5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Photographic Tour of a National Treasure.......1997-03-20

Photographer Robert Lautman has taken and assembled a remarkable set of photographs depicting scenes which a visitor would see upon touring the wonder that is called Monticello. Near the beginning of this book are two architectural drawings showing the first floor room layouts. Numbers appear on these drawings and they indicate the approximate camera positions for each black and white photographic plate. This is an outstanding photo-tour of Jefferson's custom built mansion. I would have given it a 10 rating had it not been for a few little features and omissions which detracted from the work. The major distraction centered on an obviously retouched photograph showing the surrounding hills as seen from Monticello. The photographer, in an attempt to show what the view might have looked like for Jefferson, had to manipulate the photograph to remove or minimize modern distractions such as houses, roads and other man-made edifices. While the intent to recapture a lost vision is a good one the execution wanting. It would have been nice to see more than one photograph of the second floor rooms.

Book Description

This handbook is primarily designed to raise standards and is intended for students and for those working in archaeological illustration. It is a showpiece of some fine illustrators, working in quite different ways.

Drawings of objects, made from different materials are shown at their original drawn size as well as at their subsequent, reduced, published scale, so that the techniques used by the draftsman can be clearly seen and appreciated. Objects are described, sometimes by specialists and each drawing method has been written by the illustrators themselves, who share their methods here; giving step-by-step guides to how the illustrations were put together.

Very helpful. Actually shows examples of artifacts, how they were drawn, computer programs used (when applicable), what medium they used. The book also makes a point of showing artifacts made of different components ie: glass, wood, metal, bone, etc. Very well written, excellent! Also comes with a list of Arch. Ill. Soc., clubs, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Funny in Every Way.......2001-10-23

Bill Hoest is one of the best funny men around. And Leroy and Loretta (the Lockhorns) are his champions. These two blast one another in every possible way, and their marriage counselors as well, while delivering tons of laughs.

If you want to have a really good time, lift the cares of the world off your shoulders for awhile, and enjoy a tremendous laugh or two along the way, turn to the Lockhorns. It is a book I have read more than once, and I laugh outloud every time.

I highly recommend this book and any book by Bill Hoest about the Lockhorns.

    5 out of 5 stars Funny.......2001-10-23

I love the Lockhorns. Larry and Loretta fight their way through married life like two champions who just will not go down with a punch. Bill Hoest has a really good look at life in all its inexactness and irony. And we can laugh. There is a lot of Larry and Loretta in every relationship and it helps to see the real pros going at one another and still managing to stay together. If Larry and Loretta can stick it out, so can we.

There is real fun here, and that is the main reason to visit with Larry and Loretta. Fun. You will laugh with each turn of the page, and be truely sorry for the end of the book.

I highly recommend the Lockhorns by Bill Hoest.

Everyone's battling couple are at it again. These strips from the 1970's are from creator Bill Hoest, not his wife who currently writes the strip. Not appearing in enough newspapers, this is perfect for anyone who needs their Lockhorn fix.

Leroy drips venom and Loretta is perfect as his long suffering wife. Leroy always criticizes his wife's cooking and once he told her he wanted to use it for exhibit A. In this mood, my favorite strip in the book is where they are eating out and Leroy says to the waitress, right in front of Loretta, "What do you mean home cooking? Why this is delicious!!"

Have a hard day at work? This is the perfect antidote to make you forget your day. Buy it right away.

It is December 26, and the author, a Merchant Navy radio officer, is sailing on the "Scottish Heather" into the infamous 'black pit,' an area where German U-boats can operate freely on the surface without fear of attack from the air. What happens next is just the beginning of a chilling, first-person account of the realities of the war at sea, as experienced by a young man in his late teens. Still trying to come to terms with the his father's death, his childhood experiences at the hands of the nuns, and the need to distance himself from his mother, young Gordon copes with seasickness and the constant threat of torpedoes.

The Black Pit and Beyond is a gracefully written account of a young man's experiences as a Merchant Navy radio officer in World War II. J. Gordon Mumford shares with readers not only the grim realities of war, but also his personal story. While he was still only a boy himself, the author faced life-threatening situations, and at the same time was dealing with the emotional backlash of a traumatic childhood, the death of his father, and a turbulent relationship with his mother. It's these personal details that make his story particularly poignant. It puts a face on and real feeling behind a war that many of my generation have forgotten. The Black Pit and Beyond is a great read for anyone interested in this page in history told through a personal perspective.

Pregnant women typically fall into two categories: those who want to be informed, and those who want to be soothed. The want-to-know-everything set will be enchanted by the fifth edition of obstetrician Clark Gillespie's detailed guide to pregnancy. An erudite and humorous obstetrician? You bet! In this newly revised and updated edition of his classic, Gillespie gives the facts--all of them--in an informative and entertaining manner. Q: "What position is the best for having sexual intercourse while I am pregnant?" A: "Like riding a camel, there is no best position," Gillespie writes. If you are someone who wants an answer for every "why," who feels in control only when you have all the statistics in hand, then this book is for you. As the title indicates, Gillespie discusses the stages of pregnancy and fetal development month by month. Ultrasound photos and a few pages of personal diary questions begin and close each chapter, but much of the information slated for each month pertains to the entire pregnancy. Nutrition, maternity clothes, birth preparation, pain relief, risks from house pets, varicose veins... you name it, Gillespie delivers the details--with a great bedside manner. --Ericka Lutz

      Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars Eh!.......2005-05-13

The book was boring, slow, and full of a alot of WRONG info.
      - The section on episiotomys is not factual. I have the updated version of this book, so there is no reason for it to have such old information. It has been proven that episiotomys are needed in only extreme cases when a baby needs to get out right away. This section in this boosk makes them out to be the norm, and says very little about the importance of natural tears.
Not only does it heal better, faster and more natrually, but your body knows how much to tear in order to get the baby out. Often times a doctor will cut you too much..meaning you have more to heal, or they don't cut long enough..and then you end up tearing ontop of the cut.

-Dr. Gillespie is not very accepting of homebirth's, and he fails to mention that the the 20% of normal pregnancis that have 'births gone bad' are caused by hospital interventions. He also seems to think that the reason home births are popular in other countries is because women can't afford to go to a hospital. Nice try doc. Could it be that other countires are just smarter? Yep!
He also forgets to mention that the home birth popular countries have a much higher 'live brth' rate compared to the united States.
I am not against hospitla births. I have had one myself..as well as a homebirth. It seems to me though that the doc is only putting his personal opinion rather than fact and helpful info.

He only mentions midwives in passing which is very unfair to women who will read only this pregnancy book. He does very little to empower women and makes pregnancy into a big medical mishap, that only doctors can be a part of.

He does not get into delivery except to talk a lot of nonsence. FOr instance. His only mentino of position during delivery is a short blurb about where squatting, and hands and knees adapted from.

Not a book for a smart women who actually wants to learn factual information and how to have a wonderful pregnancy and birth. My fear is that some young girl will pic up this book, believe what it says and then make all the wrong choices (although the author believes any and all choices during pregnancy and birth are the dr.'s and not the mothers). I hope most women are smarter than that though

4 out of 5 stars Useful and Informative.......2005-03-06

Having read a number of pregnancy books, this is one of my two favourites (the other being What to Expect When You're Expecting by Heidi E. Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg, Sandee Eisenberg Hathaway). I did not read the book all in one go, but halfway through one month I would read the chapter as to what to expect the next month, and I did this for both my pregnancies. There was a lot of information about what could go wrong, but pregnancy, though natural, is fraught with dangers and I thought that it was good to include some of those situations. I did not think these parts detracted from the book, and I would recommend it to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars If you walk the straight and narrow, this one's for you!.......2001-07-13

Unless, of course, you are married, straight, "responsible," financially-okay, hospital-birth-advocating and you don't mind being patronised by a doctor who will NEVER be able to give birth himself, I'd suggest that you avoid this book like the plague. I don't really have issues with Dr. C telling readers about every slight problem that could happen, nor with the layout or anything else- but the patronising manner in which he speaks to women who are pregnant.

The book only addresses issues which Dr. C deems "proper," and at the same time alienates women who may not have [male or existant] partners, financial security, or anything else people assume you're meant to have when you fall pregnant. He ignores issues which many women may want information about- such as homebirth and alternatives to pain relief, and advocates the "don't ask any questions, just obey doctor" line of dealing with patients which I've become all too used to.

On a lighter side, the pictures are interesting and detailed, however they may send you into freak-out land if your ultrasound doesn't look like the ones in the book.

If you don't mind doctors assuming you're stupid, or you are, this is all you'll need to read- how to ignore what your body may be telling you, how to give up your autonomy, and place your life, your baby's and your dignity right into the hands of a doctor.

Do yourself a favour- get Sheila Kitzinger, the "What to Expect..." series, or Ariel Gore's "HipMama: A survival guide."

5 out of 5 stars A great book for intelligent pregnant women.......2000-11-14

Any woman who finds this book frightening or condescending to women doesn't want information; she wants to be comforted. This book is extremely thorough and useful for anyone who wants real medical facts and straight talk. I have read a number of fact-based books about pregnancy and found this to be a good no-nonsense guide including some information which can't be found in any of the other common resources.

When a woman embarks upon a pregnancy, it's important to know all of the facts rather than cling to a sugar-coated view of how an "ideal" pregnancy should shape up. Armed with information, a rational, informed woman can intelligently manage her pregnancy and know how to recognize true problems if they arise. If you are such a woman, this book is for you. If not, may I recommend "The Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" -- it's suitably giggly and comfortingly devoid of medical fact.

      5 out of 5 stars Don't pass it up!.......2000-03-13

With so many books regarding childbirth overflowing with extremely liberal ideas and information, I found Dr. Gillespie's conservative approach a nice balance to many other popular childbirth books.

I did not find his discussion of the many ailments possible during pregnancy frightening. Instead, I was happy to find medical issues discussed in his book that I had not found in any other!

I especially enjoyed the journal sections of the book, and I recommend this book to anyone seeking information from an informed doctor with many years of expereince.

      Book Description

The Dieppe raid of August 1942 is one of the most controversial actions of World War II. Operation ‘Jubilee’ was a frontal assault on a fortified port landing the latest equipment and armour directly on to the beach. The main force would destroy the port facilities while other smaller landings dealt with anti-aircraft and coastal batteries. The raid itself turned into a fiasco. The assault force was pinned down on the beach and three quarters of the 5,000 troops landed were lost. This book analyses the disastrous raid and examines contrasting conclusions drawn by the Allies and the Germans.

4 out of 5 stars A Dumb Plan Executed by Brave Soldiers.......2003-07-30

British bookseller Ken Ford's Dieppe 1942: Prelude to D-Day follows in the footsteps of his earlier books in the Osprey Campaign series on the D-Day landings. Ford's narrative is clear and accurate, well supported by highly detailed battle maps and overall the volume provides ample narrative and graphic content on its subject. Ford's battle narrative is aided by the Canadian government's in-depth files on this operation, which provide a wealth of information on the Dieppe landing.

Dieppe 1942: Prelude to D-Day follows the standard Osprey campaign series format, with short sections on the origins of the battle, a minute-by-minute chronology (very helpful), opposing commanders, opposing armies and opposing plans. The author also provides an Allied order of battle which is good, but fails to mention unit strengths. Given the heavy casualties in the Dieppe landing, the author should have provided an initial strength for each battalion-size unit and its subsequent casualties. The author's sections on the Germans are also rather skimpy. The maps are excellent and include five 2-D maps (sea routes to Dieppe, the British landing plan, German defenses in Dieppe, Yellow Beach, the air battle) and three 3-D Birds Eye View maps (4 Commando's destruction of Hess Battery, Green Beach and Assault on Dieppe). The three color battle scenes are decent: the destruction of Hess Battery, the Attack on Red and White Beaches and Dogfight over Dieppe. The author provides a short bibliography but fails to note that key documents - such as the Jubilee operations order and captured German after-action reports - are now available on the Internet.

Ford's battle narrative is excellent and his methodology is perfect: he starts on the flanking landings (Yellow, Orange, Blue and Green beaches), moves to the main landings in the center (Red and White), covers the air-sea battles around Dieppe, then finishes with the withdrawal. In particular, Ford's coverage of the actions of 3 and 4 Commando is quite good. Readers should have no difficulty in following Ford's narrative, which is clear and succinct.

Some standard military lessons are hammered home in this volume, such as the essential fact that obstacles must be covered by fire in order to be effective. Ford notes that the German defenders were initially caught by surprise by the initial landings and had only limited troops watching the coast on Dieppe's flanks. On Yellow beaches, small groups of 3 Commando were able to infiltrate up a cliff face covered with barbed wire in 20 minutes - without special equipment! Subsequently, both the German Hess and Goebbels batteries were surprised when they came under attack by Allied commandos. A few German snipers could have prevented such nasty surprises. Another important lesson is the importance of terrain analysis in operational planning; the Anglo-Canadian planners failed to grasp the impassable nature of the beachfront obstacles around Dieppe or the loose pebble surface which effectively neutralized most of their tanks.

Ford contends that the Dieppe landings had many objectives, such as a political demonstration of a "quasi-Second Front," to give the Canadian troops battle experience, to test the German defenses, to cripple the Luftwaffe in the France, and to validate combined operations doctrine. The landings are described both as a "raid" and as a "reconnaissance-in-force." Most of these justifications appear rather specious, particularly the idea that the Soviets would see a temporary raid as a "Second Front." Rather, it appears that Operation Jubilee's main objective was to achieve a propaganda victory - to temporarily seize a port city in France, run up the Union Jack, take some photographs, and leave before the 10th Panzer Division arrived. Had the landings actually seized Dieppe, this would have been a tremendous boost to British morale following soon after disasters in Singapore and Tobruk. Churchill needed a large-scale success and something more than just small-scale commando raids. Indeed, the actual military objectives of beach reconnaissance and destruction of German coastal batteries could have been achieved by 3 and 4 Commando alone - why add the 2nd Canadian Division? Indeed, the Dieppe planning bears some of the same false assumptions and unwarranted optimism that marked Churchill's earlier effort at Gallipoli in 1915. Yet a faulty plan, probably driven by political imperatives, handed the propaganda victory to the enemy instead. The virtual annihilation of the Canadians on the beach added credibility to Hitler's Atlantic Wall and probably bucked up morale in Germany.

The manner in which Ford handles the fact that the Dieppe landings were a conspicuous disaster that achieved few objectives and resulted in 60% casualties further highlights the Twilight Zone that surrounds Operation Jubilee. Ford's subtitle for this volume, "prelude to D-Day" highlights the post-war British conviction that the Dieppe landings were a necessary precursor to the D-Day landings and that many invaluable lessons were learned. Taken in this light, of experience gained that saved lives in future landings, Dieppe's losses appear more acceptable. Unfortunately, Dieppe appears less of a "prelude to D-Day" than a "successor to Gallipoli," the infamous British landings in 1915 that also failed to achieve their objectives and cost thousands of lives. Furthermore, the idea that Dieppe was an essential prerequisite to D-Day conveniently ignores the fact that the Anglo-Americans would conduct four major opposed amphibious landings before D-Day (Torch, Sicily, Salerno and Anzio) that were much larger and that were not designed as raids. Actually, the idea that Dieppe was necessary in order to ensure the success of D-Day has become a historical palliative to dampen Canadian outrage and to soothe the consciences of leaders who recklessly threw 6,000 troops into the frying pan for dubious objectives. Yet is has been abundantly clear since 0506 hours on 19 August 1942, when the German machineguns began the slaughter on Blue Beach, that Operation Jubilee was a dumb plan executed by brave soldiers.

          Book Description

Renaissance Florence has often been described as the birthplace of modern individualism, as reflected in the individual genius of its great artists, scholars, and statesmen. The historical research of recent decades has instead shown that Florentines during the Renaissance remained enmeshed in relationships of family, neighborhood, guild, patronage, and religion that, from a twenty-first-century perspective, greatly limited the scope of individual thought and action. The sixteen essays in this volume expand the groundbreaking work of Gene Brucker, the historian in recent decades who has been most responsible for the discovery and exploration of these pre-modern qualities of the Florentine Renaissance.
Exploring new approaches to the social world of Florentines during this fascinating era, the essays are arranged in three groups. The first deals with the exceptionally resilient and homogenous Florentine merchant elite, the true protagonist of much of Florentine history. The second considers Florentine religion and Florence's turbulent relations with the Church. The last group of essays looks at criminals, expatriates, and other outsiders to Florentine society.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reader for Early Church Buffs.......2006-07-14

Caner has written a superb history of the early monastic movement in the Constantinian empire. He deals at length about those labelled "Messalians" by a church hieriarchy anxious about their own donatee status in the patronage-heavy Roman world. He has a good blend of the anecdotal reference with the historical record, and offers insights into the complex interactions of church politics with the sincere desire to comply with the more rigorous quotations of Jesus. I found his observations with regards to the Christological controversies very interesting, as they were fueled to large extent by the ambitions of itinerant monks who found economic support outside ecclesiastical circles. Ultimately, the Council of Chalcedon and subsequent imperial proscriptions made the business of wandering, begging monks a very risky one, with the result that monks became exclusive dwellers of static, easily-controlled, church-run monasteries. The day of the trouble-making, doctrine-spouting "Have Gospel, Will Preach" Monk came to an end. Caner's book belongs in the bookscase of every early church history fan.

              Book Description

With Kepler's Laws of planetary motion, the most mathematical of laws, failing to describe the reality it was designed to describe, where does that leave all of the nonmathematically based laws that underlie modern science, laws which seek to describe reality based on the agreement that they are evident to the sense of all mankind?

Does modern science have at its roots a misperception similar to the misconception that put the sun moving around the Earth, a misconception of the universe so basic as to reverse the picture of reality?

By assuming movement in the universe to be the result of historical forces, modern science has blinded itself to the measurable fact that matter requires force to remain in motion. As a result, science analyzes the universe with concepts designed to explain what is causing matter to move from trajectories assumed to be the result of historical forces rather than analyzing what is causing the matter to move in the first place.

If modern science can create laws that don't describe reality and then conform reality to those laws, if it can ignore the forces required to maintain current motion in favor of creating a physical reality that doesn't exist, then it must be operating with a defective methodology!

At the Gates of the Citadel shows that the scientific method is a tool to create facts rather than a method to analyze physical reality. It describes the mistakes, the misconceptions that have led to the picture of reality modern science paints, a picture that has no basis in physical reality.
