Well Written Book.......2007-06-24
I have been a landlord in the past and am doing it again. This book would have saved me a lot of aggravation if I would have read it years ago. I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is full of wisdom no perspective landlord should be without.
Great title - bad book.......2003-10-29
I was hoping for a good source of pragmatic info from someone with landlording experience. Instead I got a small book with a lot filler (same multi-page lease included twice!) and information that seems more like it was plucked from other books than from genuine experience. The "anecdotes" are actually quicky made up stories that do little more than reiterate some point the author already made. All of the info that is here is treated very superficially and without reference to outside sources for more useful explanations.
I wanted a book that filled in holes not in other books. Something that gave me some practical solutions to problems that might be glossed or left out in other books. Information that came from someone who actually ran buildings and wanted to pass on the info. This is just not that book.
Check out ISBN 1580627668 for a much more useful, more real guide.
An adequate quick reference quide with appropriate examples........1998-12-30
Robert Irwin's book is well written with plenty of examples of what to do and what not to do in just about any situation that arises between a tenant and a landlord. The book is well organized, easily referenced, and has wonderful "landlord rules" which are good tips for the active landlord.

Mangaka Kia Asamiya, the creative mind behind Silent Mobius and Nadesico, seems to have hit his mark again in the latest volume of his Dark Angel series, continuing the adventures of angelic warrior Dark (yes, that's really his name) and his cute fairy companion Kyo.
Sidetracked from his quest by the abduction of Kyo and the theft of his sword, Dark must get both back. But he can't do it without getting past a group of mechanical thieves known as the Gairana. And Dark can't complete that task without the help of a rag-tag team of fighters with old scores to settle. As the battle ensues, Dark's hidden power awakens and it will change the warrior for better or for worse.
For the manga newbie, the left-to-right format of this version of the manga is a breath of fresh air. For the manga buff, this book has enough riveting plotlines and manga archetypes to keep you happy; enigmatic heroes, ridiculously powerful foes, cataclysmic battles, and sexy heroines who can't seem to keep their clothes on. While it's fairly easy to pick up and read, the manga suffers from one major drawback-there are sound effects on nearly every single panel of every page, which not only prove annoying but distracting. And those with an untrained eye may miss a few details in all of the action. As an added treat, the manga also features a seven-page cover gallery where Asamiya's stunning artwork shines.
All in all, Asamiya fans know what they're getting here, and they won't be disappointed. Those who are into manga in general should give Dark Angel a try (Starting with Vol. 1, of course).

I laughed alot! Anyone who has ever lived in a small town will relate to this book. If not you will wish you lived in a small town just for the comedy of it! Linda is a good writer. If you have red any of her other books you already know this! I highly recommend this book!
Life Among the Boredom and the Chowder..........2006-12-17
I bought and read this book because my Grandfather, Asbury Arthur [Bob] Gray, was borned in Stonington, Maine; just behind the Opera house on Highland Avenue. His Aunt Millie's stove is still on displayed in the General Store and when I walked through the town for the very first time back in 2001, there were people who looked strangely like my Grandfather all over the place. He was a dear old man, with terrific story telling capabilities, many about the sea since he, like Linda Greenlaw, come from a long line of fishermen. There were tales of exploration, and of terror (like the Great Storm of 1873 where his Grandfather, James H Gray, and the crew of the DH Webb survived by hiding out in the Bay of Chaluer, off the coast of the Prince Edward Islands), and of family (although he lost his mother when he was only 10 and was forced to move to Bath and work in the Iron Works because his Dad and his two brothers were at sea). This book is every bit as good as a conversation with Grandpa Gray, the humor and the charm shines right on through. So does the boredom and the chowder... Thank you Linda for letting us share your little island and your great big hospitality! I enjoyed it immensely.
The Lobster Chronicles.......2006-10-06
This book chronicles the life of Linda Greenlaw, the author, during a lobster fishing season. Living on a small island off the coast of Maine, the author allows us into her downeast life. We learn some great information on the lobster fishing industry, as well as the lifestyles of the residents of Isle Au Haut.
Some funny anecdotes and a glimpse into life off the coast of Maine make up this short, quick read, book. Being a resident of Maine, myself, I always like to read authors from here. I have yet to be disappointed.
Okay but not exciting..........2006-07-05
I read this after I read F/V Black Sheep because it was also about lobster fishing in New England. It was entertaining and had some very funny moments but it wasn't especially exciting. I liked her stories about the strange characters who live on that island but when it was over I thought she seemed like a lonely person
Barely a book.......2006-06-30
I don't get it. There is no story, just a meandering. While I was hoping to be drawn in to a vivid life of ocean hardship and island comforts, it is just kind of drab.
The pages are easy to turn, and she writes nicely. I realized half way through the book that it was going nowhere. I finished it anyway, hoping for some insight or revelation. There was none, except of course for the map that appears at the end, too lately revealed for it to serve it's function.

A JOB WELL DONE.......2005-02-24
Of the many, many books addressing the subject of the war in Vietnam, this is certainly one of the better ones. Mr. Spector is not only a good historian, but, just as importantly, a good writer and story teller. I doubt that a person could read this work with out becoming, at the very least, just a bit emotional.
The author, I think, has been very even handed with his assessment of the situation we found ourselves in at that time. He does not appear to have an axe to grind, one way or the other. Having served myself, I found the terminology used and the attitudes written about, to be pretty correct. You certainly will want to add this one to your collection and I recommend it's reading very much.
Absolutely Outstanding.......2004-01-11
Spector's book is not just a history of what happened after the Tet Offensive of 1968, but a history of the entire war in microcosm. Plenty of other folks here have sufficiently addressed the merits of Spector's book so if I may, I'd like to address something a little different. I have little tolerance for military historians who don't include details about weapons and equipment. It may seem an inconsequential thing to many, but understanding how the belligerents were clothed, equipped, and armed is very important. So important in fact that John Keegan addressed that very issue in his book "The Face of Battle." So, kudos to Spector for explaining to the layman the details of an RPG and a LAW, an M-16 and a Kalashnikov, jungle boots and tire-soled sandals. Anyone who wants to more fully understand the Vietnam War should definitely read "After Tet."
Tet was Hell...................2002-06-29
Yes Tet of 1968 was hell for those of us that were over there at the time. And then came May and August of 68, which were also two of the bloodiest months of the war. I was with the 1/27 25th Infantry Division at Cu Chi, which was a major area of tunnels for which the VC and NVA stored weapons and supplies. As a "tunnel rat" I experienced some herrendous experiences there. Ron Spector has made some very good conclusions regarding the war and points out some of the many problems that we 19 year olds had to incur. Great book for those of us that were there as well as the rest of you who just want to gain some understanding as to why we lost the war, and some 56,000 young men as well.
Very Good Overview.......2002-06-26
This book covers the year time period after the Tet offensive during the Vietnam War. Given the title of the book I was prepared for a page after page description of savage combat. What I found was that the book was not just a description of one firefight after another, but a comprehensive account of the Vietnam War effort during this one-year period of time. The author does a great job of describing the experience of American soldiers in the Vietnam War during the year after Tet.
The author provides the reader with a brief, but complete and readable historical background for the war up to 1968. He also gives us very clear and vivid descriptions of the battles and everyday life of the foot solders. We also get a good run down of the South Vietnamese corruption that worked against the American effort to save their country. This was the part that really surprised me the most, it seamed like the South Vietnamese wanted and needed the war to continue to keep the profitable drug trafficking, smuggling and protection rackets going. What made me furious were the details of the United States supplied food, gasoline, and equipment that the South Vietnamese were selling to the North Vietnamese.
The author also spends some time talking about the drug use by the soldiers and the difficult race relations. This section of the book was not as surprising given that was the same environment in the states at that time. Overall, this book is a well-written and informative, but not a rundown of overly descriptive bloody fights. He does a wonderful job in describing the environment, how hot it was the difficulties in moving through the country, the differences in the front line and the support areas. This is a good book and a great way to introduce yourself to the Vietnam War.
Mini Tet in May and August, 1968........2002-06-24
An excellent book on the Vietnamese War of 1968. Spector not only tells us why we (Americans) failed at the war but also what the weaknesses were on the other side (Viet Cong and NVA). The book summarizes some of the problems associated with the war such as race relations, lack of a professional soldiers and officers, and weapons. Spector describes that 1968 was the critical year of the war. America and the Saigon regime won the military battles but lost the political war. He equates the war at that point to the stalemate of the Western Front during the First World War.
