Required Reading.......2005-04-30

Since Notre Dame has the only classical architecture school curriculum in the country, it is obvious why this is required reading for entering students. This is an impassioned defense of the humanist tradition, written just before the Modernist deluge. Anyone interested in the theory behind classical architecture should buy this book. It clearly demolishes fallacies of art criticism committed even today.

Where are my missing pages???!!!!.......2005-04-19

I'm reading this book for History or Arch class and have a paper due in two days. I get to page 146 and the next page is 163??? What gives??? How am I supposed to get this read and right a paper on it now??????

I read this book over thirty years ago when I was an architecture student at the University of Oregon and had a dificult time undestanding the text. I tried to read it again about ten years after graduation and couldn't develop any excitement or enthusiasm for the book. It is very difficult to understand and is written in somewhat tedious style.

Not great, but pretty good studio dance photography.......2004-09-13

"Stillpoint" is a decent collection of dance photographs by Ronald Compton which highlights members of the Hartford Ballet. Mr. Compton, a former executive of insurance giant Aetna (headquartered in Hartford), portrays his love of ballet and photography through an approach that incorporates a variety of depictions to bring out the beauty and vitality of the dancers.

What I liked most about this book is that Mr. Compton employed a variety of techniques and formats to present the beauty of ballet and the dancers' bodies. Out of 70+ images, a little under half are in color. The framing ranges from facial close-ups to head-to-toe shots of partnering scenes. Some photos are posed, while others snatch the dancer out of mid-air in a style reminiscent of Lois Greenfield ("Breaking Bounds"). While some of the dancers are nude, others are in full costume (as from a full-length ballet). Even the image quality was varied, from quite sharp to excessively grainy. All the photos are taken in a studio (i.e., none from performances).

On the downside, this book is lacking certain ingredients which make a dance photography book truly impressive. The attitude of the dancers, posed or otherwise, is sometimes missing a dimension that, for example, Greenfield and Greg Barrett ("Tutu") are able to achieve by freezing their subjects at the peak moment of raw energy and/or graceful movement. Howard Schatz, the best at photographing the human body (absolutely superb), is adept at making a dancer jump off the page through his masterful use of lighting, resolution and positioning to show the body as a thing of sheer beauty. Unfortunately, too many of the photos in "Stillpoint" are a trifle flat, meaning that there is a lack of contrast, or that the dancers too easily blend into a busy backdrop. The result is that a number of images are short of presence or devoid of anything that will make the viewer look long at them.

The book is almost coffee table size, and is printed on high-quality paper. There's an interesting interview with Mr. Compton and the publisher's (Aperture) rep in the beginning. Overall, this book is worth checking out by anyone who wants to become familiar with Mr. Compton's work, or who simply likes ballet photography.

practical and funny.......2002-10-02

This how-to is blessed with two cardinal virtues: it's very, very practical, and very, very funny. For Rhonda Orin, fighting a health insurer over a coverage denial or a short payment seems to be like fox-hunting for an English nobleman: a joy to be studied with relish and pursued at every opportunity. Recalcitrance or feigned incompetence on the part of an insurer only stimulates her to fight harder -- and this book spells out, with a connoisseur's surehandedness, every step in the process of "making them pay." The book is also an excellent guide to choosing an insurance plan, if you're lucky enough to have a choice, and to reading the policy with an eye to hidden costs and hidden exclusions.

As for the humor, Ms. Orin writes about insurers as if they're incorrigible children -- children she knows very, very well.

Don't be fooled by the title.......2001-12-31

I bought this book thinking it would help with my insurance company pay my claims they denied (no names, but their initials are Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Georgia). It wasn't helpful in that way. This book seems to focus on people who actually have a choice on picking what insurance they want. It doesn't help the 99.9% of employees who don't have any choice on what insurance plan they're offered.
The book clearly explains all the ins and outs of insurance companies, but is little help in "making them pay."

Rhonda Orin's book on health insurance is very informative as it offers clear, concise advice on how to deal with health insurers. From a reference librarian's perspective possibly the most useful part is the mandatory benefits list of all 50 states. There is also humor in the cartoons and text, always a good way to break the ice when dealing with such an ornery topic. Highly recommended.

Fabulous book!.......2001-05-10

As an attorney myself who had the rare privilege of working under the expert guidance of Ms. Orin, it is no surprise to me that this book is funny, informative, easy to read, and a terrific reference manual for how to decipher those long, horrendous insurance policies and all the fine print that unfortunately comes with them. This book is and will be a very useful guide for anyone who reads it. I strongly recommend it.

Understanding Omaha.......2007-04-05

I read the book several years ago, just prior to visiting the Normandy Beaches. Bought it to have my own copy and read it again. The book's great strength (drawback for some readers, maybe) is its huge volume of detail. It is thoroughly researched; written with clarity; tells the story fully. The human side of this Day In History is also illustrated in meaningful detail; descriptions of unbelievable heroism are numerous; only three Medals of Honor were awarded;many DSCs. Issue: General Cota should have received the Medal of Honor; saved many lives; inspired leadership. A really fine and exciting book.

A Great Book.......2007-04-03

I am not going to go on at length since there are already some well written reviews here. I just wanted to add my vote that this is a great book. I think it is the finest book on Omaha written, including Ryan's and Ambrose's. I also recommend Bernage's work for the graphics and photos.

A Great Description of Omaha Beach That Takes You There.......2007-03-27

This is a great "you are there" description of D-Day on Omaha Beach in Normandy. Joseph Balkoski has done an excellent job of presenting the official and personnel accounts of people who were there that longest day of the war. The descriptions by the veterans take you into the landing craft, onto the beach, and up and over the bluffs that overlooked the beach. His telling of the story dispels the usual belief that the soldiers were stuck on the beach all day and only got off the beach near the end of the day as depicted in the movie "The Longest Day".

I would recommend this book to anyone wanting a real detailed story focused on this one beach of the D-Day invasion. I would really recommend it to someone who is a wargamer such as myself since reading the stories makes me want to recreate these small firefights as well as the overall battle. I am sure there are many people who feel that way.

Balkoski's style of telling history is very well done and he has done an excellent job of bringing the materials together so that others can follow in the footsteps of the brave men of that day.

Joseph Balkoski's book on Omaha Beach is a great historical resource like his book Utah Beach. Omaha Beach tells the story of when largely untested American troops assaulted the German army's Atlantic wall. This is a great read covering the events of the day almost minute by minute. It reads like a great documentary. This is not written in the format of a memoir. Balkoski relies mainly on primary sources such as after action reports, unit journals, and citations to create his blow by blow narrative. He includes the invasion's diplomatic and strategic context. Omaha Beach is the closest the modern reader can get to experiencing the Normandy landings firsthand.

Sprinkled throughout the battle account are the accounts of those in the battle. It is a classic. It is a must for any D-day library. It also included comprehensive lists of all Medal of Honor and Distinguished Service Cross winners at Omaha Beach. It has: the Order of Battle, unit casualty list for the first twenty-four hours, unit organization of a 30man assault boat unit weapons, and equipment carried in the assault by a typical soldier, and a series of detailed maps allowing the reader unparalleled insight into the minute-by-minute combat on Omaha Beach.

Best ever Omaha Beach book!.......2006-12-03

I decided at first to write a long review of this book, but upon reading the other reviews here I trimmed my review to simply this...

I own and run a battlefield touring company in Normandy and have read many many books on the fighting on Omaha Beach on D-Day. There is no better book than this one, that's it it's absolutely the definitive book on the subject. The author has lived overlooking the beach, he's from Maryland - home of the 29th division and he has studied the units involved for thirty years. This book will never be bettered. I cannot sing its praises loudly enough.

I purchased this book for one reason..the visuals. The book has fantastic photographs, super maps and illustrations. If you own a dozen books on Omaha Beach, you'll want this volume for the visuals alone.

Outstanding! I want to point out at the start that I have read most of the sections of this book, not all of it. What I read was good, but the reason you really want this book is the graphics. The maps and photos are the best I have seen, and I own quite a few books on this campaign. I recently used it as a reference with "Omaha Beach: D-Day, June 6, 1944" by Joseph Balkoski. The combination of the two was a great way to find out about that fateful day.

A vivid visual look at a famous battle.......2004-09-10

Not long ago, I read and reviewed Joseph Balkoski's "Omaha Beach" and somewhat lamented the absence of really adequate maps to better show what had happened, linking the small unit actions with the bigger picture. I must say tha Georges Bernage's book is the perfect companion to Balkoski's, supplying highly vivid maps and photographs to amplify the words of Balkoski's narrative. And it certainly is not necessary to read Balkoski's book to find Bernage's much more visually-oriented work valuable in itself. A detailed picture of German tactical arrangements is presented along with equally detailed portrayals of individual American attacks bypassing and overcoming those defenses. And Bernage's text should not be ignored, as it contains some excellent first-hand account material.

I want to say that this is definately a keeper if you are interested in the hisory of D day. My father was on Omaha Beach and I feel it tells his story. Also tells of German side too. I seen some new photo's I have not seen in any other book I have. I am esp. fond of the book because it has the 467th AAA bunker memorial in it, before and after scenes, and that was my fathers battalion.
