Book Description
As families are rediscovering the joys and virtues of staying and entertaining at home, board games have surged in popularity – indeed, sales doubled in the last year alone. this mirrors a trend in the late nineteenth century – the heyday of American boards and table games – when, fueled by the introduction of games coincided with a growing need for middle-class social entertainment.
Then, like now, the games that best captured players’ imaginations mimicked, and sometimes poked fun at, the culture that produced them Organized around themes such as courtship, commerce, travel, sports, and city life, The Games We Played brings together over one hundred eye-catching examples of America’s rare and popular board games, such as The Game of Playing Department Store, which encourage players to accumulate the greatest quantity of goods while spending their money as economically as possible, and Bulls and Bears: The Great Wall St. Game, in which players try their hand as speculators, bankers, and brokers, yelling each other down as if in a trading pit.
This playful visual survey of its thematic essays will cause board and table game aficionados to share in the revelry of togetherness.

Overview of Nineteenth Century American History through board games........2005-08-22
Board games as we understand them in the 21st century, really began in the early nineteenth. Before then, children were really considered to be junior adults: time not spent in school was for work on the farm, or in a factory. Of course there was chess, checkers (draughts) or games like Go, and Senet. But these were primarily played by adults. With growing prosperity, and corresponding disposable income and spare time, came a realization of the value of play for children. This play could be used for socialization: instill values, increase literacy, and develop dexterity, without the kids knowing it. Since board games had this mission, as well as entertainment they make a unique window into the social history of the Victorian Era.
"The Games We Played" does an excellent job of showing the changes wrought in American society reflected in board games. The rise of urbanization, development of a transportation infrastructure, and the nascent consumerism all are described via the illustrations. This is not an in depth social history, but association of major nineteenth century events, and how they affected games is pointed out. The illustrations alone are almost worth the price of the book, as they are practically works of art (in an era before lithographs, game art was hand painted by factory workers). The only weak areas of the book are the two chapters about travel; neither is more than a few pages, and the narrative is not of the level of the others in this work. Overall, if one has any interest in games, or social history this is worth considering.
A perfect gift pick for the Christmas season.......2003-12-12
Board game have long been a family passtime, and this history of the board game will intrigue any who enjoy games. Bright full-page color photos of vintage board and table games accompany descriptions of their themes and history. Games are organized around themes - chapters survey a surprising one hundred of popular American games, drawn from over five hundred given to the New York Historical Society by Arthur and Ellen Liman, flea market devotees who amassed a large collection. Highly recommended for collectors and game enthusiasts alike: The Games We Played is a perfect gift pick for the Christmas season!
BOARD GAMES ARE THE STUFF OF LIFE.......2003-05-31
Board games seem to have a monopoly on our entertaining
pastimes: Their sales have doubled in the last year alone! And if
your idea of a great game is Chutes & Ladders or Risk, they go to
jail and do not pass go. Margaret K. Hofer's nifty volume brings
together more than 100 eye-popping examples of rare and popular
board games, organized by theme, such as sports, courtship and
travel. The late 19th century and early 20th century games here are drawn from more than 500 such gems from The New York
Historical Society's tremendous collection. What's most fascinating (besides the glorious color photos) is being reminded
that as much as times change, some things (like games) don't. Take "The Elite Conversation Cards," manufactured in 1887. Think of it as a vintage "20 Questions" or a host of other games that can be found at Toys R Us .... courting couples "break the ice" with cards that ask such deep, thought-provoking questions
such as "Are you inclined to boss the house?" and "Have you ever
been in love?" Pass the dice, please.

The splashy photo spreads in The National Enquirer: Thirty Years of Unforgettable Images prove that the Enquirer has become what Life magazine was in its day: the image bank of American pop culture. They're all here, big as life--or, in the cases of Elvis, Ted Bundy, John Lennon, Grace Kelly, and River Phoenix, big news in their coffin close-ups. The photos are haunting: Columbine High killer Eric Harris at age 6 in a skeleton-with-bloody-skull-mask Halloween costume; Eric Clapton and his son just hours before the boy's window plunge. The book has lots of laughs, too: Bryant Gumbel and Matt Lauer getting a lap dance from three transsexual waitresses; Van Damme with his third and fourth wives on either arm (in identical dresses). Witty layouts predominate: weirdly well preserved Michelle Phillips and a mummy pose opposite a little girl and Michael Jackson (whose nose is disintegrating). The glimmer of glamour vies with the shock of decay--often in images of the same celeb. Watch Liza morph from tot to sot! A feast for inquiring minds. --Tim Appelo

Unless you were raised on the Enquirer like me or are very old, you will not recognise the majority of the people in the photographs.
Also, the book does not have a lot of material and the majority of their most shocking, funny, and just plain weird photos are not included. The few photos in the book are poorly organized.
If you really like tabloid culture, you would be better off by subscribing to the magazine. At least you can make your own scrapbook.
A picture is worth a thousand words..........2004-03-17
I'm not a particular fan of the National Enquirer, but I really enjoyed this book. It looks great, and shows some really impressive celebrity photos.
Transcends into the realm of art. Seriously!.......2002-01-26
The Enquirer is infamous for its shameless portrayals of American celebrities (and the odd royalty living elsewhere). This amazing collection of photography though is something even more rewarding than the weekly grind-out of the delightful tabloid. The images are juxtaposed SO skillfully, and with great humor. A dumpy, potato-like Xaviera Hollander and beau just across the page from slender and youthful Tommy Lee and Heather Locklear - a horrible, prophetic Dorian Gray vision of the future! Plenty of foreshadowing photos of relationships doomed to failure, a gallery of mugshots and coffin shots. The famous Elvis casket photo is easily eclipsed by the very gruesome River Phoenix shot. If I had to pick one shot as a favorite, it would be the Christmas cheer of Anna Nicole Smith and her 90-year old sugar daddy, the expression on her face instantly confirming the nation's worst speculations of that relationship. The best cross-page pairing is aging-but-sexy Joan Collins in her bikini across from a braid-wearing Sean Connery in HIS futuriffic bikini from a 70s Sci-fi movie. Can anyone possibly think he's the sexiest man alive after seeing THAT??? The book also maintains that peculiar and annoying quality of the Enquirer that some soccer-mom favorite celebrities are somehow "untouchable" - Oprah and Rosie O'Donnell are visions of personal triumph and noblesse, never to be shown in an unflattering manner. Despite that minor gripe, you can't afford to miss this photo treasury of everything beautiful about the supermarket years of the Enquirer. I'm hoping they do a companion volume of the best of the Enquirer's "shock value" black & white early years.

I love a good freak show, don't you? The publicity starved and plastic surgey obsessed celebrities strut their stuff in all their grotesque glory. Michael Jackson get's top billing here as the world's strangest living curiosity. If you enjoy this side show you should check out Kenneth Anger's Hollywood Babylon and John Waters' Shock Value. Book Description
Shortly before the Loma Prieta earthquake devastated areas of Northern California in 1989, Risa Palm and her associates had surveyed 2,500 homeowners in the area about their perception of risk from earthquakes. After the quake they surveyed the homeowners again and found that their perception of risk had increased but that most respondents were fatalistic and continued to ignore self-protective measures; those who personally experienced damage were more likely to buy insurance. A rare opportunity to analyze behavior change directly before and after a natural disaster, this survey has implications for policy makers, insurance officials, and those concerned with risk management.
Customer Reviews:
not enough insurance.......2007-03-10
Through a fortuitous coincidence of the authors surveying homeowners in Loma Prieta before its 1989 quake, they were able to do follow up surveys afterwards. The book analyses the responses. To ascertain any significant changes. In California, due to the cost of real estate and the risk of quakes, this is an important issue. They found that there was little increase in the taking out of insurance after the event. Even for those in the region of the epicentre.
Ironically, it may be that the strong building codes helped diminish both the material damage and death toll, but which also reduced incentive for more insurance. The book also investigates other factors, like the distance from the epicentre, in affecting homeowners' decisions about insurance.
Book Description
"It is not too much or too early to call Robin D. G. Kelley a leading black historian of the age. But it may not be enough." -Paul Buhle, Monthly Review In this vibrant, thought-provoking book, Kelley, "the preeminent historian of black popular culture writing today" (Cornel West) shows how the multicolored urban working class is the solution to the ills of American cities. He undermines widespread misunderstandings of black culture and shows how they have contributed to the failure of social policy to save our cities. "A salvo in response to the latest conservative efforts to mine the familiar battery of statistics in search of proof that African-Americans belong at the bottom of society. Kelley, a historian, turns his considerable skill toward public policy and perceptions." -William Jelani Cobb, Emerge "Kelley's crafted a funny, fast-paced tour of recent and long-standing debates about the quality, form, and function of black life, an interdisciplinary performance that has him kicking up dust across all kinds of boundaries. . . . Kelley doesn't skimp on historical detail or intellectual rigor; best of all, he can play the dozens with the best of them." -The Village Voice Literary Supplement "Kelley writes about culture, politics, Negrocons, disgruntled former leftists, and contemporary activists with intelligence, passion, insight, and great humor. This important, fluid book makes it clear that Kelley's genius is his ability to bring complex ideas down to earth and simultaneously make them transcendent." -Jill Nelson, author of Straight, No Chaser: How I Became a Grown-Up Black Woman
Customer Reviews:
Must read... very powerful.......2006-06-06
Yo' Mama's Disfunktional! by Robin DG Kelley is an extremely thought-provoking compilation of essays. Kelley offers his readers a social critique on Urban America. Using all he has, Kelley gathers everything from historical information to personal experience to make this book as powerful as it can be.
Kelley speaks of the chocolate cities that Blacks claimed and saw as being so great, until the whiles claimed the vanilla suburbs and the conditions of the chocolate cities declined. Who should help solve the problem? Our society has commonly placed the blame on the Black families; a common trend of leaving the problem to the oppressed. Additionally, Blacks who make it economically are seen as crossing over. As opposed to ostracizing those successful families, alliances should be made. Kelley attacks not only racism, but sexism, homophobia, classism and all avenues of discrimination. He particularly focuses on the economic impact in urban America. As the economy in these areas declined, the culture was heavily impacted. The economic situation brought about a division between the African Americans and a change in self-expression whether it was hip-hop or graffiti.
He goes on to discuss how Black America is regressing and going "b(l)ackwards". The number of Black males in jail continues to outnumber the number of Black males enrolled in college. The usage of drugs has proven to be taxing on the Black communities. What happened to the progress made during the Civil Rights Movement beginning in the early fifties? Kelley goes where most sociologist have not gone. He discuss the "normal Black" families that sociologists of the 70's seemed to have missed.
An interesting yet tedious read, Yo' Mama's Disfunktional! is definitely a must read. Jammed pack with heaps of useful information, Kelley has picked apart the urban culture of America and nicely hands us his findings in this book. He makes it clear that this is a collective struggle which everyone must have a hand in. Read it!
Yo Mama.......2006-06-05
Robin Kelley's Yo mama's disfunktional! is an interesting and informative social critique. Right away, she points out a few critical points - how going into the 1970's, Blacks were making progress in the amount of African-Americans who held positions of authority in office. Then, as more and more gained power, they began leaving their Black communities and moved into white areas - or in other words, away from the "chocolate cities" and into the "vanilla suburbs". This point is often the topic of heated debates because many people believe that once the strong, influential African-Americans leave their Black communities, the communities start to decline due to the lack of role models and mentors. This leads to the belief that as soon as Black people gain some sort of power, they forget where they come from and flee to the money comfortable, but not minority-welcoming, rich suburbs of America.
Another point she also brings up is how much poverty contributes to Black identity. Black identity is almost synonymous with poverty, especially the way it's expressed in the media. This leads to conflict within African-Americans living in the United States. Many Black people who happen to be wealthy are made to feel "less black" or called "oreos" because they don't know what it's like to be black - or in other words, poor.
She goes on to discuss how Black America is "going backwards". According to statistics, so many Blacks are in jail, have criminal records, and are unfortunately hooked on drugs, especially cocaine. Instead of making progress - which was the goal of the civil rights movement, and the direction Black America was going in the 1970's - African-Americans are going backwards. Communities are deteriorating, and conditions are worsening.
Anyone who reads Kelley's book will definitely be opened up to the contemporary struggles of Black American, and realize that there is so much more work to be done.
Review by Ruth Williams.......2006-06-02
Yo Mama's Dysfunktional! by Robin Kelley takes a very firm stand on the reasons behind the urban culture of African Americans. He leaves no stone unturned, offering not only explanations but also potential solutions and predictions for the possibilities of what black urban culture is and can be. Although this book was published in 1997, Kelly's application of his Marxist views to explain the state of the black urban culture and mentality is thought-provoking and very applicable to today's culture, as many of his suppositions are occurring as he claimed they would.
Initially, Kelley's explanations of urban culture and the rise of hip hop, rap, graffiti and sports among urban youth may be hard to swallow. However, have an open mind and continue reading because as you do, you will come to realize that not only do his theories make sense but they are supported by concrete incidents and facts. According to Kelley, the main reason that black urban culture broke away to become such a distinct and different culture, filled with things that shock outsiders, is due to the decline in the economic status in the black urban status. Blacks needed something to hold on to because their economic means - which was very little to begin with - was rapidly slipping away. He explores and reveals how a separate and unique black urban culture was inevitable due to the economic course of black history in America.
Kelley also goes on to defend the need for affirmative action and to criticize the blacks who have "made it" but do nothing to help out in urban communities. It is crucial for the middle working class to try and understand the causes behind the happenings of the urban communities and the goal of the book is to bring that understanding. With the understanding, it becomes easier for the middle class to band together and to help restore the urban class to a satisfactory economic state, thus starting the process of changing the way urban culture is.
Kelley's lessons are not limited to black communities, but rather, can be and are applied to other minority urban communities. The main factor here is not skin colour but economic standing. By the end of the book, even if Kelley has not convinced you of his theory, you will be motivated to want to make a change, especially since he highlights how such changes are very possible and even cites a few encouraging examples.
The Problem with America.......2005-07-17
There is a lot of research that attempts to describe or explain black urban culture. Few researchers have gone directly to the source to get their information, but Robin Kelley, a professor of History and Africana Studies at New York University, has done just that. He talks about black music, from blues to hip-hop, and its importance, whether simply aesthetic or economic. He covers graffiti artists and sports stars. Kelley explains how urban youth, who are facing severe unemployment as jobs move to the suburbs and out of the country, turn these activities into paydays for themselves. Using the public transportation issues of Los Angeles, he demonstrates how the poor people of color in this country can band together and bring about change.
This book covers history, as well as the issues facing black people in America today. In an easy to understand format, Kelley explains the politics of surviving the ghetto and succeeding in life. He is critical of those new liberals who want to turn the battle into an undefined class issue, rather than identifying the various factions that make up that class, such as race, gender and gender identity. He describes neo-conservative blacks as 'negrocons.' It is a book well worth reading, and even though it was written before the turn of the century, it is still right on the mark. What he predicted is coming true.

Yo' Mama.......2000-02-08
This book is the bomb! Fast-paced, funny, biting, Kelley offers a sharp critique of the way popular images of Black urban America has shaped social policy. But that's not all. He shows how existing grassroots movements are already laying the ground for a new, emancipatory future.

A good book..........2003-07-20
...I'm not sorry I read it.
Throughout, there are hints of "conspiracy theories" but I think that is unavoidable in a topic as sensitive as this one. Did the US knowingly abandon troops in Vietnam and Laos? Do we know they are still there but unwilling to do what's necessary to get them home? These questions are answered, I think, satisfactorily. It's well-documented and the photographs are very applicable.
While not necessarily what I consider a 5-star book, it was recommended to me by an avid history and military history reader whose opinion I regard highly. If these topics are your "cup of tea", I'd recommend this even more.
The end of the MIA mystery?.......2003-05-26
For two decades following the Vietnam war, ill-fated attempts by the United States to obtain conclusive evidence concerning the fate of hundreds of POW/MIA's from the Vietnam war finally found success. In a bold and daring espionage mission, former U.N. refugee officer Theodore G. Schweitzer was the acting agent for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) in what later became known as Operation Swamp Ranger.
Beginning in March of 1992 and lasting several months, Schweitzer was granted access to Vietnamese war archives that held a voluminous amount of information on U.S. servicemen that were missing in action and others that were held as prisoners of war. Vietnam, up until this point, had strenuously denied for years that they had any useful data on missing servicemen and they blatantly withheld documents that would solve many discrepancy cases on unknown losses of U.S. personnel. Using previously unreleased photographs, meticulously annotated files, and physical evidence, Operation Swamp Ranger completely exposed Vietnam's attempts to bury the POW/MIA issue over the years. Although only suspected by the U.S. government, Vietnam's General Political Directorate (GPD) finally admitted that many U.S. servicemen were killed in cold blood.
Operation Swamp Ranger also proved to be useful in the aspect that it helped dispel the widespread theory that Americans had been abandoned by the U.S. government after repatriation of POW's in 1973. Furthermore, scams and other fraudulent activities aimed at the grieving families of MIA's were exposed and contradicted by evidence gained from Hanoi's archives. Lastly, there appears to be no conclusive facts to date which could verify that there are actual live POW's still held in Vietnam today.
Although limited cooperation with the Vietnamese government regarding POW/MIA's faltered after revelations from Operation Swamp Ranger became known to the public at large, the U.S. government still claimed a large victory in what amounts to a monumental breakthrough in the enduring POW/MIA controversy. Unfortunately, this long and arduous journey does not have a happy ending. Not yet, anyway. Even as the Defense POW/MIA Office (DPMO) continues to negotiate, haggle, bargain, cajole, and mediate with Vietnam regarding additional unreleased material they still hold, there are no clear indications of just how much further progress will be accomplished in the future. As stated in the author's narrative, communist archives are notoriously known for disinformation and forgeries and nothing in Vietnam is ever straightforward or simple.
Inside Hanoi's Secret Archives is a remarkable investigation into previously hidden wartime data. Generously footnoted and offering revealing photographs, this is a fascinating and memorable reading experience. Anyone having the slightest or even most demanding questions concerning the ongoing legacy of missing U.S. servicemen in Vietnam, I would enthusiastically recommend this book to you and to everyone in general.
