              Book Description

Bernd and Hilla Becher have profoundly influenced the international photography world over the past several decades. Their unique genre, which falls somewhere between topological documentation and conceptual art, is in line with the aesthetics of such early-twentieth-century masters of German photography as Karl Blossfeldt, Germaine Krull, Albert Renger-Patzsch, and August Sander. Framework Houses, their first and most famous book, was originally published in Germany in 1977 and quickly went out of print. This new edition of that classic work takes advantage of reproduction and printing technologies not available in 1977.

Most of the houses in the book were built between 1870 and 1914 in the Siegen region of Germany, one of the oldest iron-producing areas of Europe. The houses were built by immigrants who came to work in the mines or blast furnace plants. In 1790 a law was enacted to save wood for iron production by preventing its excessive use for house-building. The law prescribed the amount of lumber structurally required and forbade the construction of elements serving only ornamental purposes. It also specified the maximum strength for beams, sills, cornerposts, and studs. A functional framework, combined with neoclassical proportions, determined the new type of house; it was also applied to other buildings such as barns, churches, schools, inns, shops, factories, and mine structures.

5 out of 5 stars Early Bechers at their most lyrical.......2001-09-15

With the recent interest in German wunderkind photographers Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff and Thomas Struth (known collectively as 'Struffsky') its particularly telling to see early work by their mentors Bernd and Hilla Becher. Framework Houses is among their earliest work, with the bulk of it dating from the early sixties through the seventies. The virtually patented Becher formula of typology is already in place (back at a time when Robert Adams was still a struggling English major): same flat viewing angle, precisionist approach and shadowless light. Taken individually, the photos are deadpan documents of an architectural type, but the strength of the Becher's work has always lay in the collective. The effect of seeing page after page of images so similar, yet individual, is an astonishing rendering of a past industrial age. This rendering is underlined in the last section of the book where the images are grouped in the famous Becher grids. Where this body departs from their other series of factories, water towers, et al, is that while the houses are part of an industrial region, they aren't industrial structures. Other series describe the 'what' of function, but these domestic forms also include a possible 'who' of the people that reside there. An interest in pattern is evident, too. The graphic rendering of shingle siding or dark timber against light stucco is a surprisingly lyrical play on theme and variation, where the grid of halftimbers begins to deviate from strict rationality. In the overall collective, this line quality becomes almost as giddy as a Paul Klee etching. This series is likely the least typical of the Becher's work, but in my opinion, is the most compelling.

                  Description:
Existing arguments suggest that Human Resource (HR) departments should deliver in-house the HR practices that are core to their competitiveness and outsource those HR practices that are peripheral to their primary objectives. While intuitively appealing, researchers and practitioners have been slow to define exactly which HR practices are core and/or peripheral. In this paper we explore factors that influence this distinction. Specifically, we discuss how a firm's strategic orientation and the HR function's primary orientation influence the relative importance of HR practices to a firm's competitiveness. We then discuss operational factors that influence the feasibility as well as likelihood that different delivery options (e.g, in-house versus external) will be utilized by HR departments. We focus on factors pertaining to the availability of different options, HR activity related factors, the role of integrated access to information technology, and the external environment in this analysis. We then discuss theoretical and practical implications of using different delivery options within HR.

A delightful little book, perfect stocking stuffer. Wonderfully imaginative. I laughed out loud at several of the pictures, not something I do easily. Intend to keep my first edition. Who knows? Fifty years from now this could be a real collectible. Whenever you need a pick-me-up, you can just pull out this little gem and start perusing. Bound to take you mind off your troubles.

5 out of 5 stars This is an essential reference book for all travellers.......1999-03-01

This book gives you a plain English overview of all the major illnesses which may affect the traveller and is very easy to understand. I found the appendices particularly useful as these provide you with information such as drinking water safety and the relative risk of disease country by country. Interestingly, the book also gives advice on accident avoidance and other less obvious hazards (e.g. UV light and acute mountain sickness). If you want a book that you can rely on to give you the facts while 'in the field', I would highly recommend this one.

Well researched and presented essays on Arkansas in the Civil War. While the volume is rather short and the discussions of the military operations lacking in some detail there is still much completeness in the work especially regarding the civilian aspect of the war.

4 out of 5 stars Good Military Overview of the Civil War in Arkansas.......2006-12-27

By most accounts, the fighting in Virginia and in the Western Theater was far more important to the eventual outcome of the Civil War than that which occurred west of the Mississippi River. What many people do not know is that Arkansas was also the scene of bloody struggles, not only battles but smaller clashes involving guerillas as well. According to editor Mark Christ, the state of Arkansas saw "at least 771 Civil War military actions", a number which ranks the state fifth in total number of battles, actions, and skirmishes. The purpose of Rugged and Sublime, then, is to help preserve battle sites within the state's borders by educating readers on "the important role Arkansas played in the Civil War." This book is a solid overview of the military history of the state which at times touches on the political and social aspects of the conflict as well.

As a member of the middle tier of slave states, Arkansas was one of the last to secede from the Union, doing so on May 6, 1861. From this point forward, Arkansas was the scene of both military and civil conflict. A significant minority of Arkansans were content to either side with no one or even support the Union cause, a situation which caused quite a bit of consternation among Arkansas Confederates. The year of 1862 saw quite a bit of fighting in northwestern Arkansas, including the Battles of Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove. The first occurred in the spring and the other late in the year, but both resulted in Confederate losses. In between those fights Earl Van Dorn had stripped the Trans-Mississippi of almost all her defenders. Thomas Hindman, the man responsible for rebuilding a new force from scratch, had managed this task through means both legal and otherwise. The losses at Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove combined with Federal advances in the eastern portion of the state which took Arkansas post and threatened Little Rock meant all of northern Arkansas was in Union hands by the end of the year. The year 1863 was not much better for Rebel hopes. It saw the fall of Vicksburg in Mississippi and the loss of Little Rock as well. Walker's Texas Division and other Trans-Mississippi Confederates tried to attack Ulysses S. Grant's supply line on the west side of the Mississippi River with little success. After the fall of Little Rock, the Confederates were reduced to holding on in the southwestern portion of the state as 1863 ended. The next year saw Steele's Camden Expedition get underway from Little Rock. Camden and his Union force were to join up with Nathaniel Banks' expedition in Shreveport, Louisiana after it had ascended the Red River. Steele did not attend to his supply line and his command was almost destroyed after Confederate troops attacked at several spots including Jenkins' Ferry, fresh off their victories over Banks on the Red River. Confederate General Sterling Price launched an ill conceived invasion of Missouri from Arkansas in late 1864 that resulted in the destruction of two thirds of his force. Arkansas was nearly devoid of a Confederate presence save for guerilla forces from this point forward. An appendix covers various Civil War sites by county, which was another good way to educate readers on the history Arkansas has to offer. Maps were included on all major battles, but they rarely ventured below division level. Considering the focus and level of the book, the maps were sufficient to educate the reader while inviting further study of more detailed books in the future.

Rugged and Sublime is divided into an introduction and five chapters, with almost all written by different authors. All of these individuals, Kenneth Story, Mark Christ, Carl Moneyhon, William Shea, Thomas DeBlack, and Daniel Sutherland, live and work in the state of Arkansas or have written extensively on this subject. Carl Moneyhon takes the chapters on 1861 and 1865, which seem to be focused less on military events and more on secession and the beginnings of Reconstruction, respectively. William Shea covers 1862, including the fight at Pea Ridge. Shea co-authored an excellent book on this fight with Earl Hess. Thomas DeBlack, the author of the 1863 chapter, is a graduate of Southern Methodist University with a focus on the history of the American South. The 1864 chapter is taken by Daniel Sutherland, a professor of history at the University of Arkansas and an author an Arkansas regimental as well. Mark Christ, the editor, is the Director of Development for the Department of Arkansas Heritage, with headquarters in Little Rock. I highlight the backgrounds of these authors to point out their unquestionable qualification to write an overview of the Civil War in the state of Arkansas. It is to their credit that these chapters flow relatively seamlessly despite the varied authors. The book is a very good introduction to the Civil War in this area, even touching on some actions which bordered the state in Missouri, Mississippi, and elsewhere. The narrative was detailed enough to remain interesting while not overwhelming those readers new to the subject. The focus of these authors was mainly on the military events which occurred in the state, and this is not by accident. Rugged and Sublime was written as a way to draw attention to Arkansas' Civil War battlefields and the ongoing development of the Arkansas Civil War Heritage Trail. I was mildly surprised by the lack of a bibliography, though the authors do provide notes for their respective chapters. Inclusion of a detailed bibliography would have been an excellent opportunity to point interested readers in new directions. Shea's book on Pea Ridge, Michael Banasik's large volume on the Prairie Grove Campaign, and Michael Forsyth's coverage of the Camden Expedition are just a few of the books that could have been highlighted. This was unfortunately a bit of a missed opportunity.

Rugged and Sublime is a solid overview of the military aspects of the Civil War in Arkansas. It is aimed mainly at those new to the subject, but can be read and appreciated by more experienced readers as well. Students of the Trans-Mississippi Theater will find this to be a readable if not indispensable addition to their library of books on the subject. Those Civil War buffs more into the social and political aspects of the war may not find what they are looking for considering the mostly military subject matter. As a reader who is interested in the military side of the conflict, I found this book to be a very good summary of Arkansas' battlegrounds.

This is the best book yet published on the Civil War in Arkansas. What most people don't know is that Arkansas ranks 5th in the number of battles, actions, and skirmishes during the Civil War.
The authors do a great job of filling the blanks about what went on in the state during those terrible years.

Great book for an overview of the Civil War in Arkansas. At last a book that covers many of the ignored battles and skirmishes in this often overlooked theater of the Civil War.

                                          Book Description

This study analyzes and compares Polish and Russian texts of travel to the Romantic and Biblical Orient and situates Polish and Russian Orientalism within the broader context of contemporary post-colonial studies. At the same time, it elucidates the shortcomings that arise when such theories are applied whole cloth to the Polish and Russian cases. In the nineteenth century, scholarly and literary Orientalism enjoyed great popularity in Eastern Europe, in part because the 'East Europeans' desired to participate as equals in the intellectual life of Europe as a whole. Historically, both the Polish and Russian nations had always existed in close proximity to the Muslim world, and each of them had experienced extensive exposure to a fusion of Western and Eastern cultural traditions. But while the two cultures shared the intersection of Western and native cultural traditions that in turn played a determinative role in their encounters with the East, the growing political empowerment of Russia and the disenfranchisement of Poland differentiated the Polish and Russian perspectives. It is precisely this striking and fascinating power disparity between the two Slavic nations that has inspired this study's juxtaposition of Polish and Russian texts. The records of individual Oriental voyages provided in Polish and Russian works of literary Orientalism document a quest for cultural self-definition. This is the case with Adam Mickiewicz's 'Crimean Sonnets,' Aleksandr Pushkin's Caucasian poetry, and with other nineteenth-century accounts that, in spite of their original popularity, subsequently underwent marginalization. East European records of travel constitute a work of interpretation and translation on several levels. As such they provide us with a fascinating repository of the authors' attempts to locate their own cultures in the intermediary space between the East and the West. Izabela Kalinowska is an assistant professor of Slavic literatures and cultures at Stony Brook University.

                                            Book Description

This collection of readings is complementary to Introduction to Integrational Linguistics (Language & Communication Library, Vol.17), but can be used independently. It brings together for the first time 24 key papers in integrational linguistics, and is intended to serve as a basic reading list for students and others making the first acquaintance with the subject.

Originally published in sources that are for the most part out of print, these papers have been revised and updated by their authors where necessary. They are arranged in six sections: (1) Language and Communication, (2) Language and the Language Myth, (3) Language and Meaning, (4) Language and Discourse, (5) Language and Writing, and (6) Language and Society.

An editorial introduction discusses the individual contributions and their relevance to integrationist theory.

                                                Book Description

Language Teaching demonstrates the relevance of an integrational linguistic perspective to a practical, real-world need, namely the learning of languages. Integrational linguisticsÂ' shunning of both realist and structuralist theories of language, its commitment to an unwavering attention to the perspective of the language user, and its adherence to a semiology in which signs are the situated products of interactants interpretive behaviour, mean that it radically reconceptualizes language learning and language teaching. Detractors have implied that IL is so Â`philosophicalÂ' or Â`theoreticalÂ' an exercise that it has no useful bearing on the practical problems of language learning. These papers refute that misconception. They do so by demonstrating how an IL stance can help disentangle the conflicting considerations and contradictory assumptions that arise in a host of language teaching situations: first, second- and foreign-language classrooms in a diversity of settings (including India, Australia, the United States, and Hong Kong), with different age-groups of students, whether the focus is on speech or writing, and in more informal settings also.

                                                  Book Description

Units, rules, codes, systems: this is how most linguists study language. Integrationalists such as Michael Toolan, however, focus instead on how language functions in seamless tandem with the rest of human activity. In Total Speech, Toolan provides a clear and comprehensive account of integrationalism, a major new theory of language that declines to accept that text and context, language and world, are distinct and stable categories. At the same time, Toolan extends the integrationalist argument and calls for a radical change in contemporary theorizing about language and communication.
In every foundational area of linguistics—from literal meaning and metaphor to the nature of repetition to the status of linguistic rules—Toolan advances fascinating and provocative criticisms of received linguistic assumptions. Drawing inspiration from the writings of language theorist Roy Harris, Toolan brings the integrationalist perspective to bear on legal cases, the reception of Salman Rushdie, poetry, and the language of children. Toolan demonstrates that the embeddedness of language and the situation-sensitive mutability of meaning reveal language as a tool for re-fashioning and renewal.
Total Speech breaks free of standard linguistics’ fascinated attraction with “cognitive blueprints” and quasi-algorithmic processing to characterize language anew. Toolan’s reflections on the essence of language, including his important discussion of intention, have strong implications for students and scholars of discourse analysis, literature, the law, anthropology, philosophy of language, communication theory, and cognitive science, as well as linguistics.

                                                      Description:
There is arguably a parallel between recent ideas within cognitive science about the distributed mind and the development within linguistics known as integrationism, turning on similarities between the critique offered by the former of the 'classical' view of mind and by the latter of the 'classical' view of language. However, at the heart of the integrationist attack on the classical view of language is rejection of the idea that natural languages are codes. This idea appears to be taken for granted by certain cognitive scientists as the basis for explaining not only how language is mentally apprehended by the individual, but also how it facilitates 'second-order cognition'. It is suggested that the language-as-code idea, although prima facie endowed with the attractiveness of common sense, is untenable, and should not figure, at least in the role usually assigned to it, in any inquiry into either language or human cognition in general.

With the famous controversy over the Kuhnian concept of normal science as an example of academic discourse at cross-purposes, the author shows how taking for granted either of the two dominant models of signification can result in a petitio principii or else lead to a frustrating fight against communicational scepticism. In conclusion, there is a suggestion of a possibly helpful theoretical reorientation of thinking about signification and communication.

                                                          Description:
Linking a distributed view of cognition to an integrational perspective on language, learning to talk is presented as an ontogenetic achievement. Examining this as an epigenetic process permits an innovative sketch of how infants come to be heard as producing grammatical utterances. Appealing to 'shallow' or content-free cognition, I show how adjustments by contextualizing bodies allow adult overinterpretations to shape infant doings. Far from needing 'representations', the baby uses joint activity, affect, and self-directed anticipative learning. Humans, then, use affective co-ordination to develop neurophysiological biases for speaking/hearing vocalizations around syllabic structures. This promotes a kind of agency that allows a 2 year old human, like an encultured bonobo, to act in ways that appear to be self-implicating, self-directing, self-regulating and self-serving. Both species can use (what we hear as) abstracta in novel and coherent behaviour. Unlike its wild counterpart, however, a human needs no external computational hardware. Rather, her achievement derives from strategic use of contextualizing bodies to gradually discover the rewards that accrue from taking part in utterance-activity.

                                                            Description:
A central tenet of the integrational view of language and communication is an anchoring in the acting and integrating behaviour of the communicants themselves. In this way the integrational approach has a certain phenomenological slant. What happens when this approach is combined with a 'psychology of linguistic exertion' based upon the descriptions of the stream of thought, and of conception (>acquainting) by William James? Text-examples taken from an internet site for dieters illustrate the combined Jamesian and integrational approach in practice. Some of the examples are also specifically related to some of William James' classical psychological observations.
