    Book Description

In the past several decades the popularity of garden design and garden history has exploded. Books on the subject are instant bestsellers and there are entire television channels devoted to the subject. Dumbarton Oaks and Middleton Park in America, the Taj Mahal in India, Versailles in France and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon are just a few of the famous gardens instantly recognized worldwide.

In Garden History, author Tom Turner explores more than 150 gardens spanning 40 centuries of western garden design, beginning in Egypt and West Asia moving northward to Europe and ending in the Americas. Garden History takes us on a grand tour of gardens, garden design and the reasons for making gardens throughout the centuries. Turner traces the evolution of garden design addressing the ideas and historical conditions while showing how differing social, artistic, philosophical, religious, geographical and historical factors have governed the creation of gardens for the past 40 centuries.

More than simply a catalog of beautiful gardens throughout the world Garden History examines the fundamental questions of garden design: the What?, Where?, Why? and How? of making gardens, explaining how the gardens of each period relate to a wider tradition of garden design. Garden History will appeal to both practitioners of landscape architecture and the weekend gardener with a green thumb.

Macromedia Flash: Super Samurai doesn't cater to new users of Macromedia's Web animation tool, so if you are just learning to wield Flash, skip this book. However, if the weight of Flash in your hands feels balanced and comfortable, perhaps it is time to learn how to make the blade sing like the rushing wind, making effort invisible.

Parallels to swords and samurai aside, Flash Super Samurai compiles the experience of 12 gifted Flash designers. Much more than a book on Flash animation, it shows the reader how to create interactive elements, how to create 3-D Flash elements, how to use XML and Flash together, discusses the intricacies and pitfalls of adding sound and how to make sound work for you, and much more.

Nine chapters and three appendices detail tricks and techniques for adding physics simulations to Flash animation (think bouncing billiard balls), programming sound, using XML and Flash together, using JavaScript and Flash together, and dynamic Flash pages created on the fly based on user input. Each chapter is well illustrated and heavily coded, and the accompanying CD-ROM includes all the necessary project files.

The way of the samurai is one of intense concentration and the constant search for wisdom, a description that fits the contributors to this rich, dense book for advanced Flash developers. Filled with ActionScripts and Flash animation that goes far beyond basic tweening, this book is invaluable for those looking to make the most of Flash as a tool for animation as well as for interactive site development. --Mike Caputo

          3 out of 5 stars A Bit Too Theoretical.......2002-09-24

This is not a bad book. It covers a lot of ground. But at times it gets a bit too theoretical, rather than being down to earth. I saw the reviews that liked it, but several of them were by financial managers. For those of us who are not financial managers, there is quite of a bit of mathematics and theory. For example, for capital budgeting there is a whole chapter of mathematical formulas with a small paragraph saying no one really uses the formulas - they use calculators or computers. But there was no discussion about what calculator or computer program to buy or how to do the calculations with a calculator or computer. The book is also pretty much out of date, espeically in areas like the tax chapter.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand for the non-technical person.......2001-12-16

This book does a great job of helping managers understand the financial world. It takes the basics of finance and accounting and describes them in a very non-technical and easy to understand manner. I am a degreed accountant with a strong finance and economics background and find it difficult to explain things to business owners and managers in a way that makes sense to them. This book resolves that problem. By the time they read through it once we can at least talk together and I don't feel like I am using a foreign language.
A very valuable book that should be required reading for anyone who goes into business for theirself or moves up the corporate ladder to a position where understanding these things is beneficial for their career. While it is not a treatise on the details of accounting and finance it will give you a broad enough scope to understand what you should be doing and why things work the way that they do. A recommended read.

5 out of 5 stars Great book when paired with another one........2001-06-15

This is a very readable book about business finance and accounting. I have used it, along with a study guide I prepared for it, to help train people who were becoming instructors for business training classes. It certainly helps to be able to discuss the material in the book with someone who knows more about what's in it than you do. Even so, Droms does a good job with his material and you can use the book for later reference -- I do. You'll get even more out of this book if you order another book to go with it. That book is "Business Basics Bestseller #1." [...]

5 out of 5 stars Great for project managers.......2000-06-16

It is concise and easy to understand. Helps you understand basic accounting and business finance without having a background in accounting.

4 out of 5 stars A fine overview for nontechnical managers........1999-07-07

Professor Droms has re-edited his well known book: FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING FOR NONFINANCIAL MANAGERS. I, for one, am very glad to see that it continues in print and available.

This book provides remarkable insights into why things financial are the way that they are. His examples are clear and understandable. His explanations are coherent and make sense.

Perhaps, the only critique I can make for this useful and easier to follow book, is that it is too short.

              Book Description

During the past twenty years, more than 15,000 members of the U.S. armed forces have died in on-duty mishaps—compared with fewer than 1,000 killed by enemy action. But when such accidents occur, the military imposes a rigid code of silence. Commanders task subordinates, who are often unfamiliar with accident investigation procedures, to investigate these tragedies behind closed doors. This dysfunctional process almost guarantees that the mishap victims themselves are found to be at fault. Overlooked, and therefore uncorrected, problems soon lead to additional tragedies.

From an expert who observed the system from the inside, Silent Knights reveals some of the military’s best-kept secrets. Alan E. Diehl explains the complex causes of military accidents in layman’s terms and helps readers understand the dangers of undervaluing safety, health, ergonomics, and training in the military. He describes how cover-ups have long caused countless deaths and wasted billions of dollars while degrading defense effectiveness. Dr. Diehl calls for a new “GI Bill of Rights” that improves the safety and health of military personnel and establishes an independent agency to investigate military accidents. This book is for anyone concerned about America’s defense and the well-being of the men and women who bravely provide it.

3 out of 5 stars Good detailed info clouded by too much axe grinding.......2007-06-28

              .

Deihl's book outlining the 'whys' of military accidents is quite informative. Without giving up too much of the book, I'll say I learned a great deal of his descriptions of how smaller events unfolded into large tragedies. Whether it's a copter crash on a routine training mission or a friendly fire death in the midst of battle, Deihl does an excellent job of linking the chain of events that lead to unneccessary deaths of our people in uniform.

A major drawback to this book is the very large chip on Deihl's shoulder. Far too often he lets his text act as a sword by which to settle old scores against the brass. These parts distract mightly from the overall impact of this book and any decent editor would have Deihl go back and tone down the personal animus in these pages. Rather than painting certain high ranking brass as purposefully putting troops in harms way, the book would have been better by exploring the nature of the bureucratic beast that allows senior officers to put careers above safety (which by the way, is the stnadard operating procedure of all bureacracies not just the military). After all, Deihl does document where some junior officers and front line troops have 'gone along' with cover-ups and misinformation in order to save their career. Why are these acts treated with understanding when the same behavior by the brass is painted as manslaughter?

A very uneven book. I gave it three stars because the technical explainations of accidents is very well written. I would have given it a higher rating if they had editied the bitterness.

5 out of 5 stars Revealing the military's uncounted casualties.......2003-04-15

How many journalists who follow the American military have ever noticed that in the last quarter-century more U.S. servicemembers have died in preventable accidents than in combat? Not enough, as Al Diehl's superbly told and provactive book, "Silent Knights," makes absolutely clear. Diehl shows how the American public has been hoodwinked by the military brass into believing that "training accidents" and other non-wartime military deaths are an unavoidable consequence of military service. Nothing could be further from the truth. If you have loved ones serving in America's armed forces, this is a must-read book if you wish to learn the true risks of military service. After you've read it, do something more: write your member of Congress & demand they investigate the problems outlined in this book. You will be doing your loved one, and yourself, a huge favor...

              5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK.......2002-07-24

This book shows that our country's enemies are not the only people killing our sons and daughters. Dr. Diehl has done an excellent job of stating the facts in a way that is easy to read and understand. His extensive knowledge and political insight opens the reader's awareness that problems with safety, accident investigations, coverups and scapegoating that permeate in the military is a cancer which every citizen should be outraged about. Readers of this book will easily understand that our military leaders are not only wasting billions of dollars of tax payers money but also that more military men and women are being killed in peacetime accidents than in war. All Americans should read this book.

              5 out of 5 stars A DEFINITE EYE-OPENER !.......2002-06-13

SILENT KNIGHTS is a real eye-opener and should be read by every righteous citizen of this nation. I now realize why there are risks taken by our military everytime they step into an airplane to protect the United States=they are unaware pawns.
We call ourselves a united states but we are NOT united because we are having the "wool thrown over our eyes" by unscrupulous members of our military and by some in the Congress who are more afraid of the dollars spent than by providing safety and reliable on-the-job training for the military men and women who defend us daily.

5 out of 5 stars Cover-ups in the Military happen far to often!!.......2002-06-08

I am far to familiar with the stories told in this book regarding military accidents and their cover-ups. I found myself right in the middle of one of the largest cover-ups in Naval history. These events happen more often than the American public could possibly ever imagine. I personally have been contacted by hundreds of individuals whose stories could have been added to this long awaited book. Silent Knights is an excellant expose, as well as a legacy told for many heros who can longer speak for themselves. Those of you who read the stories in this book should be outraged! After reading Silent Knights, my sincere hope is that in some way Dr. Diehl's book will initiate the change that all American's, especially we who have lost loved ones in the military so desperately seek! My sincere thanks and appreciation for what you have tried to do.

                Book Description

Much has been written about the origins of the great push which led Europe to colonise sub-Saharan Africa at the end of the nineteenth century. This book provides a new perspective on this controversial subject by focussing on Europe and a range of empire-building states, Germany, France, Italy and Portugal. The essays in this volume consider economic themes in addition to the political and cultural aspects of the transition from commerce to colonies.
Unlike other texts on the subject, this refreshing new volume redresses many imbalances, by:

*considering of a number of empire building states, instead of just one of them
*Giving prominence to powers other than Britain
*Giving weight to economic themes without losing sight of the equally important political and cultural aspects of the transition from commerce to colonies
*Taking the analysis beyond the 1880s, and revealing the broader picture - covering the time of the first attacks against the slave trade (during the 1780s) to the premiseof the 'scramble' (1880s)
*Reviewing the colonial process (excepting that of Great Britain) as the reaffirmation and exacerbation of the Ancien Régime, and as a reflection of the highest form of mercantilism rather than the highest form of capitalism
*Illuminating the importance of circumstantial phenomena, at the scale of Europe and of its different countries.

By emphasizing the variety of those involved, and the diversity of regional and local situations, this book shows how necessary it is to link the general history of ideas, national- and micro-history. The contributors suggest a true cosmopolitan history of imperialism, one which is of great relevance in our times of globalization and reconstruction since September 11th, 2001.

                Book Description

This engaging memoir presents one man's lifelong love of the ocean and gives a highly personal, behind-the-scenes look at California's magnificent and innovative aquariums. David Powell, for many years curator of the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, tells the story of his life as a pioneering aquarist. From handling great white sharks to transporting delicate fish on bumpy airplanes to night diving for fish in the Indian Ocean, A Fascination for Fish describes many of the mind-boggling challenges that make modern aquariums possible and offers an intriguing glimpse beneath the ocean's surface.
Powell's career in diving and aquarium development goes back to the beginning of modern methods in both areas. From the early techniques he devised to get fish into aquariums alive and healthy to his later exploratory dive to a depth of eleven hundred feet in a two-person submarine, Powell's action-packed narrative inspires laughter, wonder, and philosophical reflection. A Fascination for Fish also includes many stories about Powell's diving adventures on the California coast, in the Sea of Cortez, and in many remote and exotic locations around the world.

5 out of 5 stars excellent autobiography of a fascination for fish.......2007-09-21

Anyone who is curious about sea life or the creation and running of aquariums... and for any scuba diver - you should buy and read this book. David Powell clearly descibes how he became interested in fish and how he managed to get into aquarium displays. He even tells about his dating life in college (loved the octopus pet and dozens of aquariums he kept in his little apartment). And it also satiates the need to understand how Monterey Bay Aquarium came about (as well as many other national and worldwide aquariums were designed and started), the work and dedication to making it happen and run smoothly. Next best thing to being there and doing the hands on behind the scenes tour! Well written, good length, excellent read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book about a pioneering aquarist and his work.......2001-05-03

This was a truly excellent read - if you are interested in how they make those impressive aquarium displays, how they catch the livestock, overcome the challenges of adapting them to aquarium life and lots of stories along the way, this is the book for you from the man widely acknowledged as being "it" when it comes to designing pioneering public aquaria.

Highly recommended for anyone out there fascinated by fish and the marvellous public aquariums around the world. Enjoy it!

David C. Powell provides the reader with an excellent insight into the life experiences of a dedicated biologist. His detailed descriptions and insights of all the efforts that went into sharing his exciting discoveries is a joy to read. For anyone who visits aquariums this is a must read book. It provides rare, behind the scenes, information about the enormous effort and dedication involved in providing public aquarium exhibits. Dave's style has the flavor of Ricketts and Stienbeck all in one.

                5 out of 5 stars Fish Stories -- Fascinating!.......2001-04-19

If among the things you have to confess you know nothing about are designing, stocking, and running a public aquarium, you can change that and have a darned good time filling in these particular voids. David C. Powell, who knows more about running aquariums than just about anyone, has written a memoir, _A Fascination for Fish: Adventures of an Underwater Pioneer_ (University of California Press) that tells about his unusual career and has more than its share of pleasing anecdotes.

Powell took the first fish he caught as a kid and slept with it under his pillow. He maintained the lobster tank at a fancy Malibu restaurant. When he read Cousteau's first book, _The Silent World_, he knew he had to start diving. As he kept specimens in his home aquarium, he joined the Marine Aquarium Society of Los Angeles. A fellow member told him of a job opening as an aquarist at Marineland of the Pacific; it was just what he wanted to do, and from there he worked at various aquariums, directing the live exhibits at the Monterey Bay Aquarium until retiring four years ago. He now seems to be the most frequently consulted consultant whenever towns or nations want to set up aquariums.

Powell writes with admiration and affection about the creatures he has to capture and then keep in as home-like an environment as possible, including the wonderfully named sarcastic fringehead, the "thumbsplitter" mantis shrimp with its faster-than-the-eye claw, and many more. He tells about the process of capturing samples in many different ways, but diving and capturing fish is the easy part. Transporting them is hard. There are different gadgets and containers that have to be used, including the truck transport named the "Tunabago." It is planning the displays of the fish that obviously has given Powell the most satisfaction in his career. His description, for instance, of the responsibilities of putting up the largest window in the world, a gigantic acrylic pane fifty-five by fifteen feet, thirteen inches thick, and weighing thirty-eight tons, is completely engrossing.

Powell's book, a mixture of autobiography, oceanography, ichthyology, museology, and funny stories, is a delight. In seemingly effortless style, he conveys the excitement even in the minor aspects of his career. He gives a final essay on the importance of aquariums (disdained by Cousteau as "fish prisons") in bringing people closer to nature and in promoting the conservation that could keep the oceans healthy. His book is a worthy summary of a lifetime's effort in that cause.
