An interesting couple who remained highly creative through the span of their careers. I first discovered their work as a child when I saw their brilliant film "Powers of 10". I intend on picking up more books of their work. Great reference for designers and architects.

A GREAT BOOK TOGETHER WITH "EAMES DESIGN" BY JOHN NEUHART AND MARILYN NEUHART.......2006-01-15

Charles and Ray Eames were not only creative artistic talents, they were also commercial geniuses (just like George Nelson was). These two talents provided the secret for success that would reward them throughout their life. This book gives a good view about the creative talent of Charles and Ray Eames had.
But I would also suggest to purchase the book "Eames Design" by John Neuhart which I also thought was wonderful. If you like modern design I also suggest to visit the wonderful online archive about George Nelson at WWW.GEORGENELSON.ORG and if you like 1960's design also check the museum archive from Verner Panton at WWW.VERNERPANTON.COM

Modern Design @ it's best!!.......2002-04-13

Words don't do justice to the work & imagination of Ray & Charles Eames! This is a beautiful book covering the creative minds of two of the best modern furniture designers. Filled with great pictures, & very complete text of their design & the many other things they created besides furniture.The Eames' are my biased favorite, if you love modern 50's furniture,fabric, & art you must have this book.They worked for the infamous Herman Miller company, who has reissued many of the Eames furniture pieces available again today.As creator of the modern molded fiberglass chair, & molded plywood, the Museaum Of Modern Art has Charles' chairs as Art, which they are & comfortable too!More than comparable to their Danish counterparts,this couple brought us sleek,smooth lined furniture that will take us into the space age for at least another fifty years!(check out A.I.-incredible backgrounds of modern furniture!)

This is a wonderful addition to any coffee table! I learned so much about this creative couple that I never knew before. The pictures are A+ & very well done. If you are a fan of Eames furniture, you cannot live without this book!!

Founders of a Profession.......2000-08-23

The Eamses were innovators in many fields such as Architecture, furniture design, film, etc. But to my mind their gretest acheivement was the definition of a new profession, 'Graphic Design', or as I beleive they called it, a 'Design Office'.

Up till then, there was 'Commercial Art', and 'Art Departments', and whatever styling was applied to an industrial product was done as an afterthought, and usually by an amateur.

After The Eamses, a new recognition that the design of appearances was a craft and a profession, and not just an art, was born.

This book demonstrates in many ways, how Ray and Charles Eames applied this and many other insights to the various fields of endeavor that they entered and changed forever.

A method for the detection of the effects of antibiotics on soil microbial communities was optimised in the present study. We investigated the influence of measurement time and nutrient status on the pollution-induced community tolerance (PICT), using the sulfonamide sulfachloropyridazine (SCP) as model compound. The tolerance development in soil microcosms that were exposed to SCP under different conditions was compared with the background tolerance in SCP-unexposed microcosms. The tolerance of bacterial extracts from the soil microcosms was determined in Biolog^(R) multiwell plates as the SCP sensitivity of a range of physiological processes. The background tolerance was not affected by soil nutrient amendments, but an influence of the inoculum density in the microtiter plates was observed. Still, the variance of the background tolerance was low, which is in favour of the usage of community tolerance measurements for a selective detection of a toxicant impact. In line with the assumptions of the PICT concept, soil amendment with SCP led to an increase in community tolerance. This tolerance development was enhanced upon additional soil amendment with fresh pig slurry, and less by alfalfa meal addition. Tolerance increases were observed after a soil exposure to SCP of only 7 days, possibly because nutrient input facilitates the fast adaptation of the soil microbial community. However, a further increase in exposure time led to variable changes in the observed tolerance. Prolonged tolerance detection in the microtiter plates (11 days) enabled a clearer differentiation between different soil treatments, as it better resolved the EC"5"0 values of processes with a high tolerance to bacteriostatic antimicrobial compounds. For the detection of antibiotic effects on soil microbial communities, it is therefore recommended to use nutrient amendments (possibly fresh pig slurry), to standardize the soil exposure time, and to extend the period of Biolog plate measurement beyond 7 days.

A long-term and large-scale field study was carried out to assess the ecotoxicological effect on the dung beetle fauna of cattle treatment with ivermectin (broad-spectrum endectocide) and fluazuron (acaricide) under normal extensive farming conditions in South Africa. One herd of 25 heifers was treated four times at an 8-week interval (starting late November 2001) with a standard injection of ivermectin (200@mg/kg) and a standard pour-on dosage of fluazuron (3mg/kg) and another herd was left untreated as a control. This set-up was replicated on a second, separate farm and the four herds were kept in four separate paddocks of about 80ha each. Dung beetle communities were monitored over an entire farming season, from early November 2001 until August 2002. This study was carried out in a very moist year with above average rainfall. The impact of the treatment on the dung beetle communities was examined using a variety of community measures as well as a wide range of univariate, graphical and multivariate analyses. There was no observable effect of the administered drugs on the dung beetle communities. Species richness and diversity seemed unaffected in the treated communities and the ecological similarity of the treated and control communities remained high through most of the trial. These results support the notion that the ecotoxicological impact of antiparasitic drugs depends on factors such as climatic conditions, spatial scale of treatment and proportion of animals treated.
