Roman Art.......2002-03-16

This book is an excellent example of how art critique can be used to analyze politics and history. Paul Zanker does an exceptionally thorough job as he systematically works his way through the end of the Republic to the heights of Augustan Rome. The book includes tons of photographs, coins, maps and reproductions to illustrate appropriate points in the text. The thesis of the book is to show how art was used to convey the importance and dignity of the new Imperial system. Despite the breadth of material presented here, the text is smooth and understandable.

There really isn't enough space in a review to adequately cover this book. Zanker's main thrust is to show how Augustus rebuilt and remodeled Rome with himself at the center. The styles that Augustus used were quickly picked up and duplicated by the Roman upper classes, as well as those in the provinces. My favorite section of the book concerns the coinage. Augustus minted coins closely linking himself to Julius Caesar in order to establish himself as the heir apparent (which he was) to Caesar. Coins were also used to commemorate Augustus's triumph at Actium over Antony, and also to promote Augustus's conservative legislation concerning marriage and childbirth. Although Augustus slowly consolidated power under the title of princeps, he took great pains to show Rome that he was bringing about peace, prosperity and honor, all things that had been missing during the civil wars. Is Augustan art propaganda? It could certainly be interpreted that way, even though there was no "Ministry of Information" in Rome.

An excellent book, although there are a few problems. One of them is the tendency of art critique to see things that others may not. Zanker's descriptions of statues of Augustus are a good example. While I can agree with his depictions of the later Augustan busts as showing a calm, sort of omniscient demeanor, I have a tough time agreeing with his assessment of an earlier bust of Augustus as nervous and power hungry. This is a small problem with an otherwise great book that will make you think about Rome in a different way.

A novel treat: scholarship that's fun to read!.......2001-10-22

Zanker offers a fascinating reconstruction of Octavian Augustus' agenda for consolidating his position as leader of the Roman world. He does this by careful analysis of the buildings, statues, coins and other physical objects made during the rule of Rome's first emperor. Zanker understands well the impact of visual communication and uses it insightfully. He doesn't simply catalog artifacts, he interprets them and connects them within a broad system of consciously articulated ideology. In two decades of academic reading, this is one of the two most memorable books I read.

Engaging and accessible.......1998-12-24

A wonderful tour of the early Roman empire framed within a rigorous theoretical discussion. Zanker skillfully illustrates how an empire was built by the manipulation of public thought through the use of images, or in other words, propaganda. Shapiro contributes with a lively and nearly transparent translation.

Excellent book.......2007-03-05

Whether you're interested in 2D or 3D, Preston Blair is an excellent source for animation principles. It's a shame it's Out of Print and only available through scalpers who apparently care neither about good animation nor passing on Mr Blair's wisdom accessibly - it's all about the bottom line for them. At over $5.00 a page (I wouldn't mind paying Mr Blair this much directly, but not some scalper), check your library instead. Or write to the publisher and ask them to put it back in print. Great book though! Bad scalpers, shame!

Excellent.......2005-09-01

Considering the tragedy that is only beginning to unfold along the Gulf Coast, it's perhaps a little ironic that my copy of this "book" arrived on my doorstep just a day after Hurricane Katrina's passage through Louisiana and the South. The images inside bear an uncomfortable resemblance the images we're seeing now: mounds of destruction, survivors with haunted looks in their eyes, building foundations wiped clean of their structures.

I use the word "book" in quotes because this is really more like a softcover magazine, and a gigantic one at that. Most photos run across two full pages, and when it's spread open you're looking at 2-foot by 4-foot images of the tsunami's devastation. It's a size that's bulky, hard to manage; it forces you to confront what you're seeing and makes you look, and the vision of the exceptional photographers presented here keeps you looking.

VII photographers are known for being excellent at what they do, and this publication is another collection of their fine work. It's hard to see history repeating itself again so soon, and this time closer to home, but perhaps the lessons learned from the events these photographers witnessed will help ease the discomfort being felt by so many once again.

GROUNDBREAKING BOOK !.......2005-07-16

This is an extraordinary undertaking. The size of this book might seem too big but once you have it spread open on you dining table you will appreciate it and understand it as the size allows the photographs to deliver the power of the destruction of a tsunami wave. Never seen such good photography so big ! Is like having you own private exhibition. The photography is very impressive; I especially appreciated the photographs by Antonin Kratochvil. The written part of the book is as remarkable as next to a very interesting and accurate description of Tsunamis the introduction by Simon Winchester is very interesting. Also this is a non-profit project and I was very glad to help with my small purchase.... so easy to forget that 250,000 people did in this tragedy. Buy this book, support Doctors of the World, and help the many people suffering in this world! A great keeper.

One doesn't know whether to admire Vicki and Dennis Covington for writing Cleaving or to shudder and hide one's head in the sand. Written in alternating voices, this tag-team memoir draws a thorough portrait of one marriage, complete with decades' worth of adultery, drugs, alcoholism, abortion, and sin. In the Covingtons' case, these bohemian carryings-on come mixed with a goodly portion of old-time religion. After going sober, the couple settled down to raising daughters, attending church, doing good works, and writing books (they claim 7 between them, including Dennis's thoughtful Salvation on Sand Mountain, a finalist for the National Book Award). They even spearheaded a church mission to drill wells in Central America, a project which here yields not only life-giving water but also a rich flood of marital metaphor.

Yet their problems didn't go away. Charged with writing an inspirational book about marriage, the Covingtons found their own union once again in serious disarray. Rather than making themselves look good, they chose to tell the absolute truth about what had passed between them, and in the process they created this unusual memoir, an unflinching look at the forces that bind a couple together as well as those that rend them apart. After all, as Vicki points out, the word cleave--taken from the Biblical injunction for a man to leave his mother and father--can mean either to cling to or to divide, "as by a cutting blow." In their case, it meant both: "Love plays us like an accordion. Together, apart, together, apart..." People talk about honesty as if that were a literary virtue in itself. It's not, of course, but this excruciatingly honest memoir has many virtues of its own, including some lovely, unfussy writing and a steadfast refusal to look away when that would be the easiest thing to do. Honest, but very disturbing.......2001-03-10

I've read all of Vicki Covington's novels and think she is a great writer. My book club really enjoyed BIRD OF PARADISE. And Dennis's book about snake-handling churches was fascinating so I read this story of a marriage hoping to find kindred people. I admire honesty but I was very disturbed by this couple and their obessions. I'm not a prude and I've always been a Christian( even though some youthful love affairs) but I don't understand raising two daughters and continuing in the way the Covingtons have. I also don't understand having an abortion because you can't tell who the father of the fetus is. Again I believe that abortion is very necessary but not for the reason Vicki gave. "What kind of marriage do you have?" was the question the wife of Vicki's lover asked and it's a valid question. We all have our definitions of marriage and we all lead lives that call for forgiveness but we're also called to repentance. I didn't see much of that in CLEAVING. Sometimes the honesty is too much.

Totally fascinating reading........2000-09-08

Dennis and Vicki Covington are accomplished novelists, but in Cleaving they leave fiction behind to present a candid, revealing account of their marriage which has endured and survived alcoholism, mutual adultery, and antagonistic abortion. They spare neither themselves nor the reader from their lapses of faith, failures, betrayals, and addictions to alcohol and drugs. Cleaving is a mesmerizing biography, a lot like driving past a literary car wreck. Totally fascinating reading, and a testament to what the human spirit can cause, endure, and occasionally triumph over.

Honesty in writing vs. Honesty in relationship.......2000-04-19

Since "Salvation on Sand Mountain," "Bird of Paradise," and "The Last Hotel for Women," are among my favorite recent books, I was surprised by how much I disliked "Cleaving." Another Covington fan warned me against reading the book, but I was curious, in the same way one cannot help but pick up those grocery store tabloids when one is waiting in a long line.

While the Covingtons repeatedly evidence dishonesty in their relationship, they insist that they must be honest in writing about their relationship. Why is honesty in writing valued so highly by the Covingtons when it was so easily dismissed in their relationship? And there is something self-congratulatory in their tone that made their revelations more characteristic of exaggerated fish stories than of honest personal reflection.

I can understand, perhaps, the value to the Covingtons of writing these experiences together and reviewing them together; I cannot see the value of publishing them. If you must read this book, for goodness sakes, check it out from the library. (Sorry, amazon.com.) This book isn't worth the money or aggravation.

pure courage.......2000-04-06

how many of us have the courage to write about our mistakes and tribulations in the tornado maelstrom that is our divorce culture. there will be many who will get out the judgement stones to throw, but to me, literature is above society and has its own arena. is it compelling? yes. i could not put it down. is it honest? refreshingly so. is it amoral? oh well, who cares. history is stacked with the bodies of moral and amoral alike, and we all live and die and in the end have our own maker to face. i have no fear that these two individuals will ascend the naysayers and be able to say , "I told my truth", those who can't handle it are free to leave. I was deeply impressed by the adroit writing skills of both authors; doubtless it is their shared interests and gifts that cleave them together. I cannot empohasize enough their daring and their adept wordsmithing. i applaud their efforts to speak reality as it exists in so many homes, homes in which people are cowering and whitewashing and not able to come out of the marital closet. the truth shall set you free: marriage is hard work, and it seems to me that these two people have taken it on with heart and a special kind of honesty that eludes the bible belt class. I wish there were more books out there which truly portayed marriage as the out and out war/power struggle/grace that it is. i loved this book; not just for its skillful writing, but for its forthrightness and daring. please dont stop writing, covingtons. you covingtons are way ahead of your time. much love and support and prayers to you from another woman who has felt the slings and arrows of family and love and will continue to tell her own truth, by your fine and sometimes frightening example. I honor your efforts and wish you peace and love and a thick skin for the small minded who would judge. you are two people I admire, more so because your own daughter has voiced her support in this sometimes cruel and petty arena. you must have done something right to earn such loyalty...and count me among the loyal. bless you tenfold.

Covingtons Betray Readers, as Well as Each Other.......2000-01-22

These Covingtons are skillful writers, but the tale they tell of betrayal and compromise, self-indulgence and thrill-seeking is a self-serving one masquerading and soul-cleansing confession. No matter how carefully you spread their behavior across a grid of pop songs, psychobabble, scripture and contemporary sociology, it still amounts to a single conclusion: these people are good at constructing fictions. This so-called breast-baring is just another one of them, casting seriuous doubt on their ability to write non-fiction with any genuineness of purpose.

I've referred to this book on many occasions over the years. Now working on my second degree, several classmates and a professor have used it as the basis for discussions on family stress. It covers a variety of topics and the resulting ramifications. The topics apply in all life situations and allow you to see families in a whole new light. An easy, yet very informative read. Working toward my first degree, it was the only text I read cover to cover.
