Acrylic Revolution.......2007-09-26
I found this book to be excellent. With all the new acrylic products on the market it is a wonderful guide for using them. The different techniques and formulas are great.
INTERESTING, ENJOYABLE,.......2007-09-01
I have to say, I enjoyed this book, but I also have to say, that the constant mentioning by the author of her use of Golden paint products as her favorites became quite tedious and I firmly believe cheapened her work.I also enjoyed the physical construction of the book. The spiral binding was a nice feature to incorporate, especially enclosed in a hard cover.
It would be nice to see more publishers adopting this style of book binding, they are a joy to read.
easy to follow.......2007-08-18
Acrylic Revolution is an excellent guide on how to use a variety of acrylic mediums. This is definitely the type of book you want in hand as you select items off the shelf at the art supply store. The author did a perfect job of making the many techniques easy to follow. The pages are bright and the photographs are very detailed. That being said, the interior page design of this book is not as "revolutionary" as the cover implies. It is very basic. If you judge a book by its cover, you may well be disappointed.
Acrylic Revolution -A must for the mixed media artist.......2007-08-16
As a mixed media artist,I have been painting with acrylics and a variety of other media for years. I have intuitively used many of the techniques presented in the book however,I never really understood the nature of acrylic media. Consequently, this book will be a valuable reference. It will also serve as a source of inspiration if I get "stuck" in the middle of a work. I love the lay out of each technique. Nancy Reyner does an excellent job of providing clear, concise instructions. The examples are also nicely presented.
If you are new to acrylics, this book is a must have. It will get you started with the best acrylic media out there, Golden's, and provide plenty of fun techniques to try.
A Must for Acrylic Painters.......2007-08-16
If you've got a question.......this book will answer it. Easy to use and follow with good visual and written instructions.
Buy it, and have a play with some interesting techniques.

old and crappy.......2006-07-03
This book is a bit outdated now.
The author of this book currently has a brand of his own paints and materials. He's so caught up on materials and your hands, that he doesnt teach to use your brain or eyes. He's one of those types that's obsessed with finding out the "secret" Maroger medium, the ratio of oil:pigment in old masters paintings, etc.
I dont know how anyone can think that using Raphaels' paints will make you paint like Raphael. It's like putting on Jerome Bettis' football pads and thinking you'll weigh 265 and run faster than a cheetah. It's not going to happen.
He's also big on slavishly copying photographs. I guess that's how a lot of illustrators think, though.
Compare this to books by the golden age illustrators; like Loomis, Rockwell, Leyendecker. . . even guys like Hogarth. They focus little on materials and "techniques," and teach more about learning to think and see.
In the end, you have to realize that Michelangelo could have painted the Sistine ceiling with a mop and a bucket of mud, and it would have been just as well done. Learn the basics of materials (which you can just find online), and find someone who will teach you to think.
Adequate for non-users of listed materials:.......2006-03-16
I was primarly interested in the book for teaching students the finer points of using Gouache in Illustration. Although, there was nothing particularly new in the text about the material, it was all new to my students who found the material helpful.
Good information.......2006-03-15
This is a good book with a lot of tips , but I belive that works good for beginners. Essential for beginners! But for advanced ilustrators a good book to fix some tips.
Very Good Book, excellente for artists.......2006-02-21
the knowledge and in-depth shared in this book is excellent, helps you to go further in the techs, and with tips and trick for the materials and equipment. The only "but" that i find is that it's not a step by step teaching for beginners. Excellente book!!!
True to it's title.......2004-01-21
So many self education books for artists claim to be definitive, comprehensive, or the only book you'll ever need. I don't know if this is the only book you'll need, but it is a cheaper alternative to paying tuition at an art college. And, unlike many how-to books (and some art colleges), Rob Howard gives very specific and detailed instructions. He's light on the motivational inspiration and heavy on technique. Afterall, a working illustrator (the book's target) doesn't need to get in touch with the inner artist, but rather needs tools to get the inner art out onto the client's desk.
Additionally, Rob Howard is quite talented. Often times people with Howard's gifts are so busy with paying customers that they don't have time to put together such a quality book. Every illustration is professional quality and an inspiration in itself!
The book is packed with photos and illustrations. He lists by name and sometimes manufacturer exactly what materials you need. Covers topics from Prismacolor pencils on Denril to Friskets and masking to pastels, acrylics and airbrushing....etc.
It's only weakness is that it's due for an update. First published in '92 before the internet explosion and before Adobe Photoshop and Synthetik Studio Artist became powerful enough computer based tools, this book focuses entirely on natural media. Just the same, an illustrator looking to set him or herself appart from the pack might want to set aside the software and use the proven techniques in this book!

This is a book to open the eye's of a beginner. The book lacks so much. There is very little how to or what to or what to use. I've learned more from one (1) chapter of other books then I did from cover to cover of this one. Very, very poor!

Essential for the professional in governmental accounting.......2001-09-05
The GFOA did an excellent job of explaining governmental accounting. The book has incorporated the new model as established in Governmental Accounting Standards Board Statement 34. The book is worth owning just see how a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) is prepared and looks under the GASB Statement 34 model.
While GFOA is not the standards setting body, it is important for professionals trying to achieve the Certificate of Excellence in Government Accounting for their CAFR to understand the GFOA's interpretation since they are the body running the awards program.
I would recommend this book for any person charged with managing the financial affairs of a governmental agency.

Book Description
The end of the Cold War brought widespread optimism about the future of civil-military relations. But as Michael Desch argues in this thought-provoking challenge to Harold Lasswell's famous "garrison state" thesis, the truth is that civilian authorities have not been able to exert greater control over military policies and decision making. In wartime, civil authorities cannot help but pay close attention to military matters. In times of peace, however, civilian leaders are less interested in military affairs--and therefore often surrender them to the military.
Focusing on a wide range of times and places, Desch begins with a look at changes in U.S. civil-military relations since the end of the Cold War. He then turns to the former Soviet Union, explaining why it was easier for civilians to control the Soviet military than its present-day Russian successor. He examines the Hindenburg-Ludendorff dictatorship in World War I Germany, Japan during the interwar era, and France's role in the Algerian crisis. Finally, he explores the changing domestic security environment and civil-military relations in South America.

Terrorism Portrayed as Justice.......2005-05-07
Now what about the nationalist/fascitst movement of ASALA Armeninan terrorist movement that left thousands of innocent people dead and wounded across America and Europe in the 1970's!
It just astonished me as how certain discursive formations can actually lead people to believe as the 'real' reality. It does not matter whether for an event to 'really happen' or not. What matters is that you hear it on a radio or read it on a newspaper or website or even talk about it at the water-cooler. Those who have had the chance to watch 'Wag the Dog' might get the idea of how such 'reality' is constructed.
On a more advanced level 'discursivity', a la Foucault, is a building block of a discourse in which certain linkages, here and their, add to what ordinary people believe on the street.
Now obviously Hitler was one of the worst things that happened during the 20th century. This is commonsense. But to add certain 'material' so as to advance another claim by building upon Hitler, is something that should be carefully approached, at least for people who at least visit and read stuff through Amazon.
If a chain in a series of discursive formations can be shown to be weak or invalid than it would be proven that that chain of a discourse is on shaky grounds, and that most of what is known about it is likely to be false.
Unfortunately we see certain 'material' is attached to certain claims so as to resemble the Holocaust. Let us revisit a single claim on part of those would like to exploit the events during the early 20th century. A reviewer, for instance, obviously bought one claim and thus knows it to be the 'truth'
Adolf Hitler: "Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?"
Now has anybody bothered to investigate it. No, of course. "It sounds like as if it is true, so why not believe it". Well fortunately there are still people who like investigating such stuff.
Read for example :
Heath W. Lowry
Washington, D.C.
Political Communication and Persuasion, Volume 3, Number 2 (1985)
Abstract This article traces the history of a purported Adolf Hitler quote which cites the perecent of the world's lack of reaction to the fate of Armenians during the First World War as a justification for his planned extermination of European Jewry in the course of the Second World War. By a detailed examination of the genesis of this quotation the author demonstrates that there is no historical basis for attributing such a statement to Hitler...
[...]
If one is serious about really getting into history, rather than believing simply what is out their in the popular press,
I would additionally suggest to take a tour of the documents of Ambassador Morgenthau. First let us not take any word for having a Godly truth 'Its ambassador so its gotta be true' mentality is ok if you're ok with it (respect of thought). But there are historical evidence that suggests that Morgenthau did not even know Ottoman scripture, and that this is proved throughout his letters when he attempts to translate 'words' and 'dates' of events. Do not hesitate to read...
[...]
For those who have CAREFULLY read what I have written so far, notice I am not either on one side of the argument between Armenian historians or historians of the Ottoman empire, but that I have just thrown out some thought provoking information so that one will at least ask some questions before believing what they read. Doubtless there will be those occasional pointless replies to this review, but again all I am saying is, think before you react. Now one could argue that I am saying is a postmodernist crituque and historical relativism. That would be false. I believe in historical analysis, as a scientific enterprise (and only the scientific version of it). But then again let us not forget that some American historians who were studying the case at hand were bombed by Armenians. Now if history is written by historians and that some historians (i.e. UCLA professor Stanford Shaw)are bullied so as not to investigate certain historical matters than, at least if you have a capacity to think critically than be suspicious about it. [...]
By the way absolutely nothing is mentioned about the equal ammount of civilian Turks that were slaugthered by Russian backed Armenian militia. Nor anything about the terrorism campaign of Armenians during the 1970's that left thousands of people dead and wounded. To say "denying genocide is a wrong thing" is one thing. But in doing so if one is denying the death of tens of thousands of innocent Turks, is called hypocrism and puts one in ethically shaky grounds.
The latest British governemeents acceptance that the "blue book", which Armenian claims are based upon, have been declared by the government itself to be a WW1 time propaganda material. Yes you heard it right!
Here's another eye opener: Often the claim is made there 1 million Armenians were murdered. What they do not say that the same material they indicate that a "genocide" happened says that
the ENTIRE Armenian population in the Ottoman Empire was 800 thousand (200 thousand difference!) MOREOVER Keep in mind that the Armenian diaspora, that builds its own desire to have a national identity, has a population of more than 9 million people across the world. HOW CAN this be??? Well thats how nationalism is formed: impossibile numbers, man on white horse, the evil "other" etc.... So this "genocide" attitude is more of identity building rather than real history.
Well I hope I contributed on an intellectual level and I hope 'thought thugs' would not misunderstand what I have suggested.
Excellent read and great account of history.......2005-04-01
Edward Alexander does a great job to present a historical account of the events of the Armenian genocide at the hands of the Young Turks in 1915. The book is a great read because detailed historical research is presented in a form of a thriller of one of the most famous assassinations and subsequent trials of modern history.
Let me also point out that Alexander's account represents a very objective view of history, praising numerous Turkish officials (like the governor of Der Zor, and 50 Turkish parliamentarians) and individuals who tried to protect the Armenians and refused to carry out orders of Talaat and Enver.
As for the reader below, don't mind him. The entire Turkish nation still thinks that the best way of facing a black page of their history is trying to sweep it under the rug. My advice to him is to bow his head to the memory of the victims, ask for forgiveness and reconciliation so that Armenians and Turks can once again be friends.
His facts are accurate!.......2003-06-26
The government of Turkey goes to great lengths to deny the twentieth century's First Genocide. Ed Alexender relied on the historical archives of at least several countries , mainly Germany and USA's National Archives.Being a retired foreign service officer, he knows the value of facts and he documents his facts quite well!
When it comes to presenting facts, I believe the reviewer from Turkey is presenting his goverments misguided policy and nothing else. His reviews are always negative when it deals with the Armenian Genocide.
I recommend this book highly!!
International Justice.......2000-10-24
This book is a worthy read for students, scholars, and laymen interested in the complex and ofthen paradoxical arena of international justice. Written in the form of a thriller that could rival LeCarre ,Angler, and Ludlum. This book delves deep into the psyche of the victims of genocide in a masterful tribute to the human spirit to endure adversity and mete out justice.

Book Description
The future of basic scientific research in Japan is foreshadowed in the developments at Tsukuba Science City. This planned scientific community is vital to the basic research effort in Japan: 45% of Japan's public sector researchers work at Tsukuba and 48% of the nation's research and development budget is spent there. Outside Japan, Tsukuba is prestigious yet inside Japan Tsukuba remains a controversial social scientific experiment.
Growing a Japanese Science City explores the political and economic motivations behind the construction of Tsukuba, looks at how plans changed during the process of implementation, and examines the ways in which scientific reseach is conducted at Tsukuba today. Its history, its failures and successes need to be understood by governments and businesses looking into long-term strategies for planning scientific research and economic growth.
