The Museum of Modern Art is now in the midst of the largest building project in its history. Designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, the new Museum will reopen in midtown Manhattan in winter 2004-05 to coincide with its 75th anniversary. The 630,000-square-foot Museum will be nearly twice the size of the former facility, offering dramatically expanded and redesigned spaces for exhibitions, public programming, educational outreach, and scholarly research. But The Museum of Modern Art is not Taniguchi's first museum, though it is his first museum in the United States. The architect has been designing museums in his native Japan since 1978. In celebration of the opening of the new MoMA building, the Museum is publishing this book about Taniguchi's museums--nine in all. They include the Tokyo National Museum, Marugami Museum of Contemporary Art, Nagano Art Museum, Ken Domon Museum of Photography, and Shiseido Art Museum. For the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery in Nagano, Taniguchi situated a display space for the works of painter Kaii Higashiyama next to a reflecting pool and garden. In the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, built on the old castle site of Komoro City, Taniguchi expressed the history and distinct nature of the place by affording views to both the new city and the historic area. Finally, the Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, situated across from the city's railway station, was designed to include a plaza that connects the museum with the station. Taniguchi: Nine Museums will discuss the plans of each of these museums with an emphasis on The Museum of Modern Art's new building.

Art in water garden........2006-12-04
If one is trying to understand contemporary Japanese architectural trends,
or the heavy theoretical background of Taniguchi's
architecture, then this might not be the best book. Yet, if one is
seeking an architectural book that speaks of architecture as a spatial
art and a coercive modulator with water
garden, then here is a book that provides great pleasure.
This book communicates more with drawings and supplementary images than
words. When I first saw this book at the bookstore, I was a bit hesitant
to buy it. The price and the text in the book simply did not match.
Expository writing for each project is extremely short. Yet they are
condensed enough to deliver quintessential themes of the project.
The common denominator, besides being museums, which binds the
projects, is water body (garden). His museums have one leg in the water
and the other leg on the earth. His water bodies (typically, artificial)
have different faces; sometimes, static, promoting Ryoanji-like
meditation; othertimes, dynamic, promoting Katsura-like shakkei (editing
middle ground to borrow background landscape).
His museums weave in and out of the water to illuminate and intensify
the experience. The strokes of water garden in his museums, without
doubt, will wet the dry museum fatigue. In addition, because Taniguchi
reveals sometimes part and sometimes all of a water body, his spaces
breathe.
One criticism I have is that the fourth project, Marugame
Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art, somehow does not belong
with other projects. It's a fine piece of building, but unlike
other museums, it's very self-contained. The other eight museums actively
engage with the exterior water body. Only the fourth museum defeats the
purpose of inter-penetration of Taniguchi's architecture; that is,
inter-penetration of Japanese garden and modernist's space.

Poetry that reads like prose.......2005-07-24
I had to read this book for a seminar I was going to attend. Not being a great poetry reader I did not expect to enjoy it. I read the book in one session, and after the first few pages did not remember that I was reading poetry. It flows really easily, the language making it very easy to dive into the strange world of the author's Roman London. The modern slang and approach make the setting familiar in some ways, and then the very different customs of the period bring the reader up short. The scene set at the local "games" needs a strong stomach to read. Highly recommended.
and now for something completely different.......2003-01-15
I bought this book with low expectation for both the poetry and the story. I'm happy to say that I was wrong. Emperor's Babe is sexy, stylish and just the most original book I've read in ages. The heroine is a tough little customer, a hip Afro Roman living in Londinium who meets the man of her dreams and loses everything else. By the time you come to last page I promise that you will be moved by her story.
Astonishing lyrical prose -- and funny!!.......2002-04-29
It's been a while since I've been knocked off my feet by a book in way The Emperor's Babe did. Maybe not since I read Rimbaud at highschool... Proverbs keep flying through my head when I want to describe the book: funny, intelligent, sophisticated, heart-warming, etc. etc. What struck me first (of course) was the verse. Steady two line most of the time, but changing pace in more intimate sections and by that changing atmosphere at once. The book is somewhat of a classic lyrical epic and bc of that rhythm it grips you from the first pair of lines, and (I have to say this) it swings!!
Second: the main character, Zuleika, is a welcome apparition in present-day literature. Zuleika is tough, smart and gets what she wants. No whining like Bridget J. or all the other 30-ish single women-books and definitely nothing of the "I've lived through it all" Oprah-books. Zuleika's got a certain sense of girl-power (sorry for that word) and that makes you love her from the start.
And then the story: London 211. It's dirty, rotten and sexy. But that's all I say, just go and read. And after that go and look for her first book "Lara". You won't be sorry...

These studies adopt a variety of disciplinary, thematic and country-based approaches to the complex and contested issues around the character of the nation-state in Latin America from the early nineteenth century. In recent years there has been a great deal of scholarly interest in this topic from the viewpoint of cultural and literary studies, but Latin America remains under-represented in general historical and sociological theories of nationhood, and there has been a paucity of serious comparative work on the state.
The essays in the present collection do not pretend to elaborate an all-encompassing theory or model for the region. Derived from a range of analytical and stylistic approaches, they seek to develop debate and research on the topic through case-studies (including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Spain), historiographical review, and themes such as the role of violence, military conscription and pensions, money and the role of finance, early notions of development, the ambiguous role of liberalism, and how to evaluate the reach and qualities of the nation-state.

Douglass Sullivan-Gonzalez's Piety, Power, and Politics gives an evenhanded and insightful look into this interesting time in Central American history. His treatment of Rafael Carrera and the leader's tumultous relationship with the Catholic Church obviously represents countless hours of primary source scholarship (as his bibliography attests). All in all the book is engaging and informative, not a bad combination at all in a work of such scholarship.

"Fireforce" is the compelling, brutal, but true account of Chris Cocks' service in 3 Commando, The Rhodesian Light Infantry, during the bush war. Serving in 3 Commando's elite ranks, other than born Rhodesians, were Englishmen, Irishmen, Scots, Welshmen, Americans, Norwegians, South Africans, Portuguese, Brazilians, Australians, New Zealanders, West Germans, and Canadians, plus a host of other nationalities. It was the closest parallel to the French Foreign Legion in recent times.
Chris Cocks joined the RLI as a National Servicemen in 1976 for 12 months at the age of 18, then signed on as a regular for three years. He soon became a stick leader and at times, after promotion to lance corporal, acted as Troop Commander. His upbringing had been a sheltered one and he knew little of life...but he was due for a radical change.
Fireforce, a method of combat developed by the Rhodesians and perfected by the RLI, involved troops being helicoptered or parachuted into an area immediately after a guerrilla presence had been reported or a sighting made.
The combat strain on a fighting solier was almost unbelievable, for the Rhodesians, who were always desperately short of ground troops to deal with guerrilla incursions, sometimes parachuted the same men into as many as three contacts a day.
While estimates of enemy casualties vary, there seems little doubt that the RLI successfully accounted for at least 12,000 ZANLA and ZIPRA Communist-trained and equipped guerrillas during the long years of war. "Fireforce" is not for the squeamish. Although it has been written with unforgettable pathos and humor; it also tells of face-to-face combat in the bush and death at point-blank range. It is a book which does nothing to glamorize or glorify the war. For as Chris Cocks found at such a young age, war is merely a catalogue of suffering, destruction and death.
"Fireforce" has been described by critics as being to the Rhodesian War what "All Quiet on the Western Front" was to World War I. Read it...it will be an experience you will never forget.

awesome 1st hand account.......2005-05-25
I throughly enjoyed the book. It is what the author has stated it is a 1st hand account of a trooper in the RLI. It sheds alot of light on a what I consider is a forgotten war. My opinion that many of us within the military community (I am in afghanistan right now with an airborne infantry unit) sould read and learn from the tactics and TTP s set forth. It makes a great addition to any military library.

The finest war book available.......2002-12-17
Wow! That is all you can say after reading Fireforce. C.J. Cocks has written one of the finest accounts of war ever put on paper. Fireforce tells everything the hours of boredom waiting for a call out, the adrenaline rush when the call out comes, and the horrors of combat. Even if you have no interest in the Rhodesian scene this is a must read. Cocks captures the terrible strain that combat causes on young men making them age way past their years. The pictures in the book show the evidence as the men show signs of combat fatigue and Cocks himself looks as he has aged 10 years in the four years covered by this book. The firefights are very descriptive and at times the reader feels the AK rounds whizzing by their ears. This is not just a story of combat but also a story of young men fighting for a country's independence that no one gave a damn for. Cocks describes the final years of Rhodesia's struggle for independence in one of the countries elite units. This is the modern version of All Quiet on the Western Front. I recommend this book to anyone interested in what war is really all about.

Great book! Chris Cocks really brings into clear focus the horror of war. This book is not about the "big picture." If you want an overall history of the Rhodesian war or the politics involved etc look elsewhere. If you want an excellent read based on one man's experiences then this is it. I particulary found his description of the kit used by the soldiers interesting, who carried what, why, what worked, what didn't. As a bonus the photos are superb! Very clear, crisp and many in color. Strongly recommend this book!
The Best Book on The Rhodesian War........1999-12-03
You cant put down this book once you start reading it. I cant wait to read his follow up book "Survival Course".
