The Colours of Light is a beautiful, dense little book that showcases English photographer Richard Pare's stunning takes on the respected, influential Japanese architect Tadao Ando. Pare photographed Ando's work over a 10-year period, and with a remarkable consistency has realized the intricacies of Ando's constructed confrontations between architecture and nature. Pare translates this dialogue with great skill in his photographs and easily manages to convey (convert?) the conversations about space, the absence/presence dialectic, that all buildings declaim. In his overview essay at the end of the book, Pare writes: "Space itself is immovable. It has no movement, though all movement is in space. All space is actually static, and potentially dynamic. We conceive space statically, but we experience it dynamically. The space that is rendered in a photograph is a static space of potential movement." His photographs bear out, but overcome, this tension. Tom Heneghan's introduction wonders if Pare's career as a "photographer of architecture rather than an architectural photographer" has enabled him to so keenly grasp the nature of Ando's work. Whatever the reason, this is a remarkable collection. --Mark Thwaite, Amazon.co.uk

4 out of 5 stars A good architectural photography book.......2005-03-17

The value of this book largely depends on how familiar you are with Ando's work. For example, if you have read articles about his Water Temple from architectural magazines, it is really nice to zoom in and take a close look at several details shown in this book. On the other hand, if you don't know Water Temple project, it will be hard for you to catpure the overall structure of this incredible building from this book. Simply put, this book focuses more on photography and details rather than overall structure. You need to study these projects in order to appreciate the details. Of course, the pictures are really nice.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful little book.......2001-11-09

Beautiful little portfolio showcasing some of Tadao Ando's best known work. Richard Pare's photographs are excellent. The book's design is also very elegant in its minimalism. A must have.

3 out of 5 stars ando ando ando.......2001-07-27

Ando's work is splendidly displayed by Pare. But it would be very hard to take a bad picture of one of Tadao's buildings anyway. Great eye candy for anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Ando and Pare - What rice is to sushi!!.......1999-07-26

If you have a slither of appreciation for the finer things on this planet, you definately should not pass up the opportunity to own this title. A book that left me speechless and I mean that!! - 10 Stars -

5 out of 5 stars The Nature of the Unnatural.......1998-04-17

The sublime architecture of Ando, delivered on a haunting polychromatic plate by R. Pare. The photos discover many of the wonderful uses of space and form Ando masters and manipulates to tame light into a force that is nearly unrivaled by any other modern architect. Certainly it makes the oft ludicrous shapes of several (ahem) "Experienced" LA-types appear clumsy and banal (Basque'ing in their own glory perhaps?). Most wonderful is the way in which he can make one look at the 'ordinary' materials used (exposed concrete, etc.), and focus on the forms themselves; or better, to enjoy the materials in their place. Why a '9' rather than a perfect score? Though less artistic, I would have enjoyed a few more full-shots along with the other photos to better put each structure into a perspective understandable by those of us unable to visit the sites in person.

5 out of 5 stars PANAFLEX - BEST IN THE WORLD!.......2003-03-17

If you want to know about big league cameras, you must know about Panavision! Read it from cover to cover and suck up the information. If you plan to compete with the big boy (and big girl) camera assistants and operators, you MUST know this stuff kids! Snatch it up or fall behind. Don't learn the hard way. I require all of my assistant to know this stuff.

    3 out of 5 stars Pana'ed to death.......1999-01-23

With lots of information and many handsome drawings, this is a good source for knowledge of the Panavision system. Undercutting its strength as a technical manual, however, is the irritating propensity of the author to take every available opportunity to convince us that Panaflexes are the best in the world at EVERYTHING (which any assistant who has spent time with the other systems can tell you is bunk). What's needed here is more grit, less marketing.

Sidney Harris offers that rare treat: thoughtful, well-informed humor. This time he aims his barbs at the medical profession. His one-panel drawings cover the whole range, from surgery and office practice to psychiatry and research. If you really want to know what the mice and microbes think, let Harris be your interpreter.

The end of the book came way too soon. That just means that I have to find more of his books - and don't ask to borrow mine. I keep coming back to them, and enjoying them all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing story of a world changed forever.......2006-07-29

This is a fantasic story of survival, love and a nation changed by war. Steinman takes the reader inside the war, and, even more; inside a culture. With an intimate look at the Vietnamese people, the author touches on emotions and aspects of life in the war-torn country that have been overlooked by so many other works written about this hard time in world history. This is not so much a story about the war, as it is about the people and how the war and the coverage of that war changed everything; for Vietnam and the world. I highly recommend this book.

    Book Description

"When I close my eyes, all I see is clear, bright water." So remarks one of the people whose memories, told in their own words, make up this record of a vanishing way of life in small-town, lakeside Japan. Memories of Wind and Waves gathers the richly detailed stories of thirty-three elderly men and women who spent their lives working on or around Japan's second-largest lake, Kasumigaura. Though just forty miles from Tokyo, the area was throughout much of the twentieth century very rural and poor -- a world away from the capital that we know today. Many people tell of working late into each night in a struggle to survive, supplementing their main livelihood from fishing with a bit of farming or other work. Yet these are people who lived so close to nature -- in some cases literally on the lake -- that a great many of their reminiscences are not about hardship but about just how beautiful the place was.

Through this rare, rich oral history we come to know a world very different from our own, inhabited by people like the woman who was married off at nineteen to a riverboat captain and was "steaming mad" to find there was no toilet on board the ship where they were to live, and that she was expected to stick her rear end over the side to relieve herself, or Catfish Kyubei, who, when he dived underwater to catch catfish with his bare hands, stripped completely naked first, to make his body as cold as the fishes' so they wouldn't sense his presence.

Since the lives of many of the storytellers actually span the twentieth century, these people have been witness to remarkable changes, with much of the work they once did by hand and in extremely difficult conditions having now been industrialized, mechanized, or made obsolete. They take great pleasure in remembering a time when the lake and the lives of the people around it were more closely intertwined.

Their stories present a little-known, very human face of modern Japan and, perhaps more importantly, deal directly and in a plainspoken way with the issues that concern us all -- family, work, love, and memory.

This book is a collection if interviews with old Japanese men and women, remembering their life experiences in one particular area of pre-war Japan. The author is obviously very close to these people, as they speak freely and intimately about family, work, and hardship. This is a glimpse of every-day Japan in a past era that we rarely see. The strength of the average hard-working Japanese men and women is what shines through.

        Book Description

Some people suffer from chronic, debilitating disorders for which no conventional treatment brings relief. Can marijuana ease their symptoms? Would it be breaking the law to turn to marijuana as a medication?

There are few sources of objective, scientifically sound advice for people in this situation. Most books about marijuana and medicine attempt to promote the views of advocates or opponents. To fill the gap between these extremes, authors Alison Mack and Janet Joy have extracted critical findings from a recent Institute of Medicine study on this important issue, interpreting them for a general audience.

Marijuana As Medicine? provides patients-as well as the people who care for them--with a foundation for making decisions about their own health care. This empowering volume examines several key points, including: whether marijuana can relieve a variety of symptoms, including pain, muscle spasticity, nausea, and appetite loss; the dangers of smoking marijuana, as well as the effects of its active chemical components on the immune system and on psychological health; and the potential use of marijuana-based medications on symptoms of AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, and several other specific disorders, in comparison with existing treatments.

Marijuana As Medicine? introduces readers to the active compounds in marijuana. These include the principal ingredient in Marinol, a legal medication. The authors also discuss the prospects for developing other drugs derived from marijuana's active ingredients.

In addition to providing an up-to-date review of the science behind the medical marijuana debate, Mack and Joy also answer common questions about the legal status of marijuana, explaining the conflict between state and federal law regarding its medical use.

Intended primarily as an aid to patients and caregivers, this book objectively presents critical information so that it can be used to make responsible health care decisions. Marijuana As Medicine? will also be a valuable resource for policymakers, health care providers, patient counselors, medical faculty and students--in short, anyone who wants to learn more about this important issue.

          Book Description

Descended from the Viking raiders who settled in Northern France under the leadership of Rollo in around 911, the Normans were amongst the most feared warriors of their time. Their territorial ambitions culminated in Duke William 1's conquest of England in 1066, but although victory at Hastings left the English crown in William's hands, Norman sovereignty remained far from established on the island. In order to consolidate his position, the new king built a series of fortifications across the country - this book covers all these developments from the early days of William I through to the fortifications of Henry II, Richard I and John.

              Book Description

This reader provides a comprehensive study of 20th-century Southeast Asia from the beginning of the century to the present. It concentrates particularly on the formation and development of 20th-century nationalist movements in the region, examining their early organization during the zenith of European imperial control and their evolution during the formative period of anti-colonial activity. It traces the intense period of revolutionary upheaval after the Second World War, the anti-colonial wars and the prolonged period of bargaining over the creation of independent states. The region became a frontline in the global Cold War. At the time of the steadily escalating Vietnam war, many of the internal and regional conflicts in Southeast Asia were resolved, and political structures and economic agendas were established that have remained largely intact to the present day.
