Excellent.......2007-05-20
Far more detailed than the How to Draw Cartoons book by this author. There are examples of heads, eyes, noses, mouth, hands, and many other elements in good detail.
high quality.......2006-11-10
This a useful book for the artist (or developing artist) moving into cartoon drawing. The material is high quality, drawn and written by a professional with many years' work under his belt. You'll wish it were longer.
Drawing on Inspiration.......2006-06-01
I bought this book so I can learn to draw cartoons with my 2.5-year-old daughter. Right around this time I had finished reading the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, and I was wondering how I might be able to start teaching my child about different emotions. Then on pages 18 and 19 of Hart's book I found a list of cartoon faces depicting emotions. We started drawing some of them. Currently we're concentrating on two: Happy and Laughing.
Chris Hart Does It Again!.......2004-02-27
Without a doubt, Christopher Hart is one of the most prolific and talented cartoonist around. Having worked with companies such as Disney, his cartoon style is entertaining and stylic as well. It's got personality and it will make you want to engross yourself in the book. If you've not read any book by Chris Hart, this is one of his best. However, it is a wonderful book with lots of helpful ideas on becoming a cartoonist yourself.
It covers everything from how to place the features to costumes to animals. It would definitely be a useful starting (and ending) ground for anyone interested in this art.
Excellent find!.......2003-08-23
This book is great! There are a ton of helpful tips and techniques that range from how to draw facial expressions and body types to how to draw ice cubes and water... and even how to convey wind or rain. The author, Christopher Hart, even explains why cartoon characters have only three fingers.
This book is very clear, very informative and very funny! I highly recommend this book!

A broad overview.......2007-01-09
This book gives a broad overview of watercolor techniques, from loose and washy, to photorealism, including glazing, spattering, color theory, and masking. It's a good way to see all the variety found in watercolor today. I only wish it could have gone into more depth on some of the more unusual techniques.
Everything you ever wanted to know about watercolor.......2006-08-07
I am new to water color and have many questions ,and this book answers them and gives more information that is very useful
An Outstanding Watercolor Rference book.......2006-03-09
If you can only purchase one book on watercolor this is the one. It is very comprehensive covering every aspect of watercolor painting from materials needed to showing all the various painting techniques.
Covers everything!!.......2005-01-23
This book gives good detail and excellent examples to allow various styles to emerge. Very organized and easy to read. It covers so many different aspects that I, as a newbie, have found it a must-have out of the many books that I have purchased to help me learn. This really is one of the very best of the many that have been written out there. You'll not be frustrated or feel left lacking for knowledge.
Lots of hidden jewels in the book.......2004-04-15
A wealth of information at your finger tips from some of the greatest watercolor artists of our time. There are enough practice exercises to keep you busy for many many months. Everytime I pick it up I discover something new that I had overlooked before.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative but feels a bit lacking at times.......2007-06-02
Being new to painting (only about a year) I felt this book gave some good ground work but lacked indepth information for someone just starting out. Don't get me wrong its a great book, packed full of info accross lots of topics, and there is its weakness, too many topics, not enough depth on any one.
Not for advanced painters.......2004-09-25
This book is not for anyone at an advanced level- whilst there is a whole lot of information, each technique is described in one page, with very little depth. Some of the examples chosen to highlight a particular technique are odd indeed - why for example, if one was showing how to paint "dappled sunlight", would the subject matter be a building? I may be odd myself (who knows), but the term 'dappled sunlight' brings a rural/country scene to mind....
Informative and fun.......2002-12-03
I am a serious painter and I refer to this book often. It is a collection of advice and demos from many contemporary artists. Landscape, portrait, and still life are all represented. The artists' works are quite varied, so the result is interesting and fresh. I enjoy this book and think other artists will too.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Overview of Most Art Materials.......2007-06-25
I was exceptionally pleased with this book, which was well-organized with much information on most art materials. Of course, like any book titled "everything you ever wanted to know about..." it's not as comprehensive as the title boasts. I enjoy scratchboard art, and there is no mention of that medium in the book, and I'm sure there are others, but that one stood out to me. I'm not disappointed enough to take a star away from it though.
Overall, each section discusses some of the history behind the medium discussed, as well as techniques, common manufacturers, and innovations. The author gives recommendations and caveats for each medium, and reasons for both, which I like, because I not only want to know the good and bad, but I want to know why. I find it easier to remember that way.
I was surprised at how conversational the book's writing was. I had expected to pick it up and look things up, like I would a dictionary or encyclopedia. Amazingly, I started reading at the beginning, and read all through it. Well-designed and well-written, this book should be assigned reading to beginning art students. It would take the mystery out of some media very quickly, and allow art instructors to get on to more important matters without having to focus on petty details about materials.
Very good quick general reference.......2001-04-20
This book has a very good general overview of almost any art material you would want. The layout and subdivisions for each material is very informative, The photos and format for this book make it very helpful and easy to use --- the spiral binding allows it to lay flat and the hard cover keeps it in good condition. It is also very helpful and easy to take it with you directly to your local art supply location and show them exactly what you are looking for and trying to do --- the size is very managable. Overall I've referred to this book quite often to investigate materials I'm going to try for the first time and to see the technique tips for materials I've been using for years.

Steve Spurrier is the epitome of a national sports figure either loved or hated with enthusiasm by millions.
Customer Reviews:
Steve speaks up!!.......2002-09-25
If you love Steve Spurrier, you'll love this collection of hundreds of his quotes. If you hate Spurrier, you'll still love the book as it gives you ammo to yell back at. If you're not in either of these categories of people, then you might want to check and see if you're still alive. This is Spurrier in a nutshell, and it's a beautiful book.

Journal, 1955-1962: Reflections on the French-Algerian War
ASIN: 185973927X |
Book Description
What makes people act against their own national identity?
How real are the concepts of nationalism and patriotism?
In what ways does the media control our perception of history in the making?
This ground-breaking work addresses these important questions through an examination of the Algerian war of 1954-62 and the significant French resistance to their own leaders during the bitter conflict. Through the use of extensive interviews, it provides powerful insights into the clash of values that accompanied the war.
In exploring the events and experiences that led a small minority of French people to reject colonialism in the wake of the Algerian conflict, Memories of Resistance focuses on the importance of political allegiances and ideologies, and the motivations for resisting them. The complex issues of identity and shared memory are examined to provide an indispensable analysis of loyalty and self-identity in the wider political context of the world. The book also debates the changing ways in which the media influences perceptions of, and attitudes towards, world events. Third World liberation ideas, personal experiences of French colonialism, memory and the significance of anti-Nazi resistance and political allegiances are all discussed in this wide-ranging and illuminating study.
Memories of Resistance represents a major contribution to the theory and practice of oral history, which is fast becoming one of the most popular and dynamic areas of historical research and will be essential reading for anyone studying French colonial history.
Book Description
"Enthralling eye-witness histories."--John Keegan . On August 17th, 1943, for the first time, the entire American bomber force based in Britain struck deep in Germany. They targeted the Messerschmitt aircraft factory at Regensburg and the ball-bearing factories at Schweinfurt...with disastrous results. One in six bombers failed to return and the U.S. Air Force suffered its worst defeat of World War Two. The best-selling author of The Berlin Raids and The Battle of Hamburg now gives the same meticulous attention to this momentous setback. Working from original documents and personal accounts of survivors (military and civilian) on both sides, he reveals how the events of that fateful day, with its harrowing losses, destroyed any hopes of ending the war quickly.

Daughter of Pilot.......2007-04-13
If you want to know the how's and why's and what happened you can't ask for better. My father was shot down in this raid and his crew and he taken POW. Mr. Middlebrook interviewed him and many other participants. Reading it gives you chills.
U.S. Air Force Navigator.......2001-04-22
Note--Middlebrook's book "The Schweinfurt Regensburg Mission" has nothing to do with Accounting. Amazon has the wrong reviews appearing with this title.
Absolutely essential reading for anyone wishing to understand American bombing operations and tactics in Germany during WWII. Middlebrook's research and attention to detail are first rate! He relies on original documents and "first-hand" accounts to paint a fresh portrait of these missions from the perspective of the American bomber crew, the German fighter pilots, and the people on the ground in Schweinfurt and Regensburg. Highest recommendation. For a great perspective on British night bomber tactics, try Middlebrook's "The Berlin Raids--RAF Bomber Command Winter 1943-44." An equally excellent companion volume.

Book Description
This collection of new essays explores the nature of explanation and causality. It provides a stimulating and wide ranging debate on one of the central issues that has concerned philosophers and scientists alike--the epistemological nature of their enquiries. The volume not only sheds light on some of the general questions involved, but also addresses specific problems involved in explanation in different fields--physics, biology, psychology and the social sciences. Explanation and its Limits is an up-to-date, sharply focused and comprehensive review for all philosophers, scientists and social scientists interested in methodology.

Description:
In this paper I discuss two questions. What does Kant understand by mechanical explanation in the Critique of judgment? And why does he think that mechanical explanation is the only type of the explanation of nature available to us? According to the interpretation proposed, mechanical explanations in the Critique of judgment refer to a particular species of empirical causal laws. Mechanical laws aim to explain nature by reference to the causal interaction between the forces of the parts of matter and the way in which they form into complex material wholes. Just like any other empirical causal law, however, mechanical laws can never be known with full certainty. The conception according to which we can explain all of nature by means of mechanical laws, it turns out, is based on what Kant calls 'regulative' or 'reflective' considerations about nature. Nothing in Kant's Critique of judgment suggests that these considerations can ever be justified by reference to how the natural world really is. I suggest that what, upon first consideration, appears to be a thoroughly mechanistic conception of nature in Kant is much more limited than one might have expected.
