Book Description
Beginning with agoraphobia and claustrophobia in the late nineteenth century, followed by shell shock and panic fear after World War I, phobias and anxiety came to be seen as the mental condition of modern life. They became incorporated into the media and arts, in particular the spatial arts of architecture, urbanism, and film. This "spatial warping" is now being reshaped by digitalization and virtual reality.
Anthony Vidler is concerned with two forms of warped space. The first, a psychological space, is the repository of neuroses and phobias. This space is not empty but full of disturbing forms, including those of architecture and the city. The second kind of warping is produced when artists break the boundaries of genre to depict space in new ways. Vidler traces the emergence of a psychological idea of space from Pascal and Freud to the identification of agoraphobia and claustrophobia in the nineteenth century to twentieth-century theories of spatial alienation and estrangement in the writings of Georg Simmel, Siegfried Kracauer, and Walter Benjamin. Focusing on current conditions of displacement and placelessness, he examines ways in which contemporary artists and architects have produced new forms of spatial warping. The discussion ranges from theorists such as Jacques Lacan and Gilles Deleuze to artists such as Vito Acconci, Mike Kelley, Martha Rosler, and Rachel Whiteread. Finally, Vidler looks at the architectural experiments of Frank Gehry, Coop Himmelblau, Daniel Libeskind, Greg Lynn, Morphosis, and Eric Owen Moss in the light of new digital techniques that, while relying on traditional perspective, have radically transformed the composition, production, and experience--perhaps even the subject itself--of architecture.

abnormal psychology.......2002-11-29
As the title indicates, Vidler's recent publication guides us to see the underlying forces that caused warping and irregularity in contemporary architecture. Beginning with defining various conceptions of 'phobias', Vidler navigates us into the realm of abnormal psychology. Critical theorists, such as Georg Simmel and Walter Benjamin, are also introduced to interweave the ideas of 'estrangement' and 'flaneur(metropolitan nomad wandering unconsciously)'. In so doing, he allows readers to understand underlying mindset behind the buildings of Libeskind, Himmelblau, and Eric Owen Moss.
timely assessment.......2001-04-15
This is among the books that has given me a wholistic view of the design field- combining aspects of culture and society at the subliminal framework of understanding. It is a good read and very objective in its approach. I personally enjoy criticism and have read books by Victor Margolin and this one analyses the merits and demerits of a field that draws influences and in turn influences a wider spectrum of issues. It is interesting to perceive the manner in which the book uses a synchronic approach to arrive at a very comprehensive analysis of the current day status. For a young designer this book gives a lot of thought to treating design as a part of a larger framework. It forces one to think on larger issues that can be solved through design.

How to Make Artist's Brushes.......2007-07-16
As a practicing artist, I am always looking for new ways to make expressive and appealing images. I work mainly in porcelain pottery, decorated with slips and glazes.
I bought this book to learn how to make brushes, brushes which will enable me to create more distinctive images. My needs are somewhat different from what the book provides, but I found enough information to assist me in experimentation with making tools for expression.
The book is more geared toward industrial manufacture, but there is more than enough information and example for the individual to make implements of good quality and function. The difficulty lies in gathering materials and finding a place to work where the cat will not try to supervise...
I recommend this book for all artists who like to make their own tools.
An examination of an important tool.......2000-05-15
There are countless books written on watercolor, acrylics, oil paints and even a few on gouache and casein, but the common thread linking all of the painting media has been overlooked . . . until now. Brushes are the most common of all artist's tools, yet the vast majority of artists are woefully uninformed about how to pick out a good brush and, even what the difference is between the good, the bad and the mediocre brushes.
In writing this book, Jacques Turner has drawn from long experience in the brush-making business to provide us with a truly useful manual on what goes into the manufacture of a good artist's brush as well as the reasons and uses for the various shapes and hairs that seem to complicate and confuse our choice.
For me, this book has opened up possibilities that would have been remained closed. My new-found knowledge has certainly proved its worth when buying brushes.
A quick and easy read, Turner writes for the artist, not the research scholar.

A great little Peanuts book.......2004-02-23
You Can't Win Them All, Charlie Brown, originally published in 1971, consists of the second half of the book Ha Ha, Herman. The pages aren't numbered, but I would guess there are somewhere around one hundred pages of cartoons here. I picked this book up when I was just a wee little darkgenius starting out in the world. Not only is this collection of Peanuts cartoons funny (but that goes without saying) but it features some pretty historically significant material. For example, here you get to relive Snoopy's first fight with the cat next door. Snoopy and Woodstock have a big fight over Snoopy reading War and Peace just one word at a time, but when Linus comes up screaming that the cat next door has Woodstock, Snoopy leaps into action. Eventually reunited (and, in Snoopy's case, recovered), Snoopy and Woodstock engage in an interesting game of football. Later on, Snoopy joins forces with Lucy in preparation for the big Christmas ice skating show only to get a bad case of stage fright at the last minute. He's much more comfortable hanging around "campus" as Joe Cool, cruising for "chicks" in his turtleneck.
There are two significant storylines about Peppermint Patty (whose real name can actually be found in these pages, and that's a bit of trivia I never knew before picking up and rereading this old paperback recently). The weird kid from camp, better known as Marcie, enter Patty's everyday life, thereby introducing the whole "sir" thing to the Peanuts tradition; when the girls invite "Chuck" over for a rousing game of Ha Ha, Herman (which is basically hide and go seek), Patty accidentally hurts a still-hidden Chuck's feelings after Marcie asks if she is in love with him. Peppermint Patty also faces the horrible ordeal of having to wear a dress to school, thanks to a new dress code. When she decides to defy the code, she hires Snoopy as her lawyer.
Any Peanuts book is a guaranteed winner, but You Can't Win Them All, Charlie Brown is particularly appealing given its insight into some of the earlier years of Charlie Brown and friends. Just remember that this little book is really just the second half of the larger volume Ha Ha, Herman.

Great book if you've tried everything else..........2006-08-06
Living with a 12 year old son who has been diagnosed with ADD has been a challenged. We tried it all... counseling, bio-feedback therapy, family therapy and finally medication. I wished I'd read Millar's book 3-4 years ago when some of the techniques would have been more age appropriate.
I also have a 13 month old and have read his other book, Raising the Preschool Child -- which is a precursor book based on the same theory. I've used some of his "no" techniques with success already. Short 2 minute timeouts have already shown my daughter that Mom really does mean "no" when she says it. It doesn't stop her EVERY time, but she now at least pauses (which for 13 months is a great start). I haven't tried the technique for temper tantrums... YET. But that is only because I want to start slow and work one area at a time.
I agree that some of the book is outdated by today's standards. However, parenting, to some degree, is timeless. The parent's job is to train our children that they aren't the center of the world, that parts of life are not fun and rules and authority exist for a reason. The consequences of NOT teaching our children these life lessons are tragic. Possibly AS tragic as not nurturing.
Methods on balancing training and nurturing may vary, but both components need to be there. I like how this book gives concrete examples, techniques and the theory behind them.
I have a bachelor's degree Psychology and have read a TON of parenting books and articles -- and yet parenting is still a challenge! If you've read other parenting books, subsribe to all the parenting magazines... yet nothing has worked... this is definitely worth a try for the spirited child.
Outdated, but has some good points........2006-04-19
This book was used as a text book in a child behavior class at East Tennessee State so this review is written from the point of using the book in that context.
Although this book was worth reading because of the solid points that Dr. Millar makes about the influence that parental conduct has on child behavior, it is outdated in his behavior modification techniques. By today's standards, some of the techniques Dr. Millar used seem a bit silly and others simply make some psychologists today cringe due to the potentially adverse effects they may have.
I have no doubt that Dr. Millar was very well versed in his field and was extremely knowledgeable in his time. This book however was written in the 1980's and was "updated" in 1994 with a new preface and introduction. Looking at the book using today's standards, we can see how far we have come in our understanding and techniques of behavior modification.
It is also the general consensus of my class that the book was a bit bland and lacked any finesse in conveying the lessons there in.

Outstanding advice.......2005-03-11
I loved this book!!!! My daughter's pediatrician recommended the book when I described some of the behaviours she was exhibiting that were a problem. Up until that point I had been following some poor advice from a very popular book called "Raising your spirited Child". Once I found Dr. Millar's book our lives changed. We followed the advice and saw a complete 180 degree change in our little girl. Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr. Millar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Omnipotent Child - Third Edition.......2000-04-20
I was getting exceedingly frustrated with my 9 year old son. I chalked up his behaviour to being a boy; being emotional and full of energy, but my efforts were getting me nowhere. In fact, his behaviour was deteriorating. While reading this book, I felt like the author had been spying in my home. After the introduction of the Chip System that the author recommends my son went through all the predicted stages of fighting the system. But it was amazing how quickly he, and in fact his younger sister, were able to turn their behaviour around. We now have more peace, loving, energy and cooperation in our household then I would have thought possible.
Great advice.......2000-02-17
This book contains an amazing amount of great advice and common sense for parents today. It is very easy to put your child on a pedestal above all others. My husband and I did so with our little one for 5 years. We ended up with a very poorly behaved little girl. This book was recommended to us and our lives have been incredible ever since. We learned how damaging it is to give your child a sense of complete omnipotence. We thought we were building great self-esteem in our child. What we were really doing was creating a child who had little tolerance for others and particularly anything unpleasant. this book gave us the common sense approach to parenting that we needed. Thankyou Dr. Millar for the great book.
A life saver.......1999-10-13
About a year ago my husband and I realized our sweet little girl had some behaviour problems. We believed we were providing a balance of discipline and love and lots of attention to our child and therefore could not figure out why she was so out of control. As an infant she had been assessed as a "spirited child", which she still is. We took the advice of an infant behaviour therapist, along with the advice in the book "Raising your Spirited child" and just accepted that our daughter was special (that has not changed), and that we could not expose her to standard discipline. By the time she was 4 1/2 we needed help handling her. Our pediatrician recommended we start giving our daughter some consquences to bad behaviour and to stop treating her as a mini adult and most importantly , read this book. I did. I could not believe my eyes. Dr. Millar was describing my child. My husband and I immediately carried out the advice in the book and literally within days our lives changed. We now know we can really enjoy our daughter and I am so thankful we found this book. READ IT!

The best parenting book available.......2004-11-11
This book was recommended to me when I went to mypediatrician desperate for help with my very difficult to parent child. I left upset that I only had a book to go home to read. Howeever, in the first hour of reading I knew I'd hit the jackpot. Dr. Millar was describing my child!!!!! The advice and techniques listed in this book are the most effective I've ever tried. If you have a "difficult" child, follow the advice int his book and your life will change immediately. AWESOME!!!!!!!
A parent's dream come true.......2001-04-12
Having a child who was quite difficult to parent I have read MANY parenting books. I can honestly say this book is the best I have ever read on the subject. It tells parents why the 90's style parenting we tend to lean toward is not effective. What I mean by that is that the adult is the parent and the child is the child. This book basically gives parents the permission we need to take the role back into our hands and be our child's parents. we are teachers to our kids , not their friends( alhtough that is not to say that we can't thoroughly enjoy each other). We must teach our children that there are consequences to negative behaviour. After all, discipline is teaching. The best thing we can do for our kids is to set them on the right path for their future. If we teach them to be tolerant, responsible and to understand that they are not the only ones in the home who has needs, they are much more likely to succeed in life. Since I read this book our life with our daughter has done a complete about-face. she has man more friends, she is co-operative, loving and loveable. Our whole family has benefited from Dr. Millar's sound advice and practical approach to parenting.
Simple Discipline - My spirited child is no longer the boss!.......1998-08-24
For every parent with difficult (self-centered, intolerant, low self-esteem) children 3-12.
Are you having trouble trying to figure out what consequence is appropriate, keeping your cool, looking for all those good behaviours when the "all powerful" little one was making constant demands. Does it seem like there is not much love left between you? Look no further.
This book is easy to read, amusing, very practicle info on setting up routines to restore peace in your house. Simple steps to get your child moving: in the morning, at dinner, bedtime, chores, homework too. No drugs (interesting chapter on ADD, ADHC), no nagging, easy as pie...I had my 5 yr old running around trying to avoid punishment cards (mostly taking away privileges like candy, am/pm TV, etc.) All in a flash, no nagging, no yelling, some supervision.
There is a temper tantrum program, a jar program(drop in tokens, 3 tokens=a punishment), a punishment card program. Implemented some steps right after reading this, and it worked like magic. Never seen my child be so motivated. WOW, wish I read this years ago. This book should given to every parent when their kids reach 2-3...read it before looking for help elsewhere. Don't take my word for it. Discipline with firmness and kindness. Develop your child's inner policeman, help your child learn to cope with anxiety, disappointment, anger. Get him/her ready for the real world.
Why is this not on the best seller list--it should be. I read the third edition, 1994.

Solid research and fascinating intellectual inquiry.......2001-12-27
Author John R. Galvin explores the personalities of three key figures whose actions and discourses constituted the roots of the American Revolution. Galvin's admirable scholarly discipline and his keen analysis deserve praise. His scope is very precise: it begins and ends with the period where Hutchinson, Adams, and Otis were interacting. Readers interested in Hutchinson, Adams, or Otis should read this book to gain a deeper insight into their personal philosophies and into the political struggles and challenges which made or defeated them, and which ultimately constituted the unyielding backdrop of their social existence and historical judgement. Readers interested in mid-18th century Massachussetts or American politics will learn much about the many groups and organizations of the period.
Politics of Pre-revolutionary Boston.......2000-11-12
John Galvin guides the reader through Boston politics in the fifteen years preceding the Revolution, 1760-1775. Mr. Galvin focuses on the three men he contends were the most influential in the events in Boston in the pre-revolutionary years (Thomas Hutchinson, James Otis, and Samuel Adams).Very readable and a good source of behind-the-scenes activity that led to the beginning of the American Revolution.

Book Description
This book provides critical analysis and historical evidence to refute the claims of the nuclear power industry that nuclear power can alleviate the build-up of greenhouse gases and reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil. It also reveals the hazards of further proliferation of nuclear weapons from the growing quantities of plutonium generated by existing nuclear power plants throughout the world.
Prepared under the auspices of a scientifically respected institute, "The Nuclear Power Deception" exposes the flagrant misrepresentation of nuclear power as "to cheap to meter" and environmentally benign and safe by government and industry officials in the 1940s and 1950s when they had ample evidence to the contrary. Instead they suppressed that evidence, much of which is presented in this book.
Essential background reading for students, teachers, peace and environmental activists, and others concerned about the threat nuclear power continues to pose for the future of humankind.
