Book Description
For the Germans and Austrians, memorializing the Holocaust has required public recognition of their crimes; for the Jews, it has required public expression of their suffering. As James Young brilliantly demonstrates, each monument is charged with the often highly problematic struggle between collective memory and national self-image, self-interest, and the aspiration toward a future. Through the memorials and monuments, Young illuminates the process whereby the meaning of the Holocaust continues to be redefined in each new generation in Europe, Israel, and America. This richly illustrated book is a groundbreaking study of the fusion of Holocaust memory and public art in contemporary life.

Memory as monuments.......2004-03-29
After having read this book for my historical anthropology class, I was completely taken by its broad-based approach to analyzing monuments and the histories they possess. To fully appreciate this book, the difference between 'history' and 'the past' must be understood. 'The past' is everything that has already happened. As soon as a second passes, the past has been constructed simulatenously the world over. History, on the other hand, is how people, cultures, governments, etc. choose to present sections of the past. History is a section of the past that is magnified and often made to represent the entire past despite its fragmented recounting. Young does an excellent job of showing how four different countries recall the same events (the holocaust, the Warsaw ghetto uprising, among others) with different and unique results, demonstrating how 'history' differs from 'the past'; each history is a different retelling of a country's perception of 'the past'. He analyzes these methods of remembrance through monuments and the outcome is an excellent analysis of how memory is constructed and interpreted and how personal experience shapes and influences one's perspective on the past, thus influencing their perception of history. The book is well written with many pictures and historical tidbits to place monuments in their proper context (although, after reading the book, you come to realize that monuments have no true proper context). I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the holocaust, theory of history, art history, or cultural studies. Excellent book.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for character amination.......2003-06-08
It is a 5 stars book, but is a little outdated now.
Good character animation book, but a bad MAX book..........1998-12-22
This book teach you how to make a good character modeling and animation + basic tutor of Character Studio. So, if you looking for character modeling and animation in MAX, better buy other books like Inside series of 3DS MAX R2.5
Great learning tool........1998-12-04
If you don't like this book it's because you dont know what your doing. It comes chock full of models and taught me how to really use Bones Pro.
Almost as bad as the Plug-ins Book by the same company.......1998-10-29
This book spends 3/4 of the time talking about anatomy instead about how to use Character Studio. It is so out of date that almost all the tutorials on the CD Rom do not work right and some things are missing. The last thing you need is more headaches when its your first time learning a new program. Also there is no teck support or updates except a www to the publisher. Don't waste your money!
too old.......1998-08-24
This book came before MaxR2. why don't you buy other Max R2 or R2.5 books? it's waste of money!

Interesting Subject; Poor Presentation.......1999-12-07
You'd be hard-pressed to tell a boring story about about a plucky country newspaper editor who had principles and stuck to 'em. But this author has done it. He says the book is an adaptation of his doctoral thesis. That fits. The book reads like a well-done, fully footnoted college paper, not like a dramatic novel. It strives to identify key historical facts at the expense of the reader's interest. With a modest amount of effort, it could have been reworked as a compelling autobiographical novel bolstered by its remarkable display of features of midwestern life during the first half of the 20th Century.
Americana at its best........1999-07-06
My first reaction upon completing this books was: What a great TV series this would make! It would be in the vein of "Medicine Woman," perhaps, although of more recent vintage. It would, however, chronicle the daily life of a small American town at a fascinating period of American history. As seen through the eyes of a newspaper editor who thought everything was, indeed, fit to print, the series could be a story of America's development. Its location is purely midwestern but allows us to travel to the metropolises of Kansas City, St. Louis, New York, San Francisco--to meet fascinating people from all walks of life and to take pride in what this nation has accomplished. Good reding? You bet!
A revelation of life in small town America in early 1900s.......1998-04-26
Though a scholarly biography, the book reveals much more about life in a small mid-west America town at the turn of the century than many other biographies or novels. Well worth reading for an insight into "news" that didn't make most newspapers but which was true in revealing life, the book is nicely crafted and the author writes with a knowing touch. One would wish for more intimate details of the subject's life, but he was a private man, kept no diary, and did not tell his innermost thoughts to his family. The book, however, succeeds, because it reveals the town, Lamar, MO (which happened to be President Truman's birthplace, and where Wyatt Earp had been Marshall and where the Earp kinfolk lived on) and some of the foibles and fancies of American life. I hope the author writes another book soon.

Book Description
Before Wilma was five years old, polio had paralyzed her left leg. Everyone said she would never walk again. But Wilma refused to believe it. Not only would she walk again, she vowed, she'd run. And she did run--all the way to the Olympics, where she became the first American woman to earn three gold medals in a single olympiad.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for Elementary Kids.......2007-10-19
My granddaughter needed books on Wilma Rudolph for a 5th grade school project. This ended up being her favorite. The text was just right for her understanding and she really liked the illustrations. As she was reading it she clutched it to her chest and exclaimed to me, "Grandma, I love this book!" It prompted a conversation about overcoming doubts, believing in yourself and what things inspire us... a conversation I don't think we would have had otherwise.
A homeschoolers review.......2006-03-17
This is a true and exciting story that will make you never want to give up on your dreams. I really liked this book and recommend that you read it.
Classroom Book.......2005-02-09
I have used Wilman Unlimited in my classroom for the past few years. It is a fantastic book to use any time during the year, but good for Black History Month also. I use it with fourth graders to teach sequencing and analyzing character. I highly recommend this book.
Running just as fast as she can.......2004-07-07
Inspirational stories fill hundreds of picture books every year. Most are simply awful. They either tell tales that are loose plots barely supported by facts or they paste together a slapdash concoction of truth and fiction with as little thought as possible. The truly beautiful bio-picture books out there are as rare as hummingbirds in autumn. So it was with great joy that I located "Wilma Unlimited" and found it to be not only inspirational but also a darned good read. Written by Kathleen Krull (the woman who could make long dead musicians fascinating in "Lives of the Musicians" and bring Cesar Chavez to life in the recent "Harvesting Hope") and illustrated by David Diaz the book is the best possible way to introduce kids to one of the world's greatest athletes.
Born in 1940 to a family of twenty-one people (nineteen siblings, no less), Wilma Rudolph was initially a sickly child. Though she was energetic enough, she often caught every disease imaginable. At the age of five, Wilma's left leg twisted inward and it was clear that she'd come down with polio. Still, Wilma was a determined child and she consistently exercised her unruly leg to get stronger. After continual practice, she was finally able to walk free of the leg brace that had weighed her down. At twelve the brace was put away for good and Wilma started participating in sports. She led her high school basketball team to the finals, catching the eye of a college coach. Before you knew it, Wilma was recruited into the Tennessee State University's track-and-field team on a full ride scholarship. In 1960 she competed in the Olympic Games in Rome. The book sets this part up beautifully. Wilma arrived with a twisted ankle into a place filled with television cameras (the first time they ever filmed the Olympics), the place "shimmering heat", and her competition consisting of runners who had run faster races than she ever had. Then Wilma proceeds to win one... two... three gold medals! The last medal is especially dramatic, hinging on the moment when Wilma drops her baton and STILL beats the other runners in the 400-meter relay. The last double page spread in this book shows Wilma standing, "tall and still, like a queen", earning the last of her three medals. It's a truly proud moment for all who have the privilege to experience it once again in picture book form.
Krull has a way with words. I'm not saying that Wilma Rudolph's life is dull. Far from it. But in the hands of a lesser author this story could easily have been bogged down in all the wrong moments. This author knows which moments should be given full glory. The moment when Wilma removes her brace and walks proudly into church will banish from your mind that similar pseudo-inspirational moment in "Forrest Gump". Wilma's struggle at the Olympics through pain and skepticism puts the reader through the same strains. You yearn for this woman to beat them and beat 'em she does. Then, best of all, come the illustrations of David Diaz. This is my first Diaz experience, though I suspect that I'll read many more of his books as the days go on. Diaz has accompanied his illustrations in this tale with sepia toned photographs. The book's endpapers display the outlines of footprints in the dirt. The title page is an evocative view of ivy climbing a raw wooden fence. Behind his colorful illustrations, each background photograph refers to the corresponding scene obliquely. When Wilma and her mother take the bus to the hospital, the photograph is a close-up of a wheel. When she packs away her leg brace, it's shredded packing paper. A great relief it is indeed that the colored illustrations are worthy of their sepia compatriots. Though these pictures may appear blunt at first, they are filled with the most delicate of designs. I loved watching the character of Wilma as she aged. As she grows in confidence, her posture improves and back stiffens until, by the last shot, she is standing taller than all the women around her. Than all the women in the world.
"Wilma Unlimited" should be known to everyone living in American today. This is inspirational without being either annoying or faux-patriotic. It's an actual honest-to-goodness amazing story. The book is beautiful and its story is worthy of its packaging. I challenge you to read it and not shake your head at least once in amazement. It's just that good.
such a fantastic book!.......2002-09-15
i am a reading specialist in Washington, DC and chose this book b/c i love David Diaz and because, like wilma, my children have many obstacles in their lives. i simply can not finish this book without nearly crying in front of my class. i've read it so many times, but the suspenseful writing and triumphant ending never get tiring. it is a truly wonderful story and wonderfully told and illustrated by this duo.

The Republic's A10 Warthog.....?.......1999-07-19
The A10 Warthog was manufactured by Fairchild Republic. Without the Fairchild Aircraft Company, there would not have been a A10.......so why in the world would you title it the Republic's A10... where in the world do you get your information ?
Excellent review of A-10 story, in pictures.......1998-09-08
This follows the typical pattern of Don's books, with lots of colour photos of squadron aircraft - mainly taken on operational pans. Excellant, if you want a central reference for the colours and markings for the aircraft.
Good.......1997-12-30
This is the best book on the A-10 I've ever seen. It is packed full of info, lots of stuff that you couldn't find elswhere. Its has full listings of squadrons, inluding ANG and AFRE. Its only downside is that over half the pictures are squadron pics, which show an A-10 on the ground, doing nothing. Overall this book is great for any A-10 anthusiest.

Book Description
Women's work is recognised as fundamental to the industrialization of Britain in many fields. How it was rewarded is the subject of these studies, ranging over time, region, and occupation. Topics discussed here include children under the parish apprenticeship system, women's work for poor law authorities and how it was taken into account by welfare systems, the changing nature of women's work, remuneration and technology in British agriculture, questions of customary norms governing pay, female employment in many hitherto neglected urban industries, and women and the East India Company. The issues of gendered wages and customary earnings, family economies, regional and rural-urban contrasts, the impact of technological change, and the links between female work and formal welfare systems, are raised throughout. Contributors STEVE HINDLE, JANE HUMPHRIES, STEVEN KING, PENELOPE LANE, NEIL RAVEN, MICHAEL ROBERTS, PAMELA SHARPE, K.D.M. SNELL, NICOLA VERDON, SAMANTHA WILLIAMS.
