East Watercolor.......2006-08-03

At no time in my life did I ever have the desire, let alone the
ability to paint a picture, except possibly a house.
For whatever reason, I have the book and find myself
addicted to following the easy steps the author has compiled.
Once I had started reading chapter one, I found myself working
to the end of the book in one sitting, which gave me the
confidence that I certainly needed to get started with the
paint. After several mishaps, I moved through the book while
painting and I gained even more confidence. Although I am just
a beginner in the art world, I find this book easy to lean on
so to speak in moving from one area of the painting to the
other. I consider it a must for anyone wanting to get started
in the watercolor field of art. If it helped me, it certainly
can help anyone, even those of us who have trouble drawing a
straight line.

This is one of the better books of it's kind that I have found.

Ms. Moses doesn't try to snow people into a false sense of I know it all and you don't.

The instruction is easy to follow and very detailed.

One is benefited greatly and can be helped in the development of their own style.

This is a dream to read because Ms. Moses goes out of her way not to talk over your head.

I have read it from cover to cover and still am learning.

Art is a passion which has beginnings and this has been a great start for me.

Not so easy.......2003-07-08

Despite the aesthetic pleasure one might derive from perusing this book's pages in a bookstore, hoping that this is their key to gorgeous watercolor paintings, this book is not what it claims to be - "easy watercolor." It's definitely more along the lines of "intermediate - or more likely professional - watercolor." Though Moses shares a good deal of her ideas and techniques, the book does not go so far as to answer the challenge of how get to the point of having a painting worthy or even remotely necessary of these techniques. Her how-tos jump, not range from, a ridiculously simple watermelon slice to a street scene in France. This is, all the while, assuming you already know how to draw professionally, seeing as how you've jumped from a slice of watermelon to a deluxe French street. Tutorials will jump from a simple wash of one color to a deluxe painting with loads of colors and intricate details, none of which have been explained or shown in between the process.

The author's own paintings are quite far from captivating; a great deal of things are out of proportion and unintentionally unappealing. Her only two paintings of humans, for instance - one of a little boy, and one of her father - share the exact same pose and the exact same disproportions.

There are, however, helpful value scales, examples of washes, gradations, and principles, if only for the more advanced artist. Which brings me back to my original point - this book is not _easy_ watercolor, and I doubt many beginners that aren't highly skilled aritsts already will find it the right step between knowing nothing and knowing it all.

"Easy Watercolor" was truly inspiring. It contains a wealth of experience set out in an easy to follow format. Not only does it include all the basics but it teaches many great techniques. The content gave me confidence and the artwork gave me inspiration.

This book offers a refreshing look at watercolor painting regardless of the reader's skill level. Detailed instructions are written and illustrated in a most comprehensible manner. The illustrations are step-by-step providing the artist with the insight of the author's years' in watercolor! It is the most all-inclusive, easy to follow art instruction book that I have ever encountered. I recommend it for beginners, intermediate and advanced watercolor artists. IF YOU HAVE A DESIRE TO EMBRACE WATERCOLOR PAINTING, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.

A tragic tale told too late . . . .......2007-05-20

Vincent does an admirable job of telling the story of Eastern European Jewish girls from the shtetl being conned into sham marriages and forced prostitution by an underworld Jewish organizaton. In this book, the events take place mainly in South America, although the practice was (sadly) widespread. It's a relatively unknown story, and I'm glad that Vincent made the effort to relate it.

Unfortunately, nearly everyone connected with the actual events is now long gone. The lack of anything but relatively meager links with the book's personalities is palpable, but Vincent manages to eke out just enough detail to make this book both riveting and personal. I'd love to know exactly how she managed to locate some of the book's photos and some of the more esoteric aspects of the lives of those described, given the unwillingness of nearly anyone to discuss them and (of course) the fact that many of these people led lives which made them difficult to trace.

One imagines that had Vincent been able to conduct her research fifteen or twenty years earlier, a much more in-depth history would have been the result - a pity that no one thought to do it sooner. But one can't fault Vincent for her admirable efforts, and her skill as a writer. The work is partially framed around a couple of encounters with a man who tends to the graves of these now-departed Jewish prostitutes, and it's a nice technique. It's impossible to know what could have been going through the minds of these young and naive village girls as they entered a new world and a special kind of hell - Vincent is wise enough not to speculate too deeply - but the ultimate strength and unity of this community is apparent. One can't help but admire the strength of these poor women; in this sense Vincent performs a real mitzvah, by lovingly memorializing women whose own community turned against them unrepentently.

Interesting but somewhat confusing.......2006-11-10

The subject matter of this book was very enticing but I found it a bit hard to get into. I thought perhaps there would be more of a "story" to this book rather than a documentary. Still a worth read.

An Absolutely and Shocking History of Shtetl Girls forced into prostitution........2005-12-13

"Bodies and Souls" by author Isabel Vincent is a horrifying and compelling book on the young shtetl women from Eastern Europe and Poland abducted into prostitution. Isabel Vincent tells about 3 young women Sophia Chamys, Rachel Liberman, and Rebecca Freedman and the reader follows their story from the villages in Eastern Europe from where they were abducted, to the brothels of South America. The brothels were located in Rio, Buenos Aires, and Argentina. It was a terrible life that these young, innocent girls were brought into by the pimps that posed as "Gentlemen". These "gentlemen" bought or "married" the girls to entice them to South America where they were sold into White Slavery. The Commissioner of Argentina, Alsogaray, along with Rachel Liberman, brought down the empire of the Zwi Migdal who ruled the underworld of white slavery in South America.

As stated in the title for this review, I found this book a shocking part of history that should not be ignored. It is required reading for history and Judaica readers. I cannot urge readers enough to go out and buy this book - it may be upsetting to read, but one should know what happened at this time in history.

Brazil Body and Soul is a 600 page tome that covers Brazil's artistic history from the early 1500's until the 1990's.
The book is filled with intelligentlly detailed writing and artistically lush with photographs.
This is a book (not a skimpy museum catalog) for anyone interested in the art and culture of Brazil; or a useful reference tool for someone interested in the arts of this grand nation.
When you purchase this book, I believe you will pleasantly amazed by the arts throughout the centuries in Brazil. This is not a book for those who only want to look at photos or decorate their coffee tables; this is for those who want to expand their horizons of the Americas.

Followup improves greatly on the original!.......2003-02-20

Last year I read Hall & Kindt's Pistolwhip and thought it was cute, entertaining and a great first effort. I picked up the second volume (not counting the superb Mephisto's Box--a shorter story that packs some great emotional power) expecting more of the same and was floored. The seemingly simple yet complex story and art are still there, but the characters have more depth and the very intriguing references to comics, pulp, noir, et al really add another dimension that I didn't pick up on in the original Pistolwhip. Pick this one up if you enjoy graphic novels, liked the first one, or just want to experience a new kind of storytelling. Plus the index in the back of the book is totally sweet!

I have, had, and will continue to have such respect for Larry Brown--first off, that this man quite simply decided to be a writer one day, and from there worked his butt off to make that happen. His tales of writing several novels and over a hundred short stories before he wrote anything that he considered the work of a writer is quite simply archetypal. When there seems to be some concern about the effect of prodigious MFA program on the state and audience of writing, Larry Brown reminded us that it is work ethic, not education, that makes a writer.

Another great aspect of the legend of Larry Brown is the simplicity of his intent and execution. While the critic looks at writing as a mish-mash of symbols and metaphors removed from intent, Brown saw it from the blue-collar perspective--a story about characters who remind us of ourselves. The connections people have with their environments are direct and substantial--people come from a place, a patch of ground that smells and feels familiar to them; they come from groups of people who help shape them and help them identify who they are.

And it is this last point that this book revolves around. While Brown reminds us in one or two of the essays in this collection of his work ethic in the realm of writing, most of the writing here is about place and the anchor that it provides. We are taken through a tour of blues bars and fishing, of working on a farm and chasing coyotes and helping calves emerge from their mothers and building houses by hand. While some of these essays, for example the tremendously long centerpiece, don't hold a lot of drive to make each page worth turning only after the previous has been soaked up for its every syllable, the simple ethic that speaks volumes is distinctly there.

Of course, there is also the spirit of play that is such a commodity in Brown's work--an essay in second-person about the hardships of a book tour, for example--and this only fuels Brown's pure love for his work. While sometimes I found myself preferring his fiction over his nonfiction, I have been inspired to pick up The Rabbit Factory again, or Joe, just to touch that flavor of Brown all over again.

Perhaps this book is more enjoyable as an occasional read, something to pick up when between books or between episodes of another book, to let the essays sit separately and resound in the mind on their own rather than read one next to the other and hope for overriding connections to progress and develop, but this is no doubt a good reminder of the pure talent we lost when Larry Brown left us.

Beautiful writing.......2007-07-20

After reading Larry Brown's memoir/essay collection "Billy Ray's Farm", I felt so good about it- I mean, it was one of the finest reading experiences I'd had in years, that I decided to write the author and thank him for writing it. That's when I found out that Mr. Brown had passed away. What a fine writer we've lost.

This one was more readable than most of Larry Brown's other works.

On Writing and Ranching.......2002-04-14

"What is it about Oxford [Mississippi] that produces writers?" It's a question Larry Brown, Barry Hannah and John Grisham get asked a lot. Brown says, "They always want to ask about Faulkner and what it all means, being a writer in Oxford, and where all the stories come from....

"I don't know what the answer is for anybody else, and I don't know what caused Faulkner to write," he explains, but "Most times, for any writer, I think it springs from some sort of yearning in the breast to let things out, to say something about the human condition, maybe just to simply to tell a story."

Of this, he knows plenty, for the essays in this memoir - I say "this," as opposed to "his," because I'm sure there will be many more - are stories of his life, so far; as a writer, indulgent father, and reluctant farmer.

Getting back to the question, he supposes it basically boils down to this: "Where do you get your ideas?" His response is "I believe that writers have to write what they know about. I don't think there's much choice in that." Elaborating, he says, "All [Faulkner] was doing was what every other writer does, and that is drawing upon the well of memory and experience and imagination that every writer pulls his or her material from. The things you know, the things you have seen or heard of, the things you can imagine. A writer rolls all that stuff together kind of like a taco and comes up with fiction. And I think whatever you write about, you have to know it. Concretely. Absolutely. Realistically."

Brown has an easy, honest way with language that is as smooth as Mississippi molasses. Describing the region around Tula, where he spent his teenage years, he writes, "The tall cypresses with their knees standing in water were hollow coon castles, the bark worn smooth on one side only from the steady traffic of coons scrambling up in the morning and down at night, regular as dairymen."

Reminiscing about his hunting expeditions with neighbors, he writes, "in the reserves of good memories we all hold, those times are special and seem magical to me, those nights in the woods and those days in the fields, those lessons in the wild."

Hunting is a tradition that weaves its way through Brown's family's generations, one he now shares with his sons: "They bring in ducks and squirrels and deer and doves, and I cook for them as my mother did for me, and they tell me their hunting stories, and I listen to catch their words."

In addition to letting us glimpse his personal life, Brown takes us down the long enduring road he's taken in becoming a writer. Deliberately seeking mentors in his early days as a writer, he found one when a friend lent him a copy of A Feast of Snakes by Harry Crews. He would go on to read everything by the author he could get his hands on, and in the end, he's "grateful that a writer like him walks this earth."

Brown had written five unpublished novels by 1985, "and almost a hundred short stories that had, for the most part, gone begging also." Pulling 24-hour shifts at the Oxford fire department, working odd jobs on his off-days to make ends meet, and writing in his "spare" time, Brown burned one of his novels in his backyard and worked on his rejection-slip collection.

His "apprenticeship period" would span seven years - a relative bargain, considering Crews' lasted 10 - until his first book of short stories, Facing the Music, was accepted for publication.

Brown writes with such a subtle passion. Speaking of his son, Billy Ray, whose farm is the subject of the essay chosen for the book's title, he tells, "The barn leaks. It's an old barn, pretty ragged, but he's tried to fix it up. He's mowed yards since he was twelve years old, and worked as a butcher, and hauled hay, and laid sod, and worked on a hog farm. He's saved his money, and all he's ever wanted is to be a cattleman. And it's always hurt me deep that he has had such bad luck."

Perhaps Billy Ray should take a page from his father's history and realize that with a little luck and a lot of dedication, dreams come true.

Larry Brown gets better with each book published. This book is quintessential Larry Brown. Simple, sparse, and completely accessible. Some people may be surprised at the lighter tones in this book of essays. It just goes to show the honesty in everything Brown writes. I have a little Larry Brown story that I think his fans would appreciate. I had the pleasure of hearing Brown read from Billy Ray's Farm at a bookshop in New York City. By mistake someone in the press printed the time of the reading incorrectly by almost two hours. Two people walked in and were devastated that they missed his reading. One of the employees told them that he was still in the back if they wanted to go talk to them. They were both a little awestruck. They're huge fans of his. After getting up the nerve they went up to them and told them how much his writing meant to them and how sorry they were to miss the reading. So what do you think he did? He took these two people into a corner of the store and read two chapters to them. Only them. It was a great thing to see and it's that quality that comes through in all of his stories. Truth and fiction. He is by far my favorite writer working today. I'm a big fan of Jim Harrison and Harry Crews as well, being from the south. If you haven't read "Fay" yet, pick it up as soon as you can. It's an amazing story. Brown does what all great writers do. He makes you forget that you're reading. Can't wait to see what's next.

Norwegian investigative journalist Alf Jacobsen relates one of the most incredible tales of the Second World War, in which Royal Navy X-craft midget submarines attacked the German battleship Tirpitz in Norway. A daring plan was hatched by the Admiralty to sink Tirpitz using midget submarines to plant high explosive mines beneath the ship's keel. On 22 September 1943, six X-craft midget submarines set out from Scotland to sink the battleship at anchor in Norway. Three never reached the fjord and X5, commanded by Lt Henty-Creer, was presumed sunk by the Germans, so only X6 and X7 made the attack. Both Lt. Donald Cameron in X6 and Lt Godfrey Place in X7 placed their charges successfully, but were forced to surrender. Both were awarded the Victoria Cross. Although Tirpitz was not sunk she was put out of action until April 1944. Lt. Henty-Creer, the commander of X5, and his crew were never seen again. Neither he nor any of his crew received any posthumous gallantry awards. Did X5 actually penetrate the anti-submarine defenses around Tirpitz and lay its explosive charges beneath the battleship? If it did, then Henty-Creer and his crew deserve to be honored for their bravery.

In the past, industrial wastewater treatment primarily focused on the removal of BOD and suspended solids. In recent years, however, the focus has changed to aquatic toxicity, priority pollutants, and volatile organics. This required changes in how we design and operate biological treatment plants. Many existing plants must be retrofitted. New approaches to meet new requirements are discussed in detail. The authors, with a combined experience of sixty years, have presented case studies for a wide variety of industrial wastewaters including pulp and paper, food processing, chemical and pharmaceuticals, and textile wastewaters. Data interpretation and process design are developed through the use of seventeen examples. Procedures for the laboratory and pilot plant generation of process design data are presented. Emphasis is placed on meeting the many new regulations governing industrial wastewater discharges.

A new approach for calculating excess sludge production and oxygen consumption for the oxidation of carbon compounds is discussed. This approach details correct values for various wastewater streams-from very small to very high sludge loads. Derived values are then related to regulatory criteria and process design alternatives. This book also addresses the relationships between the alpha factor and the concentration of mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), as well as engineering issues such as: membrane performance, energy requirements, and the removal performance of membrane systems. The findings in The Membrane Coupled Activated Sludge Process in Municipal Wastewater Treatment support the practical applicability of the MCASP to smaller wastewater operations ranging from modest-sized municipal treatment plants to facilities serving only one structure. In addition, the MCASP process is shown to be applicable in water reuse operations. The Membrane Coupled Activated Sludge Process in Municipal Wastewater Treatment demonstrates that sewage treatment problems for various types of waste streams-from rural to suburban-can be solved with MCASP. Description:
A pilot scale conventional activated sludge was operated for over 600 days to study its effectiveness at further remediating the effluent of an existing industrial site's thermophilic biological treatment stage. During the course of the study, the activated sludge was able to further biodegrade the contaminants in the incoming industrial wastewater in terms of both BOD and nitrogen reductions at varying hydraulic and solids retention times, despite elevated concentrations of soluble copper being present. A limiting hydraulic retention time (HRT) for BOD removal of 1.5 days was observed as well as the loss of nitrification occurred at a solids retention time (SRT) of approximately 6 days. Biokinetic coefficients were determined with the maximum rate of substrate utilization per unit mass of microorganisms, k, of 0.14mgVSS/(mgsBOD-d) and the Monod half velocity constant, K"s, of 9.4mgsBOD/L. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) of the nitrogenous compounds found in this wastewater was observed throughout the majority of the experimentation while the bulk DO in the system was greater than 1mg/L. The activated sludge was estimated to contain soluble copper on the order of 1mg/L throughout the course of operation with no apparent detriment to nitrification. Additionally, the activated sludge was able to biologically remove the main solvents found in the influent wastewater. The removals of trace levels of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) were also observed.
