Excellent book but not for everyone .......2004-11-23

A wonderful edition that focuses on how to tone your work and recommended for those interested in making their own manga and how to tone them. Even though the book uses actual tones (Letraset, etc), you can apply what you learned on the now growing use of digital tones. It covers everything you'll use a tone for from characters, shading, backgrounds, and effects. It even mentions proper use, techniques, and example pages includes specific tones used.

This is not a book to get for the young, or those who do not like S&M drawings which are shown near the end of the book. The examples are more on the provocative side and are anatomically detailed (expect nipples and aereolas) than the other How To books.

for serious toners a must.......2004-05-27

been using tone for 2 years now, and even living here in japan. i can tell you i have yet to see many tone books, well maybe 2 others under i.c. screen. and they were not really that good either. but this book tells you how to do some sweet effects, picks up where how to manga vol.3 left off, so if you use tone, and want to have a look like the japanesse comics, i would say not getting this book is a mistake.

Very Helpful, but not for kids........2004-02-08

This book is very helpful in explaining the use of tones for dramatic shots, overlapping techniques, etc. However, this books is definitely not for the younger aspiring artist. As the previous reviewer mentions, the book presents some very graphic and risqué imagery that is reminiscent of hentai. I would highly recommend the other book in the How To Draw Manga series (Pen & Tone Techniques) if this book is meant for a younger audience, or if you are offended by such material.

Good, but..........2003-09-11

As an aspiring artist of manga style, I bought this addition to the How to Draw Manga series. It was helpful in many places, considering before I didn't really understand what tone was. The tips and tricks are quite nifty, and the book comes with a few sheets of tone to practice with. Unkaku Koyama does a great job explaining the hows and whys.

But my main gripe with the book is in someplaces, it appears to be a How to Draw Hentai. He often shows tone as applied to extremely detailed ... female bodies. The section on how to apply tone to simulate leather is downright dirty. I guess the tip-off should be the flash of [underwear] on the cover, but I didn't notice that when I bought it, and was extremely surprised when I started reading.

Overall, highly recommended for people who need help with tone and don't mind somewhat explicit images. Also, those looking for tips on applying tone to male characters had best look elsewhere. There are three male figures in the entire 135 pages, and what appears to be a man's hand shoving a young girl onto the floor. For all of you who need help with tone and do mind explicit images, I'd suggest avoiding specifically pages 45, 51, 52, 84, 85, and 87.

HALLOWEEN FUN WITH THE PEANUTS.......2005-01-06

I'll admit to being a somewhat casual reader of comic strips. I have a few favorites I follow regularly, but around the holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas is really when I sit down and read a lot of newspaper strips. I guess I just love seeing how they celebrate the holidays and their usually quite funny.

This collection of Peanuts strips is all about Halloween as Charlie and the gange go trick-or-treating, have parties, and dress up for the season. It's not a complete collection of all of Schulz strips to be sure, but it's a nice, representative gathering of material culled from over the years. also included throughout is mostly forgettable tips for throwing parties, decorating, and recipes. None of it worth much and I would have preferred to see more comics and some in color as opposed to that stuff. all in all a nice collecton.

Like Getting A Few Rocks in your Treats Bag.......2004-11-30

This book was a mixed treat. For a book entitled A Peanuts Halloween it could have been a much better editorial effort. It fails to really capture the warmth of Schulz's vision of Halloween. The Halloween activities were extremely basic -- other activity and craft books are far better in that regard. The selection of strips was not very good. Everything is printed in black, orange and white only --hard to view for very long. It also is not a complete chronological collection of Great Pumpkin strips and there are no full color strips included at all. I expected more for Halloween,just like Sally, Linus and Charlie Brown, and I got a lot less. I now really know how the Peanuts gang feels when disappointment hits with the realization that great expectations are not met. If you are a die-hard Great Pumpkin fan, then get this book. If you like an authentic dose of that uneasy feeling that comes with frustration, disillusionment and dissatisfaction, then get this book.

GREAT PEANUTS HALLOWEEN BOOK!!!.......2004-10-04

I highly recommend this book, especially for any die-hard Peanuts fan. It was wonderful to see how Snoopy, Charlie Brown and the gang changed over time. And I happen to like Schulz's humor better when he first started writing and drawing; it was more childlike.

The comics are Halloween and monster themed and some of them are hilarious, ones I haven't seen in a long time. Of course there is lots about "The Great Pumpkin" but how could it be coming Halloween and Linus does not mention him!

Read it and enjoy. Good old fashioned comics and humor!

Marcus B. Toney was a convinced Methodist, confederate, and slavery partisan who became an early volunteer for Confederate service from his home near Nashville, Tennessee. He served with the First Tennessee Volunteer Infantry Regiment in the campaigns in West Virginia, at Shiloh, Chickamauga, and the Wilderness, where he was captured. This book studies the so far unexplored operation of the international monetary system that prevailed before the emergence of the international gold standard in 1873. Conventional wisdom has it that the emergence of gold as a global anchor was both an inescapable and desirable evolution, given the exchange rate stability it provided and Britain's economic predominance. This study draws on a wealth of archival sources and abundant new statistical evidence (fully detailed in the appendix) to demonstrate that global exchange rate stability always prevailed before the making of the gold standard. This was despite the heterogeneity among national monetary regimes, based on gold, silver, or both. The reason for the stability before the establishment of the gold standard is France's bimetallic system. France, by being in a position to trade gold for silver, and vice versa, effectively pegged the exchange rate between gold and silver at its legal ratio of 15.5. Part I of the book studies exactly how this mechanism worked. Part II focuses on the respective behaviour of private concerns and arbitrageurs on the one hand, and authorities such as the Bank of France on the other hand, in order to underline the constraints and opportunities that were associated with bimetallism as an international regime. Finally, Part III provides a new view on the collapse of bimetallism and its replacement by a gold standard. It is argued that bimetallism might well have survived, and that the emergence of the gold standard was by no means inescapable. Rather, it resulted from a massive coordination failure at both national and international levels - a failure that was a preview of the interwar collapse of the gold standard.
