      Product Description

This scholarly work by W. Stevenson Smith was first published in 1958 by Penguin Books Ltd. This, the second edition was revised by William Kelly Simpson and printed in 1981 (ISBN: 0300053282) by Yale University Press. The civilization of ancient Egypt extends from the fourth millennium BC to the conquest of Alexander. The Egyptians in their tombs recreated life for the dead in a naturalistic way, often against the background of the landscape in which they lived. They have also left us revealing portraits ranging from the civil servants of the kings to the kings and queens themselves who built the pyramids at Giza and Saqqara; the tombs at Thebes, including the treasure-filled burial-place of Tut-ankh-amon; the temples of Luxor and Karnak; the palaces of Akhenaten at Tell el Amarama amd of Amenhotep III at Thebes. The monuments with their decoration as well as many other works of art are reproduced in this book with over 400 illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and delightful.......2007-09-08

I have to admit that, despite a few flaws, this remains one of my favorite books on making your own glass. Ms. Eberle has written a book that gets my creative juices flowing every time I read it. Her approach to creating functional/decorative glass is (or was at the time) unique, and I especially appreciate her use of mass-produced glassware to create some really beautiful things. It's well-illustrated.

That said, there are some frustrating aspects to this book. She doesn't really explain where to find some of the materials she uses, such as her "paints" and "crystal ice." While I can guess at their identity I can't be quite sure. I've also tried to locate the author (and in fact have sent several e-mails to what I *think* is the correct address) with no luck. She does describe the mechanics of full-fuse firing, but you'll need a pretty good understanding of firing schedules to fill in the blanks.

Even with the frustrations, though, this book is well worth the purchase price. I would love to see more from this author!

5 out of 5 stars Great fusing book.......2007-04-27

I have been fusing for 3 years now. I started with this book and still look back and get good ideas. You evolve and still can get something on a different level. Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Good fusing book!.......2007-01-04

Great pictures. Lots of projects. Good adition to any fusing book collection.

4 out of 5 stars Encouraging start up.......2002-04-18

With no experience in glass work, this book is very encouraging for the beginner. Exercises are simple and clear to understand.
But I find the content of the projects very kitch, especially the finished works in the painting on glass section. I would have preferred if the creative quality be of far greater substance.
I am comming from an art/design profession, so the designs are not inspiring to me at all. Its approach may be too sunday hobbiest for practicing artists/designers.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty but shallow.......2002-01-18

I bought this book based on reviews from this page. I agree that the projects are beautiful and the artist very talented. The book is not really a "how to" in my opinion as it gives very sketchy technical information on all three glass techniques. I would not feel comfortable investing in an expensive kiln and supplies or attempting these projects without reading a far more thorough treatment of the subject first. It is very inspirational to look at: pretty but shallow.

Victorian landscape photographer Carleton Watkins (1829-1916) described his lifelong project in simple terms: to find "the best spot with the best view." However, this self-trained but precocious man, who seemed to delight in giving away much of the work he produced, is now considered one of the most gifted American photographers of the 19th century. Perhaps best known for his pictures of the then newly discovered scenic wonder Yosemite, Watkins made thousands of remarkable, sophisticated, and historically important images that provide an unparalleled visual record of the western United States. In his spectacular depictions of the West Coast's natural resources and the industrial outposts nested within them by way of the California Gold Rush and the Central and Southern Pacific Railroads, Watkins captured the sense of adventure and expansionist enthusiasm of the mid-1800s American imagination.

In the photo Sugar Loaf Islands, Farallons, the combination of grand scale and lush detail draws the viewer into an arresting image in which a single jagged rock emerges from a smoky mist. Only upon closer inspection does one discover that the shiny pebbles at its base are actually about a hundred glistening seals who loll along the beach of a mammoth island. Throughout his 50-year career, Watkins traveled tirelessly under adverse conditions to remote sites, often by mule. He carried cumbersome equipment, including his giant camera, which was custom-made by a cabinetmaker. And he secured his hard-earned images on fragile glass-plate negatives. Watkins's adventuring laid the groundwork for his pioneering in the nascent art and technique of photography. His work commanded wonder and respect from large audiences on both coasts, and the sheer beauty of his pictures helped set a national policy of scenic conservation that preceded the present system of national parks.

Carleton Watkins: The Art of Perception is a companion volume to the first large-scale exhibition to look at this photographer's work from a critical, art-historical perspective. The show originates at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and travels to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., through the year 2000. Produced using state-of-the-art tritone printing, this catalog includes 125 of Watkins's best images--stereo cards and multipart panoramic works among them. Accompanying the photographs are compelling and informative essays by Douglas Nickel, associate curator of photography at SFMOMA, and Maria Morris Hambourg, curator in charge of the Department of Photographs at the Met, as well as Peter E. Palmquist's notes on the plates, a list of selected references, and a chronology. --A.C. Smith

        Book Description

Carleton E. Watkins (1829-1916) is best remembered for his large-format photographs of the American West, especially those taken in Yosemite. This new volume, the latest in the popular In Focus series, is devoted to some of his smaller and unusually shaped works, including stereographs,
albumen prints, and cabinet and boudoir cards--most of which have never before been published.

The J. Paul Getty Museum's collection of Watkins's photographs consists of 1464 pictures, making him the best-represented nineteenth-century photographer in the collection. Presented here are more than fifty of these photographs, along with commentary on each image by Peter Palmquist. The book also
offers a chronological overview of the artist's life and an edited transcript of a colloquium on his career.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking visuals in this Collection.......2004-06-16

Carleton Watkins's fifty-some year career has left him recognition as one the greatest American photographers of the nineteenth century. The photographs shown in The Art of Perception clearly show why. Without saying Watkins was ahead of his time because of the sophisticating and arresting images he produced with a camera, it can be said that few, if any, of his contemporaries could rival his work. In the Art of Perception, the reader will have the privelage to be psychologically compelled by the world from the visual standpoint of this obscure individual. In this book, Watkins's innovation as a photographer shows the developing western world while at the same time creating an unparalleled visual experience for the viewers through more than one-hundred of his best photos, including some never-before seen or reproduced. Essays by Douglas R. Nickel also explain some of the subjects and objects that Watkins researched and photographed.

Travelling through the western United States, Watkins captured some of the most breathtaking pictures of Yosemite, San Francisco, the Sierra Nevada, and more. In my personal opinion, it is almost impossible to dislike any of the pictures collected in The Art of Perception. I must admit, however, that I have a personal taste for landscapes and documentary style photos of young America's development, especially ones as lush in detail as Watkins's are. More than anything, I loved the photographs that Watkins shot showing nature alone, untouched by any progression of America's buildup. As the viewer, it is impossible to prepare for the overwhelming rush from the elevated sensation of visual contingency created by Watkins's vision. Watkins's work not only captured my attention for these simple facts, but also educated me in the importance of the man as a very important historical figure in recording the growth of young American and as an innovator for the way we view photography today.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Well Researched Needed Resource.......1999-11-30

Carleton Watkins is an overlooked figure in the history of American photography--Artistically we could not have wanted for more in someone recording the "wilds" of the West. Beautiful photographs of San Francisco and the Northwest's industrial beginnings, and timeless representation of Yosemite's natural wonder.

So order that triple shot latte, retire to the nearest empty table, and immerse yourself in a comic world gone totally awry. Once you have looked at Clarke's cartoons, you'll see lattes, mochas, muffins, bagels, and scones in an entirely different light.

Words alone cannot describe this laugh a minute experience. The book is a collection of cartoons and caricatures centered on the theme of lattes and scones. From "bear claws" with "lattes" to "latte IV's" Mike Clarke's droll humor and play on words had me laughing out loud, chuckling, smiling, and guffawing.

From Medieval days to internet cafes Clark does spin offs on famous artists, history, philosophy, fairy tales, and Bible stories. His artwork is imaginative and wild. His characters are outlandish and uproarious. His side splitting quips are corny and clever.

This is fun entertainment for the family, your friends, the kids, and the grandparents. "Thanks-A-Latte" sets the pace for a fun filled evening of entertainment worthy of an encore.

This is cartoon comedy at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Look into the mind of "Little Mac", not always a pretty picture, but interesting as heck!!.......2007-04-17

Stephen W. Sears has edited and annotated this remarkable selection of the wartime papers of Major General George W. McClellan.

As the caption says, this book offers a look into McClellan's mind and the picture that emerges is myriad.
On the one hand this was a man who possessed great charm and charisma and enormous ability as a professional soldier. But his soldierly qualities were those of the desk general, the organizer. He was the perfect man to build an army and to make it ready to fight. He created the Army of the Pototmac, and did so superbly. He should get the credit for that, more than he usually does, for it was an impressive achiement.
On the other hand, McClellan was definitely not the right man to lead the army he made into battle. His record as a general in the field is abysmally bad.

McClellan had it all when he came to washington in september 1861. He was eagerly awaited as the man who would save the Union and lead its armies to triumph over the rebel forces. He had the confidence, the friendship, the trust and goodwill of the Lincoln administration, of Congress, of the army and of the people and he lost it all.

He lost it because of his arrogance and boastfulness, his meanness and vindictiveness, his manias of persecution and paranoia, his fear of failure, his constant and overestimating of his adversary's strength, his overblown self-importance, his penchant for naming generals who were as slow and cautious as himself (Sumner, Heintzelmann, Fitz-John Porter, William Franklin).... It is all there in his own words.
His failure, as this book shows, stems from a lack of moral courage, wariness of his reputation, a paralyzing sense of responsability and a genuine reluctance of exposing his men to the possibility of death and wounds. Again: it is all there in his own words.

He could have ended the war on at least two occasions: he could have hurled his army at Richmond in june 1862, by smashing his mighty army through Johnston's defenses and he could have ended the rebellion by destroying Lee's army at Antietam, if he had used his entire army against the Confederates instead of hesitatingly feeding is piece-meal into the fight, and leaving half of them in reserve.

McClellan came out of the war as he came in to it: with a great reputation, admired and revered by many Americans. His ultimate failure as a general, nor his unsuccessful bid for the Presidency in 1864, did much to change that. He went on to become Governor of New Jersey and in the year of his death, 1885, he was the guest of honour and the main speaker at the anniversary reunion on the battlefield of Antietam.
The old soldiers gathered there, both from the North and from the South, saluted and cheered him. I find this hard to understand. They should have hanged him on the spot. Had I been there, I would have cursed him and pelted him with rotten fruit, at the very least. The former Union soldiers had reason enough to hang him because of his shockingly bad generalship, which resulted in prolonging the war and getting so many of their comrades maimed or killed. McClellan's cautiousness cost the South daerly too: his timid and slow campaigns ruined any chance of ending the rebellion soon, which resulted in the war going on till the South was ruined, gutted and utterly defeated. McClellan's way of war, in the end, necessitated Sherman's way of war.

"McClellan is to me............one of the greates mysteries of the war", U. S. Grant noted in his Personal Memoirs. How could a man of such ability prove such a failure? Read it for yourself. It is all there, in his own words.

5 out of 5 stars A great companion to Sear's biography of McClellan.......2004-04-14

Stephen Sears's biography of George McClellan is probably the best ever written about the Civil War general. This collection of his writings during the Civil War, collected by Sears makes a wonderful companion to that biography.

This collection of papers is facinating on so many levels. We read not only his official letters to the likes of Lincoln and Halleck but also his personal letters to his wife. It's in these personel letter that we see glimpses into the man's mind and sadly his paranoia. His letter home, especially during the pennisula campaign show a man suffering from a real psychological problem, made worse by the increasingly stressful situation he's in. As the campaign goes on you see his paranoia slowly begin to increase to the point that he feels he can trust nobody. He becomes a man who in his mind is surrounded by enemies.

One word of warning. This isn't a light read. The collection is a whopping 600+ pages. Sears is holding nothing back here. If you are new to the Civil War and McClellan I strongly suggest first reading Sears's biography of McClellan. His books on the the Pennisula campaign and Antietam I would also recommend reading. They're great books and will help you understand what was going on around McClellan as he wrote all these correspondence.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Writing of then and now.......1997-07-10

This may be one of the most exceptional pieces of writing of his time as well as of today. You can't find this anywhere I know except here, so snatch it up as quickly as you came

1 out of 5 stars revisionist historian collects GBMcC papers to suit his purp.......1996-09-15

I feel that Mr. Sears book is just another example of what historians can do with selected facts. In brief, to write, in his comments between chapters, such rubish, shows whatkind of a historian he is. The bottom line is that either McClellan was right,(the only General R.E. Lee's daughter said he ever feared, and R.E. Lee when asked who was the greatest Union General, he said McClellan by a longshot,) and he could have ended the Civil War in its first year (with some well deserved help from Lincoln) or else Lincoln the subject of so many myths was right. But then, how many remember that he did the same to the General who won at Gettysburgh, fired him. Yet Gettysburgh is part of our heritage. I am hoping to write a book to set the record straight, not depending on todays' revisionist historiaans but original texts, books articles written by those who survived to tell it as it was.

                    Book Description

This book results from a collaborative effort to reconstruct the 15th-century BC tomb of three foreign wives of Tuthmosis III, discovered and robbed by villagers near Luxor in 1916. A general account was published by Herbert Winlock in 1948 (The Treasure of Three Egyptian Princesses, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art). The present volume differs substantially in the type and extent of documentation provided and in interpretation. Verification is provided of tomb provenance for a number of objects, for example, while other objects previously thought to have come from the tomb are now considered forgeries. The text explores and documents the location of the tomb in the southwest valleys at Thebes; field work conducted by The Metropolitan Museum of Art at the site in 1988; art market finds alleged to have come from the tomb; and the names of the foreign wives and the life they might have led.
