Great Idea Book of What Lighting Can Do to a Basic Design.......2006-03-07

This large, profusely illustrated, multi lingual book illustrated the lighting projects of Herve Descottes and his company L'Observatoire International. These projects are largely for commercial building such as concert halls, churches, theaters, art galleries and a few restaurants/lounges. But then to round it off, there are projects like the lighting of Columbus Circle in New York City and perhaps the most strange, the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island.

This book makes it clear that advanced and sophisticated lighting techniques are as an important a part in the basic design of a building as is the design of the structure itself. This is basically an idea book. Looking over these successful designs to see what was created using something as ephemeral as light. Something that we see, but which really isn't there.

SHOCKING.......2005-07-16

...Is the best word to describe NAMBUL 3.

If you know anything about what occurred in the WWII concentration camps, NAMBUL 3 will still surprise you. The plight of the prisoners hits very close to home, and Mr. Lee's statement, while heavy handed at times, is still frighteningly powerful.

Hopefully, the graphic depictions of the evil that the human psyche is capable of as depicted in this book will not deter you from reading this work of genius.

Political indifference & the effects on a new generation.......2001-10-01

Despite editorial reviews rating Ms. Blackman's account of her actions and experiences in Sarejevo to be "unfocused" and Ms. Blackman "her own personal heroine", I found her writing to be clear and concise regarding the "peacekeeping" mission and it's reception from those it was "protecting". Her personal story of the chaos and destruction of the country and it's people was informative and gripping at the same time, bringing home the reality of one woman's determination to do more than watch the horror and politics of war from her television set. Although I read her book in it's pre-edited format, her talent for telling the real story of the victims of war is obvious, and her selfless acts of giving and loving make this a book worth reading for those interested in not only the historical and religious reasons behind the conflict, but for anyone wanting to understand the psychological impact of patriotism and forced allegience on a young and idealistic generation.

When R. Murray Schafer first published TUNING OF THE WORLD (the subtitle of this edition) in 1977, it had a stunning and lasting affect on musicians and recordists throughout the world. Every facet of this work is important to know about and the narrative still reads like a contemporary novel - impossible to put down and never dated. He informs us how to re-train our ears to listen better and more wisely. He defines, for the first time, the soundscape and the myriad ways it fits into and affects our lives.

This book is seminal to my work as a naturalist and sound designer and I have read it many times in the past three decades. It is that important.

As a naturalist whose work is based on natural sound, R. Murray Schafer's book is the bible. As a narrative it reads like one of the finer novels of the 20th Century. For insight, content, and context about the soundscape and its relevance to every aspect of our culture while, at the same time, embracing a large number of disciplines, nothing else on the subject since Helmholz's mid-19th Century tome on acoustics, "On The Sensations of Tone," comes close. His identification of the "soundscape" as a feature of our natural and urban environment is a major conrtibution to the language and the realm of ideas given our compulsion to opt for the visual for elusive clues that contain otherwise distorted information. As Schafer deftly shows, it is within the soundscape that Truth is told. In 1977, when the book was first published, Schafer correctly anticipated what would happen absent some serious attention to the soundscape as a vital resource. There's still time. But precious little to learn how to listen again. Schafer's work elegantly points the way.

"An examination of the soundscape, a neologism coined by analogy with 'landscape'. The soundscape is the environment of sounds, music, and noise that surrounds us. Originally written in 1977, this book evocatively examines historical documents to figure out how the past sounded, and it paints a dark picture of the increasing pollution of the acoustic environment. Twenty-five years after it was written, I'm sure conditions have continued to worsen. One observation made in the book is that, before the 20th century, noises were almost all discontinuous: church bells, the clank of the anvil, horses' hooves clattering. Electricity and the electric motor have changed this, and continuous white noise is omnipresent. Consider my daily life as an example: the hum of the air conditioner at home, the rumble of the Metro and bus I ride to work, the whine of the computer fan and the drone of the fluorescent lights at work, the distant sound of the highway. There's practically nowhere I could go to escape these endless sounds, short of driving far out into the country. Schafer's book is an eye-opening explanation of the problem, but sadly also a depressing one; while some strategies for improving the future are suggested, clearly no one has bothered to implement them."

Schafer's approach is innovative, sensitive to the multiple demands made on music teachers in the school systems, and wide awake to the genuine creativity that exists in every student. I have used material and ideas from it for years and continue to find inspiration and ideas in its pages. It is a crime that this book has been out of print for so long.

This book was required as part of my first master's level course. I was hooked from the beginning! Ms. Ellison's style of teaching is beneficial to all students. She works hard ensure that her students are achieving. She gives many examples of practical classroom exercises that she uses and that others could easily implement.
How I wish we lived in her school district!
