Customer Reviews:
Makes an incredible program more incredible.......2002-04-26
When I reviewed the SureTrak program here last may I considered myself to be an experienced used who fully understood the features of that powerful PM application. After reading this book I found out that I was only using a fraction of the features that are built into SureTrak. For example, while I knew that it supported multiple calendars. This feature gives you absolute control and is especially useful when you're using subcontractors or multi-national resources. Until I was stepped through it by the book's lessons I didn't know how to fully exploit its power.
It was the same for reports. SureTrak includes reports for every conceivable management style and project type. The problem is there are so many that it's difficult to select the ones best suited to each project's unique requirements or your PM standards. This book clearly explained the reports and clearly explained how to create custom reports in the unlikely event that what you need isn't already included. I also learned a lot from the lessons on resource management, as well as the author's tips for project management in general.
If you're using SureTrak you should get this book because it's a safe bet that you're not using everything it has to offer for planning, scheduling and control - and this book will reveal them.
Fast start to using the power of SureTrak.......2002-04-17
Although SureTrak Project Manager 3.0 ships with adequate documentation and the program is intuitive, there are three good reasons to buy this book:
1. The product documentation covers every feature - the information about planning and managing projects using this powerful tool is scattered throughout, making it difficult to tap into SureTrak's power without wading through an overwhelming amount of nice-to-know, but non-essential detail.
2. Although anyone who has used Microsoft's ubiquitous MS Project will have no problem getting started with SureTrak, they will miss the true project management features of SureTrak that are not present (or don't correctly work) in MS Project. This book identifies those features and shows how to use them effectively.
3. The author goes beyond merely describing how to use SureTrak by showing you how to use effective project management techniques, many of which take years of managing projects to discover.
The book is structured as a series of 20 lessons (called workshops) that are designed to step you through setting up a project, and planning and scheduling it. If you follow them in sequence you will be able to not only set up a project using SureTrak's rich feature set, but will also pick up general project management techniques along the way. An example of one such technique is how the author classifies projects into four levels for planning and controlling. These levels are based on project complexity, with Level 1 being the simplest and suitable for short projects, to Level 4 for complex, high-value projects. You are given the planning and tracking criteria for each project type, which allows you to tailor your approach as well as ensure that you don't over-manage simple projects or under-manage the complex ones.
You are also shown how to use the more powerful features, such as the many project views (work breakdown structure, activity or resource), managing the sophisticated calendaring functions, and effectively using the resource profiles and reporting features. I particularly like the way earned value is treated. The author shows how to use SureTrak's facilities for managing to earned value, as well as explaining this essential technique (which, by the way, is now a part of the Project Management Institute's PMBOK 2000 version). Another bonus is the way scheduling is explained by walking through adding logic to activities. You'll not only be shown how to perform this task, but given reasons why you should use one approach from among four possibilities to establish relationships. In this example the choices are start-to-start, finish-to-start, start-to-finish and finish-to-finish.
This book is clear, concise and heavily illustrated with screenshots from SureTrak. The tutorial style and the way the lessons are sequenced will get you quickly up-to-speed with SureTrak and give you the knowledge and skills necessary to employ it with minimum reference to the manuals that come with the software.
Planning Using Primavera SureTrak Project Manager Version 3........2001-06-19
Planning Using Primavera SureTrak Project Manager Version 3 is a Training Manual introducing the features of the Suretrak Version 3.0 Software which is used for Planning and Controlling Projects. The Technical Services Group at John Holland has been using SureTrak since its introduction by Primavera. I personally use Paul Harris' manual in the delivery of training courses in SureTrak. At John Holland we conduct SureTrak training over a two day period, and within this time limitation I have found the manual provides comprehensive detail on the features of SureTrak and is easy to follow. As it is considered to be an excellent guide in respect of the use of the software, at the end of the training course attendees receive a manual for reference and as a 'memory jogger' when they start to use the software. The manual is divided into sections with a 'workshop' at the end of each section providing the ability to practice the points covered. Useful tips, for both experienced and new users are provided throughout the manual and are indicated with an 'i'. This is a manual that the user will turn to again and again. Particularly for new users of the Software, but even for experienced users who are trying to solve a particulasr problem it is a good guide into the features of SureTrak. This manual fills a slot in the market as an easy to follow guide in the use of the SureTrak Version 3.0 software, and I would recommend it to those wishing to learn how to use SureTrak or refresh their skills.
Learning to use Suretrak V3.0.......2001-06-18
Approximately 200 pages presented as a comprehensive step by step guide to setting up and getting the most out of Suretrak. I found many helpful tips that are not in the Suretrak's help files or manuals. A chapter is also devoted to the new features in Suretrak Version 3.0 and this allowed me, as an existing Suretrak user, to hone in on the new features. In all, 21 workshops re-enforced the material as its presented and made me reflect on the content. Readers will need access to the Suretrak software (the demo version will do) to get the most from this book.
Book Description
This books may be used as:
A reference manual for those who are looking for a simpler alternative to the "User Manual" or,
A self teach book as an alternative to attending a training course or,
For instructors to use on a training course as a course outline and student hand out.
The SureTrak Version 3.0 book has 210pages and includes exercises and a large number of screen dumps, tips and an index.
Product Description
This book is a complete rewrite of the 2004 book and not just an update. It includes more student workshops, many new pages of text and covers more software functions. It is designed to teach planners and schedulers how setup and use the software in a project environment and this version explains in more detail about how to plan and control projects with the software. It is aimed at any industry such as building, construction, oil & gas, software development, government and defence.
Book Description
This award-winning, innovative program of 100 appealing lessons adapts a workable, appealing and easy-to-follow approach that can be used for multi-level instructional needs. The lessons are formed around 28 flexible instructional sequences called strands in which participants can select lessons from the range of choices at each of four steps of individual strands. Coverage includes drawing, painting, collage, print-making, mosaic, textile design, modeling, carving, constructed sculpture, ceramics, casting, art history, and art criticism. Profusely illustrated.
Customer Reviews:
Envisions Art Online.......2006-12-06
Although several projects included in this text seem outdated in the 21st century, overall the organization of projects suggest a visionary way of thinking about art delivery in an age of online learning!
Inspiring Ideas For The Uninspired.......2006-05-30
This book is particularly helpful when a student is impaired by a lack of creativity. Even with the assignments the prompts are vague enough to ensure that students create original artwork.
I recommend this book for any artist that feels out of ideas and any educator that needs to have lessons on demand for fast learners or uncreative students.

Book Description
This is the third book in successful series of occasional sketches by the grandfather of American alternative comix. These sketches reveal another side-- a contemplative side-- to the controversial artist, renowned for his taboo-breaking satires of American society. With his intricate cross-hatching and observant line, the drawings here show Crumb as an imaginative chronicler of everyday life.

"You Deserve a Break Today".......2003-03-25
OK, I'm a Crumb fan. We ain't all, but many of us are, and I'm one of the many. Waiting For Food 3 is a beautiful collection of doodles and sketches by R. Crumb while... well, while waiting for food. This book is a collection of his restaurant placemat drawings. As R. proudly says in his intro dated July 2002, "I'm no longer simply doodling to pass the time 'til the food arrives. I'm EARNING MONEY while waiting to be served!" Good, he's having fun... he deserved it. This guy (almost) single handedly started the underground comic craze of the 60's and 70's. He started Zap Comix, writing and drawing the first two issues completely by himself. Check out crumbmuseum.com for a tribute to the Master, Robert (R) Crumb.

Book Description
Henry Care (1646-88) was a Restoration publicist from middle-class London who made his living by his skillful pen during the Exclusion Crisis and the reign of King James II. In both eras he developed a large following in the popular press. Although he is little known today, both friends and enemies in his time regarded him as someone to be reckoned with. The Stuart kings also appreciated the influence and potential threat of Care and of the press in general, and they sought to restrain him and to tighten controls on the press, even as they themselves used propagandists to combat both.
By exploring Care's life and work from his anonymous origins to his eventual celebrity as a polemicist first for the Whigs and later for James II, and by examining the influence of his ideas in the American colonies, Schwoerer offers new insights into how the nonelite participated in and affected politics. Care's career illuminates many issues currently of interest in the study of Restoration England, including print culture, the uses of law, women's history, attitudes toward religious liberty and toleration, the Exclusion Crisis, and the Revolution of 1688--89. Using Care's life as a window into the period, Schwoerer contributes significantly to the ongoing reevaluation and rethinking of the Restoration.

It's hard to believe that the stories in Plane Insanity, the hilarious book by Elliott Hester, are true. But they are. Before you read even a single page, you know you're in for a wild ride just from the subtitle: A Flight Attendant's Tales of Sex, Rage, and Queasiness at 30,000 Feet. Hester has encountered just about everything in his 15 years of flying the skies or "riding tin," and he recounts these laugh-out-loud encounters with plenty of attitude and self-deprecating humor. Not to spoil the fun, but a few juicy tidbits include Hester as the hapless victim of a child's projectile vomit, chasing a sparrow around the cabin, mistakenly putting a woman on the wrong flight, and recalling the unfathomable account of an inebriated man defecating atop a liquor cart, to the horror of passengers and crew. Just when you think the stories can't get anymore outlandish he outdoes himself with the titillating antics of amorous couples who vie for membership in the infamous Mile High Club. And did our Mr. Hester himself ever become a member of this elite club? You'll have to read the book to find that out. Believe me, you'll be glad you did--this is the one of the year's funniest reads. --Jill Fergus
Book Description
You're belted into a middle seat with burly businessmen on either side. It's ninety-two degrees and someone forgot deodorant. A baby screams. A kid kicks the back of your seat. After two hours the plane hasn't even left the gate. Welcome to modern airline travel! In Plane Insanity, flight attendant Elliott Hester delivers stories that could only come from a man who 'rides tin' for a living. Readers will hear about: - The passenger from hell - A smuggled python - Prostitutes working the lavatories - A riot in coach class - A heist - The anatomy of a carry-on bag - A malodorous couple - The Mile-High Club and more! Fasten your seatbelts. After Plane Insanity, you'll never think of air travel the same way.
Customer Reviews:
Plane boring!.......2007-08-21
This book is a rehash of old stories. Nothing new or insightful. A far better read is Babylon Air.
Plane Insanity is very funny in the first 5 or so pages but loses the plot after than and becomes a standard review of items you have either experienced or read about in the papers.
Most disappointing read this year!
Change job.......2007-05-27
Half the stories are not funny and there is way too much complaining about the job. Mr. Hester is, though, a skillful writer and you can read thru the whole book to end up wondering why you did not throw it away sooner. Maybe Mr.Hester should quit flying and become a full time writer.
Fit to read while waiting for your delayed flight.
Great idea, but. . . .......2006-12-20
The author writes what could be a fascinating book, but he seems to defend the airline industry at the expense of the passengers. His section on the 'Mile High Club' could have been much better. Granted, the force and appeal of sex is part of nature, but graphic descriptions aren't necessary.
If he writes a regular column, I would be suspect as to the content of his column. No doubt that we humans are funnier than anybody, but the author didn't have to be so bitter about passengers. I have met some flight attendants who were very pleasant, and some who were rude, and most who were pleasantly distant. It's unfortunate that Reagan and the Congress chose to deregulate the airline industy, it has suffered since then.
But the author backs away from that, concentrating on a mish-mash of disconnected stories.
Extremly Funny, Gross, & Entertaining!.......2006-06-25
A friend of mine wrote a review on this book back in 2002. His review is titled, "In the Friendly Skies," by D. Clancy. Mr. Clancy has written a lot of reviews on here and was a very wonderful person, who passed away 2 yrs ago, and is extremely missed by friends, family, and the theater community in Portland, Or, where he was a very active member. He also worked in the airline industry for some time and I remember him telling me about this book and how wonderfully funny it was and I never forgot it!
This book was tremendously funny and very well written. Some stories are extremely sickening so not for the weak of stomach, some stories make you mad on how the public treat flight attendants, and some make you downright cry tears of humor! I LOVED this book! You won't believe these tales of the sky especially since they are true. I intend to purchase this for my collection of favorites.
Interesting.......2006-03-13
I thought the content in this book was quite informational as I have never know anyone who was a flight attendant. It was quite comical and believable as to how some humans act under some extreme circumstances. For the price, I would recommend this to anyone wanting a light read.

Book Description
Whistling Death is the true story, by the test pilot, of the rush to produce the F4U Corsair, the Navy fighter that brought America air superiority over the Japanese Zero in World War II. Here is the crash program - complete with crash landings - powered by the dedicated men and women of the home front who designed and built this revolutionary, tide-turning airplane. Boone T. Guyton, an experimental test pilot at Chance Vought during and after World War II, flew 105 types of aircraft in 45 years as a pilot. , 16 pages of photographs, 6" x 9"
Customer Reviews:
A great story about a great airplane.......2007-02-22
Mr Guyton was one of the primary Corsair test pilots from the experimental model all the way up to the Korean War and provides many details about the process Vought went through to improve the design over time. I thought the section on testing new aileron modifications on a dailly basis was particularly interesting. He basically had a tape measure extended between his knees. He also had a gauge on the top of the stick that measured the amount of lateral force he was applying to the stick. His job day-after-day was to move the stick an inch to the left and then record the roll rate and the pressure reading in a log book. Then move it and inch to the right and record. Then an inch and a half to the left. Then and inch and a half to the right... He was on a regular diet of airsickness pills. He told stories of having to open the canopy to eject his breakfast and hoping that his mechanics wouldn't find the evidence on the tail group. Very readable book. The sections on dive testing were thrilling and terifying as well. I can't imagine pushing a plane over into a dive that nearly killed you the prior day.
Test pilot Guyton -- a Good Read.......2005-09-27
Boone Guyton includes a lot of interesting information on the development history of the Vought Corsair. The narrative is conventionally done, starting with its role in the Pacific war, then a little bit on his getting started in aviation and in the Navy, and finally his flying experiences with Vought.
Some unexpected and appreciated extras included his description of reassembly testing of Vought dive bombers in pre-war France and his experiences with the "Flying Pancake".
His two accidents flying the Corsair, as well as the loss of some friends, vividly pointed out the hazards of the test pilot life.
Overall, a very good read, interesting and well written.

Book Description
"I recommend the book to anyone interested in the past, present, and future of life on this planet"
-Murray Gell-Mann, author of The Quark and the Jaguar
"Simon Levin, easily one of the finest and most thoughtful contemporary ecologists, has written a fine and thoughtful book. Throughout, Levin portrays the broad history of the field he has participated in so well, and characterizes a range of specific and general models and alternative theories to account for many of the broad features seen. Written with charm, grace, and intelligence, this book richly deserves a wide audience."
-Stuart Kauffman, Founding General Partner, Bios Group, L.P., and author of At Home in the Universe
Customer Reviews:
Intelligent, But NOT Alarmist In The Least! Should Be Required Reading Before Graduating College!.......2005-11-21
This book is written by a world renown, Princeton University biologist. I found it to be very thorough and quite inspiring. One of my favorite passages: "Thus, biodiversity is distributed, like stars and gasses and dust in the sky, into nebulae and galaxies of determinate and indeterminate structure, producing a picture whose intricacies defy simple discription." Well said! Biodiversity is truly a treasure beyond measure!
Unfortunately for us, kooky consevatives, and their ilk, are attacking science on many fronts, trying, and many times succeeding, in blocking scientific progress. What a shame! Now it's biology that's "alamist." While the globe is warming, glaciers are melting to such a degree, that it's benefiting archeology; human caused extinctions of flora and fauna are reaching epochal proportions; huge area of oceans, lakes, and bays, have dead zones due to the lack of oxygenation; our environmental laws, here in the States, such as the Endangered Species Act, are under constant attack by Neanderthals in Congress; ad nauseum, the rest of us should just bury our collective heads in the proverbial sand! But when an emminet biologist tells the truth about where our planet's precious biodiversity is heading, he's "alamist."
This one of the most apolitical books I've ever read! But I'm certainly glad the author didn't have his book vetted by conservative lunatics, or their corporate and government allies!
intelligent but alarmist.......2002-07-19
Levin has produced a rich, nuanced and detailed account of how complexity theory may further our understanding of ecological processes. He does not shy away from the tough questions: How do ecosystems assemble themselves? What is the relationship between an ecosystem's structure and function? Does evolution increase the resiliency of an ecosystem? In addressing these and other questions, Levin offers both real world examples and sophisticated theory. Regrettably, Levin often fails to distinguish between what he knows as a scientist and what he has decided to take on faith based on the statements of environmentalist advocacy groups. As a result, the book is a strange amalgam of excellent "popular" science and overearnest environmental alarmism.
Broaching an important topic.......2000-03-08
Fragile Dominion addresses an important topic, biodiversity. It discusses the use and development of models, particularly a certain type of mathematical model, for better understanding the biosphere. The emphasis on the effects of environmental degradation on the human condition and the call to "think locally" are vital if real progress is to be made in bettering the "commons."
Levin rationally discusses the Gaia hypothesis and touches upon subjects such as fitness landscapes in population genetics, evolutionary stable strategies, the evolution of altruism, disturbance and recolonization in forest and tidal systems, self-organizing criticality, and the important notion that pattern and process are not necessarily the same everywhere.
Throughout the book, Levin effectively uses economic examples, such as diversity in a stock portfolio, as parallels for ecological systems.
One drawback is that the book's level of mathematical and ecological sophistication is perhaps aimed a bit too high for the popular audience for which it is intended. Conversely, it is pitched too low for use in a scholarly setting.
It should be noted that the mathematical aesthetic for this work comes from only one school of thought, that of the Santa Fe Institute.
A delightful read for the scientist and non-scientist alike........1999-07-25
I have known Levin just short of 30 years. He has been my mentor, my friend, my protector, and my pride. The eloquent prose and playful humor within his novel echoes the past 4 decades of Levin's teachings. It is a biographical chronicle of a lifetime of colleagues and their works, an adoration of classical music, and a relentless passion for mental conundrums and for quizzing for sport.
Levin's tireless devotion to accrue knowledge and to interact with each of his colleagues and students at universities and workshops around the globe has armed him with the intuit and insight which he imparts in Fragile Dominion. Levin is known for humbling his opponent on the squash court, for his command of biology and mathematics, and for his hilarious antics and quick wit. This revered scientist will now be known for synthesizing the field of ecology in a powerful, succinct novel. A delightful read for the scientist and nonscientist alike, Fragile Dominion, like the life about which it provides commentary, is worth the ride.
This book won't be read by everone, BUT IT SHOULD BE!!!.......1999-06-22
I, not being educated in ecology and environmental sciences, still found this book to be timely, informational and educational. The author presents his and other authoritys' complex environmental theories and ideas with brilliant, entertaining and even funny analogies which I as a naive observer could understand. From his "Ecological Scrabble", falling cows (cows were not designed to fly, of course), fast food establishments as an example of functional meta-groups, his own office desk as "self-organized system", to the common message "think globally, act locally"--- (Levin encourages us to think LOCALLY as well, to be responsible), the author concludes with a valid to-do list of action items (eight "commandments" which I found to be applicable to another environment which is currently thriving- the INERNET...)If we don't take appropriate action to protect the diversity of our environment, we could end up like the starfish, if the mussels were to takeover the rocks,, how does one eat baked starfish? Parmagiana or Marsala?
