5 out of 5 stars Very inspiring, if not completely detailed.......2007-09-05

I loved this book because it has so many pictures. It is most interesting to see aspects of the rides that you might not get to view by visiting the park. The enthusiasm of this book is inspiring for anyone who is interested in theme park design. It does not get into anthing too technical, or show you what an Imagineer does from day to day on a regular basis. I would reccomend this book if you are interested in seeing Disneyland from another angle or if you want to be a theme park designer. It is a very good book if you aren't looking for technical advice, just to have fun and get excited!

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Book!!.......2007-07-11

Fabulous book!! Framable quality pages and chock FULL of amazing images. Details the making of films and has frame by frame development by the Imagineers. If the book seems a little spendy, it is. And it is worth it. Not just a coffee table book. You will page through it over and over again and find new things each time!

4 out of 5 stars I admit it..........2007-04-02

...I didn't realize that Imagineering was going to be exclusively based on the Disney theme parks. I was... well, more than a little disappointed when I opened it up and looked for the many illustrations and stuff about the making of the movies, that I confess I thought would be there. The book in itself was nicely put together, and DOES look attractive, in terms of what was in there. I can clearly see why anyone would greatly enjoy it. Nevertheless, in my case it sits collecting dust on my shelf.

I blame myself: I should have looked just a little deeper in what the book was going to be about, before purchasing it. A technical explanation of the process of the theme parks' creation was... uh, boring. *laugh*

5 out of 5 stars great book for the Disney fan.......2006-11-10

This is a beautiful informative book. My kids just enjoy looking at the pictures from their favorite movies and the theme parks. The accompanying stories are interesting and full of fun facts. So much is written about the imagineers it's nice to find one book that is first hand accounts and backgroundn info. If you've ever visited WDW or Disneyland this book gives you a whole new insight into what went into creating these magical places.

5 out of 5 stars Any Imagineering Enthusiast Needs this Book.......2005-12-01

Anyone who has ever dreamed of being an imagineer needs this book. It has interesting construction photographs and artist renderings, however it doesn't have as much in depth and truly new information as I hoped it would. Overall, worth the money.

Disney is not just for kids. Over the past 10 years, the Walt Disney Company's chief executive, Michael Eisner, has commissioned some of the most renowned contemporary architects--Robert Venturi, Robert A. M. Stern, Arata Isozaki, Frank Gehry, Aldo Rossi, and Michael Graves among them--to design important buildings for the company. In the process, Disney has set new standards for postmodern architecture and has become one of its leading patrons anywhere in the world. The resulting projects, which include quirky, fantastic theme parks, hotels, resorts, movie studios, and offices, are evidence of how Disney's long-standing use of popular, often surreal, imagery and iconography has been absorbed into the architects' styles. This stunning volume offers original architectural drawings and superb color photographs of the projects alongside an expertly written text that incorporates extensive interviews with the architects and executives involved.

4 out of 5 stars A non park-architecture focused book.......2003-03-25

I thought that the authors focus on non-park buildings was a refreshing break from other books. The ability to design the ideas of Walt Disney into the buildings used by the company itself, not just the guests, is a very interesting topic often overlooked by other authors. The architecture found in the parks is also facinating but I feel that this book focuses on the more overlooked buildings. I found the authors views on these buildings interesting and well thought out. The photographs are very impressive and often are of areas that the average guest would not be able to access. Overall, I think that anyone interested in understanding Disney as a company and how they have worked the 'Magic' into every aspect of these buildings will enjoy this book.

5 out of 5 stars A great book about Disney-Architecture.......1999-02-07

All I can say is that this one is an absolute great book for all the people who are interested in Disney-Architecture. I have read this one for several times now an I always find new facts when I read it again! Highly recommended!

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, lopsided view though.......1999-01-11

This will look great on your coffee table but dont expect to see a complete treatment of the subject. Too much coverage on "traditional" buildings such as Disney offices and resort hotels. Not enough coverage of the attractions and the parks themselves. Rather than cover the facinating topic of Disney architecture and the role it plays in guests experiences, the author dwells on their favorite architects.

5 out of 5 stars "The Aspiring Disney Architect's Bible".......1998-08-24

Outlining the brains and bases behind the fantastic institution of Disney architecture, "Building a Dream" covers all of the basics, giving credit to the creative geniuses behind the mythical Disney charm. Providing the delightfully exaggerated imagery that we have come to love in full color (when applicable), "Building a Dream" shall remain the true enthusiasts' God-book for quite a while. From the Swan and Dolphin to the Sleeping Beauty castle, this book has what you need.

1 out of 5 stars Should be Eisner/Disney Architecture.......1996-10-01

This book is about Michael Eisner's patronage of big namearchitects 1985-1995. There's lots about Michael Graves, RobertA. M. Stern, Gehry, Gwathmey and that ilk. If you think this slaphappy stuff is architecture, this is a fine book about it. As an architect for Disney 1975-1983, I have a huge admiration for, say, Bill Martin, Dave Ott and Glenn Durflinger's Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World. You won't find much about that kind of Disney architecture in this book. Ms. Dunlop is the architecture critic for the Miami Herald and based on her acknowledgements, she didn't talk to anyone who actually knew anything about Disney architecture. There are a few pages on Disneyland and even Kem Weber's utopian design for the Disney Studio (1939), but Dunlop gets all breathless only about the Venturi inspired junk that Eisner pays top dollar for these days. Even the great work they are doing today, such as Indiana Jones or the Twilight Zone hotel aren't treated with any interest. It's just sad that one of the few books on the subject was written by someone who doesn't appreciate it.

Book Description

Dynamic superheroes star in this entertaining instructional book on the art of creating powerful comic book characters. Opening with the fascinating history of the genre, the book's legendary author/teacher then illustrates the basic structure of both male and female superheroes, their classic facial expressions, body language, and ways to evoke other aspects of the superhero personality. Typical story settings, climate, and terrain are all delved into, as are structuring a story and script, making rough sketches, thumbnail layouts, and spot lettering.

Joe Kubert's artistry has produced extensive work for Flash and DC Comics, the newspaper strip "Green Berets," a 3-D process for comic books, and a graphic novel, "Fax from Sarajevo," which earned the prestigious Eisner Award. The long-established Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art is located in the author's hometown, Dover, New Jersey.

excellent book by a great comic book artist.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent primer.......2005-12-10

This book is a great place to start if you're interested in drawing, particularly for comics or comic strips. Joe Kubert is a master in the field, and this book gives not only tips on the tools of the trade, but advice on any number of topics related to the art of comics. Even better, there is a section at the end with Kubert's roughs for a published comic book that show you how it's really done. Excellent.

Though if you do finish this book as I have you will be amazed at how much this book helps your drawing ability. this book is for beginners and intermediate artists alike.

    (From the DJ)

Butoh is an explosive, convention-shattering performance art that has redefined the limits of dance and theatre. The form was created by a handful of avant-garde postwar Japanese artists who drew upon their native agrarian myths, the iconclastic theatre of Antonin Artaud, and the influences of Western modern dance.

But Butoh is more. It is perhaps the most daring attempt yet made to translate the msyterious, often tormented life of the unconscious into the communal medium of theatre.

The first true Butoh performance, an adaptation of Yukio Mishima's novel Forbidden Colors, scandalized Japanese audiences when it premiered in 1959. Its creator, Tatsumi Hijikata, was banned by the Modern Dance Association and branded an outlaw dancer. In the years that followed, a small group of talented dancers and choreographers extended Hijikata's vision and, more recently, traveling Butoh troupes have conducted international tours in America.

In Butoh: Dance of the Dark Soul, Ethan Hoffman creates virtually a new genre of photographic theatre and gives us an invaluable contribution to the literature of contemporary dance and theatre. The performers featured include Kazuo Ohno, Yoko Ashikawa, Akaji Maro and the group Dai Rakuda Kan, Min Tanaka, and many others.

Mark Holborn's essay is based on extensive interviews with Hijikata and other major Butoh pioneers.

          Book Description

Errand Boy in the Mooseland Hills is a little-known classic of 19th-century Canadian literature, never before translated from the original Icelandic.

The book is based on Magnus Bjarnason's experiences as a young boy when he and his family migrated along with other Icelanders to the Mooseland Hills, in rural Nova Scotia. The stories chronicle his adventures as a hired hand working for a farm family, and then at a gold mine. The author introduces the men with whom he worked and retells stories that, like the Norse sagas, present men of strength and high principle tried by hard circumstances.

Errand Boy in the Mooseland Hills, presented to English audiences for the first time in this appealing translation by Borga Jakobson, will endure for its high literary quality and for its unmatched portrait of a rare chapter in Nova Scotia's rural life.

According to radio psychologist and provocateur Laura Schlessinger, most unhappy marriages are alike—-and can be changed in just minutes a day. In this companion to Dr Laura's best-selling The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands, women are the source of the problem and have the power of the solution. Wives, brainwashed by "feminism" and politically correct psychotherapy, have become dismissive of their husbands, denying them tenderness, pillow talk, admiration, and dinner on the table, says Schlessinger. Her prescription is deceptively simple. A wife must stop defining her power in terms of possessions, position, and independence. Instead, she should remember that "men are simpler in their emotional needs" (they are demoralized by not feeling cared for) and exercise her "awesome power to change her man and her marriage." The payoff? A husband who will "die for us"--and take out the garbage without being asked. Schlessinger coaxes readers in attitude adjustment through an assessment of their marriage and dozens of specific suggestions about compliments, conversation, counting blessings and lacy underwear. She is at her best in asking readers to explore anti-male bias in advertising and Internet jokes. Her tart commentary is interspersed with journal exercises, testimonial transcripts from her radio show, and listener letters. The book's central ideas (devotion robust listening, sensuality) are too often eclipsed by its gender typecasting of both partners and frequent frying of the feminist idea of mutuality in marriage. Both men and women will surely bristle at the book's anachronistic assumptions: for example, a silk teddy manipulates men and nothing spells loving like something from the oven. Dr. Laura's self-promotion and the defense and repetition of her earlier ideas also undermine her message. Still, it must be noted that many of her listeners and readers find Schlessinger's ten-minute marriage manager to be hopeful and helpful. --Barbara Mackoff

          Book Description

A companion to Dr. Laura's best–selling The Proper Care & Feeding of Husbands, Woman Power is filled with new information as well as exercises and action points to help women's lives and their marriages thrive.

In her most provocative book yet, The Proper Care & Feeding of Husbands, Dr. Laura urgently taught women that to take proper care of their husbands is to ensure themselves the happiness and satisfaction they yearn for in marriage.

Countless women call Dr. Laura unhappy in their marriages and seemingly at a loss to understand the incredible power they have over their men to create the kind of home life they year for. In The Proper Care & Feeding of Husbands, Dr. Laura showed you–with real–life examples and real–life solutions–how to wield that power to attain all the sexual pleasure, intimacy, love, joy, and peace you want in your life. Her simple principles have changed the lives of millions.

Now, with Woman Power: Transform Your Man, Your Marriage, Your Life, you can work with Dr. Laura as she presents more thought–provoking ideas, as well as questions, exercises, activities, with plenty of room for entries, thoughts, and journaling.

"The principles included in The Proper Care & Feeding of Husbands have salvaged and revitalized innumerable strained, stagnant, boring, disappointing, annoying, frustrating, and even seemingly dead marriages. I have had women calling almost daily, bitterly criticizing their men, reporting months of seemingly useless marital therapy (aka "gripe hours"), and at their wit's end about what to do with their marriages. After I ask (well, really, nag) them to try just one of the hints found in this book, they call me back amazed at the positive results in their feelings about their men, their husbands' demeanour, and the atmosphere in the home.

"They see progress! They feel powerful! They are happier! Their marriages are experienced as more of a blessing. My deepest hope is that this book will bring that blessing to your home."

I have the Proper Care and Feeding of husbands and I enjoyed that book. Woman Power is full of blank pages for you to write your thoughts and ideas. I think it is a waste of time unless you just LOVE to journal. If you took the useful information and took out the blank pages the book is about 2 chapters. My advice is to put your money to better use at Victorias Secret. Your husband will get a lot more out of it!!!

          4 out of 5 stars Great Book-very Helpful.......2006-06-29

This is a great book, a follow-up to The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands, although to be honest, this book can stand alone even if you didn't read the PCAFOH. It helps you to see where your relationship may be failing and helps you to get back on track. A husband and wife can work on this book together if they so desire, to strengthen their marriage.

The basic premise of the book is that today, many of us that are married tend to neglect our spouse, not intentionally but because other things start to creep up our priority list (such as work, commitments to organizations, other family members problems, etc). As a result, our spouse often finds themself sliding down the priority list. While in an emergency a spouse may have to take a back seat for you to address the pressing problem, in every day life you should put eachother first.

This book will help you do this.

PS is anyone else bothered by the fact a "kid's review" is posted on this book, discussing things a kid should not know about? someone under 13 has never been married and does not know about marriage, the feminist revolution, or fulfilling your "duty" in sexual terms other than what they read or hear from adults, so why is that review allowed here, lol?

          5 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK!!.......2006-06-11

I Think people should stick to the book and not try to put someone down on what they believe in. Whether anyone believes it or not, she is helping people and I'm one of them. If anyone else think they can do better then please go on the radio and we'll listen to you. I think people talk the way they do because they're jealousy and admiration for her and it's tearing you apart that she DR.LAURA IS SOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD. I have all her books and it has helped me tremendously. If you feel so bad about her show on the radio, then don't listen to her show and don't come on amazon searching for her books. Don't use this means to talk bad about someone else. Before u complain about other people please look at ur life. I love Dr Laura and her books are awesome. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful look at leadership and at combat.......2007-08-10

Woodward had done a masterful job, with his writing assistant, of describing the issues of command, the concern about sending others into combat where they may lose their life, the need to keep in mind what is central about a mission, and so many other thoughts about what leadership means. This book is a study of BOTH (1) management of a large task (be it war, be it a large company or nonprofit, be it of government) when dealing with an adversary compelled to fight you (be it the other side in a war, be it a company fighting you for market share, be it a Democrat or Republican that believes as you do not), and (2) of management of a military war where weapons are wielded by you and weapons are wielded or threatened against you. The real-life drama of uncertainty of events, of certainty of purpose, and of just what went on in this saga is of interest to very many readers. I have British friends, I have Argentian friends, and no matter which side you believe is right (both have their points) this is a good book about a mission one is given and how one needs to carry it out, and the thoughts and second-thoughts that must go through any leader's mind.

Read this as a book about leadership, and you will do fine. Read this as a book about war, and you will also do fine. Read this as a book about both, and you'll get even more out of it.

5 out of 5 stars One Hundred Days -- And Still a Damn Near Run Thing.......2007-02-17

As Wellington famously said of the Hundred Days Campaign culminating in the Battle of Waterloo, the Falklands Campaign was a also damn near run thing, according to the Battle Group Commander, Adm Sandy Woodward, in this excellent book. Writing in what can best be called a distinctly British style, Woodward takes the reader into the bridge of the Hermes, his command ship for the Falklands expedition. What we get is a brutally honest, technically detailed, and gripping narrative not only into how the British pulled off a decisive victory, but also the self-doubts and mentally taxing minutia of a Commander sending troops and sailors into harm's way. This book is especially valuable for its detailed description of how navies fight. This is no small task. For example, the reader learns how:

          1. submarines track ships and the risks they run to track them and shoot them. The example of the sinking of the General Belgrano is first rate
          2. how a routine matter such as cross-decking troops between ships bedevils commanders and can end in tragedy
          3. ship's tactics for defending themselves against aircraft (this is particularly helpful. In the US military, we have become so accustomed to air and sea superiority that those who operate on the ground take it for granted. It's not! It must be gained and earned - if need be, the hard way.)
          4. The inevitable tension that will arise between sea, air, and land commanders during the prosecution of an amphibious campaign. We get Woodward's side here, but he is brutally honest on when he was right and when he was wrong.
          5. The role of destroyers, frigates, aircraft carriers, amphibs, and supply ships, and the risks they ran -- and still do -- to do their jobs.

This is one of the only books I know of that actually explains how modern navies fight, and it is thus indispensable to navy officers and to those who seek to learn more on control of the seas.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional war memoir!.......2005-07-23

This is an absolutely first-rate memoir by the man who led the British fleet to victory in the Falkland Islands War. Only 50 years-old when he was chosen to lead the battle group to recapture the islands in 1982 (hard to believe this gentleman is now 73!), Admiral Sir John F. "Sandy" Woodward was courageous and competent commander. That being the case, he is also refreshingly honest and humble as he tells his remarkable story.

As the Admiral mentions in the epilogue, many will always regard the Falklands as having been "a pushover war - the mighty Brits crushing the ridiculous Args" (349). But as this book makes clear, it was anything but a cakewalk. The Argentinian sailors and pilots were brave and worthy oponents. The British fleet took heavy casualties: 6 ships sunk (2 destroyers, 2 frigates, 1 amphibious warfare vessel and the transport vessel Atlantic Conveyor with its precious cargo of 10 Wessex and 4 Chinook helicopters). Another 10 ships were badly damaged. Many of these were not sunk only because the Argentinian bombs reguarly failed to detonate. The British, of course, won decisively though, thanks to the professionalism and courage of the British forces. But it was an intense and bloody six weeks.

The campaign was also a turning point in the history of naval warfare. Although anti-ship missiles were first used to sink Syrian missile boats by the Israelis back in 1973, the destruction of HMS Sheffield by the French Exocet missiles fired from Super-Etendard fighter-bombers grabbed the attention of the world's militaries. Newsweek's subsequent cover-story on the incident read "Falklands Fallout: Are Big Ships Doomed?" Many wondered if large warships had been rendered obsolete by the effectiveness of anti-ship missiles. Indeed, the two British aircraft carriers in the South Atlantic were very vulnerable. If even one of them had been put out of commission by an Exocet, it is unlikely the Falklands could have been recaptured. It is very interesting to read about how the British struggled with some of their new high-tech weaponry such as the Sea Dart. It took some failed attempts in battle before the bugs got worked out and they got comfortable with the new system.

Admiral Woodward is an excellent writer. His descriptions of the battles are riveting, especially the moments of calamity such as when HMS Sheffield was crippled by Exocets. You really get a sense of the fear, anxiety and adrenaline. It's as exciting as any Tom Clancy novel without a doubt.

          5 out of 5 stars Woodward/Courage 101.......2004-07-21

Into the finest traditions of The Royal Navy ( and any other righteous, but self-anylizing, self-depricating, hero-by-fire war-tested veteran), we are allowed an inside view into a theater-of-war that we, who have never paid the price, secretley covet. Gallentry, selflessness, pride of country, pride of duty, discipline, all seem to be the lost arts of the past, but Woodward and others in this telling instruct us that, to this day,our young men and women rise to the occasion, as in the days of old. What is that extraordinary part of us that is able to trandsend all our own limitations and push beyond to victory, over our enemy and over ourselves? This book may help you to answer that question!

This book presents an edition of seventeen manuscript sermon texts for the preaching of the crusades from the thirteenth to the early fourteenth centuries by five prominent scholars and churchmen. The majority of these texts have never been printed before. This book presents an edition of seventeen ad status model sermons for the preaching of the crusades from the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. The majority of these texts have never been printed before. They are unique sources for the content of crusade propaganda in the later middle ages, giving a rare insight into the way in which propaganda shaped the public's view of crusading during that period. Accompanying the Latin texts is an English translation which is aimed at making these sources accessible to a wider circle of students and scholars. The first part of the book consists of a study of these model sermons which focuses on their place in the pastoral reform movement of the thirteenth century, their specific character as models for the use of crusade propagandists, their internal structure, and the image of the crusade conveyed in the texts.
