picked up Nature Calls for my father. Let's just say he spends a lot of time in the privy. On the first pass through, the pictures were appealing - funny, curious and down right bizarre! Reading through the second time, I found the facts, stories and poetry to be truly inspiring. Who knew there was so much to learn about the outhouse! The necessary, the backhouse, the privy. The author has done a great job of recording this important part of our American history. I'll never look at a port-a-john in the same way again! I'll be picking up this book for all the men in my life.

          Book Description

Children need to be taught at a young age the importance of stewardship, but giving them financial advice that's too complex can overwhelm and discourage them. In Money Matters for Kids, financial author and teacher, Larry Burkett provides fun and creative tools to help children understand and apply the biblical concept of stewardship. Contains jokes, puzzles, and other fun activities and exercises that make it easy for parents to teach children godly money management principles.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Foundation for Young Children.......2005-10-26

My husband and I were looking for a book to help our children, ages 8 and 5, understand the concept and value of money. We had started an allowance but felt like they were more eager to spend the money than to care what it was spent on and when it was lost they didn't really care. We have since stopped the allowance and decided to go through this book first.

We feel that this book is a wonderful resource to teach Christian principles to children, such as stewardship (what we own is a gift from God and we need to take care of it), giving, being content, and spending wisely. I don't believe the book is geared toward teenagers, but instead toward the younger child. It is written in an engaging way, using a cat named Larry to tell stories and impress principles. Each chapter ends with a short Bible study as well. Both of my children have enjoyed and benefited from the content so far. I'd recommend it to anyone wanted to teach Biblical principles to their children regarding money.

1 out of 5 stars I wish I had read the description a little closer..........2002-11-10

This book has very little to do with money a very much to do with sending money to the church. I bought a copy for each of my girls, 16 and 18 years old, each of them very spiritual, and they were both very turned off by the "preachy" context of the book. In fact, the 18-year-old told me she felt like she learned nothing about money, and as for the spiritual side, there are better books for that as well. She was especially turned off by one passage that recommended one way of making more money is giving more to the church.

4 out of 5 stars Solid in the psychological issues surrounding money.......2002-03-01

We bought this book to help teach our 7 year old how to manage her money. Where the book met expectations were the areas of values and healthy ways to think of money : Money isn't ours. We're stewards of God's money and therefore, we should spend it wisely, etc.

Where it didn't meet expectations, is that it didn't really provide a sample plan for how to allocate resources. While certainly, the greatest issue in dealing with money is mental -- getting your head around the idea that you have to live within your means and that you don't have to have everything NOW or just because someone else has it -- there is also a need for concrete examples....Given the above problem, I would still recommend this book as something to work through with a child because those psychological issues about spending are significant enough that they can make the difference between a someday adult with healthy attitudes about money and someone who is in debt, unhappy yet still wanting MORE! In that respect, this book is aces.

This book had some very good information, but it's not a quick read. It gets kind of bogged down and my eyes started to glaze over with all the information. I much prefer Ellie Kay's new book called "Money Doesn't Grow on Trees." Ellie quotes Financial Parenting in her book and I can see where the information she got was good.

          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Biblicaly-based guidebook.......2000-07-23

Most effective for the parents of the 6-16 set. Loaded with practical applications, exercises, family activities, etc, in order to help solidify the family as a whole using finances and finacial concepts as the catalyst.

Will go a long way toward building finacially sound habits and lifestyles. Aside from the Christian/Biblical basis, the material presented in this book just make good common financial sence!

                4 out of 5 stars A TERRIFIC FAMILY TOOL.......2001-08-07

How do we go about paying allowances and still teach our kids to contribute to the family without expecting to be paid?

Written from a Christian perspective, the HOME ALLOWANCE AND CHORE KIT answers this dilemma beautifully. This is not just a book, but a complete bookkeeping system designed to organize household chores, and gauge how well each member of the family is contributing to the family's well being.

Burkett's theory is that each member of the family is responsible for tasks for which he/she is not paid because these tasks serve everyone's needs -- duties such as washing dishes, cleaning bathrooms, setting the table, etc. A child's allowance should not be tied to an opportunity to earn income, because their allowance is part of the overall family income. However, it is important to give children the opportunity to earn extra money doing jobs that go BEYOND those which regularly contribute to the family's overall well being.

The kit contains tear-off "chore sheets" so children can have a constant visual reminder of what their contributing responsibilities are. It also contains an optional job "Board" with a magnetic background (for easy refrigerator mounting) for use after your child completes his contributing responsibilities on the chore sheets. Only the jobs on the "Board" can be completed for compensation, the other tasks on the chore sheets are completed because he/she is responsible for contributing to the household. There is also a Parent's Guide and Log Book which is chock full of terrific "Parenting Economics" tips and instructions on how to use the kit for maximum benefit.

Now this may sound like something anyone an devise on their own, but Burkett has a way of pulling the whole concept together so nicely that I highly recommend this purchase for any parent struggling with this concept.

4 Stars. The kit presents a healthy idea, although it is a bit sparse. Nevertheless, I found it to be a great beginning point for teaching my girls (ages 8 and 5) about responsibility and finances. They went through all the steps with me and happen to think it's also a lot of fun! (now who would have thought THAT would happen??)

                  Book Description

'Tumber and Palmer have provided an invaluable review of how journalists covered and reported the Iraq war and its aftermath. Their exhaustive research has resulted in an impressive analysis that makes this book essential reading' -

John Owen, Executive Producer of News Xchange and Visiting Professor of Journalism, City University

'This is a meticulously researched book that lays bare the way the war was reported. Decide for yourself whether the media 'embeds' - of whom I was one - were the world's eyes and ears inside the military, or merely the puppets of the Pentagon and the Ministry of Defence in London' - Ben Brown, BBC

'Media at War offers insights into the ways in which media at war inevitably become participants in both the military and the political wars' - Professor Michael Gurevitch, University of Maryland

International media coverage of the war in Iraq provoked public scrutiny as well debate amongst journalists themselves.

Media at War offers a critical overview of the coverage in the context of other preceding wars, including the first Gulf War, and opens up the debate on the key questions that emerged during the crisis. For example,

                  - What did we actually gain from 'live, on the spot' reporting?

                  - Were journalists adequately trained and protected?

                  - How compromised were the so-called 'embedded' journalists?

Tumber and Palmer's analysis covers both the pre-war and post war phase, as well as public reaction to these events, and as such provides an invaluable framework for understanding how the media and news organisations operated during the Iraq Crisis.

                  Book Description

At times of global crisis, Jonathan Schell’s writings have always presented nuanced and influential alternatives to conventional thinking. The moral clarity of his reportage first entered the public consciousness with his dispatches for The New Yorker on Vietnam. These seminal articles became The Village of Ben Suc (1967), a searing account that predicted the failure of Pentagon politics. Over the subsequent decades, Schell’s varied and consistently prescient articles have articulated the now commonly held notion that image has replaced substance in politics; provided (in Fate of the Earth) an apocalyptic vision of nuclear war that revitalized the disarmament movement; and more recently, charted the rise of “the other superpower”—the international peace movement that transcends country, class, and religion. As America finds itself at a crucial juncture both domestically and internationally, The Jonathan Schell Reader is vital reading for those who wish to better understand the history they have come from and the direction they should be heading toward. This book provides a landmark collection that spans the career of one of the leading thinkers and authors of our time.

5 out of 5 stars The Jonathan Schell Reader.......2007-01-10

When wondering about 'detant' or 'salt' or 'MAD'(mutual assured destruction) you need to consider the facts. This book helps to understand the nuclear arms race and is useful when pondering todays militaries and arms.

From the supplier: Reports of atrocities committed by Iraqi soldiers during their invasion of Kuwait were solicited and orchestrated by the public relations firm of Hill and Knowlton, working for the group Citizens for a Free Kuwait which in turn was financed by the Kuwaiti government. Such so-called eyewitness accounts were accepted without corroboration by the media and played a crucial role in swaying the United Nations to take military action. Stories of babies removed from incubators by Iraqi soldiers later turned out to be false.

                          Book Description

Margaret Spufford has written as detailed an account of the lives and activities of the chapmen as there is likely to be, given the widely-spread and fragmented evidence. She shows where and when they were active, and in particular their rise in the seventeenth century, their ranks and their typical careers, the variety of the cloths and other wares they carried, and the attitude of authority towards them.
