I've been looking for maps that depict DC through the years. I live in SouthWest DC in one of the few new buildings that obviously took the place of many things that were here before. This book has been so helpful in showing the development of DC through the years. Between maps I've never seen before, plans and photos, this is a must have for anyone who wants to see the changes in DC in the past two hundred years.
Terrific Research Guide.......2005-10-01
As the title suggests, Washington Through Two Centuries is a terrific book for those interested in examining Washington's evolution over 200 years. I would caution however that it may not be a great book for someone who wants a condensed, easy to read story. More of a reference guide than a coffee table book, it takes a bit of time to digest.
Fabulous Planning History.......2005-03-27
Mr. Passonneau's book on Washington successfully covers the planning history of this country's capitol city, and essentially uses it as an illustration of how planning can guide development of a city on many levels. The maps in this book are the culmination of a thirty year project which, because it involved historically accurate hand drawings of the facades of all of the buildings in the covered area, is certain never to be undertaken again. Thus this book is not only extremely informative and interesting from historical, social and political perspectives, it is in itself a beautiful work of art, a feast for the eyes.
A Great Book for Architects and Planners.......2004-07-10
Joe Passonneau has combined history, planning and architecture in our nation's capitol that has a certain relevance to every serious, large city in the country. What you really learn here is how architecture and planning can work together in a creative relaltionshiip and both better for the experience. If the elected officials were crafting laws with the same care, concern and perhaps even love, that architects, planners and a host of other insightful non-professionals were using to build Washington, DC, we would all be better off today.
The maps alone are glorious and probably worth the price of the book itself. Study them and you will start to understand and appreciate the historic process by which cities either reinvent themselves or fail to do so. Architects, planners and history buffs should own this book. Period.

It's not easy to find a really good book about making rubbings. In fact, this is the only one I've seen.
This art form is accessible to almost everyone, yet few realize the resources around them.
"Making Paper & Fabric Rubbings..." covers a wealth of ideas and techniques. You'll enjoy this at home, but especially as you travel. If you keep a diary or journal, you'll find wonderful new ways to illustrate it with rubbings. If you're a fabric artist, rubbings can be great material for unusual quilts and wall hangings.
Even better, once you start making rubbings, you'll look at the world in a different way. You'll notice more than colors and shapes, but also textures.
I go through a lot of books. Some delight me at first, and then I don't refer to them again. This one is a keeper.

I got one of these for my artist sister, then read the surprisingly high-ranking tempest-in-teapot review below, and immediately perused the book, including especially the "Methods" chapter. This title definitely rates 5 stars, without reservation.
First of all for the *superb* color reproductions of a huge variety of exceptional rubbings (i.e., rubbings of exceptionally beautiful objects).
Then I read the Methods chapter sections -- comprising 5 or 6 diverse methods (including wet and dry paper techniques and even Gyotaku -- Japanese "Fish Printing"!). Each is spelled out step-by-numbered-step (with up to 9 steps), including preservation -- of both the rubbing and the rubbed object.
"Sketchy"?? The first Methods chapter page sez it all: Here are the simple basics, now try them on a variety of objects around the house, and you'll quickly learn about the major problems and challenges (listed FYI), and the medium's opportunities. 'Nuff said, now go out and try your hand at one or more of the "field trip" methods so fully spelled out. This ain't rocket science, it's quick ramp-up fun!
The book also discusses rubbing's history, kids' projects, papers, crayons etc., and lays out a dozen crafts projects -- all on shiny white paper, compleat with pre-printed bookplate on the front fly!
What's not to like, or more to ask for?!? DO get this bargain title (through Marketplace resellers) if you're the slightest bit interested in this fascinating and potentially hugely educational craft medium. Enjoy, enjoy!...
Intriguing Art Form.......2000-11-15
Rubbings of Gravestones have been an art form for centuries and Ms. Firestein has researched her medium thoroughly. I just wished she had gone into more detail on how to begin. She needs to include details for first-timers. Her instructions were very sketchy and hard to follow.

Excellent book.......2003-11-04
This is not one of those for-dummies type of photography books. You need to be at least a serious amateur in photography to find it interesting. The book is reasonably dense, in format and in content. Dense as to be useful to serious photographers, but not too much so as to be boring or impractical.
The book is quite complete. From equipment, to exposure, to development, to printing and toning, the authors demonstrate their all-round technical knowledge and practical experience in the insights and advises they provide, and support them by an abundance of illustrative photographs with technical detail (lens, film, exposure, etc.)
The authors appear to be partial to the Ilford XP2 film and use it in the majority of the photographs in the book. But XP2 is a C41 (color) process film. For a book on black and white photography, I think it would've been more useful to show more examples in typical black and white process films instead. That would at least give users some idea about how various film work in various developers and for various applications. Given the scope of the authors' experience, this surely is just a matter of choice.
Some discussions, such as those on black and white developers, do not have as much depth as I wish to learn, and some even appear to be a bit off-handed. This could be due to the authors' strong convictions.
The book tends to avoid discussing commercial products -- which may be a good thing or bad thing for different readers, but nonetheless it contains a number of plugs for British manufacturers (The authors are British I believe.) Personally I do not find this to distract from the quality of the book, especially since I share the same inclinations myself for those manufacturers.
I enjoyed the book enormously. It's full of content. I read some of the chapters more than once, and each time finding myself learning something new. This is a book that tries to teach you something, rather than just to sell you a book. It's well worth it.
The Bible of Black & White.......1999-06-28
Superbly written and organised. Assumes some knowledge of black and white (but not a lot). Gives detailed "how-to" for most everything you might want to do. For example: Toning of prints is covered in spots throughout, and there's also a chapter on the subject. In the chapter, use of brand name toners is described. They tell you how to tone the print in a step-by-step manner. Then, they also tell you how to make your own chemicals, provide safety notes, some words of wisdom from experience, and what's not important too. In all, this book will help advance a beginner and teach some new tricks to advanced photographers.
Extremely Technical.......1999-03-12
I was looking for some information to re-fresh my memory after two black and white photo college courses, so I turned to this book. Although I am sure it is very well written, it was very confusing and too technical for the little information of was searching for. I am going to put it on my bookshelf for reference, maybe after a few more classes. It does give great ideas on how to create different effects, but I feel I need a little more experience first.

I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK BY RALPH KINER FORMER MLB PLAYER. HE GIVES US MANY DIFFERENT STORIES COVERING HIS PLAYING CAREER AND ALSO HIS BROADCASTING CAREER. FROM HANK GREENBERG, BING CROSBY, ELIZABETH TAYLOR TO ESTHER WILLIAMS RALPH HAS KNOWN QUITE A FEW HOLLYWOOD AND BASEBALL STARS. HIS STORIES ARE VERY INTERESTING AND HIGHLY ENTERTAINING. THE ONLY DISAPPOINTMENT I HAD WAS THAT HE DID NOT DISCUSS HIS EARLY LIFE AND BASEBALL CAREER IN GREATER DETAIL. NONE THE LESS THIS IS A GOOD READ FOR ALL BASEBALL FANS.
Homer Would Have Been Disappointed.......2006-05-25
Concerning "Baseball Forever", expectations are key. Most buyers will be familiar with Ralph Kiner's career. This reviewer was expecting vastly more reminiscing about the "good old days" with the New York Mets of the 1960s. Following that, he had hope for tales of RKs days as a slugger with the Pirates and Cubs from the late 40s to mid 50s. Indeed, BF contains some of those recollections, but far too few. What this reader received instead was a rambling, verbose and stridently opinionated treatise on virtually every aspect of the game of baseball. It may not be fair but RK is typecast in many minds and trivia and tales from the good old days are what the guy has to offer. In fairness to RK, he has a voluminous knowledge of the Game, but parts of BF are simply too serious! For the record, RK was mistaken when he wrote that Casey Stengel was no longer with the Mets in 1964-he was very much there and RK was in the broadcast booth above! He also left out the punch line in that infamous "Kiners Korner" interview with Clarence "Choo Choo" Coleman. Those looking for fun reading will be disappointed here! BF is definitely not for longtime Mets fans. BF may appeal to SERIOUS students of the game, but certainly not at hardcover prices. Take the paperback! (The interview ended with RK explaining "Choo Choo is not the talkative type, folks"). That tidbit was more of what this reviewer was expecting but failed to receive. (Come on, old Mets fans! You must remember Homer)
Kiner's Got the Korner on Great Stories.......2006-02-25
Few tell a better baseball tale than Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner. For those that remember his playing days this book is sure to bring back great memories. Others, like myself, may only know Ralph as the great color man for 40+ years with the New York Mets. Trust me, it won't disappoint. Great tales of yesteryear combined with a wise outlook on the modernizing of the game and players. Kiner is honest and frank.
An easy read and a must read for those who love baseball.

Ralph Kiner's _Baseball Forever_, written with Dany Peary, offers readers a chance to enjoy the gentlemanly voice of Ralph Kiner, a Hall of Fame outfielder and mainstay of Mets television broadcasts since 1962. Filled with amusing anecdotes and shrewd observations, Kiner reflects on his life in baseball from the post-World War II era to the present. His story is told with candor, humor, and reassuring modesty, particularly when he discusses the highlights of his impressive Hall of Fame career in the 1940s and 1950s. He presents a reasonable, fair perspective on all aspects of the game from the post-World War II period to the present.
For those unfamiliar with his career, Ralph Kiner was a renowned home run hitter for the Pittsburg Pirates from the late 1940s through the mid-1950s. Despite the surge in home runs in the mid-1990s, Kiner remains the only player in history to win six consecutive home run titles-a true testament to his greatness as a player. Two reasons why Ralph Kiner is not better known are that he played most of his career with the cellar dweller Pittsburg Pirates and his career was shortened (to ten years) due to a back injury.
One of the strengths of the book is its structure. _Baseball Forever_ is both a chronological biography and a thematic study of baseball. This balance is handled elegantly. Chapters deal with such issues as players' colorful lives on the road; integration in the late 1940s and the internationalization of baseball in the present day; the labor movement and the rise of the player's association; the value of baseball records; baseball celebrity; and the life of a broadcaster.
Two of the strongest chapters address labor and race. In 1951, Kiner and Allie Reynolds, a pitcher for the Yankees, negotiated on behalf of players for a higher minimum salary, a more generous pension, and a percentage of television profits for the World Series and the All-Star game. This was during a time when baseball owners were all powerful due to the reserve clause, which gave owner's contractual rights to a player for the duration of his career.
Kiner's descriptions of Jackie Robinson's historic 1947 season and the slow process of integration in the late 1940s and 1950s are thought provoking. He provides a snapshot history of many great African American players who came to prominence in this era, including Dodger pitcher Don Newcombe, whom Kiner notes is not yet in the Hall of Fame but deserves to be. Kiner discusses the even slower process of integration at the management and ownership-levels in baseball.
Kiner notes in the Introduction, "it occurs to me that if you combine the years I was a young fan with the more than 60 years I have been employed in baseball, that total represents more than half the lifetime of America's pastime as a professional sport." Reading his book is an opportunity to deepen one's knowledge of baseball and life in America in general. He tells so many memorable stories about the game.
This is an excellent book for baseball enthusiasts of all ages.
Good primary source on baseball history in USA.......2005-08-12
I purchased the book for my teenager in order to give him a historical perspective on baseball in the US, however, I ended up reading the entire book first and enjoyed the many anecdotal stories and historical references from the humble beginnings of the players union to minor and Negro league ball to expansion, etc. Although Mr. Kiner generously offers his personal opinions on various important, defining changes in the baseball world, he objectively and interestingly includes other points of view.
The first half of the book is excellent baseabll history, but eventually detours towards Hollywood personalities and life styles.

A great book that covers relationships with your child along with child development basics. Clearly written and based on years of experience and data.
It covers a great range of topics, including ones often left out of general parenting books, like issues of physical contact among preschoolers (what's appropriate, what's not) or friendships.
They have great suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter for parents who want to delve deeper into any one topic. It's easy to choose the chapters you are most interested in and read those first.
It's become one of the books I recommend to people, which is rare for me. I have read a lot of child development and parenting books and this is one of the best.
A New Favorite.......2003-11-05
This book has easily become one of my absolute favorite parenting books. That is saying a lot, as child development is my passion, and I have read nearly everything! This is much more than just a parenting book. It is a valuable resource for parents to learn more about their children's development, and how to grow together as families.
The authors do not water down the content, as many other "fluff" parenting books do. It is packed with valuable information and suggestions about how to parent your particular child. I appreciate how the book made me evaluate my parenting style and expectations versus my children's personalities. My son, in particular, has a personality that sometimes makes me cringe, because it is so different from my own at times. This book really makes you think!
The format is not exactly easy to just scan, pick, and choose. It is straight forward, with many little narratives and examples of various family issues and ways they can be handled. Many of the more complex issues are covered, too, such as "spirited" children, overly anxious kids, family conflicts, parent/child personality clashes, etc.
If you are seeking to improve communication with your children and become a more effective parent, I highly recommend this book!

This book approaches the education of children in a manner that has been forgotten in our everyday lives. It goes back to basics that are easy to apply and that just make sense. It is a must read for all parents, educators and anyone who plays a role in the life of a child or a youth. Highly recommended. Easy to read and handy to have as a reference.

Very creative set of parenting books..........2007-03-23
There are two books that go together here. My little girl reads the children's book (it's cute) and I have read the short and informational parent guide. It's not overly complicated or long (I don't have time for long books!) and the Children's book is fun for my little one to read. Interesting set of books -- it's nice that she took the time to do the set so the child can learn in a fun way rather than me barking orders at her! In Faithfully Parenting Teens: A Proactive Approach, pastor John R. Colonel Joseph H. Alexander has brought forth an outstanding book on "The Battle History of the United States Marine Corps". His skill in writing is further enhanced by his selection of photos, maps, and sketches, and the inclusion of sidebar stories gives the reader more "meat and potatoes" in regards to the men and machines of war.
Col. Alexander's manner of writing and attention to detail brings you up close and personal without over-glorifying battle. The narratives as well as true-life events are quite captivating, and will hold your interest from beginning to end. It's refreshing to note that the book does not bog down in trivial detail, but keeps moving right along taking the reader from one account to the next.
Upon finishing I would recommend getting a copy of "A Fellowship of Valor" on VHS tape, to accompany the book. Both are extremely well done and give you the very essence of the USMC.
This one book says it all when it comes the United States Marine Corps!
Excellent book on Marine Corps Combat History.......2000-02-11
This book is great. It doesn't have much technical info, but it more than makes up for that in the depth of the combat history of the Corps. Notice this book describes combat history, so you won't find a description of recruit training or anything, but you will find information on every Marine Corps combat action from when the first Marines fought(unnoticed by most)in the Revolutionary War to the Gulf War and beyond. Don't think this is just a general history book, because there are plenty of specific battles and actions described in good detail in this book. World War II is described more than any other conflicts, but otherwise all conflicts are described relatively equally.

This book is just great, it tells you everything you would ever want to know about the USMC, in just 1 book. This book tells you how the Marines fought, why they fought, how the fought, and where they fought. Its just a great book period.
