Book Description
In 'Albemarle,' photographer Robert Llewellyn and writer Avery Chenoweth explore how the landscape of Albemarle County, where the Virginia piedmont meets the Blue Ridge Mountains, and its people have helped create an American sense of identity.
Complemented by Llewellyn's luxurious color photography, the narrative rolls back 15,000 years to the first signs of human habitation, continues through the Colonial period, and arrives in the modern era. The story traces the evolving culture of landscape as it has been played out in the lives of historic figures, from the Monacans to the Moderns, Thomas Jefferson to Lady Bird Johnson, Edgar Allan Poe to Teddy Roosevelt. With a sweeping view of aesthetics, spirituality, religion, and history, the book itself is a work of art, essential reading, and viewing, for anyone who has lived in, or been inspired by, the landscape of Albemarle County.

Book Production Flawed.......2006-11-06
Nothing wrong with the content of the book but for a coffee table book, this one from Amazon had several flaws. Yes the cost was less than buying at the bookstore but the bookstore copy probably wouldn't have wrinkled pages and pages still stuck together with the edges uncut. Really shoddy quality.
Better than the Real Thing.......2004-08-24
As a teenager, I spent years wandering around the Albemarle County countryside. Not literally wandering for the whole year, but a still lot of time in all seasons. More than 10 years later I've still yet to see everything, as Albemarle is rather like a small European country. Small but remarkably varied with pockets of unique 'kingdoms' hidden all around.
Anyway, in all those days of wandering through fields of llamas, being chased by farmed buffalo and generally getting lost in the woods at all hours, Albemarle County never looked this good. It is remarkable how truly picturesque this place becomes through the lens and pen of the photographer and the author. Much better than the real thing.
If you are interested in Albemarle, you don't need to come here and see it yourself. Stay at home and read this book instead.
Kudos from a former resident of Charlottesville.......2004-05-26
Don't be deceived by the physical dimensions of Albemarle and beautiful photos it contains. This is more than just a coffee table book, thanks to Wingtips author Avery Chenoweth's elevating prose. The book will manage to trigger the sensory memories of anyone who has ever spent any time Charlottesville.
Excellent!.......2003-12-04
This is a fabulous book for anyone who lives in, has ever visited, or has ever even thought of visiting Albemarle County, V.A. The history is extremely well written, and the photographs are out-of-this-world beautiful! I highly recommend it!

Book Description
Greek vases are one of the world's finest ceramic traditions. Even before a vase became a painted masterpiece, its graceful lines and elegant proportions made it a masterpiece of form.
Athenian Vase Construction details in a comprehensive, step-by-step fashion the manner in which the major Athenian vases were made. Photographs of pottery from the Getty Museum and other collections provide ancient evidence--from the interiors and exteriors of the pots themselves--as to how they
were formed and constructed, while line drawings illustrate how the potter worked.

greek vase construction details & shapes.......2002-11-24
excelent book! great comprehensive collection of the vase shapes, styles, and discussions on the most likely ways they made them and why.
right to the point when you want it, and a historical discussion as well with clay & glaze chemistry details. the summary of shapes all on one page (well, 8 pages!) is inspirational for me. i never saw them presented this way.
step by step photos of constructions.
i can see collectors using this book to understand how the pots were made and used. and i CERTAINLY can use this book to try making vases myself in the "old" style.
find the paperback version to save some $$$
see ya

With photographs of potter from the Getty museum.......2001-04-29
Athenian Vase Construction: A Potter's Analysis details in a comprehensive, step-by-step fashion the manner in which the major Athenian vases (one of the world's finest ceramic traditions) were made. Photographs of potter from the Getty museum and other collections provide evidential documentation (from the interiors and exteriors of the pots themselves) as to how they were formed and constructed, while line drawings illustrate how the potter worked. Highly recommended for personal, professional, and academic reference collections, Athenian Vase Construction showcases them as painted masterpieces, from their graceful lines and elegant proportions forming an enduring aesthetic of form and beauty that has never been surpassed and rarely equaled in the more than two thousand years since their original creation.

Great book with great advice.......2005-01-10
Before I listed my house for sale I bought this book to learn what price to tell the realtors I would accept. A few years ago I was going to sell my house and the brokers that came by wanted to list my house for a lower price than my neighbor's house sold for a month earlier. I decided not to sell back then. Now I put my home on the market again and this time I learned why my asking price was correct based upon what I learned in this book. When the brokers came by I made sure they realized that I had good reasons to justify the sales price I wanted to get. That alone earned me a lot of money in the final selling price.
I'm not an appraiser but by getting the concepts that they use from this book I was able to know enough about it to help sell my house. It was great advice and the book is great and enjoyable to read since it's not boring! Get this if you buy or sell real estate since you will learn a lot.
Excellent book to learn from a pro and price your house........2004-07-10
This is a fantastic book to learn how to decide what the price and market value is for you house or condominium or rental property. There was a ton of great and helpful advice that was excellent and easy to read and learn from. Many appraiser books are too technical and written only for professional appraisers but this book is written in a way that anyone can benefit from. When I wanted to sell my house I knew that I should not rely on what a real estate broker tells me since they just want to earn a commission. So I decided to read up on how to decide what price to sell my house and was able to do that properly with what I learned in this book. Great book for anyone interested in real estate. Highly recommended if you want to maximize your real estate profits and have a top appraiser walk you through the process every step of the way.
I liked this book a lot. Very informative with good guidance.......2004-05-14
This was my choice for the book to teach me about real estate appraisals. Before my husband and I did a very expensive renovation and remodeling of our home, we wanted to find out what the sales price of the house could be if the work was done. Since we are not appraisers we wanted to learn what a real estate appraiser does and looks for to decide on what a house is worth in the market. This book told us everything that we wanted to know and a lot more. You do not have to be someone with years of experience to be able to understand how to appraise real estate with this book. We learned so much helpful advice and techniques that my husband and I realized the home remodeling and improvements we were planning to spend a fortune for, would have not been a good investment. This book showed us how to determine the value using a what-if scenario that professional appraisers use. We learned that only 70% of the money we were planning to spend would have been a good investment to increase the sales price of our home. The extra 30% would have been an over-improvement in the appraisal lingo which means that we would have been over-spending on the remodeling without getting the increased value and sales price for our home. When you are talking about a $115,000.00 remodeling and improvement job, then that 30% this book saved us is certainly something that my husband and I are very happy to have learned. This book was a great investment for us and has given us a phenomenal return on the purchase price in savings.
a good place to start.......2004-05-12
If getting to know your home is important to you, then REAL ESTATE APPRAISING FROM A TO Z is a good place to start. It addresses safety concerns; inspections of the Operating Systems, the Lower Level, the Interior & Exterior, Direct Sales, Sample Appraisal Reports, Cost,Income & more.
Rebeccasreads recommends REAL ESTATE APPRAISING FROM A TO Z for those who want to learn everything their Realtor doesn't want them to know, without the sugar coat. You'll learn how to catch the problem conditions in any house, how to close the deal & a new career in one of the hottest markets.
Customer Reviews:
Simple to follow dream therapy techniques.......2000-06-19
This book focuses on the techniques used by the Senoi Indians to develop full human potential through dream therapy and meditation techniques. As the preface promises, this tiny book provides the simple but powerful "core of a curriculum to develop affective, intuitive, and creative processes in students."
Educational research has proven that human beings learn only what they can connect with an emotional state, that is, with a memory.
Unless we are able to "peg" a new idea on something familiar, it does not make sense to us, and will, even if memorized, pass out of our short-term memory into immediate oblivion.
Children learn best and fastest. Why? I have been told all my life that it is because the human brain develops faster before the age of two than at any other age. Human potential speaker Brian Tracy talks about the fact that all the necessary "don'ts" that parents must say to their children ultimately curb not only their unhealthy curiosity but unfortunately much of their healthy curiosity--and their concurrent free association method of learning.
I definitely think the fact that children use a multisensory approach to learning is the reason that they learn so well.
They sing, dance, draw, and act out every new concept until they understand it relative to their own world--unless told "don't" by a concerned or busy parent.
Often if a child does not have enough information to develop an idea to their satisfaction, they will initiate a persistent "why" campaign in an effort to get any available "big" person to give them the information they need to understand what eludes them.
Until another new idea distracts them, that is. However, sometimes the interruption provides just the right idea that helps the searched for concept to click at last. Creativity is, after all, defined as the juxtaposition of two unlike things in a new way that reveals a previously unseen aspect of one or both of the two unlike things.
What if we taught children how to learn rather than teaching them what we want them to know? Children are inherently curious and voracious learners unless stunted by external circumstances.
This book gives specific exercises for developing skills that help children approach their lives with the perspective of an active learner.
If I had known what a jewel this book is when I first bought it at a book clearing house, I would have--
1. Bought more than one copy of it.
2. Recommended it to others while it was still possibly in print.
If you teach or work with people, this is a great book to find and read. If you are interested in dream therapy, this is a great start. Instead of translating specific images, it teaches the reader to continue, lead, use, and interact successfully with their dreams. To the authors: please reprint this book!

Book Description
As a strategically located seat of European power, Paris was a prized target for foreign invaders. Consequently, it became one of the most heavily fortified cities in Europe and the world. Though many of the fortifications have been destroyed, demolished, or hidden behind civil and religious architecture, they have left their imprint on the city, both physically (with an outline still visible in the city's thoroughfares) and historically. To understand the history of Parisand indeed, of France as a wholeone must understand the history of the fortifications.
This heavily illustrated history begins with the period from 300 BC to 987 AD, ranging from the Gallic period through that of the Carpetians. Part 2 looks at the Medieval era (987-1512), a growth period for the city marked by the enceinte of Philippe Auguste, the reign of Louis VIII and Louis IX, the establishment of the Louvre and the Bastille, the Hundred Years' War, and the development of gunpowder and artillery. Bastioned fortifications (1512-1874) are the focus of part 3. It was in this era that Paris modernized its defenses, Louis XIV and Louis XV reigned, the city was transformed by Baron Georges Hausmann and Napoleon III, and the Franco-Prussian War was fought. Modern fortifications (1874-1944) are detailed in part 4, ranging from the building of the second Parisian ring of polygonal forts to the end of World War II.
Customer Reviews:
Paris Fortified.......2006-02-11
This book will not overwhelm the reader with excessive details on fortifications. It is a good history describing how Paris was fortified over the last 2000 years that includes easy to understand descriptions of the fortifications and the changing technology putting everything into the proper perspective. There are no photos, but many drawings covering from the Gallic Era through World War II. The price is a bit high since this publisher caters to libraries and educational institutions.

Book Description
The completion of Dr Knighton's edition of the first chapter minute book of Westminster Abbey records in detail Elizabeth I's refoundation of the collegiate church, including regulatio for preaching, the school and the library; the chapter's own housing is a continuing issue. Predominantly, however, the acts document the chapter's estate management: lease particulars shed light on the population of early modern Westminster and London. Favours sought by queen and courtiers are recorded, the exercise of the dean and chapter's ecclesiastical patronage is registered. At the end of the period the abbey was home to some of the most eminent churchmen and scholars of the day, Andrewes, Bancroft, Camden and Hakluyt among them. Reforms and improvements attempted and achieved in the early years of James I's reign conclude the volume. Index to both vols.CHARLES KNIGHTON gained his Ph.D. from Magdalene College, Cambridge.
Book Description
Identifying hawks in flight is a tricky business. Across North America, tens of thousands of people gather every spring and fall at more than one thousand known hawk migration sites--from New Jersey's Cape May to California's Golden Gate. Yet, as many discover, a standard field guide, with its emphasis on plumage, is often of little help in identifying those raptors soaring, gliding, or flapping far, far away.
Hawks from Every Angle takes hawk identification to new heights. It offers a fresh approach that literally looks at the birds from every angle, compares and contrasts deceptively similar species, and provides the pictures (and words) needed for identification in the field. Jerry Liguori pinpoints innovative, field-tested identification traits for each species from the various angles that they are seen.
Featuring 339 striking color photos on 68 color plates and 32 black & white photos, Hawks from Every Angle is unique in presenting a host of meticulously crafted pictures for each of the 19 species it covers in detail--the species most common to migration sites throughout the United States and Canada. All aspects of raptor identification are discussed, including plumage, shape, and flight style traits.
For all birders who follow hawk migration and have found themselves wondering if the raptor in the sky matches the one in the guide, Hawks from Every Angle--distilling an expert's years of experience for the first time into a comprehensive array of truly useful photos and other pointers for each species--is quite simply a must.
Key Features:
- The essential new approach to identifying hawks in flight
- Innovative, accurate, and field-tested identification traits for each species
- 339 color photos on 68 color plates, 32 black & white photos
- Compares and contrasts species easily confused with one another, and provides the pictures (and words) needed for identification in the field
- Covers in detail 19 species common to migration sites throughout the North America
- Discusses light conditions, how molt can alter the shape of a bird, aberrant plumages, and migration seasons and sites
- User-friendly format

Hawks.......2007-03-14
The illustations make it much easier to identify hawks in the sky and on the ground. It will be a valuable companion on my bird walks in the Audubon and to ID the hawks soaring overhead and through the woods by my home.
Libbie
Extremely informative, with excellent photography.......2006-10-03
I though this was an excellent resource for identifying hawks in flight. The photos are very informative, and attractive as well. The guide is, in my opinion, very comprehensive and extremely well written.
Hawks from Every Angle.......2006-04-18
A super-useful reference guide that goes well with HAWKS IN FLIGHT -- and actually I would probably look at this one first. Photographs and text both contain a lot of helpful information to assist in raptor identification -- though the "pitfalls" shots make it clear that not every bird will be identifiable.
Mileage obviously varies, but as a Californian I don't feel shortchanged by this book and have used it particularly for Sharpie/Cooper's differentiation.
another mistitled hawk book.......2006-01-13
If you're looking for a book that covers all the raptors that regularly occur in North America, forget it. A more honest title would've been 'Raptors of Northeastern Hawkwatch Sites.' Even then, northeastern hawkwatchers won't find Harris' Hawk in the book. The raptors Liguori does cover are done well, by and large, and I was particularly impressed with the treatments of both Harlan's Hawk and the Northern Harrier. But if you live in the West, as I do, you'll find the book less useful than the title suggests. Get yourself a Clark and Wheeler--it'll serve you much better. I'm looking forward to that frabjous day when hawkwatchers will escape their eastern bias, and discover that we have hawks in the West too.
A useful guide........2005-12-26
Having read other books on the same subject, I hastily read through this book. Had I not read other books on this subject the text might have been more useful that it was. I did enjoy reading another author's ideas on hawk watching. This text references other books that I have read that are also very informative about hawk watching.
