This is a very clearly demostrated how-to book. It offers great ideas and the directions to accomplish the projects. I find it invaluable. I have several how-to books and this is the best by far.

Good on Window Treatments.......2002-12-25
There are tips on window treatments I didn't find in any other books, that alone was worth the money for me. However a lot of the color choices are a little dated, and the instructions are sparser than in other books. Still there is a lot of inspiration here.
lacking information.......2000-05-03
most of the book is helpful and well illustrated.however, i needed information about calculating drapery pleats and the book says to use pleater tape. no help there. Also, i needed information about sewing a swag and jabot and this Singer sewing book tells me a no-sew method on throwing a swag over a curtain rod. no help there. the rest of the book seems to be well thought out. they surely missed badly on the 2 items I needed information about.

The only how-to book you'll ever need.......2001-05-31
Mort Gerberg, longtime New Yorker cartoonist, has created the reference book to beat all reference books. Notice I said "reference book" and not "instruction book"--those wishing to learn how to draw cartoons will be disappointed here.
Originally published under the title "The Arbor House Book of Cartooning", Gerberg's book aims for aspiring professionals, those who are serious about pursuing cartooning. He is brutally honest about the pitfalls of the business, yet avoids the "sour grapes" approach of other cartooning-book authors such as Ken Muse (in other words, the "this business is tough and the editors are idiots, so it's hardly worth bothering" attitude).
Unlike authors of similar books, Gerberg lets the reader know that there are more markets for cartoonists than just comic books and comic strips. He not only covers the aforementioned subjects but delves into greeting card production, spot illustration, and magazine gags.
Gerberg is one of the few to write at length about gag writing for comic strips and magazine panels, and makes good use of his vast experience in both fields to examine the anatomy of the gag. The section on comic-strip creation is filled with common-sense knowledge that took me some twenty years to discover on my own. Gerberg even goes so far as to discuss the making of a winning comic character without descending into vague generalities. He compares today's comic characters (such as Garfield, Dilbert, and Beetle Bailey) to radio and TV comedians of the past. The best such characters, he says, were those with clearly defined comic personas (such as Jack Benny). Older readers can probably remember Benny's reaction when told by a robber, "Your money or your life!" The line was not funny in and of itself, says Gerberg, but if you understood Benny's comic persona, it was hilarious. (You Gen-X and Gen-Y folks might want to rent a few tapes to understand references like the above.)
At the rear are addresses of greeting-card companies, comic-book publishers, and comic-strip syndicates, but be warned--even the latest version is full of out-of-date information. Those wishing to find addresses are better off consulting Artist's Market.
If you're an aspiring cartoonist, keep this book within arm's reach. Gerberg even had the foresight in the paperback edition to underline those passages he felt noteworthy, so the reader can examine important points at a glance. My own copy, sadly lost now, was well worn after several years' use. My suspicion is, yours will be too.

Gerberg pulls no punches in writing about the difficulities of breaking into cartooning. But he also writes about the pleasure and satisfaction of this deceptively simple art form. From cartoonists' tools to how to generate ideas, from comic books to greeting cards and editorial cartooning, this one book probably answered all my questions about the profession. Lots of cartoons from a smorgasbord of cartoonists are a treat to study -- and chuckle over. Thanks, Mort.

allsport.......2002-05-07
Slightly unfair review by the previous reviewer, when they say the book doesn't have all the great photos of the last 50 years. It is made fairly clear by the tag line of the book that it IS a collection of photos from the Allsport and Hulton-Getty. Anyway, for me, it was enlightening to see a lot of extraordinary photos that I had never seen before. I've already seen the really famous ones !!
A beautiful book, but..........2001-02-28
This mammoth book does a wonderful job of displaying some brilliant sports images, and does a fairly good job tracking the evolution of sporting photography from static view-camera shots to today's cinemaesque, remote-camera action images. But as an actual history of sports photography, it's a bit lacking. The editors apparently felt content to limit their selection of photos to those in the Allsport and Hulton-Getty agency archives, and so a large chunk of the notable sporting images and history from the last century are just plain not there.
Where's Neil Leifer's picture of Muhammad Ali standing triumphantly over Sonny Liston after knocking him out in 1965? Where are any of a dozen other seminal pictures? The answer: not here, because they weren't taken by an Allsport or a Hulton-Getty photographer. This is a book that, according to the index, contains not a SINGLE mention of or image from Sports Illustrated, probably the single largest and most defining force in sports photography in the last 50 years.
Don't get me wrong, this is an impressive book that displays some fantastic and great-but-obscure images well. Just don't buy it thinking you're getting a complete survey and overview of sports photography from its beginnings to the present.
Yet another great book from ALLSPORT.......2000-12-13
Sports photography is both a fascinating medium and one which has stood the test of time. Despite the onset of the digital camera and computer generated images, the craft remains fresh, yet few give thought to the creativity and skill of our best sports photographers. Sportscape shows in detail the creativity, efforts and techniques that world - class photographers use to take the stunning pictures we see in newspapers, magazines and other printed media. Many great pictures feature in the book taken by photographers such as Clive Brunskill and Adam Pretty. I recommend it for anyone with a keen interest in the art.

I haven't read this book, but I read Holmes Alexander in The Arizona Republic for several years during the early seventies. Pompous and embarrassing, he seemed to have zero capacity for understanding the complexities and nuances of any society, including his own.

The point of reading this political book is to enjoy Holmes Alexander's wonderful command of the English language. It's tinged with sadness, of course-- Alexander was retiring from a lifetime of writing (both as a columnist and an author of scholarly works). The introduction by Sen. Barry M. Goldwater helps set the reflective tone.
This was to be Alexander's last charge against the forces he had confronted as a pundit--the sneering liberals, the crackpot globalists, the unthinking geniuses out to appease the Communist bloc. It is also his final written tribute to his American homeland, a place he loved deeply. The quality of his writing demands that, when a culture history of the Right's experience during the Cold War comes to be written, some space will have to be alloted to the career of Holmes Alexander.
Final note--The title is from an encounter Alexader had as a boy with a veteran of the Confederate Army. The grizzled old soldier told Alexander, in reference to the American South's fate after the Civil War: "Never lose a war." Perhaps military hawks will yet latch on to this eloquent motto.

Let's go north!.......2000-08-25
Rowley's fresh and colloquial style of narrative makes you feel at home in the arctic. While you read you can feel the cold wind in your face, you hear the dogs breathing and the ice cracking and you smell the fresh winter air. You start longing for the moment when you can meet all those friendly Inuit. And when you finally get to the arctic you will see that not much has changed.

This was a text book for my daughter . It arrived in the best shape of any of her text books I ordered on line. That is all I can rate.

I found this series of books very interesting for the real time reports. There are also just a massive amount of photographs. Looking back on the reporting now you can see the misleading stories that could be contributed to the fog of war or government spinning of the truth. I think if you are a real die hard World War 2 buff you will get a lot out of these books, if not go to the library.

The cap makers, tinsmiths, diamond workers, and shoemakers who lived on the Lower East Sides, the East Ends, the Pletzls of the major Western cities in the early years of this century have all but faded from memory in the history of modern Jewish social mobility. Now the voices of these Jewish workers can be heard in a unique collection that compares their experiences in Berlin, Paris, London, New York, Amsterdam, and Buenos Aires.
Editor Nancy L. Green and an international group of scholars have assembled a rich selection of source materials--newspaper articles, letters, memoirs, posters, and literature--to reveal the many-faceted experience of Jewish workers who emigrated from Eastern Europe to the West in the early decades of the century. Through the voices of the workers themselves, their observers, and their critics, we come to understand the lives of men and women in a variety of circumstances--at home, in the sweatshop, in school, and on the picket line. To what extent were these Jewish workers alike? How did local conditions shape their experiences? What role did Jewish workers play in internationalizing labor movements?
