In order for a book to succeed in presenting a theory of architecture, it must address aspects of imagination and creativity as well as the channels one can use to achieve truly significant architectural design. Poetics of Architecture explores the fundamental theories of Modern and Postmodern design and attempts to reconcile all that is worthwhile in these two movements into a new inclusivist attitude toward architecture. Anthony C. Antoniades looks at the many intangible and tangible channels one can harness in creating architectural design. By opening up architecture to the full range of creative influences, he tries to help readers produce designs that are richer on spatial, sensual, spiritual, and environmental levels. Some of the intangible channels to creativity explored in the book include fantasy, metaphor, the paradoxical and metaphysical, the primordial and untouched, poetry and literature, and the exotic and multicultural. Among the tangible channels covered are history and the study of precedents, mimesis and literal interpretation, geometry, materials, and the role of nature. The author presents rich and imaginative discussions of these various channels, explaining which were favored during the Modern and Postmodern movements and clarifying his theoretical analyses through the use of many vivid examples, tables, and illustrations. Included among the examples in the volume are many distinguished projects and theories by a wide range of noted architects such as Asplund, Aalto, Utzon, Pikionis, Barragín, Pietilä, Predock, and Legorreta, who are latecomers to the attention of the media. Antoniades also provides fascinating material on the study of architectural biographies as a means of achieving an all-inclusive creativity in architectural design. Highly original yet based on solid principles, Poetics of Architecture will help architects, designers, and students increase their versatility and creativity in the studio. It will also deepen their understanding and appreciation of the creative process and its many influences.

A "Best of Colored Pencil" with How - To's.......2001-11-18
The best way to describe all the books in this series is a "Best of Colored Pencil" but combined with a short how-to essay showing how each featured artist approached the painting. The approach of the book was simple. A group of artists were each given one of three landscape photos and then asked to create a colored pencil painting using the photo as a reference.
The variety of interpretations was inspiring. One entry particularly delighted me. One lady must have seen her landscape photo as a reminder of China or Japan. The resulting landscape she created from the photo took on a beautiful Oriental quality. Each artist listed the materials they used, the colors used and most had a few step-by-step thumbnail sized photos of the pictures in progress as well as the final painting in larger format. I most treasure it simply because the creative responses to something as simple as the same 3 photos lead to so many different results. Books like this are invaluable for helping to inspire creative ideas - especially if you're suffering from "blank page" syndrome. My one and only wish is that it had been longer...it's that good. All in all, a very worthwhile book to own.

My husband and I love Crankshaft! It may be because I teach and can identify with the topic or because my husband is a curmudgeon in training. Whatever the reason, Crankshaft tickles our funnybones. Our local paper doesn't get him, so we have to depend on collections--does anyone know if there'll be another one soon??

It's a shame that this excellent strip isn't reprinted in its entirety in this collection. At times, it appears only one day's continuity is presented in a story arc that originally went on for a number of days. In future, it is to be hoped these collections will be complete - for Crankshaft is certainly worth it - as I'm sure Ed himself would tell you in no uncertain terms!

The responsible existence within our environment equates to actually having an environment that one wishes to live in. Billy Proctor's story, or rather, chronicles of his existence (and family, relatives and friends) of off the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada and how it has changed over the last 50 years inspires one to start treating our environment with respect and courtesy.
It is a harsh, unforgiving and yet tranquil look upon what has been described as one of the most beautiful and diverse coastlines in the world. Once capable of supporting those who lived upon and around it, and used its bounty with skill. Technology, visitors and a lack of vision have poached upon it, to the brink of extinction of many of its species.
To love where you are, the majesty of your surroundings, and witness its potentially irreversible destruction.
It is a grand book about a grand place, that may be, shortly, changed forever.

As a special needs foster parent of six years I've had to solve my childrens' issues pretty much on my own. I came across "Families at Risk" by accident. I'm happy to say it hasn't been out of my arms reach for two weeks.It is full of much needed information like: *Tips on how to help children express anger in a safe way. *Emotional stages that children go thru and how to handle them. *Parents personal stories. *Uplifting quotes. *Positive discipline techniques. *How to document on your children. *Establishing family rules. A Thoughtful Response to the Spanish Tragedy.......2007-03-26
Franz Borkenau's book titled THE SPANISH COCKPIT is a careful study of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Borkenau's book examines two years of this war (1936-1937),and Borkenau is clear that this book is not a comprehensive study of the entire war. Borkenau is also clear that he was only able to examine the "Republican" side and not the side of Franco's Philangists.
Borkenau stated that he was sympathetic to the "leftest" during the Spanish Civil War. Yet, his account is an honest attempt to examine the Republican side and present their successes, excesses and failures. Borkenau gives a surprising detailed account of the "leftest" opposition in 1936 when many of the lower classes rebelled against the army insurrection to topple the Spanish Republic. This rebellion led to the emergence of various political "leftest" parties who in their opposition to Philangists, also opposed each other.
Borkenau cites the Spanish Anarchists who showed remarkable courage. But Borkenau also documents their poltical, excesses, cruelty, and massacres. He makes the arguement that the Spanish Anarchists may have been their own worst enemy. Their massacres of opponents including Catholic clergy caused other Spaniards to fear the Anarchists. The looting and burning of Catholic churches plus their executions of land owners and businessmen antagonized too many people. Sometimes an uncontrolled zealot is the enemy's best briend.
Borkenau also discusses the chaotic military situation. What surprised this writer is Borkenau's knowledge of "military science." He cites examples of courage as well as chaotic lack of organization. For example, Borkenau is clear that at times the Anarchists showed courage while at other times they unnecessarily retreated and showed cowardice.
Borkenau gives the Soviet Communists and Spanish Communists credit for saving the Republican Government in Spain. The Anarchists were too disorganzied and resented. The Soviet Communists provided the arms and political unity necessary to stand up to Franco's Phalangists. Borkenau is clear that the Spanish and Soviet Communists undermined and eventually purged the Anarthists.
What may surprise readers is that there were times that the foreign supporters of the Spanish Republic were resented by their comrades. One should note that Franco's Phalantists also resented their German and Italian comrades. The Spanish may have considered their civil war as a family affair and dispute. Borkenau was obviously not sure who would win the Spanish Civil, but did offer some reasons why the Spanish Republicans did lose. The Spanish Republicans and their "leftest" supporters were not united, and the purges within the ranks of the "leftists demonstrated such disunity.
Borkenau also makes a case that attacks on the Catholic Church were useless and counterproductive. The Spanish Catholic Church was corrupt and lost support of many Spanish. However, as Borkenau notes, where the Catholic clergy took their vocations seriously and helped the people, the Catholic Church was strong. Considering that many Spanish were Catholic if in name only, purges and executions of the Catholic clergy may have cost the Republican Government valuable support.
Borkenau's book is similiar to Orwell's HOMAGE TO CATALONIA. Both writers had a good understanding of the political problems of the "leftests," and readers have better insight to the Spanish Civil War.
Borkenau hints that all Franco had to do was to wait for the opponents to exhaust their efforts in fighting each other making his victory easier.
Both Borkenau and Orwell left Spain with respect for the Spanish people. They also respected the independent spirit of the Spanish who basically wanted to be left alone. The Spanish were not interested in being ruled by managers, industrialists, etc. and were just as suspicious of these "progressive" forces as they were of big landowners.
On pages 299-300, Borkenau states that the Spanish valued beauty, love, honor, and friendship which were more important than efficiency that mechinization promised. In other words, historians and journalists were unable to give a clear picture because of preconceived notions of what Spain should be rather than what Spain is.
George Orwell's opinion.......2005-04-28
That George Orwell recommended this book speaks for itself. In a letter dated August 1, 1937, still energized and deeply emotionally involved in the situation after his stint in the POUM militia, he wrote -
"...I was lucky enough to get out of Spain, but many of my friends and acquaintances are still in jail and I am afraid there is the greatest fear that some of them will be shot, not for any definite offence but for opposition to the Communist Party. If you want to keep in touch with Spanish affairs, the only paper you can more or less rely on [to] tell the truth is the New Leader. Or if you come across it read an excellent book that appeared recently called 'The Spanish Cockpit' by Franz Borkenau."
Travels in Republican Spain........2004-04-04
For those who have trouble with understanding the political divisions in Republican Spain, this is a great book. One can then understand the Republicans, Anarchists, POUM, Communists, and the Catalan parties because of Borkenau writings. For the vast majority of the general population, this read is very difficult. In addition, factor in Borkenau's leftist leanings, and you have a justification of all the attrocities of the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War. During that time, if you were a priest, factory owner or manager, or a significant landowner, the penalty was a firing squad. The author wants to impart on his readership that it was right to execute these people as well as tell how bad Franco's side was. My viewpoint was that neither side were angels, and one was as bad as the other. Only at the end when Borkenau was arrested by the Republican police did he start writing about the terrorism of the state. He should have been writing about it when the various political parties ransacked the churches and killed the priests. At least Franco did not pretend to be what he was not.
I would not recommend this book to the average reader. It is a difficult read with all the political discourse. I did learn a lot about the various political divisions in Republican Spain and in this case, the book was informative.

An eyewitness account of the Spanish Civil War written by one of the most acute observers to be in Spain during those bloody and crucial years. Franz Borkenau was a young Austrian, brought up a Catholic although of Jewish descent. Disillusioned with communism and Marxism, he considered himself a democratic liberal. It is through these eyes that he provides us with this unique insight into the political and social conflicts that no book written today can hope to achieve.

This was a very good book. I had not known much about the accident so I purchased the book to find out more. I was surprised at how many survived and how the accident actually happened. I would read it again.
Skillfully written.......2006-11-07
Mr. Moscow's skill in reportage is outstanding. His chronological account of the Andrea Doria tragedy is compelling, with a good balance of human and technical accounts. In 1959, it was the bible of the Andrea Doria-Stockholm collision. When I first read it years ago, I believed Mr. Moscow's explanations.
Since then, new information of what really happened on July 25-26, 1956, has been studied via technology. I wish that the most recent edition of Collision Course had reviewed some of this new evidence. As an eyewitness to the historic event, and having survived it along with my family, I have researched much of the information available to nautical scientists, maritime lawyers, and survivors. Armed with the data which reveals the truth about the tragedy, I know longer believe previous explanations about what caused the collision. Nevertheless, this book makes for an interesting read because it is skillfully written.

Tragedy off Nantucket.......2006-01-03
Around midnight on the night of July 25, 1956, the Italian ocean liner "Andrea Doria" was struck by the Swedish-American liner "Stockholm" in heavy fog off Nantucket Island, sinking the next day. In one of the most dramatic rescue operations at sea, over 1,600 passengers were saved (52 died) as three nearby ships responded to the disaster. A true luxury liner, the "Andrea Doria" was on its 51st voyage to New York from Italy when the "Stockholm" struck her starboard side, slicing it open and losing her own bow in the process. The "Doria" listed dangerously on her side, but didn't go down immediately. SOSes were responded to by the "William H. Thomas," the "Cape Ann," and the outward-bound "Ile de France," which came onto the scene with all her lights blazing, giving hope to the floundering "Doria" passengers.
This is the second edition of this book, and Moscow has added a chapter on salvage attempts of the "Doria." At first it was hoped the ship could be raised, but it seemed too big and heavy for that. But many of the passengers aboard the ship were very wealthy, and much had been made of the valuable jewelry and other precious items that now rested in 225 feet of water. With new diving techniques and equipment, divers have been able to survey the wreckage in person and recover numerous items.
The accident went to trial, of course, to determine liability, but before it could be completed, both parties settled out of court. Moscow recounts the story with clarity and balance; like the journalist that he was he informs the reader and does not try to amaze us with hyperbole or purple prose. The book retains a power, therefore, based on the facts of the event and not the author's imagination or bias. Credible and informative - well done.

This book provides a very useful introduction to key debates in and about behavioral genetics. A nice range of topics and perspectives is provided, many by leaders in the fields of biology, psychology, sociology, ethics, etc. Several articles (such as those by tobin, duster, and carson) are extremely insightful and informative, and purchase of the book is worthwhile for the articles alone.
(If only it were in paperback!)
But, like many edited volumes that cover "hot" topics, this book suffers from a lack of coherence. As noted by the professional reviewer, one must wonder to what "clash" the editors refer - even when contained in the same volume, authors of different perspectives seem to talk past each other rather than "clash," and the editors don't really put the debates in a perspective that illuminates the perceived relationship between the two constructs of biology and culture. Indeed, the book jacket reveals the focus to be quite different than advertised: "Throughout, [the authors] focus on two basic concerns: the quality of the science behind behavioral genetic claims and the need to formulate an appropriate, ethically defensible response when the science turns out to be good." While this is certainly a worthwhile topic, it is not nearly as intellectually challenging or interesting as the title promises. Nevertheless, some selections deliver.
