5 out of 5 stars The Definative Primer on Labyrinths.......2005-07-25

The labyrinth is one of those symbols that have been found in almost every sacred tradition, from pre-historic to Grace Cathedral San Francsco. Unfortunately the richness of this symbol is not yet realized in the current rebirth of labyrinth popularity.

This book is the masterwork that shows the depth and diversity found in the tradition of the sacred path. LThe labyrinth story is told through many photographs of labyrinths from all cultures and belief systems. Especially fascinating are the classical Roman and Greek labyrinths, litte known great cathedral labyrinths, Hebraic labyrinths, Native American labyrinths, Hindi labyrinths.... I suppose you have the idea by now. The labyrith is a part of everyone's cultural and faith heritage. Find your's in this magnificent tome.

4 out of 5 stars The Labyrinth Bible.......2003-12-21

This book is known by general consent as the "Labyrinth Bible" -the ultimate tool for the knowledge of the history and meaning of such a mysterious symbol.
Written by German lawyer and art historian Hermann Kern as a catalogue for a labyrinth exhibition hold at Milan, Italy, in 1981 this encyclopedic work covers the social and cultural world panorama from pre-history to modern times; the new English version is enriched with a new chapter by North-American expert Robert Ferré on modern labyrinth revival and with addenda written by British specialist Jeff Saward.
The cyclopic knowledge Hermann Kern shows in this complex, bewildering and paradoxical subject sounds sometimes ambivalent (like the symbol itself) but the book as a whole is a very good and important resource to understand the entangled complexity of this millenary symbol; with an almost thorough black-and-white catalogue (enriched with some magnificent colored photographs) of the most historical labyrinths known up to the 20th century; in addition to this the author approaches the several questions that baffle the labyrinth study like the origin of its conceptual idea or its symbolic meaning.
Historically the book is an impressive research from classical authors until recent geographical findings all over the world. However, his rationalistic approach misses the poetical (and potential) "Weltanschauung" needed to penetrate into the enlightened knowledge which transcends space, cultural concrete applications and time; besides this particular aspect this new version would deserve a better translation.
We, scholars, artists, researchers and enthusiasts are all indebted to Hermann Kern (as well as to Robert Ferré and Jeff Saward) for this (en)cyclopic work, which opened doors leading into the exciting field of further research.

4 out of 5 stars World's greatest labyrinth compendium.......2000-03-01

A museum curator, Hermann Kern spent six years researching labyrinths for an exhibition in Italy in 1980. He then expanded that information and assembled the most complete compendium of labyrinth information ever assembled, from history to the modern era. Published by Prestel, a company in Munich, Germany, that specializes in art books, this compendium was available only in German until the current English edition, which took three years to translate and update. New material has been added to cover discoveries and contemporary labyrinths of the last 20 years, making this the most complete presentation of labyrinth information anywhere. It contains hundreds of photos. Granted, Hermann Kern is quite opinionated and confident of his opinions. Nevertheless, any serious labyrinth enthusiast should own this book. I rate it four rather than five stars because, except for a color section in the beginning, all of the photos are in black and white.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Book a little outdated but still relavant.......2006-12-13

I was in a class taught by Ritchin, and we discussed this book in class. His ideas of how digital alteration would change the world were for the most part, spot on.Additionally his newer ideas on the subject were excellent. I would recommend this book for anyone interested in the subject.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating survey of photographers and photography........2000-03-03

Fred Ritchin's In Our Own Image gathers Aperture writers and photographers who survey the past and future worlds of photography. This examines the history and results of photojournalism and the influence of computers and image editing on photographic achievement, providing black and white examples throughout.

2 out of 5 stars outdated and lacking.......1998-09-18

An attempt at trying to warn publishers and the public about the uncertainty of digital manipulation as related to photojouranlism, but no one raised an eyebrow towards Ritchin's shouts of the new negativeless world.

1 out of 5 stars This is NOT funny....!!!!.......2006-10-13

This book is outrageous, all in style, language and contents and is written in extremely poor English.
Even Marquis de Sade - the French soldier and writer whose name is given to Sadism and who pretty much described the ideas of sexual perversions that prevailed in the eighteenth's century, would have disliked and avoided reading it.
I made a mistake and bought it.
    Don't make the same mistake.

    5 out of 5 stars It's Still Funny.......2003-12-31

I first heard about Henry Beard's book when it came out and couldn't wait to buy it. I got sidetracked and then came across it again only very recently. Though the book is now dated in the sense that we (more or less) know where Saddam is, the humor is still there.
Henry Beard's aim is not to make light of our soldier's dying. It is to raise questions about the aims and policies of a President whose choices put them in harms way where they continue to be.
Beard is brilliant and his book is a gem. It is still worth reading.

    4 out of 5 stars A view from Baghdad.......2003-12-30

I came upon this book while serving in Baghdad and laughed out loud. Given the conditions under which we are living, any opportunity for a laugh is welcome. Especially for those of us with kids who have read so many of these "pop-up" books at bedtime, the wit and humor in an otherwise serious situation is a welcome break. I do understand and respect the views of those who found the book objectionable, but with respect, I disagree.

2 out of 5 stars Author's Regrets Since His Comedy Turn Into Today's Reality!.......2003-12-15

I read this book when it came out and knew it would not be so funny when President Bush & Company finally captured Saddam Hussein. Today that question is answered; the joke is on political candidates, pundits and the author who doubted his capture using humor, but also on the American people in the end.

The book was complete political satire by others saying it was underground gibbet humor. When American sons and daughters are dying over real values needing changed in Iraq and the Arab world, nothing is funny. Yet, I find any speech needing to go underground in American not grounded in reality either.

Therefore, the book was just plain mean in the end, and even if you find it humorous, I doubt you will enjoy it, especially today since it is now quite wrong too.

Today, the real question is whether Saddam was captured or rescued after being held for the US$25 Million by is own family. A number of questions are raised by the disheveled, weary, and trodden state Saddam Hussein revealed in video upon his capture.

The public needs a new book answering many questions unlike this book, in my opinion.

Just looking at Saddam can see the simple facts. He was beaten, weak, and starving. The length of his hair and beard reveals no shampoo or shave for weeks. If he was simply using a clever disguise he did so quite poorly too, I might add.

Moreover, the hole dug in the floor of a cellar on the farm was one to keep him in it, not escape from it. It was only 6` by 8` at best and had no sanitary arrangements. There is no way Saddam could rise out of the hole without someone on the outside removing the mud and brinks that covered it. Thus, if Saddam is so clever, why did he not have a hole with a secondary means of escape?

I found it more interesting that two men with unused assault guns and a pistol and US$750,000 had no communications equipment meaning no one could ever warn them of anything.

If the FBI or anyone stumbled on them, it would seem he was actually a hostage being used for ransom. I will await someone else to write about this in another book.

This book of so-called gallows humor meant to hurt President George Bush for political fodder not hilarity did nothing for the author's crusade. The same can be said of the so-called capture of Saddam Hussein. Unlike this book we need a proper closing not laughing at ourselves!

2 out of 5 stars Where's Saddam? The answer is we've got him!.......2003-12-15

This book was funny, but as of today, outdated. I am sure its price will go down now, as it quickly becomes a piece of nostalgia. It will be fun to have around for novelty's sake. Good for future generations to show them the debate that was going on in this country.

                      Book Description

Partnerships and LLCs: Tax Practice and Analysis (2nd Edition), revised by Robert Ricketts and Larry Tunnell, discusses the complex issues involving partnership taxation with utmost clarity. It uses hundreds of illustrative examples, practice observations, helpful charts and insightful explanations to make even the most difficult concepts understandable. The book reflects the authors' penchant for communicating the pertinent facts in very direct language and creating a context for understanding the multifaceted issues and applying them to practice.

This new edition fully reflects all the latest developments in this complex area, including important changes in 2004 American Jobs and Working Families Tax Acts. These include changes affecting:

                      - partnership basis adjustments
                      - transfers to partnerships of property with built-in losses
                      - sale of an interest in a partnership with built-in loss property
                      - disproportionate distributions from partnerships with built-in loss property
                      - expensing and amortization of partnership organizational expenses
                      - partnership treatment of the deduction for domestic production activities
                      - recognition of cancellation-of-indebtedness income, and more

In six parts, Partnerships and LLCs: Tax Practice and Analysis covers the critical aspects of this complicated area, with individual parts focusing on partnership characteristics, funding, taxation of operations, partner's share of partnership debt, disposition of partnership interest, and distributions. From choice-of-entity considerations to sales and liquidations, the entire breadth of partnership and LLC taxation is covered. Special attention is given throughout to the complex inter-workings of rules that bind, tax and control these entity operations.

In the book's first part focused on preliminary considerations, the basic underpinnings are presented covering key areas such as the "check the box" rules, "anti-abuse" rules, investment joint venture rules, the application of partnership taxation to LLCs, liability issues, passive loss limitations, audit issues, self-employment taxes, IRS classification, tax year and accounting method selection, and much more.

The second part of Partnerships and LLCs: Tax Practice and Analysis looks at property contributions and disguised sales, transactions between partner and partnership, and formation and start-up expenses. A special summary table for the tax treatment of pre-opening expenses is included.

Next, the central core of the book explains the taxation of operations including partnership income rules, the pass-through concept, and the partner's share of income and debt. Specific rules, reporting and compliance issues are thoroughly addressed. Form 1065 and schedules L, M-1, M-2, K and K-1 are also explained.

Part four covers partner's share of partnership debt, while disposition of a partnership interest is the subject of the fifth part of Partnerships and LLCs: Tax Practice and Analysis. This section covers the amount and character of the seller's gain or loss, sales of partnership interest when the partnership holds ordinary income property and the effect of sale of partnership interest on the partnership. The final part covers distributions, including nonliquidating, liquidating, special distribution exceptions, and disproportionate distributions. This section also includes coverage of the death or retirement of a general partner and special rules for service partnerships.

The detailed and substantial coverage in the text is enhanced by the abundant illustrations and special aids to understanding, such as flowcharts, offered throughout. Partnerships and LLCs: Tax Practice and Analysis should find a welcome place with all tax practitioners.

In this personal and humorous account, he shares with us not only his experiences of being a father, but his in-depth knowledge of psychology. This book is just okay. There is some good empirical information for you. The book is geared towards Great Britain, so a little strange for an American in some respects. There are a lot of either grammatical and/or spelling mistakes, possibly typos, which may be attributable to the differences between English and American English, I'm not sure. Either way, I found that aspect of this book a little annoying. It's not terrible, but I can't really recommend it.

                          5 out of 5 stars The father's book.......2002-02-17

This was a fun book to read. Congratulations to Wiley for finding David Cohen to author this book. This book is part of a new series on Family Matters introduced by Wiley to highlight common topics relevant to the 21st century family.
David Cohen is a psychologist, writer and also film-maker, who has been involved with many interesting and funny projects. His PhD thesis, as an example of this, was on the subject on what makes children laugh. In this book he has used his talents as a reporter, a psychologist, an academic, as a father to two children and stepfather to another two. The book is very personal on his experiences and relationships to his parents, his ex-wife, present wife and children.
Every year around 120 million men become fathers, but very few were ever taught the profession of being fathers, because very few fathers tell their sons about this task. Men usually do not talk about these things and the author's father only told him two things, honour the mother of your children and send them to decent schools.
This book has 12 chapters, from the history of fathers (from Abraham to Woody Allen) to the new dependency paradox, where it seems that today's children are very reluctant to leave home. This is due to the harsh world out there with sky high rents, stress and why leave the nest, when the nest will provide you with food, drinks, computers, e-mail, emotional and financial support.
We recommend this book to both new and old fathers, you will have a good laugh, but it will also provide you with intelligent and relevant information for the task of being "a good enough father". .... .... .... .... .... ....

5 out of 5 stars Humor Helps When You're Taking Care of Toddlers.......2004-03-03

My wife and I waited until our mid 30s to start a family. I read a ton of child care guides. Now I have a toddler and one more on the way, and this book is my favorite...because it's not so doggone serious. It's a very funny sequel (Keeping the Baby Alive came first), but it is not just a joke book. If you like wacky humor like David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, or a good Saturday Night Live sketch, you will love Keeping Your Toddler on Track till Mommy Gets Back. While you are laughing though, you will realize that there is substance behind the homor. That's the best part.

5 out of 5 stars The Terror of Toddler Care Captured in a Book.......2003-06-17

True, the wonder of your newborn may have worn off a tad by the time he or she reaches toddlerhood. But this book puts all the agony and ecstacy of todder care into perspective... as only a father could experience it. Best of all, you get more laughs than the law allows, and more than a little bit of wisdom to ponder along with them. I liked this book as much as Keeping the Baby Alive, if not more. An excellent sequel.

Douglas DeMichele's 21st Century Dad: A New Father's Game Plan To Child Rearing addresses such fundamental aspects of parenthood as the cost of having a baby; how much free time will there really be; the basics of changing a diaper, burping, clothing and bathing an infant; how to better understand the new mother through pregnancy, birth, and post partum; what modern dad's are expected to do around the home; resuming sexual intimacy; "the mini-van discussion"; such "firsts" as smiling, crawling, walking, tooth, professional photo, and time alone with baby; child-rearing discussions with Mom; and the typical 24-hour day with an infant and a 2 year old. 21st Century Dad is "must" reading for all novice fathers and parents-to-be.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for Dads......its great for new aunts, uncles............1999-12-08

Oh this isn't just for daddy's out there. I am not a mother yet, but "21st Century Dad" has helped me with realistic expectations of possible parenthood. I appreciated not dealing with information overload by reading the easy format (bullet forms of lists and sidebars for those important highlights to remember). I especially paid attention to Dr. DeMichelle's emphasis on the importance of balance between mothers and fathers during stressful times. The book gave me ways to offer help with my nephews and nieces to provide their parents with quality time. Of course, I'll be sending this to family and friends with concerns about the essential basics necessary to start a family. What a great gift for all ages including grandparents having to relive those baby steps in the "21st Century".

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a "What to Expect" book for dads!.......1999-10-27

My husband never read any of my "baby" books (we have 2 kids). He read most of this one over my shoulder. As a 21st Century dad, he was anxious to read any excerpts that made me chuckle. Now it is his turn to enjoy this book. It was an easy read with lots of necessary information. The author's humor and insight made this book unique. I will buy it for future shower gifts!

                              Book Description

This humorous parody of a self-help manual was meant to offer useful advice on parenting, though from the not-so-bright mind of a contemporary father. Instead, a look into the inner workings of the rather strange and bizarre male mind is revealed, explaining the mystery behind some of the unusual behaviors seen in the dad of the 21st century. As a father and an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor who sees many children in his practice, Dr. Fong provides “lessons” on parenting through his personal experiences, such as: • To avoid spousal reprisals, never criticize your wife when she disciplines the kids. It is best to leave well enough alone, crack open a beer, and watch a mindless sporting event on T.V. This is an example of a “win-win” situation. • When having the “Sex Talk” with your kids, always ask first what they already know. You may be surprised--they may know more than you! This could be a great education for Dad! • When toilet-training a child, always be encouraging. So the next time your child pulls you to the toilet to marvel at his unusually large creation, say something positive like, “Wow, I can’t believe you made that all by yourself! Let’s save it for Mom!” Obviously, some of these “lessons” are unconventional, but they do resonate with the thinking of many of today’s fathers. Although written from the male point of view (and with the male weakness of being wrong most of the time), this book gives a fresh perspective into the relationship between father and offspring, and enlightens others into the foibles of the male mind when it comes to raising kids. In essence, this book reminds us that children do teach us about the simple joys of life that we often neglect to appreciate; and by seeing the world through their eyes, we can recapture that sense of possibility and magic that we lost along the way to adulthood.

5 out of 5 stars Hero or villain?.......2006-11-10

Champ Ferguson was one of those characters in the Civil War whose evaluation seems to depend upon which side is doing the 'evaluating'. Ferguson was hanged for murders he committed during the war in which he fought as a 'guerrilla' (Yankee definition) or 'partisan' (Confederate definition). The problem with most guerrilla/partisan fighters in Ferguson's theater of the war and also in the border states of Kansas and Missouri, was that private feuds often intruded into military actions. Hence, Ferguson's 'murder' of a wounded Union soldier is traced in several instances to attacks upon his family.

But whatever the case, when the time came to hang the tall man, even some Yankees seemed to feel that Ferguson was being hanged for actions that were being 'overlooked' in other theaters of war, especially in northern Virginia where several partisan groups had been VERY active. Commanders such as John S. Mosby and Hanse McNeill had participated in the hanging of Yankee soldiers involved in the destruction of civilian homes in the Shenandoah and elsewhere. While McNeill died during the war, his son (who took over the command) as well as Mosby were not prosecuted afterwards although in Mosby's case, there was some evidence of a desire to have him tried after Ferguson's execution.

The author gives a fairly balanced view of Ferguson's life. Unlike Mosby and other more educated commanders and/or the men who served under them, Ferguson left very little personal record of his thoughts and motives which means that those studying the man can only go by his actions and the evaluation of his contemporaries on both sides.

Champ Ferguson, like Quantrill, the James boys and other 'bloodthirsty guerillas' of the era, is a worthy study for anyone who wishes to understand the tenor of the times in that fratricidal era.

Originally published in 1942, Sensing explored the terror of guerilla warfare in the border state area of south central Kentucky. The book reveals the complexitiy of living through the Civil War, and the dangers of choosing sides. Using trial testimony for the basis of his research, Sensing reveals Ferguson as a haunting character, dangerous, cruel, and legendary. This is a must have for Kentucky Civil War fans as well as Tennessee Civil war buffs. As a resident of the area where Ferguson committed most of his atrocities, I find it facinating look at our history's darker side.

When an anthropologist writes history one expects a differant perspective. Still, I was stunned by the insight Ms. Salmond exhibited. Most surprising is how densely this book is filled with small, "throwaway" insights that reveal the nature of Georgian England, the impact of the Enlightenment and even the impact of a society, like our own, where the division of wealth has become so radical.

Most important though, is that this book reveals how the nation of New Zealand has remained a Polynesian country despite its population being overwhelmingly of European descent.

Salmond's superb account of Cook's Pacific exploration tells the story from the perspectives of both Europeans and Polynesians. It places Cook as a 'player' in the islands' internal intrigues and power struggles, especially of the Maori and the Taihitians, while beautifully delineating the various and changing responses of their 'discovers' to the Pacific 'paradise'. Cook's portrayal is highly convincing, and the book assembles a brilliant argument for its conclusions about his violent end. Salmond's work is informed by an impressive anthropological knowledge, but it reads also as a sensitive exploration of personality and as a compelling adventure narrative. I have read a good many historical treatments of this material, and Salmond's work is among the best.

                                              Book Description

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major cause of cervical cancer. Human Papillomavirus Infections in Dermatovenereology pulls together the diverse disciplines of clinical, molecular biological, socio epidemiological, and immunological research to bridge the gap between the clinical aspects and basic biology of HPV. This volume provides a much-needed overview of the scientific and clinical data of HPV and HPV-associated diseases, exploring opinions on current therapies and diagnostic methods. It critically reviews the most frequently used molecular biologic methods, evaluating their potential in HPV detection. Specialists in dermatology, genitourinary medicine, gynecology, urology, as well as pathologists, microbiologists, epidemiologists, and virologists will appreciate this timely examination of the ubiquitous pathogen, HPV.
