Book Description
From Sonoma wine country in the north to sundrenched La Jolla in the south, and from Malibu's seaside enclaves to Palm Springs nestled in the desert, California's distinctive regions are home to many of the world's most stunning swimming pools.
Since the ancient times, when manmade baths enhanced the gardens of Egyptian nobles, pools have been built as the ultimate symbols of luxury and leisure, providing a means of capturing one of nature's most elusive elements. Soon after the pool arrived in America in the nineteenth century, California became a mecca for pool owners, where many advances in pool design have been made over the last century.
Reflections on the Pool presents 40 perfect pools in 100 brilliant color photographs. These include the vibrant, Mexican-style architectural design of Ricardo Legorreta and the avant-garde, sensational creations of John Lautner, and illustrate the theories of the renowned landscape designers Thomas Church and Isabelle Greene.
Each section of the book features a type of pool, or an element of pool design. Pools imitating nature, lap pools, architectural or highly ornamented pools are discussed in detail, as well as historic pools such as Hearst's Neptune Pool at San Simeon or Thomas Church's vanguard kidney-bean-shaped design of 1948, and other early California examples that set precedents for the pools of today. The introduction outlines technical aspects of design, and gives a brief history of the pool, including the influence of Hollywood on its popularity.
Whether you own a pool or wish for one, and wherever you live, Reflections on the Pool is a color-infused, fresh, and inspirational display of the boundless possibilities in pool design.

Inspirational and Substantive.......2000-08-10
Detailed analysis of a few each of several different types of pools: lap pools, "natural" pools, indoor pools, famous pools, etc., all in California. Not a construction manual, but full of details worth considering when designing a pool. A must for anyone considering getting a pool on a difficult or very special piece of land.
A must for landscape designers and architects.......1999-05-03
This excelent book is focused exclusively on design. Very inspiring and unique. Do not expect to find anything about maintenance, it is a book meant for designers. A must for landscape designers and architects.
A topnotch swimming pool anthology.......1999-01-27
The photography is fabulous. Many of the pools were designed by the author, but this does not detract from the book. It is well balanced. The chapters include: the natural pool, lap pools, infinity edges, indoor pools, historical pools, among others.
A truly inspirational look at swimming pools.......1998-07-06
A lovely book, plenty of inspirational photography and sufficient detail to inspire the intended pool builder or professional. Coffee table interest

Excellent technique book.......2000-11-07
I live in the Middle East and good instructional art books are hard to come by. A fellow student bought this book while visiting in the states and brought it to class. Well, of course; all the students loved it. We found it so easy to follow and have attempted several of her projects. Which have turned out wonderful. We say here in Jordan, "Shur-kran", meaning thank you, Hazel Soan! You have helped a whole class of, eager for knowledge, students! I recommend it to everyone who wants to start in the watercolor medium. Now I am purchasing my own copy.

Book Description
The twelve interviews in this book cover all aspects of cinematography from pre-production planning to post-production, special effects, aerial photography, and second unit. Each interview gives a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the most popular shots in movies and television shows were lit and captured.
Technically and philosophically oriented, Contemporary Cinematographers on Their Art explores the tools, trends, personalities, and professional achievements of contemporary cinematographers, highlighting the behind-the-scenes struggles of the business of making motion pictures. Each chapter delves into the personal challenges, political properties, inter-departmental interactions, and artistic achievements of the artists who bring scripts to life through their choice of cameras, lights, lenses, filters, gels, and other supporting equipment.
Covering a variety of film and television genres--from soaps to half-hour sitcoms, to cable and network productions and low- and big-budget features--each interview explores the tools cinematographers use to capture their shots, from traditional equipment to innovative camera and lighting "toys," as well as the integration of mechanical and computer graphic effects.

Customer Reviews:
The mix is good........2001-07-09
This book attempts to redress the fact that cinematographers tend to be underrated, even invisible, in the making of films. Even though they are "below-the-line" contractors (they don't participate in the profits of the project), the DP is responsible for the entire look of the show. Rarely are they acknowledged, let alone celebrated alongside Directors or Actors.
Author Pauline Rogers has been a staff writer for International Cinematographer, the monthly magazine of the IATSE local 600 Guild, for over 10 years and as such has enjoyed access to many sets and conversations with many cinematographers. This then is a distillation of her work, containing thirteen in-depth interviews with individual DP's.
Feature Film DP's Dean Cundey (Apollo 13), Donald Burgess (Forest Gump), Roger Deakins (Fargo), Stephen Goldblatt (Batman and Robin), Emmanuel Lubezki (The Birdcage) and Thomas Ackerman (Jumanji), join TV DP's John Bartley (X-Files), Jo Mayer (Good Morning America), Donald A. Morgan (Home Improvement) and Donald M. Morgan (Geronimo), and SFX DP Dennis Muren (Star Wars), Aerial DP David Nowell (Jurassic Park) and Music Video DP Salvatore Totino.
The mix is good. I've read a lot about feature film guys, perhaps most notably in the 1984 book "Masters of Light", but little of contemporary shooters and even less from those working in TV or second-unit and special effects. All have interesting stories of how they got their career breaks and moved up through the ranks, telling interesting anecdotes on how the industry has changed as they go. Many offer technical tips, along with "how we did it" notes from their projects.
If you like reading technical "behind-the-scenes" interviews such as those found in the cinematography magazines, if you like photography and film-making in general, you'll like this book. If there is one coda (and why I give it 4 out of 5 stars), it is that the book seems to have been sloppily edited. This is perhaps understandable given that these are interviews assembled from a number of sessions, probably casual conversations recorded on tape, and which haven't made the translation to print quite as well as they might have. Still, this is a minor point ... both this and the follow-up second book are well worth the cheap price.

Still worth a look........2001-07-09
A follow up to the author's first book, this continues the style of the first and is every bit as good.
DP's interviewed are: 2nd Unit DP Mike Benson (Sliver, Volcano), Peter James (Driving Miss Daisy), Daryn Okada (Lake Placid), TV DP Neil Roach (Of Mice and Men), Commercial DP Ward Russell (Days of Thunder), Nancy Schrieber (Blair Witch Hunt), John Schwartzman (Pearl Harbour), Dean Semler (Dances With Wolves), Dante Spinotti (Heat), Ueli Steiger (Godzilla), and Vilmos Zsigmond (Bonfire of the Vanities).
Unlike the previous reviewer, I think this book is worth it. There are always going to be great DP's missed out (the author apologises for some who didn't make the first volume, due to unfinished interviews), but that just allows for future volumes. However he is correct about the cover ... the image shown here lists far more names than actually made it, and is different in that respect from the cover of my copy.
Don't judge a book by its cover (or a picture of it).......2001-02-08
Although relatively good, this book was overall dissapointing. Of all the cinematographers featured on the cover picture shown above, only a third of them appear in the book. What happened to the great DP's like Tak Fujimoto, Vilmos Zsigmond, Russell Carpenter, Laszlo Kovacs, Dante Spinotti, and Haskel Wexler to name a few?! The book does have some insight, but not enough to make it worth buying. Instead, I recommend you go for its predecessor, "Contemporary Cinematographers on Their Art." Or, if you are looking for a REALLY good book on cinematography, try "Cinematography: Screencraft." Both Wexler and Sven Nykvist are there, as well as geniuses like Darius Khondji ("Se7en," "City of Lost Children," and "Delicatessen") and Janusz Kaminski ("Schindler's List," "Saving Private Ryan," and the upcoming "AI: Artificial Intelligence"). At least these two books will give you a more insightful and rewarding experience than this one.

He has managed to capture on each page, each beautifully illustrated, the true essence of the human species and circumstances that makes life interesting and very funny. You will definitely see someone you know, if not yourself, in this humourous book. Absolutely loved it and recommend it highly.

Great Book!.......2007-05-15
This book really got my son,7, interested in History. He remembers about every detail from it. The character animations are great! I recommend these books especially for probably 7 -10 yr old boys. I think they could get the most out of them.
Book Description
1992 marked the 500th anniversary of the European discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus.
The details of Columbus's ships the Santa Maria, Nina and Pinta remain lost to historians, for the ships were built before the first manuals of shipbuilding were written, and no documentation or illustration has survived. Nevertheless, extensive research has allowed the construction of a number of replicas over the years, and those built for the 1992 celebrations are without doubt the most accurate reconstructions yet.
Many years of research by Jose Martinez-Hidalgo and his successors into the Naos and caravels of the 15th and 16th centuries has allowed a whole new insight into the design and construction of the famous ships of Columbus.
The Anatomy of the Ship series provides the finest documentation of individual ships and ship types ever published.
What makes the series unique is a complete set of superbly executed line drawings, both the conventional type of plan as well as explanatory perspective views, with fully descriptive keys.
Customer Reviews:
overviews and details of historic ships of Columbus discovery.......2005-11-01
Along with the scale fold-out plan on the inside of the jacket with folds at the top and bottom, photographs, models, and diagrams recreate the three historic, legendary ships of Columbus's first voyage to the New World. The work by the noted Spanish maritime historian is the latest in the publisher's series "Anatomy of the Ship." Other historically notable and in a few cases historically momentous ships dealt with in this series in a similar manner are the HMS Beagle and the Endeavor (Cook's ship), the naval cutter Alert, and the more generic Fairmile 'D' Motor Torpedo Boat. An inviting series for naval and maritime enthusiast. Diagrams with a detail familiar from airplane designs, and more relevantly, the skillfully-drawn, aesthetically-pleasing designs of yachts do not stop at the body of the three ships, but extend to individual designs of masts, ship fittings, flags, steering gear, tackle, the smaller landing boats, and other parts of the ships. With this bounty of detailed diagrams and illustrations of the ship parts (e. g., masts and sails), equipment, and other implements the crews would work with and handle, the Columbus voyage comes to life in a unique way.
one book is never enough for three ships.......2000-05-28
The book covers lots of details about all three ships, but misses lots of other details, most probably because there is not enough evidence for such old vessels. Modelers with extreme ambition to build the interior of these ships may be disappointed, but in general the book is a very informative one about the general outlook of the ships. As in all such books, we have to question certain items about the restitution of the ships.

Book Description
In the misty dawn of January 31, 1921, a Coast Guardsman on watch at the Cape Hatteras Life-Saving Station sighted a mighty five-masted schooner, all sails set, wrecked on the treacherous Diamond Shoals. Rescuers rushed to the ship, but when they arrived they found the Carroll A. Deering deserted, with no trace of the captain, Willis B. Wormell, or the crew. When, several months later, a bottle was found on a nearby beach, purportedly containing a note from a crew member who ascribed the schooner's fate to its capture by pirates, a sensational panic in international shipping ensued. The captain's daughter successfully lobbied for a federal investigation, but months of inquiry failed to turn up either the missing crew or a reason for the ship's demise. To this day, the fate of the Deering has remained one of the greatest mysteries of maritime history.
Bland Simpson assembles the known facts into a compelling reconstruction of the Carol A. Deering's final voyage and its baffling aftermath. Using contemporary sources including newspapers, FBI reports, ship's logs, and personal and official correspondence, he weaves together historical narrative with the voices of key participants in the drama. Simpson's haunting chronicle keeps the story of the Deering alive, an apt memorial to the ghost ship and its lost crew.
Customer Reviews:
horrible writing style for a book, almost unreadable.......2005-12-23
I was really looking forward to reading this book over the Christmas holidays. I enjoy reading true, unsolved mysteries but after reading and rereading several pages I gave up.
Reading should be a pleasure and the reader should not have to keep rereading words and sentences to try and decipher what the author is trying to convey.
In reading this book it was like every sentence was overly long with each phrase seperated by commas when it seemed for clarity the sentences should have ended and a new sentence begun.
Also, have you every read a book when you get the impression the author is just trying to show you how intelligent he is by constantly using new uncommon words just to show you, the reader, how vast his vocabulary is? Also I noticed every noun in almost every sentence had to be preceded by about 3 descriptive words when one would have been fine most of the time.
Paragraph after paragraph has sentences like this:
"The gusting January wind blew spray and sand at them, and the damp sand gathered and caked upon the three foot, wooden spoked wheels, and the sea oats and grasses around them bent seaward, as the men and their boat slowly dragged through the dunes and over the open seabeach, the half-dozen men and the one beast drawing forward as if they next intended, like poseidon of old, to plough the very sea itself."
ALSO
"In the wet sand below the tideline the men halted and unhitched the front set of wheels from the boat carriage and led the mare forward into the shallow surf that was sheeting rapidly beneath tem, till the wheels were clear and the front fell into the water and made a skid down which the boat would go, and one of them walked the mare around and away, pulling now just the wheels, till she too was clear and unburduned and, standing alone and apart from the surfmen, looked away from them and their incompcomprehensible task".
Page after page of reading this type of writing becomes so tedious and frustrating you just give up and go on another book.
Just to be fair I want to let the readers of this review know I also ordered from Amazon two 900 page books, Shattered Swords(about the Battle of Midway) and Ultimate Sacrifice(about the Kennedy Assination)and I would wake up in the middle of the night and go back to reading both of these books because they were so well written.
Simpson's Best Yet.......2002-10-16
I started this book on a Saturday at 1:00 pm, and put it down, finished, eight hours later (and jumped right into "...Nell Cropsey" by author same. This is simply a must-read for any lover of shipwreck stories, mysteries, or American history...and particularly for anyone (like myself) who's fallen in love with coastal North Carolina. Thanks Bland!
Book Description
Lying in only twenty-five feet of water in a small gulf off the coast of Panama, a shipwrecked vessel managed to escape detection for centuries before it was discovered in the mid-1990s. In 2002, Klaus Brinkbäumer and Clemens Höges, journalists with the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel and also amateur divers, were the first to assemble a team of experts to analyze the remains. They determined that it was not only the oldest wreck ever found in the Western Hemisphere, but also very likely the remains of the Vizcaína, one of the ships Christopher Columbus took on his last trip to the New World.
The Voyage of the Vizcaína, set to be published on the five-hundredth anniversary of Columbus's death, combines investigative journalism, archaeology, and historical re-creation to give us the fascinating story-and startling truths-behind Columbus's final attempt to reach the East by going west.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing research!.......2007-09-19
This book is not the easiest read. That said, it contains amazing detail about Columbus and his several voyages to the new world. I felt the book delivered a good feel for the man and for the times. A tremendous amount of research has been done on Columbus over the centuries and this book seems to touch on the major findings and integrates them well into the overall story. I was amazed at the amount of information to be had and how little I actually knew about Columbus and the history surrounding his discovery of the new world.
Lots of historical facts that will intrique you.......2007-08-14
In the mid-1990s, divers discovered the wreck of a large ship just off the coast of Panama, feeding the rumors that this might be the remains of one of the ships from Columbus's final voyage. Columbus was able to persuade Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille to give him a fleet of four ships in 1502 to return to the New World in search of more riches. Although he reached the Americas, his ships, all victims of shipworms eating through the hulls' wood, began to sink one by one. Columbus reported abandoning the fourth ship, the Vizcaina near Portobelo.
It was said that this ship has three masts and a loading capacity of fifty tons. But when divers went searching, they couldn't immediately determine that the abandoned ship off the bay in Playa Damas was the Vizcaina because of the contents of the ship and the relative integrity of the ships structure.
The authors combine Columbus's history, and the discovery of the ship buried beneath the ocean for decades. Divers and archeology experts are quoted throughout the book, which makes it a bit of a hybrid historical read. The past and present converge by finding the Vizcaina. Yet, it's a true adventure whether you like history or archeology. The history of the man who founded the New World is fascinating as he was a true adventurer.
Armchair Interviews says: Thrilling historical, yet scientific reading that leaves you satiated with a host of historical facts and awe about modern archeology.
Gripping Story - Misleading Title.......2006-07-24
This is a truly exciting read. Although the title and subtitle both suggest that the book is mainly about the Vizcaina, in fact, only about 20% of it contains discussions that directly pertain to that ship; most of these discussions deal with efforts towards determining whether the wreck that was found in the Bay of Playa Damas (Panama) is indeed the Vizcaina. Naturally, when something of such historical importance is found, some form of politics must step in to play its important frustrating role of slowing down, with utmost efficiency, any exciting archaeological progress; this case is no exception. However, the main bulk of the book is about Christopher Columbus: his life, his travels and his adventures. Also presented are fascinating outlines of current disputes as to his true origins as well as where his bones are currently located. Published in 2006, this is an English translation of a book that was originally published in German in 2004. Although the original German title seems to be more appropriate than the current English one, the translation is well done in the sense that the writing is so clear and engaging that the book is very difficult to put down. It will likely be indispensable reading for most history buffs, but it can be enjoyed by anyone.

The first generation of postwar British labor historians tended to be preoccupied with working class activism. The history of the working class concentrated on trade unions, left-wing politics, parties, and activists. This book attempts to chart not only this struggle, but to describe and analyze the rich and varied tapestry of working class history as a whole. John Benson examines work, wages, incomes, and the cost of living; family, kinship, and community relations; the individual in the context of nation and class; and the labor movement in all its aspects.
