An amazing book. Yust's oversized "photographic elevations" show the Paris Metro subway stations in full-length scale in a way that is impossible to see when actually inside them. This is the first time these stations have been documented as the architectural landmarks that they are. Beautiful color and lighting.

Interesting look at an extraordinary man.......2003-04-24

This biography of World War II's most famous American war correspondant is drawn primarily from letters written to and from Pyle's wife and close friends. Miller quotes these letters throughout the book, and this brings a sense of authenticity to what the author tries to present. The fact that Miller was Pyle's boss and close friend for most of Ernie's adult life also creates a sense of having the inside story to Ernie's life.

Of course as a personal friend Miller somewhat glosses over a few of Ernie's shortcomings, notably his ability to repeatedly leave his tortured wife alone for long stretches of time. But the book is a good introduction to Ernie Pyle and what he meant to the war effort. I read this book prior to reading any of the compilation books of his daily columns, and I'm glad I did because I had some insight into Pyle's perspective on the war and the people who fought in it. This for me made reading his columns even more emotionally moving.

Great First Hand Account of the African Campaign.......2005-06-04

This book is an edited compilation of Ernie Pyles' dispatches during the North African Campaign of World War Two (each chapter was originally two or three columns and were woven together to make the story flow better). It describes the sea voyage from England, the landing in Algiers, and the drive across North Africa, ending with the German retreat and surrender.

Pyle gives a great accounting of all of the different types of people that compile a war effort - the nurses, cooks, mechanics, pilots, and of course the infantry. He tends to stay away from the brass and talk with the soldiers. The style of writing is very quaint - when ever a soldier is introduced in a story, Pyle gives his/her hometowm and often his/her address as well. The writing flows surprisingly well - and I say surprisingly because if one just looks at the text, consisting of short sentences and paragraphs, it would give the illusion of being choppy. It is infact beautifully written from a humanistic stand point.

Pyle doesn't gloss over the horrors of war, his own fear, the hardships or the set backs. He talks about the mistakes we made in the administration of captured Algiers, and how we were defeated in the initial combat against the Germans.

The reason why Pyle was/is so famous is he brings to life all of the warm anectodes that make life in a combat zone bearable - the unselfish acts of courage and kindness - as well as the sense of loss when a friend will no longer be with us. That was the true beauty of Pyle's work.

Again, this is a fantastic book for anyone seeking to learn who were the men and women that fought WWII and what life was like for them.

Great for active boys!.......2002-11-21

My 11 year old active, sports-oriented boy LOVES this book. Has read it four times and I have found it with a flashlight near his bed. He tells me he likes it for the fighting, and (more importantly for my point of view) because the good guys always win. It is violence but with a purpose and it reinforces values I appreciate. It teaches him about honor and I'm looking for more to do the same.

Long live the Great Pumpkin and the Sumerian god of the underword, ZAX, the entity behind the image of the skeleton's face lit by fire and displayed on dark Autumn nights! Hooray for Zax ( or in more modern terms, Jack...Jack, the giant killer; Jack be nibble/Jack be quick; Bone Man Jack the king of the pumpkin patch; Skeleton Jack ) And a BIG HOORAY for the venerable Jack O'Lantern, which welcomes the Dark Lord and all of his demonic hoards of things that go 'bump' in the long, cool, dark nights when the frost forms and the leaves fall!

Of course, the person who is responsible for this book has no idea of what he's writing about, but hey, who cares! The Christians to the lions, right?! Let'em dive under their beds faster than frightened cats over modern society's only celebration of the dark side of creation. They enjoy the paranoia! Just look at how some of them who have written reviews here rant over this nonsensical perspective on such a wonderful and happy time of year. Oh well, when it comes to the Bible Thumpers, pathos is pathos is pathos.

Absolutely unbelievable that this was published..........2005-03-18

I have nothing against Christianity, except when something like this makes us look bad for the sake of a few bucks. It's sad that they did no actual research whatsoever. It appears that "witchcraft" young adult horror fiction was used as fact (I recognize at least one section as coming pretty much verbatim from a kids' horror book I read a long time ago). Paganism was around long before the creation of "Satan". Paganism and Satanism could not possibly be more different. You have to be desperate for answers, slightly unhinged or both to take this book as "gospel".

Poorly researched, badly organized and written, illustrated with movie stills and lifted illustrations, there isn't a single page in this absurdity that's not full of factual errors. At least it's good for laughs. And check out the back cover author photos - are you trying to tell me those are two different people?

Sorry guys, I'm still not convinced that Satanism and paganism are in any way related, seeing as how paganism and the traditional (I emphasize the word "traditional") celebrations of this holiday were around long before the advent of Satan. I don't have anything against Christians - I do, how ever, have an opposition to bias, poorly researched, dare I say "fabricated" lies and nonsense, no matter who peddles them to the masses...

Author Dorrian tells the story of the raid to destroy the docks at St. Nazaire so as to deny a berth to the German battleship TIRPITZ. He describes the strategic situation, outlines the plan, and gives some background on the primary individuals involved before getting into a highly-detailed account of the raid itself. He gives full credit to the crews of the British motor torpedo boats who found themselves in a harrowing situation without having volunteered for it, unlike the commandoes they were supporting. Dorrian does not hesitate to criticize the lack of support given to the raiding force by the Admiralty and the RAF. He also shows how the local French suffered as a result of the German response to the raid, side effects that are often overlooked in glowing accounts of World War Two special operations. Ultimately, the book shows how a well-trained, highly-motivated military unit can achieve remarkable success despite great difficulties. Highly recommended to anyone interested in special operations or coastal defense.

Detailed and gripping........1998-08-24

A well-researched and -written book on the British commando attack on the docks in St. Nazaire, France, in March of 1942. Dorrian points out the risky nature of the raid, the limited support given to the raiding force by the Admiralty and the Royal Air Force, and the incredible courage and persistance of the commandos and sailors assigned to the mission. Dorrian also brings the French residents into the story, and shows how the German occupiers took out their revenge on them. Unlike many current military history titles, the maps are useful! The two biggest drawbacks : as this title was originally published in Great Britain, the author does not explain his use of certain British military terms (e.g. "O group", "pongo") and practically no research was done from the German side. Nonetheless, highly recommended to those interested in the Second World War, special operations, or naval history.

Good intro to this campaign.......2007-09-03

This book, like most in the Osprey series, provides a good introduction to this particular battle in only 96 pages. If you are looking to get an introduction in an hour or hour and a half of reading this is the book for you. It provides a brief (with emphasis on brief) to the motivation behind, personalities involved and actual military operation.

Swiftly they struck!.......2007-08-06

Osprey's book St. Nazaire 1942: The Great Command Raid describes the great commando raid on the Normandie Dock in St. Nazaire. Focus for the raid was to eliminate the dry docks there to prevent the Tirpitz from sortieing as the Bismarck had. The layout follows Osprey's usual formula (background, the forces, getting ready, the story, and the aftermath). However, unlike most of the campaign books, this one covers the subject in good detail (while I love Osprey's work, most of their campaign series gives you just enough to wet the appetite, not enough to satisfy). The general battle is discussed along with what happens to each of the MTB's (Motor Torpedo Boats) carrying the commandoes. This is then followed up with the actions of the different commando teams on the ground. The text is a little brief and abrupt, this is due to the limited space in Osprey's books. The additional material; the photos (a few I hadn't seen in other books on the battle), the artwork (very nicely done and fitting to the battle), and the maps are great! Also, the bibliography is a good (I'll recommend St. Nazaire Commando as an excellent follow up on the land portion of the battle). I'll need to follow up on a couple of them later on.

Rating wise for an Osprey book this is a five star book and by far the best I've read in the campaign series! While it doesn't have the details that the references have, it does a great job describing the Raid on St. Nazaire. Because of this, for me it's a solid four star book!

Good Narrative but no Analysis.......2001-12-01

St Nazaire 1942 is an excellent narrative summary of the famous British commando raid in March 1942. While this raid has been covered in detail in a variety of other books, this latest edition of the Osprey Campaign series adds detailed maps and diagrams that help to make sense of a very confusing night action. However, the author Ken Ford has not followed the standard Osprey Campaign format very closely, which will upset some readers.

Instead of the standard sections on opposing leaders, plans and forces, the author begins with sections that outline the reasons for the raid, the planning phase, training the raiding force, the Royal Naval forces involved, and the enemy. While many details about leaders, tactics and equipment are included in these sections, the information is not as well packaged as usual. Furthermore, the author provides little information on the German perspective; only one leader is detailed and there is little information on Luftwaffe/Kriegsmarine patrols around St Nazaire. German anti-invasion plans and mine defenses are not discussed. Intelligence collection about the target is only mentioned in terms of aerial reconnaissance, with no mention of either Enigma or the French resistance. No formal order of battle information is provided for either side, although much of the data is embedded in the text.

The raid itself is covered in excellent detail, with three sections covering the sea approach, the run up the Loire River and the actual assault. There are three 3-D "Bird's Eye View" maps: the raid at H+10 minutes, the commando attacks in the dockyard and attacks in the Old Town. There are four 2-D maps: the port itself, the route to St Nazaire, the path up the Loire River, and the dockyard targets. In addition, there are three battle scenes depicting HMS Campbeltown charging toward the dock, the demolition of the Pump House and the final breakout attempt. Numerous excellent photographs also complement the text.

The greatest flaw in this volume is the total lack of analysis. While the raid was a brilliant success in terms of the objectives achieved, the virtual destruction of the raiding force needs closer examination. Based more on brawn than brains, the British plan relied primarily on raw courage and luck to gloss over major flaws in the plan. The British raiders were incredibly lucky in passing undetected within 750 meters of German coast defenses around St Nazaire and by the time they were spotted, the Germans could not stop HMS Campbeltown from ramming the dock. However, the British did little to interfere with German coastal defenses other than an ineffectual air raid and crude deception efforts; had the Germans spotted the British ten minutes earlier the raid would probably have ended as an utter failure. Furthermore, the lack of a viable evacuation plan - other than cruising past fully-alerted German defenses in slow, unarmored launches - was a major flaw in the plan. The British were writing the book of how to conduct raids at St Nazaire and they made serious mistakes, fortunately which they learned from.

Another huge mistake, which was one of the great lessons learned from the raid, was that transporting troops into combat in thin-skinned vehicles is a bad idea. Of the 12 motor launches in the raid, 7 were sunk and 3 badly damaged; only 38 of 164 commandos on these launches were landed. British losses in these exposed, unarmored launches were horrific, and remind the modern reader of the similar American mistake in sending troops in thin-skinned vehicles into combat in Mogadishu in 1993 (and with the same result). There is not much discussion of alternatives to this type of raid and no discussion about lessons learned for future raids. Nor is the effect of the raid on the French population of St Nazaire discussed. Overall, this book is an excellent summary of the raid but the lack of analysis somewhat reduces its value as history.

This is the first full-scale study in English of the reign of Frederick William IV, King of Prussia from 1840 to 1861, and arguably the most important German monarch in the century between the death of Frederick the Great and the accession of William II. Although Frederick William has long been criticized as a Romantic reactionary who was utterly out of touch with his times, this study reaches different conclusions, arguing that he was in fact a modern and in many ways, 'successful' monarch. The book is not a biography in the traditional sense. Rather, it focuses on the structures, institutions and transformations of the monarchial system in Prussia during a time of revolutionary change. It thus represents a contribution to our understanding of the structures of the nineteenth-century European state, and the strategies by which conservative elites were able to adjust themselves to new circumstances.
